Kia Motor Sorento owners have reported 26 problems related to other fuel system tank assembly (under the other fuel system category). The most recently reported issues are listed below. Also please check out the statistics and reliability analysis of Kia Motor Sorento based on all problems reported for the Sorento.
Please be advised this is in addition to the fuel tank corrosion previously reported. The underside of the vehicle is eaten up with rust. It is affecting the unit body as well as several structural members of the vehicle. Have spoken with kia and they refuse to do anything about it. I feel that this is a serious issue as it is affecting the entire structural integrity of the vehicle.

Dealer said fuel tank had to be replaced due to pitting and corrosion. Please note that the section of the tank that is showing signs of corrosion and leaking are inside the passenger compartment. Specifically under the rear passenger seat. The vehicle was at the dealer because the check engine light was on. Video is available and we will be advising dealer to return the damaged fuel tank to us.
The first incident was after refueling. I did not top off. The car just died while idling, took 3 tries to start then lurched when I put it in drive and died again. I was told by the dealer it was because my tank was too full. I drove 325 miles to an almost completely tank. The indicator stated I still had 76 miles left of fuel. I put 14. 5 gallons in (not to the full line) and 12 hours later, it won't start. The battery is new. It's not the battery.

The end of October 2018 my 2014 kia Sorento motor blew up. We heard the knocking on a weekend, kia said to bring it in and it stalled halfway there. Had to call my insurance because kia would not pay for towing. My kia had been checked the year before for the engine recall, of course it passed. It took 2 months to get my car back, they did provide a rental. A month later (Jan. 2019) I smelled gasoline very strong in my car. Had my husband test drive it to make sure that is what it was because I had just put in a full tank of gas. Sure enough I called warner kia of parkersburg again, once again refused towing even though I already knew about the issue with the fuel lines from the engine replacement. I had to call kia consumer affairs to get this car towed to warner kia. Turns out they forgot to replace a bracket during the engine replacement, not very Smart in my opinion for so called certified mechanics. I got it back again Feb. 2019. Now it is March 2019, my transmission appears to be slipping, hesitating to pick up speed. I almost got hit by a semi trying to get onto the interstate because car would not go fast enough. My uncle tried to see if he could check my transmission fluid and of course it is encased, but while doing this he noticed the engine coolant was very low. The level is below l. My engine was just replaced not too long ago and it was in the shop again for more work just last month. I am beyond frustrated. I have made concerns with kia consumer affairs and have not gotten anywhere. I will owe on this car for another 2 years and it looks like it won't last. Also upside down on loan. Now I am scared that my car will catch on fire or cause an accident with my children in my car all because kia can not make better vehicles or at least try to reimburse their customers to keep them happy. I want a new car, and I want kia to pay for it and others vehicles.

When pumping gas there is a sudden spewing of gasoline out of the tank and all over me. I managed several times to get a few gallons in by pumping slowly but the next day the gas gage reads empty and has actually run out of gas several times! so not only am I having a problem putting gas in, it is immediately draining or leaking out!.

Tl the contact owns a 2016 kia Sorento. While attempting to refuel the vehicle, fuel spewed out of the fueling hole. The fuel nozzle would continue to click while fueling. The contact indicated that the failure would occur regardless of how much fuel was in the fuel tank. The vehicle was taken to nationwide kia (22 w. Timonium rd, timonium, MD) where it was diagnosed that the vapor recovery line was damaged by insects. The recovery line was repaired and the failure was remedied. The manufacturer was notified of the failure, but no assistance was offered. The failure mileage was 16,500.

