Steering Is Loose problems of the 2018 Jeep Wrangler - part 1

42 problems related to steering is loose have been reported for the 2018 Jeep Wrangler. The most recently reported issues are listed below.

1 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 04/25/2021

I purchased the Jeep Wrangler as the first owner in 2018. I immediately felt inconsistencies with the steering. The steering felt loose. At the time I expressed my concern to the dealership that I purchased the Jeep from, I was told that there was a recall on my Jeep for the death wobble and that it was likely the result of that. The recall work was completed within the first 12 months of purchase. The recall repair did not resolve the issue. The steering continued to feel loose and as time went on became more evident. When driving on the expressway onto an exit at 40-50mph I followed the slight curve and the steering felt unstable and wandered. The best way to describe what occurred would be that it felt like the frame was falling off the wheels. This continued more frequently and last week became unmanageable. While driving 70mph down the expressway, I was unable to maintain control of the vehicle. It felt like I was driving a boat on water. I felt confident that the frame of the Jeep was leaving the wheels. At this time I noticed that the gears were slipping as well. I made an appointment to have my transmission examined. The earliest available appointment is 6 days out, so I decided to sneak under the Jeep to see if there was a transmission leak. What I observed was shocking to find on a 2018 vehicle and considerably overwhelming. My degree is criminal science, so far from having any automative/engineering experience and knowledge, but contextual clues are evidentiary clear to me. The feeling of the frame being displaced from the body of the vehicle is a probable result. I have a deep concern with the current condition of the welding of the frame and the condition of the underbody.

2 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 06/01/2020

Steering wheel loose and has a lot of play. Also when driving on the highway over 50 mph and hit a pot hole or a small bump, vehicle rear wobbles and almost have to come to a complete stop.

3 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 03/11/2020

The steering issue began as a shutter and vibration at highway speeds when going over a bump or a rut. The dealership has taken the vehicle in and kept it on three separate occasions. The issue has subsided a bit but now the vehicle's alignment is off and the steering is very loose. You have to keep the steering wheel turned to the one o'clock position, to the right, while driving at highway speeds or the Jeep will drive off of the left side of the road. The vehicle constantly drifts while driving so you need to maneuver the wheel back and forth constantly to keep the Jeep on the road. The wheel is sloppy with a lot of play for the first inch or two on either side. The dealer has not been able to fix this issue and it is an absolute safety hazard. This is my only personal vehicle so I don't have another option. I purchased the Jeep brand new and it has never been in an accident or abused. This Jeep needs to be recalled or replaced. It is unacceptable that best Jeep Chrysler in Plymouth, MA won't correct the issue or replace the Jeep. The fm radio, bluetooth, and clock are also broken and they have not been able to fix that either.

5 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 11/21/2019

Steering feels loose and has play. Unsafe.

6 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 11/04/2019

My steering is loose at highway speeds even after the dampener recall and new trac bar were installed. It is dangerous on the highway even with a small amount of wind.

7 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 10/12/2019

In July of 19 I purchased my 2018 Jeep Wrangler sport s 4dr from a local dealership. About 1000 miles into ownership I began noticing loose steering with excessive play. I took the Jeep in for service and a flash TSB was performed, the problem was better, but still present. At the same time I was also part of the weld recall no repair needed. I started noticing shuttering at highway speeds after hitting bumps. I had the suspension checked when I went in for the second weld recall notice on my Jeep in 01/19, it was ok according to the dealership. 02/19 I experienced excessive vibration/shuttering of the frontend after hitting a bump at highway speeds. Did not stop until I slowed to about 40mph. Took to dealership, an upgraded steering dampener was placed on the vehicle. Shuttering continued. 10/19 shuttering gets worse. While driving about 55mph steering locks up on a curve two times, like the power steering dropped for a couple seconds then returned. Taken to the shop, dampener replaced again, cant duplicate lock up. I contacted Jeep cares and fca. 11/19 vehicle is taken to the shop again for 2 weeks. Shop acknowledges steering is looser than it should be. Steering gear is replaced. After getting vehicle back steering is tight but now wandering all over the place, cant keep Jeep in a straight line especially at high speed. 12/19 vehicle is taken back to shop alignment is performed. After a couple hundred miles I notice steering is loose and there is a dead spot in the steering again. I relay this to fca. 01/19 fca regional tech drives vehicle, says its driving as designed, checks alignment and adjusts caster. Problems with loose steering and deadspot persist. Jeeps degree of wandering depends on conditions seems even more difficult to operate on windy days than it was before steering gear change. Takes constant corrections to keep it going straight.

