Seat belts, car seat retaining hooks, ecm, and distributor are recalled. Cheyenne kia had 3 weeks before original appointment to get the parts. I delivered the car for repairs only to get a call 4 hours later that they cannot find the parts. It has now been 6 weeks since picking up my car and they cannot find the parts to do the recall repairs. All I have been able to do is leave a message with jennifer xt 45960 at 800 333 4542 case # k3094095 kia customer care to find out when I can safely put my kids in the backseat of the car.

We were involved in an accident where we rear ended another vehicle. The other car was at a standstill and we hit them at about 30 mphs. The driver and myself both had seat belts. The driver injuries her left knee. The airbags did not deploy. I think that if they did her knee might not have been injured because she would not have slid forward upon impact. .

I just got my car fixed on mon. 8/25/14. I took it in because it was idling rough. The shop put in new spark plugs and wires. It cost me $180. I drove it home. It was smooth. Then I drove to downtown akron, about 15 miles, to a hike. When I was almost there, my car just went dead while I was driving. I pulled over and parked off the busy road onto a parking lot (part of/by akron university). The car was dead. It made a clicking noise when I tried to start it. I called aaa and they didn't know what was wrong (it had a brand new 6 year battery in it). They towed me back to the shop that had worked on it earlier that day - 15 miles. The next day, 8/26/14, the shop told me the timing belt broke and it ruined the engine. They said kia's have an interference motor. When the belt breaks, it breaks off all the pistons (something like that) and ruins the motor. It can't be fixed. I have to buy a new motor $2000 apprx, or a new car. I live alone and don't have the money for either. I was counting on this car to last me 2-3 more years. A couple of different garages told me it looked good and should last that long at least. I was going to start saving for a new car. This is very unethical of kia. They should not be allowed to make/sell a car that has a motor that self-destructs. I've had other cars and the timing belt broke, but it did not ruin the motor. They just replaced the timing belt. This is horrible! I had no idea, no warning! all the shop I took it to never said a thing! kia should not be allowed to do this. They should at least have to warn you about it! I have a manual and I never saw anything about it in there. My chevy manual had the miles and what you need to do at those miles. The kia book does not. I had no idea!! this should be illegal! total rip off!.

Kia Rio5 lx 2013 started to make rattling / pinging noise in the engine at 70000 miles. I took it to the dealership was told they can't hear it. The noise started to get louder at 89000 miles brought it back to dealership and the technician said it's because of excessive carbon. Then was told to do decarb, replace serpentine belt, fuel tank filter & spark plugs and the pinging would go away. The pinging was still there but not as bad around 94000 miles brought it back for pinging had the technician ride with me and he agreed it was pinging all the time now. They did another decarb system on it and told me that its normal the car is going to ping and I should run 91 octane every 4th tank of gas. At 96000 miles check engine light comes on and it's knock sensor code they had to call north America kia & korea of kia looking for answer to see what the problem is with my car. My kia was at dch kia of temecula for 7 days and they still couldn't give answer why or what was wrong with my car. They just said it was one of those issue that everyone was scratching there heads at. They used a top engine cleaner and the knock sensor code has been stable for now but the pinging is still there. They just keep telling me I drive to much & to use chevron techron fuel additive plus every 4th tank use 91 octane. I call kia consumer affairs and was told my case is getting passed on to one of there analyze. Finally the analyze called me I asked him if he had my paper work he said no he didn't need it he talked to the technician at kia of temecula and wanted to hear my side. I explained to him my issues and the analyze nick said so is the check engine light on? replied no he said so it's fixed then I explained to him no since kia of temecula couldn't give me answer why or what is causing the issues of my kia Rio. Nick said he would call me back, it's been 2 weeks no phone call back to me.

