30 problems related to other fuel system tank assembly have been reported for the 2008 Jeep Patriot. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Every time I refill my tank with fuel, the first several minutes of driving the engine will hesitate and almost stall (or will stall if driving at slow speeds). While stopped in idle, engine will completely stall. Once some fuel is burned, the engine will no longer stall. This issue has been ongoing for years.
When the gas tank is full the service lights come on engine stalls out about half a mile down the road. The steering wheel locks up when the engine goes out so you cant even coast over to the side of the road.
Filled up gas tank and car stalled at stop light shortly after. Pulled into driveway after a 5-minute drive and steering wheel locked and car had stalled.
Every time I fill up the gas tank and then drive, the Jeep stalls, I lose steering, it is not safe. It has happened several times.
Every time the fuel tank is filled, the engine stalls a couple minutes after I pull out of the gas station. This has happened getting on highways and is a potentially deadly situation that apparently is well known with this vehicle. For whatever reason this has not been recalled yet and won't until somebody is killed. Please take action to get this recalled to repair the situation. This has happened on at least a dozen occasions so far.
After refueling the car to having a full tank of gas, a short distance later - usually less than one mile - the car suffers a severe hesitation and once stalled completely. The vehicle is always in motion and on a city street usually driving straight. It has happened many times, today being the most recent.
Jeep stalls and locks when gas tank is filled. Has happened in the middle of fast moving traffic a few times with my babies in the car. Very dangerous!.
After refueling my vehicle, shortly thereafter (within a few minutes) my 2008 Jeep Patriot stalls when ideling or traveling at lower speeds. Most recently the stall happened when merging onto a main road and could have resulted in a very serious accident. This is a very common occurrence in 2008 Jeep Patriots and needs to addressed sooner rather than later. Most remedies seem to be a rep lament of the fuel tank and vapor canister.
Approximately 12/2018 I had to have my gas tank replaced due to a faulty rollover valve/flapper/inlet check valve located in the gas tank. I am now having the same problem with the new gas tank. The cost to repair this problem is well over $1400 and to have to do the same repair twice is unthinkable. This has to be some sort of safety issue as well, because if these valves/flappers are supposed to expel air from the system, couldn't this be harming my vehicle more and/or cause pressure to build in the tank? there was TSB 14-001-09 rev a issued. Chrysler admits this is a big problem and has recalled a bunch of Jeeps, dodges, and some Chrysler town & country vans. However, my make and model (08 Patriot) is not covered under the extended warranty they issued for the gas tanks.
After fueling tank car will stall and or shut off while driving . Loss of power and steering will do this 2 to 3 times driving after fueling then will hesitate while driving happens after every fill . Lasts 1 to 2 days. Just got this car used found online happens often poss due to faulty tank rollover valve.
After fueling the Jeep it stalls when the next idle or two occurs. For example, after fueling, the Jeep is driven and stalls at the first stop light. Sometimes it occurs when trying to pull away from the gas station. It is very dangerous as the steering wheel locks up and you have to stop the vehicle and restart it in traffic. It only happens when fueling the tank to full. This is a safety issue as it could cause an accident pulling out into traffic from the gas station. It happens every time the tank is filled up.
My vehicle stalls every time after a gas fill up and has been happening every single time for about a year. The wheel locks and the car cuts off in the middle of the road. This is an extremely dangerous problem and happens 100% of the time after I put gas in my car. I did research and it is clear that this is a common problem (see attached link) and there is no solution for it except for a new tank. I do not think it's right to not recall this. It is expensive and not all of us can afford to fix it or buy a new car thus putting our lives and innocent drivers lives in danger. Please recall this. Jeeps are incredible cars that last 200k+ miles and I'd hate for this problem to seriously harm anyone. . Read more...
Engine stalls after fueling tank. During acceleration out of gas station, car jerks as it seems the air/fuel ratio is messed up. Car stalls when sitting at light or within a couple miles from the station at idle speed. I've resorted to shifting neutral and revving engine higher to counteract the stall. One instance was knocking/attempting to stall shortly after pulling from gas station, then operated fine on highway, but when exiting the Jeep stalled and lost all power to the system (power steering and brake booster). Waited a minute at light, then restarted and ran fine. Dealer informed me that there likely is a problem with the valve to the vapor canister and it sounds like there is liquid fuel getting in. He had a prompt answer for me, so it seems as if he's answered the question before with other owners.
