36 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/04/2014

I purchased a 2009 Jeep Wrangler new. I have not modified my car in any way, nor have I ever taken it "off-road or four-wheeling". in March 2014 I experienced my first "¿¿death wobble",¿ an extremely violent, shaking of the front wheels. Since then, it has happened numerous times, resulting in repairs (that still haven'¿¿t solved the problem) totaling over $2000. 00. I'm hesitant to take it in for repairs again because no one knows how to fix this problem and I don'¿¿t have the money to keep making repairs for an unknown problem. Chrysler/Jeep needs to recognize this as being a safety hazard. I'¿¿ve researched this extensively and I am not the only one experiencing this problem. The only time it happens is when I'¿¿m going 40 mph or more, primarily on the highway. The only way to re-gain control is to slow down quickly and pull over or come to a complete stop (which could result in an accident on the highway). Chrysler/Jeep must recognize that this is a serious safety issue and provide a remedy/recall and monetary compensation for this problem.

37 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/13/2014

While driving on the highway around 65 mph I encountered a bump in the road and the front of the car began to shake uncontrollably. I had to come to a complete stop on the highway to regain control of the vehicle. I got out of the vehicle and checked for any visible issues, but found nothing, so I continued with my trip. This occurred again later that same day in very similar circumstances, I was traveling around 65 mph hit a dip in the road, at a transition where the bridge overpass meets the asphalt, the car again began to shake uncontrollably in the front of the vehicle, and I had to stop the vehicle again to regain control and stop the shaking. After a little research I learned this is a know issue with Jeeps know as the Jeep death wobble.

38 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/14/2014

When my Jeep hits a bump the front end shakes violently. It will continue until I come to a complete stop.

39 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/06/2014

My wife and I were going shopping, we had traveled approximately 6 miles from ou home, we were crossing over the expansion joint of a bridge. The vehicle started to shake and vibrating wildly. I immediately slowed down and eventually came almost to a stop, so as to stop the skaking and vibrating. Within a few days I made an appointment with the service department at the dealer where I had purchased the vehicle. I explained to them what had happened, their response was "OH, so you experienced the Jeep Wrangler death wobble". I asked what they were going to do about it. Their response was, well we can try a more heavy duty steering stabelizer. I said ok, let's do it. They installed it and it cost me $204. 05. I left and proceeded to go home. The same type of shaking and vibrating started again. I made another appointment, and the said that they would try an extra heavy duty stabelizer. They did. It cost me $150. 00. I didn't want to pay anything, but the general manager and I negotiated, with the understanding that if the extra heavy duty stabelizer didn't stop the problem, that he would refund, to me, the full amount that I had paid. The extra heavy duty stabelizer did not fix the problem, however the problem does not occur as often. I did receive a full refund, which is great, but the problem is still there. My feeling is, that the extra heavy duty stabelizer simply covers up the problem. There are times that I can feel the front end of the vehicle starting to shake and vibrate. According to the internet (Jeep Wrangler death wobble), is a fairly common happening, and that Jeep/Chrysler are full well aware of it, but have done nothing. I also understand that national transportation safety board, is aware of the problem, but thus far has not done anything to force Jeep/Chrysler to fix it. Maybe there haven't been any/enough deaths yet!.

40 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/20/2013

Death wobble, uncontrollable violent shaking between 30 & 50 mph. Serious safety issue at highway speeds being unable to control the vehicle's steering out of harms way. I have had it to two different dealerships three different times and I'm told that there is nothing wrong with it. It's obvious that there is a problem and I'm not the only one with this issue. A quick internet search on Jeep death wobble will confirm this. Chrysler needs to be held accountable and fix this problem before someone gets killed!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

41 Steering problem

Failure Date: 10/22/2013

While traveling on interstate at 60mph, during a turn, and after hitting a bump: steering starts to shake violently and car is out of control until it slowed down to 15mph or less.

