20 problems related to tank assembly have been reported for the 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The most recently reported issues are listed below.
When filling with fuel there is always a large burp of fuel where the gas spills all over the place when tank is full.
I have a 2009 Jeep Wrangler and every time I fill up the gas, it spills out. Chrysler/Jeep knows of the "fuel spill back during refueling" danger. Gas splashes out of tank during refueling (apparent check valve manufacturer defect). Also, possible gas spill during roll over. Chrysler issued traffic safety bulletin, dated February 11, 2011, (TSB) # 14-001-11 for extended warranty (lifetime) for Jeep Wranglers with 3. 8l engine built between March 1, 2007 & March 31, 2008. Gas tanks being replaced. My 2009 Jeep Wrangler (same engine, exact same defective check valve) also, splashes gas back at you during refueling, but is not included in bulletin, due to my vehicle 'built on' date being too late. Neither gas tank nor check valve had been redesigned to make safe, as of the cut off date in bulletin. Dealer service department states that they see this problem all the time (they call it 'burping').
Not sure about the exact date or mileage but approximately two months ago, gasoline began spilling out of my gas tank while filling up the vehicle. I was not trying to "top it off" as it doesn't even click. It has happened every time I try to fill up since the first occurrence. It has happened at numerous gas stations. I now have to estimate how much gas to enter into my vehicle so it does not overflow. Several times gasoline has spilled onto my clothing.
The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler 4x4. The contact stated that fuel spilled out from the filler neck while refueling. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they stated that the vehicle needed a new fuel tank. The manufacturer was notified and they advised the contact that there were no recalls affecting the vehicle. No further assistance was offered. The failure mileage was approximately 45,000. Updated 03/05/lj the consumer stated Chrysler offered to cover the cost of the repair, minus a $102 deductible. The tank was replaced. Updated 03/06/12.
Approximately 1/4 gallon of gas back flows forcefully out of filler neck immediately following the release of the handle when the tank is full. This happens both when the handle is locked down in the fueling position and automatically clicks off and when I'm holding the handle to fill the tank. At no time am I attempting to overfill the tank beyond the safety shut off. This happens 100 percent of the time with the result of fuel landing on the rear fender, bumper, my clothes, shoes, and leaves a manhole cover size spot of fuel on the pavement.
Gas overflows and spits out when filling the tank.
I purchased my vehicle used in September of 2011 with 27k miles on it and every time I fill up my gas tank I end up with gasoline overflow. Basically, I stick the gas nozzle in and when it is automatically finished, some gasoline spits back out of the tank all over the car, the ground and at times myself. This has happened every time, regardless of gas station or what state I am in (indiana, illinois and kentucky). The only solution is the manually pump the gas and estimate when it is almost full and stop. This is hardly practical and should be fixed. I see that the issue has been acknowledged by a simple google. Com search but only for the 2007-2008 Jeep Wranglers. Mine is a 2009 with the same exact issue.
When I go to fill the gas tank of my 2009 Jeep Wrangler unlimited gas comes burping out of the hole where you fill it.
Fuel tank spills out every time I fill the tank.
Within the past several months I cannot fill up my gas tank without gas spilling out before the tank cuts off. This happens at all gas stations every time I fill up. The dealer told me the tubing needed to be replaced so they did it. But, I still had the problem. Now they are telling me the charcoal cartridge is clogged and has blocked the vent into the gas tank. This will now need replacing. Because I am just outside my warranty, Chrysler has agreed to cover most of the cost. Each time I have to pay a deductible because the dealer keeps deciding it is something else that is causing the problem. I have researched the problem online and it appears to be a common problem in Jeeps. Why hasn't Chrysler corrected this problem? I read there was a recall of the problem in '07-'08 Jeeps, but only those years. If the problem was acknowledged, why is it still happening in '09 Jeeps?.
