I purchased my 2007 Spectra5 used with 155,000 miles on it. The engine had no codes or any stored codes. It ran fine until I filled it up with gas. I do not overfill the tank because I understand evap issues. After filling up the vehicle would stall at idle and occasionally lose power (momentarily) at highway speeds (55 mph and up). Obviously this is an extremely dangerous situation! once the gas level got below 1/2 tank the issues went away…but now I only fill the tank to halfway and the problems arise again every so often. Since there are no codes present I cannot replicate the issue without possibly damaging components further and I already replaced the battery, plugs, iac valve, maf sensor, and oil to try to remedy this problem. From reading other’s comments about this same problem I do not want to keep pouring money into a problem that kia itself seems unable, and unwilling, to fix. This is extremely frustrating and dangerous as occasionally the vehicle loses all power on the highway at speeds exceeding 55mph and I feel an accident is inevitable. I’m not financially well off enough to just eat the cost of this vehicle and get a new (used) vehicle though so kia has really put me (and other drivers) in a difficult and dangerous position. As others have stated from mechanics who have tried to diagnose this issue, there may be a serious issue with the evap system including, but not limited to, the charcoal canister and purge valve. I will try replacing the fuel filter in the gas tank but I do not have high hopes that this will fix this problem. Once again, there are no codes present before or after these stalling/power loss problems and live data from and obd2 scanner is within parameters for this vehicle and it’s age. I need to report this now so everyone, especially kia, is aware of this issue and information.

The contact owns a 2006 kia Spectra. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 11v256000 (fuel system, other). The contact stated while starting the vehicle, the brake pedal was depressed and went to the floorboard. The check engine and brake warning lights were illuminated. The dealer was made aware of the recall and failure but offered no assistance. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure but offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 116,000.

My car is revving, even in park. If it occurs while driving, the brakes are hard to push as well.

When I applied the brake, the car sped up and lurched forward hitting the vehicle ahead of me which was stopped at a traffic light; I had a mechanic inspect it, he said it was the brake calipers and replaced the calipers, and rotors, and the problem has continued to occur. . Have had it back to the mechanic 3 times and he says he cannot reproduce the problem.

My son was in a collision, he rear ended someone, the whole drivers side in totally caved in and the airbags did not deploy.

This car is trying to kill me. I turn on my car, feet aren't on the pedals, my rpms rev and sputter up to 4,000+ without me doing anything. Sometimes it will launch me a bit when I'm trying to back out of a parking spot. Sometimes I'll be at a stop sign or a red light, completely stopped, foot on the brake, hard. Cross-traffic flowing. Suddenly my engine revvs and my car lunges forward. Wtf kia? I've taken it to kia once and they told me its a transmission problem that's going to cost more than the car is even worth and more money than I have to spend. So now what? I'm going to pay for a life endangering mechanical problem that likely costs dollars and minutes to fix because the mechanic thinks its a transmission problem? hopefully something is resolved before this car wrecks itself.

Intermittingly, after starting the vehicle, engine begins revving. Intermittingly, while slowing & stopping at a traffic light, engine begins revving and attempts to lurch forward. I have to press the break very hard to keep vehicle from moving forward. Fred anderson kia, raleigh, nc investigated this problem on 7/10/15 but was unable to recreate the problem. They re-cleaned the throttle body. The issue has continued on and off since then. On 8/20/15, after approximately 45 minutes of highway driving, I pulled into the parking lot at work. I put the car into reverse to back into a parking spot & the engine started revving dramatically & the car jerked noticeably as it went into gear. I backed into the spot & put the car in park, again jerking. I let the car idle for a few minutes & moved it in & out of gear. The revving worsened, the car attempted to lurch forward even with both the break & emergency break & continued jerking with every gear change. I have an appt. On 8/21/15 with fred anderson kia to investigate. My concern is the safety of the vehicle, as I have seen an indication of the same problem with other kia vehicles on this site & other sites. It seems as if kia is not resolving the issue and I don't want to have an accident because of it.

On my way to work I took the same route that I always take. I was going about 25mph and all of a sudden all of the lights came on ( check oil, battery, emergency break, tire pressure, airbag, and check engine) the steering wheel completely locked up causing my car to swerve right into a community mail box. My windshield is broken, the front passenger side is off and the two passenger side tires are both flat. When I got my car in March of this year three days after I got it it had started doing this I took it back and it was in the shop for more than 3 months. When they had told me this problem was fixed I trusted that they were right but unfortunately it led me to this. . . The dealership has not returned my phone call and my insurance does not cover for a rental car. I have 2 children and my job does not pay me enough to just pay and get a new car or pay and have this car fixed. I am very unhappy with the responses about this car. Why would these cars be sold to people.

