We heard a loud bang while going over a bump at the intersection of two city streets. The bang continued to be heard when hitting bumps/potholes. Mechanic found that the right front coil spring had broken. Vehicle is a 2007 kia Sedona with no open recalls. The 2006 kia Sedona vehicles were recalled in March 2012 with SC 095 for vehicles produced from December 20, 2005 to March 20, 2006. Our 2007 kia Sedona was produced in September 2006 and was driven in illinois, a heavy salt use state, until June 2014. Since the 2006 and 2007 kia Sedonas are nearly identical vehicles, should the 2006 kia Sedona coil spring recall be extended to 2007 kia Sedona vehicles.
Mechanic was rotating tires and observed that right front coil spring was broken and left front was close to broken. Opened ticket with kia consumer affairs. During my investigation, I found that there was a recall (bulletin SC-095) for 2006 model year for this specific issue. Kia stated that recall was applicable to '06 only. We live and operate the vehicle in IL, one of the states listed in the recall. My assumption is that the conditions causing the issue dealt with in the original recall continued to exist in later model years. I feel that this could potentially be a significant safety issue. Had my wife had to make a sudden stop or sudden evasive maneuver, with one broken spring and another likely to break, there could possibly have been a catastrophic failure. There are likely a fairly significant number of cars still on the road with this issue.
The contact owns a 2007 kia Sedona. The contact stated while traveling approximately 30 mph, the front driver's side of the vehicle collapsed. The vehicle was towed to the dealer who confirmed that the coil springs caused the failure to occur. The vehicle was being repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure.