The engine stopped in traffic on hwy, wife was in danger of being hit by other vehicles,no power to get to edge of roadway on bridge, heavy construction, had to climb out passenger door, down embankment to safety. Towed vehicle home to find engine locked up. Maintenance done regular belts, tires, oil changes and battery replaced. Only fuel gauge issue is all problems, ask dealer was told to bring in for estimate 300. 00 to check. After issue on highway find out timing belt and engine problems have occur on this model since 2001. Sad for veteran unable to make repairs due to disability. Never buy or recommend kia to anyone.
The contact owns a 2005 kia Rio. The contact stated that the driver was driving 20 mph when she attempted to slow down but the brakes failed. The vehicle coasted into an alley. While the vehicle was coasting, the contact smelled burning wires. Smoke began to rise from the hood once the vehicle was stopped. The contact attempted to exit the vehicle, but was restrained by the seat belt and suffered neck and shoulder injuries. Both the contact and the driver successfully exited the vehicle and noticed that sparks and flames were seen under the hood. The fire department was notified and extinguished the fire. The cause of the fire was unknown. The vehicle was towed to the dealer. The dealer advised the contact to tow the vehicle to an auction. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage is unknown.
2002 kia Rio. Consumer states timing belt failed the consumer stated the timing belt failed for a second time at 59,059 and destroyed the second engine. The consumer was informed the vehicle would not be covered under warranty, because the original timing belt was not replaced at the proper mileage. The consumer stated the original timing belt was replaced at 53,668 and the replacement belt failed at 59,059 before the recommended 60,000. A kia representative informed the consumer the warranty only extended to the original engine, not the replacement engine.
I have a 2005 kia Rio (VIN provided later) purchased 2006, low miles. Summer 2011 car stalled, stopped & check engine light came on & had it towed to the nearest shop, ntb. Replaced timing belt & no damage to my motor. I found out the timing belt needed changing at 60k miles (mine was lower). The mechanic wasn't able to determine a reason for the check engine light. Another suggested a bad sensor & wiped something off under the hood. The light went off after driving less than 5 miles. Replaced the alternator April 2013 (new alternator, belt & parts still under warranty). June 2013 the check engine light started coming on when parked upward on an steep hill, esp when outside temp was very hot (TX). The light would remain on until after parking it in a covered garage & driving hrs later. July 2013 mandatory car inspection. Week or 2 later, problems w/ rpm started; during take after idle. About 2wks later, ac speed suddenly slowed & became warmer. 2days later check engine light on & a strange noise near the driver's side. Again, towed to the nearest shop, the same ntb. All electrical components was still working. At the shop the car started but not long. They were puzzled. After 2days I was told my motor was bad & needed replaced. No one had an explanation. I had to have my car, only transportation for me & my kids towed home. I talked to different mechanics that agree I have a bad sensor & catalyst which caused my motor to lock (pre-ignition). There are several blogs/articles w/this same problem. However, kia has never said anything about the 2005 Rio fuel problems, only the 2004 & supposedly correcting it. But it wasn't & mechanics can't diagnose it. Something is wrong & needs investigating. A fatal accident could have occurred if I had been driving on the hwy. Kia should take responsibility for lost $ and time bc they only bsndaged the problem & not actually fixing it.
I was at a stop sign and my 2004 kia Rio died , I pushed it to the mechanic and was told the timing belt lost its teeth and there is now no compression in 3 and 4 , the mileage on car is 68040. I was told basically the engine is toast and I wasn't even moving ,I was told by a couple of mechanics that the belt that kia used is faulty . The owners manual says replace 60,000 miles but replace it 105,000 in California. How would a belt be bad in 49 states except California. I found on auto MD . Com NHTSA action #10015272 service bulletin # 289221 report dating Jan 1 2005 improved timing belts for 04 Rio and optima .

Going 70 mph on interstate 4 in orlando FL my 2005 kia Rio broke the timing belt causing the vehicle to lose all engine power & rolled to a stop we were able to pull the car over to the right lane & barely avoided getting rear ended.