42 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2013

Driving down the road at approx 50mph, hit a small bump and the Jeep started to shake violently back and forth. I had to grab the wheel with both hands push on the break. I pulled to the side of the road, thinking my tire had fallen off (everything was still there). When I got home I did some research on the internet and found this is a common problem with Jeeps, they have labelled it "Jeep death wobble". I live in yosemite national park, which has windy roads with no guard rails. If this happens again while driving on tioga rd. I don't doubt it could end in a fatality. This "death wobble" now has me scared to drive my Jeep and I'm not the only Jeep owner that feels the same way.

43 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/17/2013

Warning light for airbag system is activating every 30-50 seconds. Contacted my service department, they stated it is a "clock spring" in the steering system. Apparently, there are many claims for this from Jeep Wrangler owners.

44 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/27/2013

On the 2009 Jeep Wrangler (lhd) dashboard, the airbag warning light flashes on every other minute with a chime, an indication that there is something malfunctioning or interfering with the vehicle's airbags. This has been a recurring issue and concern for many 2007-2010 Jeep Wrangler (lhd) owners, including myself, and has been shown time and time again to be caused by a faulty clockspring within the vehicle's steering wheel. In conversations with my dealership as well as Chrysler, there was an extended warranty (10yr/150,000mi) issued to the 2007 model year and a recall issued for 2008 (rhd) models. For any other model years, Chrysler has refused to address the safety concern of their faulty clockspring, knowing that it can cause failure of the vehicle's airbags from properly deploying, thus putting vehicle occupants at risk. This has been going on for approx a week at this point, at varying speeds and varying road conditions. Being that I drive approx 30,000mi per year, this is a major concern!.

45 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/20/2013

Cpsc: i1440019a. 2009 Jeep Wrangler xl. Consumer stated that around 32,000 miles, his vehicle developed what is called the "death wobble", uncontrolled shimmy at highway speeds which only resolves by braking and coming to a near stop. After great effort, Chrysler reimbursed the consumer $849. 07 of the $ 1793. 47 he paid to have the entire front end rebuilt. The dealer replaced the steering damper with an updated assembly which required different hardware, to fix the problem. The consumer filed a complaint with Chrysler for reimbursement, for $336. 67. They reimbursement him for the parts only. The consumer continued to experience problems, so the dealer did a complete examination of the vehicle, and found all 4 ball joints and drag link were out of specifications.

46 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/12/2013

In August 2013 my Jeep Wrangler began to develop an unpredictable, uncontrollable, violent shimmy at highway speeds. Sometimes a small bump or a lane change would set an event off. Shimmy did not stop without hard braking and coming to a near stop. Commonly referred to as "death wobble". The first attempt at repair, mileage 30,381, was to replace the factory installed steering damper with a upgraded steering damper. The new steering damper required different hardware to install. My cost, $366. 77 which Chrysler reimbursed the cost of parts @ $266. 77. I am $100. 00 out of pocket for labor costs to replace this defective part which was installed at the factory! the problem of uncontrolled shimmy was not fixed! the second attempt to repair my vehicle, mileage 32,982, was to balance and rotate all tires. The problem was not fixed! the third attempt to repair my vehicle, mileage 33,902, involved replacing all four defective ball joints and a defective drag link assembly. Cost to me, $1793. 47. Chrysler eventually reimbursed the cost of parts @ $849. 07. On this repair I am out of pocket $944. 40 labor costs to replace defective parts as installed at the factory! I have filed a complaint with the better business bureau (case #9919310) and the case is still ongoing. No vehicle operated under normal conditions should have to have major components, which affect vehicle control and safety, fail and need replacement at less than 34,000 highway driven miles! I do not read anywhere on my service receipts stating the parts that have been replaced carry any warranty. I am very concerned that genuine Jeep parts are of the same quality as originally used by Jeep to manufacture my vehicle, and will fail again within the next 30,000 to 35,000 miles, if not sooner!.