The 2003 kia Sorento has a problem with extensive frame rusting, to the point where some owners have had the suspension detach from the frame. One owner in particular has had issues with the gas tank needing to be replaced, and Kia Motors refuses to do anything about the problem. They built the car, sold it to people, and when consumers have complaints about their vehicle, they (kia) says that they're not responsible. You need to examine this, because people could get killed by operating an unsafe vehicle. Do something about this now, before it becomes the next pinto. Make kia fix the damn vehicles now!!!.
Every time I have to fill the gas tank on my kia Sorento 2003 it shoots back the gasoline like a proyectile. It takes an eternity to fill the gas tank if you don't want to have gas all over you. I have even being kicked out of some service stations because spiling so much gas is a hazard. Is there any safety recall for this problem? I have not heard a word from kia.
The contact owns a 2004 kia Sorento. The contact stated that while refueling the vehicle, the fuel would spew out of the tank. The contact also stated that the vehicle had been repaired under a manufacturer recall for the same failure in 2012. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 135,000. The VIN was not available.
When you pump gas it spits back out of gas tank. It does it every time you go to put gas in pump. It happens at the gas pump when its time to pump gas.
Vehcile was filled up and driven to friends house. Vehicle was stationary at friends house for few hours. When leaving I smelled the odor of gas. Got light to observe puddle of gas under vehicle. I drove home because it was dark and waited to inspect in the morning. When re-inspected it was verified gas was leaking from inside an inset on the bottom of the gas tank.
The contact owns a 2003 kia Sorento. While driving at an unknown speed, the vehicle decelerated and stalled without warning. The vehicle was able to restart. In addition, when the contact inserted fuel in the vehicle, fuel spewed out the fuel tank. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 116,000.
Bought the car used drove home . . . . Car sat for a while came out to the smell of gas so strong the gas tank is leaking at the seams. . . Tank is damp from gas soaking in. . . . . Bought a used tank fixed it and the leak it 100x worse!!!! you can't see the holes it's as if it's not sealing I have read this is a commom problem in this car. And not a cheep fix!!! no recalls?????.
I attempted to fill my 2003 kia soento ex and after pumpming about $2. 75 worth of gas, the fuel began to spit back up through the filler hose and spurted/ gush back out on to me. It gives you a false sense that the tank is full but it's not. I attempted to re-fuel and again, the gas spurt/ gush back out. I could get no more than $5. 00 dollars in the car. I spoke with the kia dealership in lithonia, georgia and they told me that they have never heard of such a matter. I was instructed to bring the vehicle back. However, I began to research this matter and it was investigated by you all. Kia did state that they would look into the matter. I'm not confident that will happen. There are thousands of complaints out there among consumers about this same vehicle between the 2003 through 2006. Please investigate! I do believe that this is a recall item. The 2003 kia Sorento was the first vehicle made by kia corporation.
Fule is shooting back of gas tank while putting in gas. This is very dangerous. Pleas tell me a fix for this. Car is stationary.
The contact owns a 2003 kia Sorento. The contact stated that the fuel was not going into the fuel tank properly upon refueling the vehicle and there was a clicking noise as if it were full. The contact had to take an extended period of time to ensure the fuel tank was actually full. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and they did not diagnose the failure. The vehicle was to be taken to an independent mechanic to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not included in NHTSA campaign number: 05v353000 (fuel system, gasoline). The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 113,000.
The contact owns a 2003 kia Sorento. The contact stated that while driving at various speeds and with the fuel tank gauge at 3/4 or below, the vehicle began to sputter and vibrate before stalling. The contact indicated that the fuel tank needed to be at least 75 percent full to prevent the failure from occurring. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic, who was unable to diagnose the cause of the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 209,000.
We were attempting to fill the Sorento up with gas when it suddenly spit gas out of the tank when we had only put $11 into to. It was close to empty when we got to the gas station. We tried a couple times with the same result. The car would not take anymore gas.
While pumping, the fuel spits back out from the tank. It is rather annoying as I lose money fueling and it takes forever to fuel. Normally when I reach about $15. 00 in gas it begins regurgitating. This happens every time I attempt to fuel.
While exiting my driveway at home (which is on a an incline and exits onto a state highway) I lost all braking capability. When I took the car into my local garage to have the problem diagnosed I was told the brake lines were completely corroded through which caused the loss of braking ability. While attempting the repairs the mechanic smelled gasoline fumes and found that the fuel lines where they exit the tank has also corroded through. I started to notice under body corrosion several years ago when the parking brake body attachment points on the rear differential corroded and became dislodged. All of this corrosion seems to be occurring much sooner than I would expect and sooner than I have ever experienced with other vehicles I have owned manufacured by other companies.
The contact owns a 2006 kia Sorento. The contact stated that she smelled fuel coming from the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer for diagnosis, who stated that the fuel tank was leaking and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted but refused any assistance to the contact. The failure mileage was 72,900 and the current mileage was 73,100.