The contact owns a 2002 kia Rio. While the contact was driving approximately 2-5 mph in the residence driveway, the engine stalled without warning. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer where they informed that the failure was related to the timing belt. The technician advised that the engine would need to be replaced. Also, previously the spark plugs, and crank shaft position sensor were replaced by the dealer. The vehicle had not been repaired at the time of the compliant. The failure mileage was 103,000. Updated 01/14/11 updated 03/01/11 updated 04/1511.
The contact owns a 2004 kia Rio. While pulling up to a parking lot at 20 mph, the vehicle suddenly stalled. The contact attempted to restart the engine, but was unsuccessful. She was near a tire shop at the time and the mechanic stated that the timing belt failed. She had the vehicle towed to an auto repair shop and was informed that the timing belt failed and the engine valves needed to be replaced. The manufacturer stated that she would be responsible for the repairs. The vehicle is in the process of being repaired, but the contact believes that the timing belt should not have failed within five years. The VIN was unknown. The current and failure mileages were 80,000.
I have a 2004 kia Rio. I had no problems with this vehicle till the month of October when it failed inspection for emissions. I took it to the shop and it took a while before they found out it was a sensor. So then I had the car back for a week and my husband who drives the car everyday was driving home from work heard a loud noise and the car died. Come to find out the timing belt went on the vehicle. Which come to find out you are suppose to change these at 60,000 according to their book. When we bought the Rio we also bought a kia spectra. So of course we took the spectra in right away to get a new belt so we wouldn't have 2 cars down. That cost 677. 00. I had 78,000 on the spectra and there was 83,000 on the Rio. I investigated this problem come to find out alot of people had this problem so kia knows about it. I then checked the technical bulletins and found that in January 0f 2005 there was a bulletin item number 10015272. It says they improved the timing belts for the kia Rio and optima. Well they didn't improve it for my car. When the timing belt went it blew the engine. We are so made and when we took my spectra in to be done and told them what happened to the Rio they said that's to bad. We now have our car at another garage and are trying to get kia to pay for another engine. What do you think my chances are? I am at work now and I do not have the VIN number, if you email me then later tonight I can forward the VIN number to you.
Timing belt broke at 72000 miles without warning. Kia says change at 60000 miles in ky, but warranty in CA allow for 105000 mile change. Kia refused to honor warranty. Stranded for 45 minutes. Had to pay diagnostic testing at kia dealer.
Bought 2003 kia Rio new. In Jan 2005 at about 53,000 miles I heard a rattle at about 50 miles per hour. In a few seconds the engine just shutdown (timing belt broke which destroyed the engine) kia replaced under warranty. May 21 2008 while driving about 45 miles per hour we heard a squeal and again the engine shutdown. Coasted to a stop, once again the timing belt which means another engine (58,000 since the last engine) no longer under warranty (an engine cost almost as much as the car itself).
I have taken my 2002 kia Rio to a certified reputable mechanic. His determination of the faulty engine was due to the fact of a inferior timing belt. His statement was that the timing belt gave out and the engine is designed so that basically when this happens the crankshaft and valves ruin itself due to the broken timing belt. This happening leaves me with basically a $2,000 dollar loss all because of maybe a $100 part.
- the contact owns a 2002 kia Rio. While driving at 35 mph the vehicle stalled and the engine lost power. The steering, the brakes and the emergency brake were locked, the contact was unable to steer the vehicle or stop it which caused a crash with a van. The failure mileage was 77,000. There were no injuries. The vehicle was repaired three times due to the failure. The mechanic stated that the failure was due to the fuel injection system, and later claimed it was the timing belt. The contact experienced the failure after the vehicle was repaired. All of the repairs were at cost to the contact. The dealer stated there were no recalls for this year, make and model. Advised the contact of NHTSA recall#04v179000: fuel system, gasoline:delivery. The current mileage was 78,000. Customer did receive a recall letter in the mail. Updated 4/9.