Anytime I fill my gas tank completely, the engine stalls while I am driving, within less than a mile from the gas station. Steering wheel locks and I have to turn off the car, wait 10-20 seconds, then restart the car in order to continue driving.
Every time I fill up the fuel tank at a gas station and then drive off, the car - after being in motion will unexpectedly stall. It's usually about 20-30 seconds after driving away from the gas station that the engine stalls. This has happened at a stoplight, entering a busy highway and also just waiting in the gas station parking lot. This is dangerous!.
This past month of December '17 my 08 Jeep Patriot 4x4 with only 70,000 mileage had 3 repairs using dealer parts only. Richard grover e-mail dickgrover01@aol. Com phone 865 599-5759 1. Replaced fuel tank. Could not pump gas into it due to venting issue. Replaced with dealer tank. Vent hoses would not allow air passage. $800 2. Replaced abs eps system. $1,300 3. Replaced alternator. $400 no recall although significant similar problems noted on line with Jeep product. Please help! had to complete repairs to avoid being stranded.
At any gas pump I go to I can only put in about a gallon or so before the pump shuts off or overflows. It does this repeatedly until I have filled my tank. I have seen people with the same issue with Patriots in forums and no one can seem to pinpoint an issue other than replacing the gas tank. I believe the issue is with a faulty valve in the gas tank. I maintain my vehicle and do not believe I should be having this issue. I would appreciate any help or feedback. Thanks for your time.
Rollover valve - every time I filled the gas tank, there was significant jerking and occasional stalling. This didn't happen if I only filled partially. Within a mile there would be jerking, and stalling has happened while idling and while driving. Not only is that a huge safety concern, but in a vehicle rollover the valve prevents gas from spilling out and starting possible fires. Luckily I was only on local streets and not a highway when I stalled, but I have read other forums where people's Patriots stalled at higher speeds. The Jeep dealership and other mechanics seem to know this is a common flaw with Jeeps and chryslers built in the past 5-8 years. The only solution to replace the valve is to replace the entire fuel tank, which is extremely costly. This should definitely be recalled due to safety, but Chrysler seems to know about this issue and has done nothing.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Patriot. Each time the vehicle was filled with fuel, the vehicle would stall without warning while driving at any speed. The failure recurred numerous times. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic where the technician replaced the spark plug and suspected a sensor failure in the fuel tank. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 50,000.
When putting fuel in my vehicle, I am unable to put more than 1 gallon of gas in the tank. The pump keeps shutting off and gas starts pouring back out of the tank. I researched the problem online only to find there are a lot of Jeep owners experiencing the same problem. Other Jeep owners have tried to replacing the evap canister, only to experience the same issue again several weeks later. Then they end up having to replace the entire fuel tank. This is a dangerous issue that needs to be resolved before someone gets hurt if they haven't already. The fuel tank issues are issues that Jeep should be responsible for given the rate of occurrences for Jeep owners and expensive fix.
Cannot pump gas, pump shuts off after a few cents of gas is pumped. Very big safety hazard during pumping. After doing some research I have found that this seems to be a very common issue and requires the gas tank to be replaced. I took my vehicle to the mechanic and was told it was the rollover valve.
My Jeep Patriot stalls after getting gas. I saw online many others have reported same problem. It is a known defect of gas tank valve. Very dangerous as steering wheel locks when car stalls. Why has this not been recalled?.
Starting about 6 weeks ago the car will no longer take more than about 1/4 gallon of gas before clicking off. At first I thought it was the pump at costco but I have since experienced the issue at several other stations. It takes about 15 minutes to fill the tank from empty and will spit gas back if I am not careful. Checked the evap canister and filler neck. Based on research it appears the only solution is to replace the entire gas tank.
I have had trouble with my car taking in gasoline for the past year, it will let me pump in a little then the pump will automatically shut off like its full, but I have only pumped in a half of a gallon. It will do this the entire fill up, which will end up taking me close to 20 minutes for it to get full. Now recently over the past couple months, I have had issues with my car stalling right after I fill up my tank, I will pull up to the stop light to leave the gas station and it will stall. So I have to put it in park and restart it, sometimes it has done it for the first several stops, it will stall again when I come to a complete stop. It is also having hesitations while driving, almost like its stuttering, I have talked to several mechanics about this issue and no one can pinpoint the problem. Im starting to get concerned that its going to damage other parts of my car because of these problems.
