36 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/09/2021

My car is stalling when I accelerate and when I turn my car on to start it up it smells like gas.

37 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/16/2020

I was coming of the freeway when all of a sudden my car just turned itself off. Luckily I was able to manage to pull over to the side quickly enough to avoid any collision. I tried to change the starter because I was told that was bad. It hasn't been able to start up again since it first stopped on me.

38 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/27/2020

Car has a bad gas fume smell that comes through the vent when driving check engine light came on motor has a loud tapping noise and burns gas quick.

39 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2020

Car smelled like gas when air was on and even with air off. Fixed March 2019 and I believe I see a recall for it now. We paid a pretty penny to get fixed. My paint on my car is coming off everywhere like bad nail polish. It is peeling off and continues to happen in new parts of the car. I'm trying to get this fixed now with kia. This started happening around windshield first about a year and half ago and then the trunk last fall and now my door and other areas in the last few months.

40 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/31/2020

While driving on a road with my little cousin. All my function lights came on and and my car began to stall and slow down so started to press on the gas for acceleration a block down the way we started smelling smoke I panicked trying to get over and ran up on the curve and came off it pulled to a safe spot and me and my cousin both exit the vehicle quickly when we got out my it was smoking really bad my cousin noticed that it was on fire underneath the car so I looked and it was on fire something fell to the ground on fire underneath the car.

41 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 08/24/2020

I went to start my car which was on August 24, 2020 and it was making a very very loud noise I couldn't move it so I had it towed over to a mechanic who discovered that the engine in fact has been blown are the block has been blown so the engine is no good and needs to be replaced I am way and there was no warning on my vehicle and with also no notification of oil was low or no oil in my car whatsoever there was a metal shavings in the oil pan the mechanic discovered and it there's no leaks in the car at all and so now I pay payments for a car and somebody else to take me around to work every day for months on months andpayments for a car that sits in my driveway broken down and the dealership here kia will not they fix my car they refuse to because of a disagreement prior to this I am on anything about my car they will not do I am actually the one who discovered there was a recall in the vehicle since February and nobody has told me and everybody has failed to mention this or contact me.

42 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/23/2020

While driving on the turnpike the car completely shut off. Prior to shutting off, the battery, oil and transmission icon appeared on the dashboard. Thankfully I was able to merge over into the side lane safely because the breaks along with the steering suddenly became difficult to control. After placing the car into park and removing the keys from the ignition, I attempted to restart it. It started, so I continued heading home. Approximately driving another 12 miles, the same thing happened again. The only difference this time was upon restarting it, a weird knocking noise came from underneath the hood, so I shut the car off. I waited about 5 minutes to restart it and it started right up, so I continued heading home. Today, once again while driving, the car shut off. Same knocking, and dashboard lights. After waiting about 5 minutes, I restarted it, only to continuously hear a loud knocking noise and a vibration coming from under the hood. While accelerating, it barely moved and the noises became louder along with the vibration. This time the car was incapable of being driven. I had to get it towed directly to a kia dealership. Good thing my car was still covered with easy care or else I wouldn't have been to get it towed. I don't even know how I am going to be able to afford whatever needs repaired. I did receive a recall notice and will attach it below.

43 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/21/2020

We went to start the vehicle and it sputtered and failed to start. Once it finally did it was "jumpy" and there was a lot of blackish smoke from the exhaust. The vehicle then had a check engine light come on so we got that tested at an automotive store with an error code of " p0087 fuel rail/system pressure- too low" I see multiple articles discussing recalls for this year and model, however when we called kia they said there was no recall for our specific vehicle for this issue. We are now going to have it repaired and pay out of pocket. . I feel this is unsafe, and needs to be addressed as this could have caused a fire having gasoline leak out. As well now we are going to be out of pocket paying a little over $1,000.

44 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2020

Tl the contact owns a 2013 kia Optima. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 20v100000 (fuel system, gasoline) however, the parts to do the recall repair was not yet available. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. Neither the dealer nor the manufacturer were made aware of the issue. The contact had not experienced a failure. VIN tool confirms parts not available.

45 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/06/2020

In the late morning of Monday, April 6th 2020, my husband was driving our 2013 kia Optima sxl home from the store when the car began filling with smoke. Luckily, he was able to pull the car over and jump out before flames began to engulf the front of the car. He called 911 and the fire company was dispatched. Their response time was short, but it took under a minute for the car to go up in flames (see pictures attached). There was zero warning that this horrific event was about to occur. No engine light, no funny noises, no problems whatsoever. In fact, I had just brought the car into our local dealership for routine service less than a month before on March 9. They gave me no indication that there was anything wrong with the car that would cause it to catch on fire. We filed a claim with our insurance company, who confirmed the car was totaled and listed a recent, but as yet unannounced, recall on my exact year, make and model of the car. After some research, I found that according to a February 27, 2020 article in us news and world report, kia would shortly be recalling nearly 142,000 2013 and 2014 kia Optimas. Furthermore, kia says a fuel hose can deteriorate and crack due to engine heat. The hoses can leak and cause fires. A fix is still being developed. The recall is expected to start April 16. although at the time of the article no fires had yet been reported, given the sudden nature of our car fire, it is obvious to us what has happened.

