My car started making a slight knocking sound on the morning of 1/21/21 on kemp blvd which is just a city street and within less than a mile, it stopped running and had me on the side of the road for about 15 minutes. I was only about 2 streets from my house, I got it to start and got it back home but then immediately turned it off and it has been parked there since. I had a mechanic look at it and was notified that it was failure of the rod bearing and that I would need a new engine.
Car started vibrating and making a knocking noise coming from the engine while beginning drive on the highway. The knocking got worse and the engine stalled shortly afterwards. Pulled over on highway shoulder and smelled burnt oil after car stopped. Checked oil levels and temperature were within acceptable ranges. Engine appeared to be siezed after attempting to turn on the vehicle again. Car had to be towed away from highway.
There is a loud knocking noise when placed in gear, the knock is not heard while in park. Because no sensor has gone off, the repair tech said there is nothing he can do. I do have a the motor that was recalled, and it was replaced.
I had been home from work for about an hour, got in my car to go run some errands, started it, and it had a knocking noise coming from the engine. I immediately shut it off and had it towed to the dealership the next day.
While driving my car at an average speed, the car suddenly started to jerk and would not accelerate, then next thing I know I heard a knocking noise in the engine.
While driving on the turnpike the car completely shut off. Prior to shutting off, the battery, oil and transmission icon appeared on the dashboard. Thankfully I was able to merge over into the side lane safely because the breaks along with the steering suddenly became difficult to control. After placing the car into park and removing the keys from the ignition, I attempted to restart it. It started, so I continued heading home. Approximately driving another 12 miles, the same thing happened again. The only difference this time was upon restarting it, a weird knocking noise came from underneath the hood, so I shut the car off. I waited about 5 minutes to restart it and it started right up, so I continued heading home. Today, once again while driving, the car shut off. Same knocking, and dashboard lights. After waiting about 5 minutes, I restarted it, only to continuously hear a loud knocking noise and a vibration coming from under the hood. While accelerating, it barely moved and the noises became louder along with the vibration. This time the car was incapable of being driven. I had to get it towed directly to a kia dealership. Good thing my car was still covered with easy care or else I wouldn't have been to get it towed. I don't even know how I am going to be able to afford whatever needs repaired. I did receive a recall notice and will attach it below.

Engine started making a knocking noise -.
I was on my way home from work when I heard a faint knocking sound coming from the engine. Less than ten minutes later, while going 60 mph on the freeway, I lost all power to the wheels and had to pull over to the shoulder. The engine knock was much louder now and the car wouldn't budge. I'm guessing this is similar to the issues which caused recall sc147, but to my knowledge the hybrid ex doesn't have a gdi engine. With only 113k miles, I'm hoping kia will cover it.
Car was purchased08/2018 and on 3/06/2020 the check engine light came on due to low oil pressure. The car had a routine oil change in 1/31/20. After having the car checked locally it was determined the oil was low due to the camshaft needed to be replaced. Upon further inspection(dougs auto 28387) the technician observed metal shaving which contaminated the remaining oil inside the vehicle. The engine makes a loud knocking noise and the vehicle is practically no longer driveable due yo fear of the engine seizing completely which can result in injury, crash, or death. Kia is aware of the recall however states my vehicle isnt impacted however everything we have experienced is outlined in the recall statement. Kia has declined to help further according to previous complaints filed with the same issues.

My 2013 kia Optima hybrid began suddenly having a knocking noise in the motor. Had it towed to kia and was told it had the exact same issue that the 2013 Optima were having that were covered by a recall except mine was a hybrid and the recall had not included hybrids.
One week after an oil change, I was (30 miles away from home) driving on a highway at a speed of approximately 55mph. I felt a vibration begin. I turned off the heater and turned off the stereo. Immediately I heard a horrific metallic banging noise coming from the engine area. There were no warning lights or cel illuminated. The engine stalled as I was traveling down the highway and I had to try to pull it safely to the edge of the road. I was about 20 feet away from the entrance to a business, so I tried to start the car to get it safely off the roadway. It tried to start, but made an extremely loud "ka-thunk" sound and then started smoking from under the hood. I turned off the flashers, called for a tow truck and a ride home. I had the vehicle towed to an independent mechanic near my home and called for a ride for myself. Once I arrived home, I called kia consumer affairs and reported the incident. They provided a case number and stated that I would now need my car to be towed to a kia dealer for diagnosis. The kia dealer does not currently have a loaner vehicles, so I am waiting until Monday to have my car towed in hopes I can acquire a vehicle at that time until they are able to determine if kia is going to replace the engine. In the interim, my independent mechanic did a quick inspection and stated there are metal shavings in my oil and it appears as though my engine "blew a rod. " my VIN doesn't meet the recall criteria, but rather the pi1803 bulletin. 2013 kia Optima sxl; I'm the second owner. It's been babied, appropriate oil changes, 93k miles.