When filling my gas tank up, gas will overflow out of the filler tube, onto the side of my Jeep, onto the bumper and onto the ground when it is full or close to being full. The gas nozzle will shut off, but a lot of gas pours out. Even when I manually hold the nozzle to slow the flow down, it still spills over. This has happened on 3 different pumps at the same station. The station is a newer station, around 5 years old.
Every time I fill up at gas station my tank overflows. Is becoming a big concern. Know of others that have the same problem.
My 2009 Jeep Wrangler will overflow gas onto the side of the Jeep onto the ground every time I fill the gas tank up when using any gas station's automatic shut-off. I do not "top off" the tank. I have tried 5 different gas stations to make sure this was not limited to my usual gas stations. I have also tried filling the take up at slower speeds, but it still overflows. This issue started approximately at 20k miles. This is a serious safety issue not only for me but other people using the gas pump after me. On spark from static electricity could cause a fire/explosion.
When fueling the nozzle clicks and gas stops from the pump to the vehicle, a second later you can hear a rush of fuel coming up the neck of the tank and then spits out of the vehicle. Approximately 1/2 gallon or more is spilled all over the vehicle, person filling and the ground. I have attempted over time to listen and pay attention to how much gas is almost full in the tank but the pressure continues to push the fuel out. I have contacted Chrysler and no resolution. This is a safety hazard, as well as an environmental hazard with all the gas that is spilled on the location and later washed away into drainage. Also, when me filling not as concerned but some incidents of this happening to younger members of household have me concerned.
Gas overflows from tank through fuel filler neck as gas pump shuts off. Can happen without topping off fuel. Fuel runs down side of vehicle. Possible fire hazard ?.
I own a 2009 Jeep Wrangler 2 door model that has been having issues when I fill up my gas tank. I have seen on numerous online forums that I am not alone in this matter. When I use the pump to fill my tank it will auto shut off the pump then spew at least 2-3 cups of gasoline out of the gas intake onto the side of my vehicle, ground and on occasion myself. I have read that many have also filled a compliant so that Chrysler will perform a recall while others have paid out of pocket to fix this issues. I do not feel that it is fair to have paying customers pay for an obvious design or fuel system flaw.
2009 Jeep unlimied x has a problem with gas overflow when fililing the tank. If you use the auto shutoff on the any gas pump gas sprays everywhere when the tank is full. Dealerships say there is no problem when it was checked. Yet it continues to do this.
About 1/2 a galon of gas overflows and spills when filling up the gas tank of a 2009 Jeep Wrangler. This happens everytime I fill up the tank and the side body panel and part of the rear bumper as well as the ground get soaked with gasoline. I've contacted the dealer regarding the issue but since a recent recall only includes 2007 and 2008 models, my Jeep could not get fixed.
The contact owns a 2009 Jeep Wrangler. The contact stated that while refueling the vehicle, gasoline fuel would spew from the fuel tank onto the contact and the ground. The contact had not yet taken the vehicle to the dealer regarding the fuel tank failure. The contact stated the failure was a major safety issue that could potentially cause a fire. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 17,100.
Purchased new 2009 Jeep rubicon and picked it up at the dealership on wed. 3/3/09 with 6 miles on the odometer. Drove less than 2 miles to private property and drove up dirt hill (nothing that a Jeep couldn't handle) & it got stuck. Left rear wheel wasn't turning even though in 4w low. The wheel should have been able to move the entire vehicle since it was in 4-wheel drive. The driver got out to check the wheel and the fire was under the back of the vehicle & a loose hose was leaking some liquid. The driver tried to put out fire and was unable to. The fuel tank cracked (unkown if due to fire or if it caused the fire) and Jeep continued to burn since tank was full. The vehicle is a complete loss. Driver sustained second degree burns to right hand and his legs. No other injuries. The car fire started a small grass fire that was quickly contained. No structures were damaged, less than an acre burned. The dealership towed away the car for inspection. It is still unknown as to the reason for the wheel failure and the start of the fire.