46 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/02/2020

The engine blew up on car was driving normally when car stopped and didnt want to power on. Engine started making noises. Went to dealer to have engine replaced but wont make it valid since they mention engine is not the original engine and was replaced.

47 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/14/2020

On February 14, 2020 I was driving down the highway from an appointment and noticed that my gas light was flashing and the gauge was way below empty. I had just stopped prior to my appointment and put gas in it. So, I stopped and put more in it. Still didn't move the gauge one bit. I stopped at advance auto and ask for a code reading and it came back as obd-ii code p0463 high pressure fuel sensor. Called kia dealership and ask if it had anything to do with the recent recalls I had brought in for my Optima 2013. And they didn't think or know until I nbring it in for diagnostic testing. At which point would be$118 an hour. Somewhere I seen kia will be having a recall on kia Optima 2011-2014 put for low pressure fuel pipe. .

48 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2020

I have recently been experiencing some acceleration issues with my 2013 kia Optima 4cyl 2. 4l FL. About a two and a half months ago, I was driving on the freeway and switched lanes to pass a car; as I began accelerating my car felt like someone just pulled the plug on it. I lost most of my ability to accelerate and it felt like not enough fuel was getting supplied to the engine. My check engine light came on immediately. The next day I took it to o'reilly to check the code on my car and it came back with p0087, which is related to low fuel pressure. Looking into it further on NHTSA. Gov, I found communications about this year, make, and model that state that there is a possible issue with the low pressure fuel line and how it may develop cracks or leaks due to excessive heat in the engine. This can increase the risk of a fire starting in the engine. I also found that kia was going to begin notifying affected customers beginning on April 16th, 2020. I have waited this out to see if I would get a recall notice, but being 11 days later, I still have not received anything. I firmly believe that the issue I am experiencing is directly related to this issue with the fuel line. My car starts rough, runs rough, and has very poor acceleration; especially at higher rpms. It feels as if my car chugs at times. I have dealt with recall issues before with my vehicle (a complete engine block replacement due to excess metal shavings left in the engine during manufacturing) and my car died on the freeway. It was a nightmare to even get the dealer to admit that there was an issue and required my car dying a second time on the freeway and a tow that I had to pay for to get them to do anything. In short, I do not want to have to go through that mess again to fix, what so far appears to be (or will be), a recall that I should have been notified about. Thank you.

49 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/01/2019

While in motion on city street, vehicle shut down. Tried to restart vehicle, all lights would blink and engine sounded like it sputtered but did not turn on.

50 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2019

I noticed when I am at a red light and I take off to go, the car misfires and stalls for a minute. I then noticed my car was not giving the acceleration and kept stalling, and a service engine soon light came on with a code p0087 which has to do with the fuel pressure. I feel this could be a concern as my car could stall while I'm driving which would make it dangerous as it could stall while im on the interstate or while I'm going through a light.

51 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/28/2019

I was driving to work-freeway 65 when check engine light and oil light came on. The car dropped power and I could have had serious injuries to myself and others. I contacted kia and they had it towed to dealer-dealer and kia 800# give you the run around-they said there engineers told them we need to do oil comsumption test and told me to pick up this dangerous car and drive it. I have made numerous calls to kia and they never call back- I even asked the service manager if he has driven my car and he said no. This is not taking care of your consumers/customers to even ask me to place my life in danger to keep driving this car-they are well aware of fires and the seriousness of driving this car and putting others in danger-my car has sat at kia -independence, mo for 2 1/2 weeks and I also received no recall notice ever. My car had 5 recalls at the time it was towed the most serious recall is sc147 NHTSA 17v224 my car had 65,000 miles . There is no way I will drive that car until kia resolves the issues, I also had large amount of white smoke- coming from tail pipe-dealer said car burning oil don,t know where, well that isn. T so true. Dealer aid motor needs replaced but it is out of there hands because engineers said oil test needs done. Drive it come in every week so they can see how much oil it burns-I am glad they think our time isn. T important or our safety-this is there mistakes and they need to resolve it.