8 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2019

My brand new, 2018 Jeep has 768 miles on it and the steering is loose to say the least. If the front track bar bracket (solid front axle in line with the body of the vehicle) still has welds that are off seam, can cause the bracket to detach from the frame and can cause loose, vague steering to a complete system failure. Recall statement: "the separation of the front track bar bracket from the frame may cause a reduction in the steering response, which can cause a vehicle crash without prior warning," this is my third Jeep and 2nd Jeep Wrangler. The dealership states they repaired the recall, 2 months prior to the purchase date, but I do not believe they did. If the dealership claimed the repair to Jeep I am sure they pocketed the money. This is a huge safety risk as the steering is recalled as a safety recall - the dealership should be liable and Jeep needs to inspect that the recalls at the very least one and those that claim to do the repairs and do not - should have their ability to offer Jeep products revoked.

9 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 09/08/2019

Steering is loose, way to much play around center - about 4 inch - without response, car drifts.

10 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2019

Jeep jl Wrangler, steering loose and Jeep wanders at highway speed. Attention NHTSA: this is not a Jeep thing! people have been able to solve this! if solvable, then by definition not inherent to any platform! solves include a combination of new steering gear, new tension bolt that connects the steering wheel to the gear, and new track bar. Fca is getting away with substandard steering at the hand of its techs that state that this is just a Jeep thing when it is not! force a recall now or face blood on your hands! this is fixable! this is why we hired you to do this job! act now! this is your moment!.

11 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 06/04/2019

We own a 2018 Jeep Wrangler unlimited (4-door) rubicon, original owner, currently has 2625 miles on it. The vehicle wanders on all road surfaces. The steering is very loose and it is difficult to keep in in the lanes while in motion. This excessive play in the steering makes for a very uncomfortable to drive as you are constantly correcting the direction of the vehicle to keep it from going off the roadway or into another vehicle. This steering issue is very dangerous. I have taken it back to the dealer for repair and they have found nothing.

12 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 05/25/2019

Just bought a 2018 Wrangler jl leftover/ brand new off the lot. I immediately noticed that the steering is very loose and difficult to control. This is especially true in wind or if driving 55 miles per hour or more. My husband refuses to drive the car because he feels unsafe doing so. I get very nervous as well. I'm constantly having to adjust the wheel to stay on the road. The second issue is that sometimes when I set the cruise control it will just keep going past my designated speed I chose unless I turn it off. Lastly my car seems to not shift gears down. It throttles and revs. When I took it to be looked at I was told it's no big deal. Well it is! even my local mechanic said he feels that it's not switching properly between gears. I've waited 22 years to buy my first Wrangler and I paid $42000 for it. It should not do any of this! it's brand new. It's also a safety hazard. I could get into a major accident! I need help with these things please. Stand behind your product. This is my first Wrangler but my 4th Jeep. I also talked my mom and brother into buying new Jeeps the same week I did last month! my contact is 315-723-6849. Lisa addison wilson. I'd like call back so someone can help me. Thank you.

13 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 05/06/2019

While driving the steering is loose, the vehicle wanders and is difficult to maintain my lane at highway speeds. It has been to the dealer 5 times for this issue. They have completed the TSB concerning the issue and it has not repaired the problem. This needs to be investigated and repaired before someone is hurt or killed because of it. My vehicle is currently parked because my wife is afraid to drive it.

14 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 05/03/2019

Steering is loose and vehicle is difficult to drive straight. Vehicle wanders around the road and causes vehicle to sway into other lanes.

15 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 02/17/2019

While driving at approx 60-65mph, in 30 degree weather and on the highway, I was coming around a bend and the steering locked up. I could not turn my steering wheel and almost collided with a tractor trailer and was heading straight into the median. After pulling on the steering wheel and slowing down, the steering then loosend and my car swerved almost hitting the car in the next lane over. This has happened on 2 other separate occasions besides the one just explained. I'm very concerned over the safety of my family. The dealership couldn't duplicate the problem so no repair was done. This is a serious problem and needs to be addressed ASAP.

