The contact owns a 2010 Jeep Liberty. The contact stated that the tire pressure sensor light illuminated. The contact mentioned that while unscrewing the cap for the front passenger side valve stem, the top fractured causing the tire to deflate. The contact experienced the same failure while unscrewing the cap from the rear passenger side tire. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 45,000.

I was driving 50 mph on a paved highway. The air pressure light came on. A few seconds later there was a rumble noise. I pulled over and looked at the tires. One was completely flat. I had thought I ran over something very large causing an instant flat. After removing the tire, we noted that the tire was still good. The nut holding the valve stem/pressure sensor in had broken. The valve stem/pressure sensor component was found inside the tire. The result was a very large gap where the valve stem was, allowing the tire to instantly deflate. When checking the other valve stems, one of the other nuts holding the valve stems in was also broken. The Jeep is parked until we can remove all of the valve stems and replace them. We will not drive it as it is. We will be replacing the valve stem/pressure sensor component with the old fashion style valve stems. I would not continue to drive the vehicle with the stock equipment. I would always worry about what would happen if the valve stem broke on a front tire going expressway speed in heavy traffic.
Approximately June 30, 2013, I was driving on an interstate at 65 mph when the low tire pressure light came on. I managed to cross 2 lanes and get to the side of the road to discover my front driver's side tire was flat. The cause of the flat was a broken valve stem. These are the aluminum valve stems used in the tire pressure monitoring system. I had it replaced. On November 22, 2013, only 5 months later, while traveling at a high rate of speed again, 65 mph, another of the aluminum valve stems broke. I did keep some of the pieces that I found. Unfortunately I had to travel approximately 1 mile on the tire that quickly went flat. There are only 52,000 miles on the vehicle. These are the original valve stems that came on the vehicle.

Low psi indicator on spare was on so I lowered the spare tire to put air in it and I noticed the valve stem was broke off at the top. After looking on the internet I found this is a common problem with Chrysler on their valve stems. It happens all the time on all wheels not just the spare. The cost to fix is around $100 a tire!!! in till Chrysler fixes their cheap valve stem sensor system I will put in the old fashion rubber valve stems and just put up with the dash lights!!!!.
I've had 2 valve stems crack. I drive only on the highway with this vehicle. I do not know what causes this.
2008 Jeep Liberty. Consumer states tire pressure monitor system is not working correctly. The consumer stated the tire valves failed twice. The first valve was replaced reluctantly and he was told that the second valve would not be replaced under warranty because it was cracked. The consumer stated he was unable to inflate the tire.

Traveling interstate 94, approximately 70 mph, unavoidable tire debris on roadway. My vehicle front passenger wheel struck rubber truck tire casing which just blew off truck. The valve stem of my tire broke off instantly deflating the tire. The valve stem is part of the siemens bdo tire pressure monitor system installed on daimler Chrysler vehicles and my Jeep Liberty. The stem broke at the stem cap thread. My dealership has reported many failures to daimler Chrysler there is no recall or replacement which fixes the fault. The assembly material is some aluminum alloy and will readily snap off if pressure is applied laterally at the tip of the valve stem even the brushes at the car wash break these valve stems.
