Defective airbags on 2 Jeep Liberty vehicles. Both 2002 models. The first accident was in February of 2002. Both accidents were head on. Airbags failed to release on both occasions. Complaintant was wearing seat belt on both occasions.
I ordered my Jeep Liberty 7/01 and picked it up 9/01. The morning of 4/4/04 I was driving home and started crashing into trees. The car was spinning, back and forth across the road - hit 3 trees, mailboxes and a telephone pole (hard enough that even though it was the last thing that I hit, it moved enough that it tore the cables out of someone's house). About 50 feet before the 1st tree, was my front passenger tire and about 2 feet of the axle (or whatever holds the rim and tire on the truck). The front of the truck from the right front quarter panel to 1/3 across the front of the truck is up inside the dashboard, the back driver's tire is blown out, the spare tire on the back is smashed, the 2 passenger side doors are smashed and the entire truck is off the frame. I told the tow driver and police about the recall that I'd just gotten that stated that the "a ball joint that has separated from the knuckle could result in loss of vehicle directional control and could result in a crash. " I had an appointment to get it fixed 4/6/04. . . The accident was 4/4/04. My injuries: airbags didn't go off but I was wearing my seatbelt. I broke my arm (8 weeks in cast, 6 weeks in a brace and I'm still in physical therapy. Standard seatbelt bruise that lasted more than 3 weeks, and the associated pain. My insurance is covering my medical and the replacement of the car (with financing, it paid exactly what I owed). So, even though Jeep knew about the need for a recall in October 2003, I wasn't notified until March 2004. It was a clear dry night. I was awake and coherent, not speeding or drinking, and paying attention when I suddenly lost control. In fact, it's damn lucky that I was only going 35-40. Jeep claims they're not responsible. All I want is for them to admit that they were at fault. If they'd sent the recall notice in a timely manner, back in 10-11/03, it would have been fixed prior to another winter of snow and sleet and crap getting into that joint to corrode it!.
While driving, the vehicle suddenly accelerated. The driver was unable to maintain control of the vehicle. This caused the driver to hit another vehicle on the drivers side. None of the air bags deployed. The driver was not hurt. The driver had the vehicle towed to the dealer for analysis. The mechanic was unable to duplicate the problem.
While vehicle was parked with the engine on front air bags deployed inadvertently. The cause of deployment had not been determined.
While driving at 45 mph, the vehicle was involved in a head on collision. During the air bag deployment, the driver's shirt caught on fire. The consumer reported to be a non smoker.
While driving at 55 mph consumer was involved in a frontal collision. Upon impact, neither of the air bags deployed. Dealer and manufacturer were notified.
We were traveling at 30 mph and vehicle that hit us was going 35-40. It ran a red light and we t-boned the othe rvehicle, smashing the front of my 2002 Jeep Liberty. No airbags deployed. We were both taken to the hospital ,and suffered substantial injuries, including hairline fractures to the collarbone and rib/bone chip and hematoma to the shin/ neck and back pain/bumps and bruises. I just sent Chrysler a letter with pictures of the car and police report, asking them to compensate us for their faulty equipment.
Consumer's son was involved in a frontal collision and neither air bag deployed. Also, neither seat belt held the driver and passenger in their seats. Dealer notified.
The vehicle was involved in a collision, and the frontal air bags did not perform as designed.
Nhtsa campaign id#01v311000 id#01v373000 have not been notified by Chrysler of these. Had 2002 Jeep Liberty since Dec 2001 VIN#1j4gl58k22w216824.
Seat belt and air bag failure during head-on collision.
Failure of airbag to deploy and driver side seat belt to lock.
Upon making a slight lane correction at approx. 60 mph, my daughter's 2002 Jeep libety began swerving uncontrollably. She felt no resistance to the steering wheel as she tried to stop the swerving. At no time did she apply the brakes. Witnesses said it appeared she had a flat tire. Eventually, the vehicle entered the grass median and rolled 2. 5 or 3. 5 times coming to rest on the roof facing on-coming traffic. The complete rear end(tires and differential) separated and ended up approx. 75 feet from the vehicle. The right front axle or cv joint was broken. Neither her passenger or her air bags deployed. The driver's seat belt was broken at the end of the motion of the rolling. Both occupants were bruised and cut. We believe the axle failed and caused this potentially fatal accident. This vehicle had approx. 3000 miles on it. At 1800 miles the engine had thrown a rod and the engine was replaced completely. The Jeep Liberty is structurally unsound and of poor design particularly in the area of the rear suspension. Daimler-chysler has lowered the suspension in obvious response to roll over incidents. . .
Consumers son was involved in a collision. The collision caused the vehicle to roll over four times, coming to a rest on the vehicles top. None of the airbags deployed. After returning from the hospital where the son was being treated for contusions, the recall notice had been delivered, 01v37.
I was involved in an accident where a vehicle pulled in front of me and I t-boned them at approx. 50-55 mph. Neither the front driver or passenger air bags deployed. Said vehicle now totalled. Contacted Chrysler, filed a claim. They sent a "special investigator" that tried to tell both the body shop owner (who was on scene of accident) and my husband that the accident happened differently than it actually did. The investigators contact at Chrysler, roy porterfield, then explained to me that he thought the accident happened differently than it did. He told me that the airbags weren't supposed to go off unless it is a full frontal impact. This accident was a full frontal impact. I hit the steering wheel in said accident and after three weeks am still in pain and not fully able to return to work.
While driving at unknown speed a tractor trailer made a sudden stop and ajeep rearended the vehicle. Upon impact, neither airbag deployed, driver suffered bruised arm. Damage to vehicle unknown.
My daughter's Jeep Liberty rolled. During the roll, the drivers side seat belt released her. There was an eventual frontal impact but no air bags deployed. My daughter was thrown from the vehicle and killed. See annotations for addition follow up information. Cw.
Consumer states vehicle was involved in a frontal collision at 50 mph, however only the passgener air bag deployed. The manufacturer was contacted. There was one injury in this accident.
There were no failures. The vehicle was serviced due to recall notice.
While traveling at 35 mph, another driver traveling at the same speed came across in front of consumer's lane and struck front of consumer's vehicle head-on. Upon impact, none of airbags deployed.
Consumer received two recall notices. 1. Nhtsa recall# 01v373000 concerning air bag failure in December 2003. Consumer contacted the dealer, who informed the consumer the parts were not available. The dealer was supposed to contact the consumer when the parts became available. 2. Nhtsa recall 03v460000 subject concerning lower control arm ball joint failure on 3/2/2004. Consumer contacted the same dealer, who did not have the parts. No reason was given as to why the parts were not available.