52 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/05/2019

Intermittent stalling of vehicle upon slowing/stopping at redlights/stop signs in which engine begins losing power/gas either stalls as if it's trying to quit or car stalls & quits. This has happened numerous times, nearly causing accidents & increasing in frequency. I have noticed my motor knocking louder & upon visual exam, the entire motor is shaking which can be felt while driving but most noticeable causing car to shake when at an idol. Most recent, I've began to smell a very strong odor of gasoline upon starting the car but worsens upon accelerating. The car is running rich, and smell of gasoline is so strong, we have to roll down windows. The fumes are more prominent towards rear of car close to exhaust. I cannot see any leakage of fuel when looking however I am losing fuel somewhere because my gas mileage has greatly gotten worse & burning through it at a fast pace. I took it to kia dealership in salisbury nc today in which they upgraded computer software related to recall on 2. 4l gdi engine as I have a 2013 kia Optima. Mechanic states the engine test did pass but feels it will need to be replaced at some point?? mechanic said he didn't smell any gasoline but he did not test drive the car or run diagnostic test as he said I would have to pay the $129 fee. . . . . . I declined paying the fee and requested it be done as this is a well known problem but that was denied. I need this addressed and repaired. It is dangerous, costing me more money for gas & affecting my job. Please advise. . . . . . . This is not acceptable and should not place financial or safety burdens on owners as we already pay enough financing as well as regular/normal wear & tear expenses!! I'm still making payments on mine but becoming too difficult & dangerous to drive esp getting to work so I can support my family!!.

53 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 10/01/2019

Kia issued a recall for the engine burning cylinders causing foreign objects to get into the oil cycle, and causing the car to stall out. So my wife was driving the car along the highway going 70mph and the car completely stalled out and could've resulted in a serious wreck, and if it would've they would have been sued. So my car won't run now, and I get it towed to the dealership after I see this recall about the engine. The dealership test the engine and tell me the engine is fine, but my turbo is actually burning metal and causing foreign objects to get into my oil cycle. Since it's not the engine they are refusing to fix it. The same exact thing the recall is calling for is what is going on in my car but in a different part. They are refusing to go it and want me to pay over $2,500 to have it fixed when it's a serious malfunction on their part. If my wife would've wrecked I'm sure they would be begging to fix it so they didn't get sued! this is not right what is going on, and I'm very unhappy. If it was a consumer problem it would be no big deal but there is a recall going on that is happening to my vehicle that they are refusing to fix because they say the engine test out fine! well the foreign object is still getting into my oil cycle and could've lead to a serious wreck!.

54 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/20/2019

While on the freeway the vehicle froze up and locked. We smelt a strong burn odor. Mechanic checked fuses and we thought it was wiring or possibly the motor but turns out the starter went bad. The burn smell came from the coil wire on the starter.

55 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/15/2019

Waiting on a red light, the kia Optima stalled and then smoke started coming into the cabin. Within seconds the front of the car caught fire and my wife and two children had a very limited time to get out from the burning car into safety. The burning car was eventually extinguished by the fire department. Local police cordoned off the lane to provide safety for my family and others motorists on the road. The weather was clear and the time of the fire was around 12:30pm.

56 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/09/2019

Gas got into my engine. Car keep losing oil. Seemed to affect a lot of other areas.

57 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 03/06/2019

I was driving around 45 miles and hybrid system warning, safely stop and do not drive. This happened about 3 more times on the way to the dealership. Brought it to the dealer told me to replace the battery. The sign came back up after about 30 minutes of driving.

58 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 12/20/2018

When driving my vehicle I can smell gas fumes inside of the car. This started on the latter part of last year. I contacted my the center that services my car. Took it in for service asked them to check for the smell. I was told that they didn't smell anything. I was told that I would have to pay to have a diagnostic fee the have it checked. I have scheduled to have my car serviced on June 18 and I will be paying to have it run them. Curious if this has been a problem. I have become very insecure in driving my car. What else can I do in this case?.

59 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 11/22/2018

Car has not wanted to start 5 times. First started in November 2018. While driving on the highway, is has completely shut down twice in the middle of traffic and would not start. Once mid December & early January. Battery discharge warning came on so I got a new battery but still continued to have the same problem. At random times it acts as if it does not want to accelerate and stalls.

60 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/25/2018

Tl the contact owns a 2013 kia Optima. The contact received a recall notice for NHTSA campaign number: 18v907000 (fuel system, gasoline, engine). The contact stated that there was a fuel odor inside the vehicle. The contact took the vehicle to southside kia (9401 atlantic blvd, jacksonville, FL 32225, (904) 406-7779) three times to be repaired. The manufacturer was not notified. The failure mileage was 7,000.

61 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 09/07/2018

2013 kia Optima sx. Car loses power while on the road, engine warning light comes on. Car can't be driven past 20 mph or so no matter accelerator position. Car has been taken to dealer sevral times and a cause still unknown. Dealership changed engine cable harness and reset comuter (apparently settings were scrambled) and car then is functional. Last time, car lost power in highway and almost got rear-ended. Dangerous.

