2004 Jeep cherokee has a problem with corrosion of the rim. The consumer stated on October 11, 2009 while driving, the left front tire blew out forcing him and his wife off the highway. When the consumer went to have the tire replaced, he learned that the wheel rim itself was corroded so badly that the tire establishment refused to put the rim back on the vehicle, citing the fact that mounting surface and spokes of the wheel were badly corroded. The consumer was further informed that all of the rims were similarly corroded and were in need of replacement, and if such condition were not addressed soon it could and ultimately would likely cause the lugs to snap and the wheels to fall off. The consumer also had problems with the brakes which according to the service manager was caused by a piece of the wheel chrome cover which had become delaminated from the left front wheel and was rubbing on tie rod which caused the brakes to malfunction. Updated 03/04/10.

I had a slow leak in my rear tires , so I went to get them plugged. I was told that the rims had rusted through the back tires and punctured the tires. I could not get into a Jeep dealership for two weeks so my mechanic ordered a new rim (Jeep part) and two new tires so that I could drive safely. Jeep refuses to accept responsibility based on the fact that I had my own mechanic replace the tires. I was told that I should have waited two weeks. However, I was not going to risk driving on a faulty rim and tires. I still have the rusted out rims and punctured tires that Jeep refuses to acknowledge.

Contact took vehicle to a dealership to have yearly maintenance done. The dealership told him the tires were dry rotted. Also, the chrome rims were corroded. The plating inside the rims was corroded. He contacted the dealership, they told him they would replace two of the wheels, but he would have to replace the other two at his expense. Updated 12/27/05.
The chrome rims that were an option on the vehicle, on the inside metal corroded and peeled off. Already talked to the dealer, and the manufacturer noticed this . Just this week. The tires are goodyear, wranglers. The tires now are michelin tires which were changed at 50,000 miles. The wheel or rim hubs had to be broken off because they were rusted out due to corrosion.
The car is only three years old with factory installed alloy wheel and after two years I noticed the chrome starting to chip off on all four rims. I recently replaced all four tires and was told that the rims were in even worse shape than I had expected. For the length of time that this occured and the extra money paid for the option, I just don't feel that this is right. I am over on my warranty miles and feel as if there is no recourse.
The consumer stated that the rims corroded in such a way that they failed to maintain proper air pressure. The consumer contacted the dealer and manufacturer and was told that there was nothing they could do about it.
Two of the wheels on the consumer's 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee leaked air due to rust. The consumer was told the inside of the rim was rusting.
Factory 17" rouge chrome plated wheels have hairline cracks in the chrome between the spokes. Do not know if safe to drive because this cracking of the chrome may be stress cracks in the aluminum wheel. The car a 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee only has 9,000 miles on it. Jeep dealer says the cracking chrome/wheel is not under warranty but stops short of telling me why it happened and if it is a safety problem.
Right front aluminum wheel rims gets too hot to touch. Rims seem to get hot according to temperature outside. Dealer can't duplicate problem. The right front caliper would not totally release heating the rotor and causing vibration, the caliper and rotor were replaced which remedied the problem.

Whenever pushing on abs braking system, they would fail to engage. Would be vibrating. Aluminum rims were cracked. When shifting into 4-wheel drive would smell something burning. Taking vehicle to dealership. Also, the transmission failed to shift correctly.
Chrysler is selling all Grand Cherokees with aluminum rims, which bend when driven off road, it is a 4 wheel drive vehicle. I feel that when I drive back on road, at highway speeds, the tires may come off of the bend rims. Chrysler will not replace them with steel rims, nor was even aware that hte rims sold would not work off road.