47 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/12/2013

At highway speed (50-70 mph) vehicle would shake violently after hitting a bump. Vehicle needs to come to a complete stop to correct the wobble. After a little on line research, I discovered "death wobble. " service writers at both milosch palace Jeep and al deeby Jeep knew right away what I was talking about. I cannot believe there is not a safety recall for this. It seems everyone with knowledge of Jeeps is aware of the issue. This is very dangerous on highways\interstates, especially for inexperienced drivers, because the vehicle needs to come to a stop to in order to stop the wobble. I am sure no one really cares what I have to say, but Jeep is very dirty on this one. I am a 45 year mechanical engineer in the automotive field. Can someone please tell me why there has not been a safety recall for this?.

48 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/02/2013

Tl-the contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler 2dr-4x4. The contact stated while driving 40 mph over a slight bump the vehicle began to vibrate violently. The vehicle was taken to both an authorized dealer and independent mechanic for diagnosis. The steering damper was replaced. The manufacturer was not notified of the defect. The approximate failure mileage was 23,900. Js.

49 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/21/2013

I drove over a dip in the road at approximately 45mph and my car started shaking uncontrollably. I truly felt the car was coming apart and I would wreck. I let off the gas and the shaking stopped. I have since discovered the "death wobble" and feel this is exactly what happened to me.

50 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2013

On the 2009 Jeep Wrangler (lhd) dashboard, the airbag warning light flashes on every other minute with a chime, an indication that there is something malfunctioning or interfering with the vehicle's airbags. This has been a recurring issue and concern for many 2009 Jeep Wrangler (lhd) owners, including myself, and has been shown time and time again to be caused by a faulty clockspring within the vehicle's steering wheel. This faulty clockspring is the culprit for potential airbag failure in the 2009 Jeep Wrangler (lhd) during an accident or premature deployment when simply driving around. Daimler Chrysler has refused to address the safety concern of their faulty clockspring that can cause failure of the vehicle's airbags from properly deploying. A recall is in effect for the same issue but only for rhd 2008-2012 Jeep Wranglers.

51 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2013

Driving at 50 mph and faster, when the vehicle hits a bump the steering starts to shake uncontrollably. The wheels shimmy from side to side and only stops when the vehicle slows to below 40 mph, and in some instances only stops when the vehicle comes to a complete stop. This is extremely scary and dangerous especially when it occurs on the highway, as you need to weave through traffic at a high speed to find a safe place to pull over. This issue is well known throughout the Jeep community, as it has it's own nickname the "death wobble". Chrysler has acknowledged that this has become a common issue among their vehicles; however, has done nothing in the form of recalls or service to help customers fix the issue. In a report by abc news, they stated that there have been over 600 reports of the same issue I have experienced. I brought my vehicle to a Chrysler certified auto shop to get it fixed and they could not identify the problem. They did a front end alignment on my car saying that might fix the problem; however, it did not. The "death wobble" has occurred in my vehicle 5 times since the initial incident in April.

52 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/24/2013

Today while driving down the road with kids hit a bump in road at 35 mph and the Jeep went into death wobble. Then something broke and I lost all steering power and could not turn wheels. Almost had a wreck. When I got the vehicle to a place to look at it the steering box had broken off.

53 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/18/2013

Last night I turned my car on. . . I noticed the airbag light stayed on longer than usual it went of but a couple minutes later it lighted up again for a couple seconds and from then it has been doing it, while driving it I noticed that my cruise control and horn are not working. I read a lot about the issue and I can for sure say its the clock spring, this makes a lot of sense when I bought the car in 2009 I received the car with a broken clock spring I had to go back the next day so they could replace it.

54 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/26/2013

While driving approximately 45mph I experienced a violet shaking of the steering wheel and could not control the vehicle until the speed slowed to approximately 15mph. I researched on the internet and someone said Jeep used a bolt smaller than the hole on a track bar that connects the front axle to the vehicle and this gets wallowed out and causes this.

55 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2013

While driving my Jeep Wrangler 2009, I hit a bump in the road and the car went into the death wobble - violently shaking from side-to-side. The only way to stop it was to slow down or come to a near stop and then continue. It does this very often now - usually starts somewhere between 35-55 mph and just after hitting a bump.