62 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/09/2018

I have been having repeated issues following the kia theta ii engine recall replacement (sc147) since June 2018. My car is practically new with 53k +/- miles, purchased new, and had all the recommended and required maintenance performed. I took my car to rick case kia (dealer code:ga083) to have my engine replaced midsummer 2018. Since then I have been experiencing persistent check engine light (cel) issues for the same engine diagnostic code(p2191). Each time I take my car to the dealer for resolution, technicians give me different reasons for what they "think" could be the root issue. Thus far, I have been told the issue was due to bad gas, an O2 sensor gone bad, a leak, history code from another dealer not clearing the recall, and now a fuel kit will be replaced. It is my assumption that if kia technicians truly knew what the issue was I would not have so many repeated trips for the same issue. To this date(December 14th 2018) they still have not provided a clear resolution. In light of recent events surrounding kia vehicles, specifically Optima, catching on fire and engines randomly blowing up this is something that needs an immediate resolution. It impacts my safety as the vehicle owner and those driving around me. I have expressed how uncomfortable I am driving this car in the current state (with the engine light on) and my concerns are being dismissed. I am told that it is not a drivability issue and I can drive it away with the light on. It should be no surprise why that is not a comforting diagnosis as I have been back about 6-7 times now. I am currently making attempts to engage/escalate this with the kia corporate office. In an attempt to be proactive I am seeking help!.

63 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/16/2018

Car losses power suddenly and lurches. This has happend when car is cruising at highway speeds or when started, stationary. Once that happens car may have to be restarted to work again. Sometimes that works, sometimes it does not. When it persists for a while, maximum speed is about 5 mph if started from a stop. Engine warning light comes on and the code p2118 (throttle actuator motor current range) is shown by an obd. The problem has ocurred before. Dealer initially changed throttle but problem recurred. The issue was eventually tracked to a faulty engine cable harness. The whole engine harness had to be replaced. However, problem is ocurring again a year later.

64 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 04/23/2018

Evaporative gas fumes inside and smells like something is burning.

65 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 06/05/2017

Wife and baby use this vehicle. When making a right turn from a stop, vehicle begins to slow and almost stall. Have had to pull into bike lanes quickly in order not to be hit from behind. There are 2 occasions when this occurs. 1) when at a stop on a city street, waiting to make a right. Foot off pedal, accelerate, engine begins to stall. 2) when rolling into a right turn (on city streets) acceleration causes start of stall process. We have not fully stalled as of yet. But this could be a bad scenario if it does. We have thought about gas vapor issues with the phoenix, az heat being 119 degrees, but if that were the case, it would happen other times and not just during turns. Thanks.

66 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 05/30/2017

The contact owns a 2013 kia Optima. While driving 10 mph, the engine stalled and the check engine indicator illuminated. The vehicle was towed to the kia dealer (fred anderson kia of raleigh; 9209 glenwood Ave, raleigh, nc 27617; (919) 785-4500) where it was diagnosed that the battery, the fuel kit, and the filter needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was taken to another kia dealer (chris leith pre-owned superstore; 11000 capital blvd, wake forest, nc 27587; (888) 482-1325) where it was diagnosed that the control valve needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The vehicle was still with the kia dealer. The manufacturer was contacted at 800-333-4542 and stated that they would get back within 2 or 3 business days. The contact stated that the manufacturer did not call back. The contact also stated that they were not willing to provide a loaner vehicle. Case number: 12360215 was provided. The failure mileage was 80,000.

69 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2016

Tl-the contact owns a 2013 kia Optima sx 4cyl auto. Contact stated that while driving at various speeds without warning there a abnormal noise (grinding). The vehicle was taken to the dealer cable dahmer of kansas city 555 w 103rd st, kansas city, mo 64114 (816) 284-7240 where it was visually look at with a stethoscope and traced the sound to the transmission be faulty. The vehicle was repaired. However, the failure recurred. At this time the vehicle was seen at a independent mechanic who diagnoses the vehicle and determined that the turbo oil feeder line was leaking and fractured and needed to be repaired. The contact mentioned NHTSA campaign number: 20v100000 (fuel system, gasoline) as a possible solution to the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000. Ck.

70 Other Fuel System problem

Failure Date: 02/04/2016

The anti-lock braking system failed on this car. If you would hit a bump in the road while acceleration the car would detect a spinning condition and cause major deceleration being very dangerous when entering a freeway in moderate traffic taking the vehicle from 60+ mph to virtually 40 mph with no warning and no brake lighting to warn approaching traffic. After many visits to kia dealer remained unaddressed until contacting corporate kia and finding a posting on kia Optima forum with another user that had same issue and was finally resolved with some hydraulic part replacement that costs $1,600 and was being avoided by dealers. When I brought this to kia corporates attention they agreed to replace with that part which did almost resolve that issue except on rare instances car will still hesitate when encountering a bump on acceleration. After that repair however the anti-lock brakes are now failing with erratic pulsing on hard braking and less effective braking.