I was driving on the highway when I started hearing a knocking sound coming from the engine. It got really loud, lost power and low voltage warning popped up. Pulled over and the knocking got louder. While shifting lanes with no power I almost got in several accidents. Got to the shoulder and knocking got worse. As I was on the shoulder with hazards on the whole car died out including hazards. Was out until 1130pm with no hazards waiting for a tow. Got it to koa the next day and they said engine was seized, they want me to pay $1300 just to take the engine apart to see what part is damaged. On top of that they said it would be $7000-9000 for new engine. They need to recall these hybrid engines.
I was leaving work and my car wouldn't crank, I thought it was my starter so I replaced the starter only to hear loud knocking noise coming from the engine. I was concerned with the work from firestone so I took my car. While driving the car on a busy intersection my car, a 2013 kia Optima just shut off completely after the starter was replaced. I initially thought it happened during the replacement of the starter but an adjuster came out and ruled the starter was brand new and had nothing to do with the engine. As I continue to read online reviews I see it can be a problem with the engines on kia. I have a loud knocking noise coming from the engine with metal flakes in the oil.
I was driving my car on the highway in rush hour traffic on 11/15/19 and had just accelerated up to about 60 mph when the car completely lost power in the middle of traffic. I was able to steer the vehicle to the side of the road without power steering or brakes because the engine had completely shut off. Once I got to the side of the road, I tried several times to start the car up again and the engine wouldn't do anything at all. The battery wasn't dead and I had plenty of fuel in the vehicle. I had my car towed to a kia dealership/service center. I searched my VIN # on this database and that's when I saw that a recall has been out since 2017 for my year/make/model, and the recall is for this exact problem with the engine. I didn't purchase the car until 2018 from a Hyundai dealership who did not mention or address the known issue/recall. Per the recall info, there is a known issue with the bearings due to a machining/manufacturing issue when the car was built. The engine light never came on and I did not notice a knocking sound prior to this engine failure. I am currently waiting to hear about what is going on with my car and when/if kia is going to fix the recall issue, and I am being charged for the diagnostics. The NHTSA recall # is 17v224, manufacturer recall # is sc147.
Tl-the contact owns a 2013 kia Optima. The contact stated that while exiting the highway and passing another vehicle all of the power was lost to the vehicle. The contact was able to turn into a parking lot. The whole dashboard was illuminated and the contact tried to restart the vehicle but smelled a burning smell. The contact quickly evacuated the vehicle along with her disabled daughter. There were no immediate flames showing from the vehicle. A tow truck driver came and noticed the burning smell but was able to tow the vehicle to the dealer dutch miller kia of charleston, wv 335 maccorkle Ave sw, charleston, wv 25303 (855) 739-5369. The vehicle was towed to the dealer last night. The dealer called the contact this morning and she gave them the past history of repairs. The vehicle had been in for a past recall repair for the engine several times . Back in may 2019 the contact called the manufacturer since she was concerned about a knocking noise that was getting louder and louder. The manufacturer directed the dealer to put a device to quite the knocking noise. The device would enable the vehicle to be driven at 35 mph should the engine malfunction for an unknown distance. The failure mileage wads 116,000. Tf.
I own a 2013 kia Optima my car wouldn't start. Then after a few tries it started up. Then it did it again. My car wouldn't start. My car would stall out. Then it started making a knocking noise in the engine. The next day the check engine light went on. My odometer just hit over 100,000 a few weeks before. I made an appt at a kia dealership service dept but it's not until next week. I've only had this car for 3 months. I just purchased it. Now I've learned about the kia recall sc147 & NHTSA recall 17v224000 on bearings that lead to engine seizure & that can lead to metal in the oil. And it causes a knocking noise. I am positive this is what's wrong with my car. I hope the kia dealership will fix my car next week that's the earliest appointment they have. I hope I can get a car loaner.