16 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2019

Model is a 2018 jk sport (2-door) with 3,400 miles. Upon a right turn into the entrance drive of an apartment complex and hitting a slight bump at the curb line, the car immediate loss steering control along with the traction control light illuminating on the dash and felt the vibration of the anti-lock brakes activating. Stopped immediately, check underneath, saw no damage. Continued slowly into the apartment complex, the steering was very loose taking many turns of the steering wheel to turn the front wheel of the car. Any time the steering wheel was turned right or left, the traction control light illuminated on the dash along with the vibration of the anti-lock brakes activating. With the loose steering and the traction control light / abs activating when turning the steering wheel, nothing else out of the ordinary detected, decided to drive slowly to the Jeep dealer. On the way to the dealer, on a straight away at about 25 mph got a violent shaking in the front of the vehicle, commonly known as the "death wobble". Arrive safely to the dealer keeping the speed real slow and the steering turns to a minimum. Inspection by the dealer reveled the front track bar bracket had completely detached from the frame on the way to the dealer. As seen in the uploaded photo, it is quite obvious that the bracket was improperly welded to the frame. This is exactly the same problem under safety recall ua5 / NHTSA 18v-675 for the jl model, but this jk model of the same year.

17 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 12/14/2018

Steering has play/dead area when driving. Road irregularities cause it to steer dramatically and suddenly (bump steer). Correcting the bump steer requires large steering wheel inputs (sawing of steering wheel). Road "s" turns magnifies dead area of steering when reversal of direction is steered. Higher speeds magnify the feeling that the steering is loose or not tightly connected. There is a notable time lag in a steering input. A family member that have drove it called it "squirrely" . My wife refuses to drive it. At highway speeds (50-70 mph), the front tires will shimmy if a bump is encountered on the interstate.

18 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 12/12/2018

Jeep Wrangler 2018 jl with 1010 miles and 5 weeks old. Steering is very loose when driving at any speed, but say at 60, I can move the steering wheel at least 2 inches from right to left before the steering responds. It takes constant corrections to keep the vehicle in your lane. We live in a mountainous area with narrow windy roads and many large trucks (logging trucks etc). Its extremely dangerous to drive these roads with the vehicle because your constantly correcting to stay in your lane. I've had it to the dealer, they've acknowledged the issue, but their telling me they drove another Jeep just like mine and it does the same thing so they don't know what to do. They and I are contacting Jeep. At this time I won't let me wife or kids drive the vehicle, and it's pretty much parked in the garage until this issue is resolved.

19 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 12/03/2018

Steering is loose and unresponsive ,Jeep wonders into lanes on highways, hard to keep straight, constant steering wheel input needed to maintain a straight line at highway speeds, after hitting some pumps at highway speeds the front wheels shake and the steering wheel occilates , in some case vilantly causeing temporarily lose in control of Jeep. Can turn steering wheel several inches in both directions without the wheels turning. Unknown as to what the problem is, I have been pulled over by police who thought I was a drunk driver due to not maintaining a straight line. Almost involved in an accident with my children in car, hit a bump at highway speed and the wheels shook and steering wheel occilated and could not maintain my lane, was pulled over by driver in other car as we thought we had struck but luckily not, my dealer has already replaced sevaral parts but they cannot fix problem. . . Still at dealer with no hope of being fixed.

20 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 11/28/2018

When driving at highway speeds steering seems loose and not very responsive. It takes a good deal of turn in the wheel for it to move the wheels a little. If you have to move quickly the wheel does not react. I feel it is unsafe because if you needed to get out of the way and move the wheel it does not respond, in my option the steering is too loose and does not have any resistance behind the wheel and is dangerous and could cause an accident.

21 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2018

Steering I loose and vehicle wanders constantly. On several occasions almost resulting in accidents. I currently have 2200 miles on the vehicle and this problem has occurred since day one. I have an appointment to have Jeep dealer check out but want to document this problem in case I have an accident prior to the dealer visit.

22 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 11/18/2018

I was driving straight at a speed of 65 miles per hour on a busy, main highway. Without warning, the Jeep went into a "death wobble" and was unable to be controlled. I was unable to steer the vehicle and I was forced to coast to a stop along the shoulder. Only upon bringing the car to a complete stop did the the violent shaking stop. I was unable to drive the car properly after that, as the steering was loose and not correctly controlled. I made it to a gas station while driving slowly and was towed to a dealership from there.

23 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2018

This Jeep wanders on the road. The steering feels loose. I constantly have to fight it to keep it in my lane. I have taken it to 2 dealers and they tell me that this is the way the new drive by wire steering is handling these days. I feel it is unsafe and it makes me want to sell my brand new Jeep.

24 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 10/31/2018

1. The steering wheel is loose and vehicle wanders off of the road at >45 mph speed. Unable to keep vehicle on traffic lane. 2. The vehicle stopped on city street while traveling at 22 mph speed. Check engine light on and the transmission locked. 3. Low battery voltage (12. 7v) reading while running and at stationary.