As I was driving my 2007 kia Spectra out of nowhere all my emergancy lights came on and my car locked up and turned off while I was exiting the freeway. The steering wheel locked up and I could not turn it to get my car off the road. I then had to put my car in park turn the egnichin off then restart it. This has happened more than 3 different times. Also as I am driving, my car starts to slow down like it starves for gas and I have to step on the gas and push the pedal down all the way before it will eventually pick up and go.

I was involved in an accident going north to cross an intersection. The other party failed to yield going southeast at the same intersection. I did hit their vehicle, Dodge hemi ram 1500, head on their right side. The airbag failed to deploy when in fact according to experts, it should have for this type of accident. Not to mention this is the second collision this vehicle has been in and the airbag has never deployed. There was no sign of the airbag not working properly prior to the incidents. Due do this, I obtained a head and neck injury and the car was totaled.

My daughter owns a 2009 kia Spectra a friend getting in the rear seat tried to open the door and the outside handle broke-off. About 6 months later the front inside driver-side door handle stop working. About 1 year later on Jan-31-2014 the front out-side drivers-side handle broke-off. Now no way to with no way to open the drivers door, this is very dangerous. With three handles broken there must be a recall on these handle. If there is not a recall, there should be one. Other problems with this, cam-shaft sensor had to be replaced, also the air-bag light is on. This car is junk, kia should be ashamed of building it and selling it for $16,000 to $17,000.

I was visiting my fiance in utah when a tan car hit my driver's side front end. We both were put into a spin and he hit me a secondary time. My car has since been totaled out and labeled as beyond salvage. The entire front end is missing and there is sever engine damage. The auto body shop and my insurance company said I needed to contact kia and let them know about the airbag failure to deploy. Kia said my car is built to collapse a certain amount before airbags will deploy. They also said since I was put into a spin my car did not decelerate fast enough to trigger the airbags, but since I had decelerated while spinning that's what prevented them from deploying upon the second impact. They only investigated my car via photographs and my verbal statement to them. They also told me this was not a problem in my car, but according to this website there are multiple airbag deployment failures with my make and model car. I asked kia if they would put what they had concluded in writing and at first they said yes but now they are saying it will take a while. I am concerned.

Car took me off the side of the road and straight into a tree dead center roughly going 35 miles an hour. Air bags did not deploy!!!! hit my head on steering wheel. And now trying to figure out if it was the dealership selling defective cars or if its kia defect. Not understanding this whole airbag does not deploy thing because the safety graph explains 0-8 mph airbags will never go off 8-14 mph airbags are possible but not likely 14-above airbags should deploy always.

After I fillup gas tank car shake and die on the highway orlando FL kia dealer change the canstar in the tank steel doing the same thing. It is very dangeres needs to be ck by the gov.

Vehicle surges while driving and/or while stopped in traffic.

I reported multiple complaints on fuel tank over filling, tank was replaced but problem still exists. Lost of power when driving and excilaration when trying to stop. Also have problems with engine,engine was replaced but problem still exists.

Pulling out of a driveway to center lane and then merging with traffic, the vehicle would not accelerate. Rpms would flare, but car had no power as if engine was not getting fuel. This would happen intermittently. Vehicle was taken to dealer who stated gas had gotten into an emissions part in the fuel take, stating it was caused from over filling the tank. Vehicle owner told dealer that the tank had never been over filled or capped off while fueling the vehicle, so the part must be defective. Vehicle owner still had to pay to replace canister close valve. Dealer claimed that rpm flare up and loss of power was caused from the clutch slipping, although rpm flare up never occurred while dealer had the vehicle. At 100,000 estimated miles, the same fuel valve needs to be replaced again, and to date, the fuel tank has never been over filled.

I owned a 2007 kia Spectra 5 sx the car had around 36,000 mile on it. We have never had any problems out of the car then on the 10th of Jan 09 my husband drove the car to run some errands. He was sitting at a red light when the engine compartment caught fire for no apparent reason and completely destroyed the car. When we called kia for roadside assistance we were told it was an insurance matter and we would have to call them. The only thing they have offered to do is buy the car back for around 7,000 dollars which is less than my insurance company is offering and no where near what the loan pay off is on the car. They refuse to do anything else. So much for my 10,000 10 year warranty which covered nothing. My husband could have been killed but luckily escaped without injury. I really don't want this to happen to some one else with a worse out come.