Original owner of 2002 kia Rio - timing belt failed at 93,000 miles causing total engine failure (interference engine). Timing belt is covered under warranty for 100,000 miles for original owner according to the manual. Kia would not honor warranty. Several thousand dollars later, I had a replacement engine installed. It failed 2,300 miles later due to the camshaft shearing and the interference problems. Again, not covered under warranty.
2002 kia Rio - timing belt failure causes entire and instantaneous engine loss - car comes to halt in roadway unexpectedly. Timing belts are covered under kia's 100,000 mile powertrain warranty, but they do not honor their warranty for this problem.
01 Rio is a lemon & safety hazard. Many major repairs done including the timing belt & valves rebuilt, new cooling system, both control arms & boots. Wheel defect recently recalled caused excess wear/ tear on control arms, boots, alignment, tires, costing thousands of avoidable repairs. Fuel intake did come lose, nearly causing an engine fire due to defective part which was recalled. It continuously misfires, engine knocks, stalls. Ecm was recalled but didn't fix the problem. Replaced spark plugs & wires (3 times in 6 months), ignition coil, sensors (oxygen, knock, crankshaft, temp). It stops for a 1-2 days, then comes back. Annoying & dangerous. Also has acceleration problem. At times, it won't go over 40 mph & also accelerates by itself. Brakes have completely failed, though there's no crack in the line, no leaking fluid. The car is a complete lemon. Online, there are hundreds of similar complaints. Dealers are aware but conveniently can't seem to diagnose the problems especially misfiring. Consumers get nickel & dimed doing needless repairs that don't fix the problem. The optima had similar problems w/crankshaft pos. Sensor which was recalled, but dealer denies any relation to problems with the Rio. Another problem - lack of availability & high cost of parts. Its bait/switch to sell a car with known problems, then guess at needless repairs & sell parts at an astronomical markup. It's cheap to buy, but repair costs make it very expensive. Research shows misfiring/engine knock has also led to engine fires. Also problems with air bags. My airbag light has been on since purchased, but dealer has yet to fix it. Also door locking problems, people being locked in vehicles. My drivers door locks by itself (manual locks). In case of engine fire or accident, a lock malfunction could cause unnecessary death/injury. These are known problems with hundreds of complaints, yet kia has done nothing to address them. The 01 Rio is a lemon and safety hazard.

: the contact stated the engine's timing belt chipped and dented an engine piston. The service dealer determined the engine needed to be replaced.
While driving on the highway at approximately 60 mph, the car lost total power without warning. The driver was able to steer and control the car and coasted to the side of the road. Several cars had to swerve out of the way as they were going the speed limit but the car concerned was going significantly slower. Upon inspection, the timing belt sprocket was hanging outside of the plastic cover which was burning from melted plastic. The car is within the limits of the warranty and we are awaiting a final diagnosis from the dealer and coverage determination from the manufacturer.
While traveling on a residential road the car back fired then the engine seized up, the timing belt was the likely cause according to the dealer, but because it had 60,274 miles they would not cover it under warranty. The service person said they have had at least six similar failures in the last year, a couple were less than 59,000 miles and were covered. In talking to kia direct, they said because we bought the car used and had no service record from before, nothing could be done. It's clear from the number of failures this is a design defect. The timing belt failure and subsequent engine lockup could cause a fatality if it happened at freeway speeds!.
: the contact stated while attempting to turn a corner at 10 mph the timing belt broke. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop where it was determined as being the timing belt rendering the engine inoperable. No repairs have been made.
Dealer changed computer, wiring harness , 2 injectors, plug, timing belt, sensor and replaced comes switches . Bought a 2004 kia Rio in March 2005. It has been in the shop for the past 3 weeks. The consumer picked the car up at the shop, and it didn't make it off the lot before the car broke down again. Dealer offered me a rental car. Went back one week later to pick up the car and only went two miles before the car broke down again. Took the car back to dealer, and requested another car just like the one that I had a 2004 kia Rio. Dealer said could not trade the car without refinancing it. They did finance the house for the first car but refused to with the second car. Why cant the dealer finance the second car as they did the first?.