25 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2018

The first day I purchased the Jeep there was obvious steering wheel play as I drove home on the freeway. Three weeks later the steering is still loose and I am concerned that there will be a crash. At 70 miles per hour it is very noticeable that the steering system has too much play. It seems that there may be a screw(s) loose on the steering shaft or a problem in the steering gearbox itself. While driving you have to constantly correct the steering due to the vehicle wandering from lane-to-lane. The second problem occurred today as the drivers seat back fails to lock in place after getting items out of the back seat after leaving the grocery store. The seat back simply rocks back and forth as I accelerate and brake. The problem appears to be with the strap that allows the seat to be tilted. This strap at the base of the seat goes into the airbag housing for side impacts. This strap does not engage the mechanism to keep the seat in an upright position.

26 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 10/04/2018

Same issue as many others: loose steering especially at highway speeds, and dead spots off center. Requires constant correction to stay in lane, which at highway speeds and next to trucks can be terrifying. Former Wrangler jk owner, so I know it's not a "Jeep thing". Seen many reports of lose ball joints, weak track bar welds, and incorrect alignments, in addition to the new aluminum gearbox, as contributing to the issue. Jeep needs a comprehensive steering fix for the jl, and soon. I believe this issue started for builds around April and later, in response to reports steering for some was locking up. I believe Jeep went the other direction and simply made the steering loose instead of fixing the actual lockup issue. Jeep must come up with a true solution that results in no lock ups and tight, reliable, solid steering.

27 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2018

The steering is loose requiring me to constantly correct the path the vehicle is taking. There is inches of play in the steering wheel with no corresponding reaction. The dealer has no solution. This vehicle is a newly purchased 2018 Wrangler with approximately 1300 mile on the odometer. I do not want an accident because of this.

28 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2018

While the vehicle is in motion the steering is very loose. You can move the steering wheel left and right about 4 inches in play and the wheels never turn at all. This makes drifting, especially at high speeds, a huge safety risk. You must overcorrect the wheel in order to stay in your lane while driving. The caster nut and gear box nut seem to come from the factory extremely loose causing this potentially life threatening safety hazard.

29 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 10/03/2018

Jeep wanders all over the road like steering is loose - hard to keep going in a straight line. Felt it during test drive but thought it was "just a Jeep thing". After driving many miles and talking with others it appears it is not normal. Thousands of reports about it on various forums including car and driver magazine. Actually feels like Jeep is out of control at times. Scary. Dealer claims no issue since no TSB/recall and nothing they can do about it. This is a safety risk!.

30 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

The steering is very loose and vehicle wanders all over. Problem is especially bad at highway speeds and requires constant input to remain straight. Steering wheel has about 2 inches of dead space so corrections are cumbersome. Steering will lock up at highways speeds and then suddenly release. This has happened 5 times and caused me to skid 2x and go off highway one.

31 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

Steering is loose and vehicle wanders all over the road. Constant correction of the wheel is required to stay in lane. Most noticeable at highway speeds but is apparent at all speeds.

32 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 09/22/2018

Since the day that I drove my 2018 Jeep Wrangler unlimited rubicon off of the lot, the steering has been loose where you can move the steering wheel 1 1/2 inches both ways and it does nothing. The vehicle exhibits excessive drifting and a significant dead-spot in the center. I have visited the dealership 3 times for this issue with the service advisor and he finally showed me a document that they are aware of the issue. I have only 500 miles on the truck because we are scared to drive it and hurt ourselves or someone else.

33 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 09/01/2018

Steering is loose and 1 inch movements of the steering wheel in either direction yield no steering effect at all. Car wanders in left and right and the "dead" zone in the steering wheel make it difficult to control. Other drivers must think I am driving drunk. Not safe or comfortable.

34 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 08/22/2018

While driving on the highway with my wife at 60mph the steering got loose to the point where the car was losing control I needed to pull off the highway. The 2018 wrangker jk has a new steering system design that creates a dangerously loose and oversteer condition that will increase rollovers at high speeds we would like to formally document the steering on the jl is flawed, dangerous, and designed at a level of looseness where the drivers control of the vehicle is dramatically impaired. This vehicle should be recalled and or the electronic software package should be redesigned. With this email I am notifying fca that they have a material safety hazard on this product. The excessive play in steering risks oversteer at low speeds and increased rollover % probability at 55 mph and higher this is not acceptable. The change in tires makes no difference in performance. This is documenting complaint number 2 from the cushman family. Please do not allow families with children to drive this vehicle without a warning or the teen age demographic that loves to drive Wranglers. 35 Steering Is Loose problem

Failure Date: 08/10/2018