56 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/20/2013

Every time since February when I hit a bump the Jeep starts shaking violently. I keep hearing of it being the Jeep death wobble. It has torn up my tires and affected many parts and now I can not even hit a bump at 30 mph without it starting to shake. Not sure what to do to fix. I called my dealer to see what they suggested and they had never heard of the Jeep death wobble which Chrysler had apparently sent out a notice to all companies about it. I have heard of several complaints on this. My Jeep is stock and never been modified and never been taken off road. It is a family vehicle and now I just want to get rid of it!.

57 Steering problem

Failure Date: 02/10/2013

I was driving home at 60-65mph from baltimore with my cousin, fiancé and aunt when I hit a minor pothole. The entire steering wheel/front section starts to violently shake and I was unable to stop it until I stepped on the breaks and slowed the car down to almost 25 mph on the highway and almost drove off to the side of the road. This happened 4 other times following that incident in a matter of 2 weeks’ time. Finally I called the dealership where I purchased the car. They told me it was the steering dampener and that I would have to replace it. They also told me that I had to pay for the part, even though I had purchased an extended warranty from them. I was told that this was very common on Jeeps and although there have not been any reported deaths, I am positive this will one day lead to an accident and /or death. This is a very serious defect on Jeep’s part and they need to address the issue before they kill someone. By the way, my car only has 37k miles on it. Still fairly new!.

58 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/18/2013

I was driving on the interstate going 65 mph and all of a sudden the Jeep started shaking uncontrollably. I thought I was going to wreck and I was in a panic. I slowed down to an unsafe speed to make it stop. Then I exited and checked the vehicle out to my surprise everything was fine. So I got back on the road and continued on. Then I had to exit and it started doing it again. This time is was so violent I thought I was going to go off the exit and crash. I have never had a lift on my Jeep or anything it is all manufacture parts. I believe with all my heart that Jeep has made a faulty front end. When I contacted them they said they didn't know how to fix it. Please recall this it is very dangerous and going to get someone killed.

59 Steering problem

Failure Date: 01/01/2013

The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that NHTSA campaign number 13v234000 (power train, steering) had exceeded a reasonable time for repair. The dealer advised the part was not available for repair. The manufacturer was not contacted. The contact did not experience a failure.

60 Steering problem

Failure Date: 12/11/2012

I hit a bump in the road and the front end began shaking so badly I had to slow down to almost a complete stop to get it to quit. Since then this has happened a number of times but it is very random when it happens and tyically I need to slow down to almost a stop to get it to quit. This will be very dangerous if it happens on a busy roadway and I have to slowdown to almost a stop to get it to quit.

61 Steering problem

Failure Date: 11/09/2012

While driving my vehicle down the interstate for about 10 min at a speed of about 72miles per hr, my Jeep started shaking from the front and back. It was so intense I felt as though I was going to crash. I have had tires blow and u joints go bad and this didn't compare. I don't drive in a rough terrain and not often at these speeds. But I felt as though I had no control. When I decelerated to 50 the shaking had stopped. There had been no previous warning of this problem. When taking it in to get looked at the dealer said there was nothing wrong. The next day I took it in for the same problem and my universals need replaced, axle seals are bad and my drive shaft needs to be replace.

62 Steering problem

Failure Date: 09/27/2012

I was driving the Jeep down the highway through construction zone and it vibrated violently after I drove over a bump. I had to slow down very quickly during rush hour and was almost hit in the rear by another care so the wabble would go away. I took it to have it fixt and was told this is common. I looked it up online and was amazed. For a newer vehicale I was floored that it was not covered by Jeep. I have an extended warranty too. I took it to Jeep and they told me I had to pay to fix it, so what was I going to do drive and unsafe car (and it is unsafe, another car almost hit me). I paid to have it fixed. They replaced a damper and guess what there is still a wabble. This is the most rediculas issue and yet Jeep will not stand behind a poor design that they clearly know is a problem. So, I am looking for help making it know that if there is an accident involving this problem I have advised Jeep and now NHTSA. I will surely contact an attorney and become very public that there has been warning of this. All I want is for my wife and kids to be safe in a car. Jeep should step up and correct there problem.

