Five problems related to steering is tight have been reported for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2020

While driving on highway the steering wheel became stiff for about a couple of seconds, when it got back to normal it corrected into incoming traffic, I nearly hit incoming traffic,it was pretty scary cause the steering was very hard and stiff , I was trying to correct the vehicle cause it was moving towards the left even though I was trying to correct it to the right, when it loosened up it jerked hard to the left to incoming traffic, thankfully there was no incoming traffic at the time, also I noticed that when I put the transmission in gear there's no movement, it acts like it's in neutral, I have to put it back in park and reshift.

2 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 12/07/2020

So today it's a little on the cold side. I jumped into the Jeep and onto the highway and get up to 60mph. The car in front of me decides to pretty much stop in my lane. Very little time to react, I try to turn into the lane to my right and the steering feels really stiff like the tire is against something then suddenly there is no resistance causing me to overcorrect and nearly lose control of the Jeep. Sitting on the side of the road, the steering feels normal. I speed back up and as I get up to around 50-60mph the steering suddenly feels very tight again, not wanting to turn more than 15-20 degrees, then it goes away and a bit further down the road it suddenly comes back. I think litebrite had a video of this a while back. I've never had any steering issues with my jl. It drives absolutely great but I have to say this is terrifying because it felt like someone was holding the steering wheel to prevent me from turning and then suddenly just let go causing over correction.

3 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 06/19/2019

Steering down the road is lose and hard to keep Jeep straight while going down the road. I have replaced the steering stabilizer to fix the "death wobble" but the steering problem is still there and worsening.

4 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 11/10/2018

Was driving at 9:30 am on eldorado parkway in frisco TX, outside air temperature was ~ 45 deg f. When I attempted to to turn left, the steering wheel was incredibly tight and I nearly drifted into the lane to the right. I contacted the closest dealer immediately and they advised me that they were not aware of any issue. Less than 48 hour later they contacted me stating that there was a bulletin and they did a software update to correct. On the internet, I found bulletin 08-092-18 that described the issue. Given the nature of the problem, I no longer trust this vehicle.

5 Steering Is Tight problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

I bought the Jeep over the phone so did not drive it before purchase. Upon taking delivery I noticed it seemed to be hard to keep in my lane, but attributed this to not being familiar with the vehicle. The more I drove the vehicle I realized it was not normal. It wanders or drifts and is very hard, if not impossible to keep in my lane. I took to the Jeep dealer and was told it was normal. I did some on line research and discovered that many owners of this product are having similar problems. The dealer here acknowledges they are having a lot of complaints but nothing they can do. I contacted Jeep and they had me take it back to check tightness of steering components and align the front end. This did not help at all. Contacted Jeep again and was told someone would be calling me back. No one did. This vehicle is unsafe to drive. If you look at complaints online you will soon discover that Jeep is aware of the issue, but doing nothing. Someone is going to get hurt. I, many times have drifted into the lane next to me and there is so much play in the steering that it is hard to correct. When I go over a narrow bridge a try to stay as far from side of bridge to avoid hitting the side of the bridge. I have had many others drive the vehicle to verify what I am saying and every person has had an alarmed response. The vehicle is unsafe to drive, and Jeep knows it.