I paid cash for a kia 08/09,the engine light came on when it was drop off by the dealership. I call right back I was told to bring it in. This continue 3 times after, the crank shaft went out,the fuel sensor was the 4 time with me 1 time with the other owner. She put 3500mi. On the car fact. My title said, 200 mi. Then, the gas peddle was so hot I could not keep my foot on it. I was call by kia, park the car or it will blow up on you. I was on the road next to a cane field no houses close to me. I'm 65 yrs. Old, been going for over 38 mo. Because the dealer was louisiana new car commissioner(1) he keeping me at bay. This car was on it way back to kia manfacture. But was sold to me because I paid cash. They they tried to buy back the car from a loan CO. Where I took a loan on it. They laugh at me tell me I'm on my own. I still have the warranty on it. Could you help me. This was a new car I was sold even though some one else had it before me for months 3500mi. Yet on my title it said 200mi.

The vehicle was taken to the dealer, but they were unable to find a defect. The failure mileage was 36,000 and current mileage was 40,000. I was driving my kia Spectra 2006 knafe12166522xxxx and within 5 minutes of the engine light going on my engine died. I was stranded on the highway near clinton, NJ. Kia refuses to honor the 10 year/100. 000 mile warranty stating the reason is my fault due to lack of transmission fluid etc ??? I have had to replace the brakes and tires on this car since I purchased it in Jan 06. In an accident prior to this the air bag did not open.

2003 kia Spectra. The car has been in 2 accidents and the airbags did not deploy. During the first accidentconsumer's vehicle was cut off by someone in front. In turn a SUV hit consumer's vehicle on the rear passenger's side. During the second accident consumer's vehicle rear ended a car in fron. This was a front to rear collision at 25 t-30 miles mph. There was injuries in the second accident. A police report was taken. Also, there there was a problem with oil circulation. Ithe consumer was told by the dealership that the oil sending unit was not working properly.

I am writing in regards to an ongoing problem with my 2003 kia Spectra. This will be the third time I have dropped off my vehicle to the tallahassee kia repair shop. At the conclusion of the first repair, 5-19-05 I was told the problem was rectified. When I contacted the dealership about the problem at the beginning of June I was told to have the fuel filter replaced, I have done so but this has not rectified the problem. As of late, perhaps due to the heat, the problem is worse. The vehicle is still surging forward while I have my foot pressed on the brake. The problem occurs after the vehicle has been driven around town or on road trip and will sometimes when I first start it up. It occurs more often when the air conditioning is running. My father believes that the computer is bad or that the service has not been done according to the bulletins. Obviously, this is not only a dangerous situation but it is causing additional wear and tear on the transmission and brakes. At this juncture, the vehicle is unsafe to drive. When I spoke with a service technician at my local tallahassee dealership at the beginning of June I was told that I could drop the vehicle off and they would try to simulate the problem. The first time the vehicle was brought in I was without a vehicle for a number or days and had to rely on family and friends for transportation to work and school. I am scheduled to bring in my vehicle 8 -10-06 and they are still refusing to provide a vehicle for transportation. With no other choice I am forced to bring it in for safety reasons.

While driving at any speed vehicle cut off. Consumer had the vehicle serviced, but mechanic could not duplicate the problem.

At the end of July 2004 my kia Spectra began to act as if the car was choking and not going to start after I turned on the ignition of the car. I noticed that the car only did this after it had sat for a while (like over night). I took the car to the dealership where I had purchased it a year earlier and they said that there was not any thing wrong with the car it was acting normal. If that is the case then why is it just now starting to act like this and it does not do it all the time. If you ask me I think they just don't want to fix the problem while it is still under warranty. I bet if I where to take the car to the dealer after my warranty has ran out then they would find what is wrong with it because I would have to pay to get it fixed. Guess what farrell kia of spartanburg I only have 11,500 miles on this 2002 kia Spectra. By the way the car is still acting like it is about to turn off or choking when I try to start the car sometimes.

Air conditioning quit working shortly after purchase. Kia returned the car after 2 weeks. It worked for 1 hour. Returned it to kia-kia returned after 5 weeks. Air worked for 3 weeks. Returned to kia-said it was the freon. Worked for 30 mins and quit. I cannot take it back to have it worked on because they will not give me a car to drive. I am currently driving in the heat with no air because they refuse to accomodate me. I have owned this car for 5 months and only driven it for 3. 5 months because of repairs.

I got in a accident when my brakes went out that night and I couldn't stop. When my car was in the shop they told my that the brakes went out and I need the have the brake line checked out. I took my car back to the dealer and they told me that the kind of brakes they are the would squeak. They never took the time to really look at the brakes because that same day I had my brakes replaced. I have had transmission problems and alternator problems and a lot more.