About a year ago my Patriot started having issues after I would refill my gas tank to where the gas pump turns off. The vehicle would hesitate and shut off 4 or 5 times as I was leaving the station. I have also had several instances where the vehicle shuts off while I am driving down the interstate at speeds over 60 mph which is very dangerous. It has also shut off multiple times while idling when I haven't filled the tank. The dealership has replaced the purge valve solenoid and alternator at my cost thinking that would fix my problem but nothing has worked. They also recommended I replace the fuel tank at my cost, but after already pouring over $1000 into the vehicle, I was hesitant to spend $1500 more. I have been avoiding the problem by only putting about 10 gallons of fuel maximum in my tank. Two weeks ago the vehicle made a loud banging noise and lights started flashing on the dash and the vehicle wouldn't go over 20 mph. Luckily I was only about a mile from another Jeep dealership. This time the crank shaft sensor was bad. Another $800 fix. I told this dealership of the other problems I was experiencing with the car shutting off and they thought this may fix my problem. Then about 5 days later, upon trying to refuel my vehicle, I was unable to put more than 1 gallon of gas in the tank. The pump kept shutting off and gas started pouring back out of the tank. The fuel tank issues are issues that I think Jeep should be responsible for given the rate of occurrences for Jeep owners.
I had just filled the tank as usual and drove about 500 yards to a red light. In the past after a fill up, the Jeep would stall and "buck" around 30 mph, as if it couldn't get into gear, even though this is a cvt. I thought this might happen again, but it didn't this time, which was curious. At the light, upon attempting to accelerate there was no response from the throttle, and the car remained in drive, but refused to move. I could not shift out of gear into neutral. A red light in the upper left corner of the dash came on and began to beep, and the entire dashboard lit up, with every light coming on and making noise. Eventually, I lost all power and waited more than an hour for a tow truck in the middle of a three lane avenue. The mechanic told me a relay was entirely blown and blackened, and this had killed the battery. This was replaced at no cost to me, but he said they could not find what had caused the relay to blow. Essentially, what occurred was a symptom, not the cause, and would happen again. The car is currently sitting, deemed unsafe to drive. I also had lower ball joints replaced at 55,000 miles, which is far too early. I love Jeep, but I hate the 2007-2010 Patriots. Bad buy.
The contact owns a 2008 Jeep Patriot. The contact stated that the vehicle was difficult to refuel. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician diagnosed that the check valve was fractured and the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 79,000.
My Jeep Patriot, after refueling, the engine cuts out. This happens every time I get gas in my vehicle. Sometimes it stalls in the middle of an intersection, which can be quite dangerous. When it does this, the vehicle needs to be turned off and then on again, it will go a few yards and then stall again. I have contacted Chrysler and the refuse to acknowledge a problem. I know a few other Jeep Patriot owners have complained about the same thing. My local Jeep dealer told me to just not fill my gas tank over halfway. . Read more...
I went to my local gas station to refuel my Jeep. After pumping in 38 cents the pump clicked. I removed the nozzle and tried again and it clicked once more. It took 11 minutes to pump my tank full. I contacted Chrysler who refused to help with any assistance to fix my vehicle and stated I would first have to pay for a diagnostic with a Chrysler dealership, (which in my area never answers the phone and never has an appointment time open) wants 115 for a diagnostic. I had my Ford dealer diagnose the issue and they explained that the vent line in the top of the fuel tank is clogged. On this particular vehicle, according to alldata, this part is not service able which means I have to replace the entire fuel tank which is quoted at 922 for the part and between 400-600 for installation. That is absoultely unacceptable. I would like to see what can be done to resolve this issue because I really dont see how refueling my tank will cause this issue. I think this is a manufacturer defect and the manufacturer should be held responsible.
This issue started a few years ago when our 2008 Jeep Patriot was approximately 5 years old. Almost every time we fill the tank with gas, immediately to within the first couple of hours the car will shudder and stall, then it has a hard time restarting. We have had the vapor purge valve and canister changed 3 times which seemed to fix it the first 2 times, but only temporarily. This has been quite disturbing since it has stalled in traffic, usually when coming to a stop at a light or to make a turn, but a couple of times it stalled while driving home from the gas station. It is usually ok after sitting over night, but it has had the same issue the following day a few times. None of the dealerships or repair shops that we have talked to seem to have any idea what the issue could be. I have found that not topping off the tank fully, the issue seems to occur much less often, but the fear of it stalling while driving is constant, and is still a major issue to this day.