The motor in my 2013 kia Optima spun a rod bearing on the way to a out of town softball tournament for my daughter the weekend of June 28th thru June 30 2019. My family and I were about 40 miles away from home on the highway when the vehicle started to lose power. We stopped to check the car to see what could be the problem and that's when I heard a knocking noise coming from the motor. At that point I had no choice but to have it towed to a mechanic shop in another city and star where the car still is today. The vehicle has not been started spence the day of break down. (June 28th 2019)the mechanic recommended me to see if there was a recall on the vehicle for this problem and with your VIN lookup tool I was able to find out that the motor does have a recall on it for this very reason. (oil passages may be block due to debris from manufacturer cleaning defect. Causing premature rod bearing wear from not cleaning engine properly before engine assembly). . I never received notice in the mail about a recall on my vehicle nor do I have recall number. The mechanic is willing to fix the entire problem for us but I need to know if I should allow him and will receive reimbursement after paid repairs or would you like me to have it towed to a kia authorized dealer for repairs. Thank you for your help.
The cars engine light has been on for over a year. The engine is constantly burning oil even though oil changes are done every 2000 to 3000 miles. The vehicle engine sounds louder every month. The car passed two recall tests at a kia dealership, one for which I paid out of pocket. I was told the engine is burning oil by my mechinic and there should be a recall on my car. The kia dealership cannot explain to me why my car is passing the recall even though it's obvious the car has had an engine problem since I bought it. There is a distinctive knocking sound coming from the engine and you can hear the engine hiccup while the car is turned on, as if were about to brake down.
My car engine shut down after making a left turn, which I almost got rear ended by traffic turning right from a faster street. I had to place the car in park to restart the engine after a couple tries. I noticed my engine light and other lights on dash turned red. After a couple tries the engine started and I seen my oil light also so I thought maybe my oil was bad so I went and had an oil change done and after getting that completed was driving home and my engine has this knocking noise now and it seemed to get worse. The technician stated that the engine light showed that the overhead cam sensor was the cause of the light. But after changing the oil the light went out. Technician stated the car was a quart low before the oil was changed out. I do not understand why this happened because I used the best oil and changed my oil on a regular basis and have records to show if needed.

I just recently had my local dealer due my routine oil change on my 2013 kia Optima ex. About two weeks from when this was done. I started to notice some sluggish in my engine performance and then after hearing a low knocking sound from the engine. I decided to check the engine oil level to see if I was low due to a past experience with a car having a bad valve cover gasket. So, when I checked my oil level on the dipstick it was between the low and full line. Thinking that this was just maybe due to the possibility that the dealer had not put enough oil in during the oil change. I just bought two quarts of 5w20 engine oil to bring the oil back to the full line on the dipstick and not visually seeing any signs of oil leaking anywhere. However, just one week from when I added the two quarts of oil. I started to hear the knocking sound again and to find out that I am down 1 quart of oil. I decided then to park my car under a piece of cardboard for a day and do a thorough look for any signs of oil leaking in the engine but, I did not come across any oil leaking anywhere. I decided then to do some research on the internet to see if other kia owners were having this issue and found that many other kia owners with this gdi motor are having this same issue with some owners have the motor seize due to the engine oil being lost in the engine by defective connecting rods that fail in the engine. I have even found out that Hyundai has a recall on this same engine that is being used in my 2013 kia Optima. My concern now is that if kia ends up acknowledging this eventually as a recall that the warranty will be more than 10 years or 120, 000 miles as with my highway travel commute daily to work I am over this mileage. I will be making an appointment with the kia dealer tomorrow to see what they will be able to do and what it might cost before I lose my engine.
After purchasing the vehicle brand new we noticed a problem with the steering. When you turned the steering wheel while stopped you would get a loud knocking noise. The power steering rack was replaced twice already and the vehicle just now has 43,000 miles. Our biggest concern has been an engine knocking noise that started to occur at just over 35,000 miles when you start vehicle. We had brought our vehicle to libertyville kia in libertyville, IL for our problem and they said they could not duplicate what we are hearing. The service manager verbally told me to wait for it to get worse that it is hard to get kia to cover this known engine problem. After reaching out to kia with this engine problem and getting no help except them blaming us for lack of oil changes and maintenance. Which was absurd when we only took the vehicle to kia for service since purchasing new. Filed a formal complaint with illinois attorney generals office lisa madigan to get help with this and kia has botched their records and still sdays we have not maintained the vehicle properly. Buyers of kia and Hyundai I strongly urge to think again. I hope everyone that has had problems like this get the honest help they deserve.
Had oil change 5 days prior, and recall for acceleration. Called the, dealership because I heard a knocking noise in the front end. Was on my way to dealership on the, expressway, car lost power, put it in neutral and pulled to right side of xway. . Car filled with smoke and fully engulfed in flames. Waiting to hear if insurance is looking into faulty work with recall or oil change.