63 Steering problem

Failure Date: 08/02/2012

While crossing 2 lanes of on coming traffic in the middle of the day the abs, esp and traction control lights came on and would not let me push the gas along with the right front brake "locking up". Because of the traction control coming on when I accelerate from a stop, even slowly, the engine responds as if I was slipping and losing traction, sputtering power and then all of a sudden it just stops. Now this has happened a few times within the last couple of days which is very scary considering there is absolutely no warning and can happen at any speed while driving. I have read some other forums on this issue and it seems to be pretty common with the make, model and year of this vehicle. This should not be taken lightly and should be fixed by Chrysler as it is a manufacturing defect.

64 Steering problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2012

While driving at 55 mph on a slight turning radius, the right front started to vibrate, then it went to the left side, back to the left side, back and forth. Each time it transferred, it increased. The severity of the wobble effect. I had to put a "death grip" on the steering wheel to maintain control of the vehicle. The only way that I could stop the "death wobble" was to pull off the road and stop the vehicle. It was like a demon took control of the vehicle. The next day the vehicle did the same thing while I was driving with my daughter(age 29). This time on a straight section of road going at 45 mph. She thought that the tire fell off! again, the only way that I was able to stop the wobble was to stop the vehicle. Both of these incidents could have ended in serious accidents! this is a well maintained stock vehicle with balanced tires.

65 Steering problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

Vehicle would occasionally experience a violent shaking from the front wheels when traveling approximately 50-60 mph. Seemed to typically be initiated by small bump in the road. Only way to stop the shaking was to almost come to a complete stop - less than 10 mph. Took vehicle to mechanic who determined the steering stabilizer was defective.

66 Steering problem

Failure Date: 05/09/2012

Violent front wheels wobble after hitting a bump on a road.

67 Steering problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2012

Hit railroad tracks at approximately 55 mph. Front of vehicle started to shake uncontrollably. Took to dealership which changed steering dampener. The same problem happened approximately two weeks later. Two more trips to the dealership with no solution.

68 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/15/2012

I live in sacramento, California. I experienced what is being referred to as "wrangler death wobble" on or about 11:55 p. M. On March 15, 2012, while I driving southbound on interstate 5 near east los angeles. This incident resulted in and substantial physical damage to the undercarriage/suspension/steering components of the vehicle. The weld of the track bar housing/bracket on the axle side was ripped completely off of the front axle. There was a total loss of control of the vehicle. It took about 30 seconds to bring it under control by applying brakes and holding on to the violently shaking steering wheel. The car swerved into adjacent lanes. Fortunately, there were no cars next to me a the time. I purchased the 2009 Wrangler from folsom lake Ford in folsom, CA on January 28, 2012, only 46 days before I experienced the Wrangler death wobble. The track bar housing was re-welded to the axle and a gusset added in los angeles to allow me to return home. I incurred significant costs for repairs. Two expert technicians have examined the suspension and concluded that there is no question the defect existed when I purchased the vehicle and that the obvious defect and "play" should have been detected by routine visual inspection. Folsom lake Ford v. P. Of operations, john sears refuses to even inspect the vehicle to see whether it is now safe to drive or take any action at all to fix the damage. [xxx] has stated in writing that my only recourse is to take legal action against folsom lake Ford. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

69 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/14/2012

After hitting a pot hole Jeep started to shake violently, would not stop until it came to a complete stop. It has happened several time since.

70 Steering problem

Failure Date: 03/01/2012

Death wobble as shown on websites, going 50 or so miles per hour , front end wobbles uncontrollably!! uncontrollable, extremely unsafe at time ,when shaking and wobble starts!!! has almost caused an accident on each of the <<<3>>> times this has occurred!!! why is NHTSA and Jeep waiting for people to be killed before something is done to help everyone on the highway with this obvious safety issue??? very scary and frustrating. Think of your family's life as well as all of us!!! we are all at risk . How many lives need to be lost????.
