Failure Date: 06/08/2025

The contact owns a 2017 kia Sportage. The contact stated that while driving approximately 45 - 50 mph, the vehicle started to decelerate unintendedly. The contact depressed the accelerator pedal; however, the pedal went to the floorboard, and the vehicle failed to accelerate as needed. The contact attempted to depress the brake pedal; however, the brakes failed to stop the vehicle. The contact activated the hazard light and was able to coast to the side of the road and noticed smoke coming from underneath the hood of the vehicle with a burning odor. The contact turned off the vehicle and had the vehicle towed to a nearby mechanic. The mechanic determined that the engine had failed and referred the contact to the dealer for assistance. The vehicle was towed to the dealer, and it was determined that the engine needed to be replaced. The contact found information on NHTSA campaign number: 17v224000 (engine and engine cooling) online; however, after discussions with the dealer, it was decided that the contact had to provide maintenance receipts before any engine replacement could be finalized. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was informed of the failure, and a case was opened. The failure mileage was approximately 88,000.

37 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/26/2025

The car is going through oil at a ridiculous rate. I have checked and it is not leaking. It is causing poor acceleration and driving performance. I make sure there is also oil in there but I should not have to do it as often as I do.

What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? the engine failed while driving ([xxx])—specifically, the engine seized and became inoperable while driving on the interstate. Yes, the engine is still available for inspection upon request. (currently at the dealership - due to overheating while driving (after engine had been replaced on 3/26/2025) 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? on [xxx], the engine failure occurred while the vehicle was in motion, causing a sudden loss of power and steering assist. This placed me and other drivers at serious risk, especially since it happened on the interstate and I was unable to maneuver or accelerate safely. On [xxx], the engine overheated in severe, bumper to bumper traffic. The owner’s safety was put at risk due to the high volume of traffic and little options to pull over. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? yes, the engine failure has been confirmed by both an independent mechanic and a kia dealership. They diagnosed the engine as seized and non-repairable without a full engine replacement. Engine was replaced by kia on March 26-28, 2025 and returned to the owner on March 28,2025. At the dealership's recommendation the owner replaced all the hoses and belts. Owner was assured all fluids had been refilled and engine repair was complete. 39 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/12/2025

I own a 2017 kia Sportage, and I recently experienced a malfunction indicator engine light turning on. Upon diagnosis by kia russ darrow at odana rd madison, WI , the vehicle displayed dtc p001000 – ‘a (intake)’ camshaft position actuator circuit (bank 1). They have noticed oil leakage around the e-cvvt motor plug area. It pointed to camshaft position sensor malfunction and kia service say what the vehicle needs is a cvvt cover and seals/gaskets relating to the variable valve timing on the camshaft as it’s throwing the camshaft sensor circuit “high” voltage kia has issued technical service bulletin (TSB) sa305, which acknowledges a similar problem in earlier production models of the same vehicle (built from December 10, 2015 – September 12, 2016). However, my vehicle was manufactured in January 2017, and kia has not yet included it in the affected range. Despite this, I am experiencing the exact same issue outlined in the TSB. This failure poses a potential safety risk because it can affect engine performance and reliability. If left unaddressed, it could lead to unexpected engine stalling, loss of power while driving, or further engine damage, creating a hazardous situation. I have not yet received confirmation from kia regarding an official recall or warranty extension for my vehicle, but the symptoms are identical to those covered under sa305. The issue has been reproduced and confirmed by a mechanic, and I am currently in the process of contacting kia for further inspection and assistance. There were no prior warning messages, aside from the check engine light (mil) illuminating when the problem first occurred. This complaint is being submitted to request an investigation into whether this defect extends beyond the current TSB range and to determine if additional 2017 Sportage models should be included in a service action or recall to prevent safety risks. The affected component is available for inspection upon request.

40 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2025

My kia engine is blown. Kia engine rod bearing failed due to metal shavings when they made the engine. They didn't blow the shavings out. They are stating it's my fault do to lack of maintenance records they will not replace my engine. This is there loophole in the lawsuit to deny people of there claims.

41 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/30/2025

Kia when producing the engine left metal shavings that they didn't blow out. This lead them to put a ksds sensor in. The sensor just let's you know of a catastrophic engine failure. It did not fix the problem. This is leading to engine failures and kia finding loop holes to not replace them. This is kia neglect not the consumer. They are finding ways to blame the consumer for maintenance records to deny an engine replacement.

43 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2025

9 weeks ago, my daughter was driving my car with my [xxx] grandson. While she was driving it, it went into limp mode on her. She was close to home, thank goodness. There were no warning signs prior to the limp mode. We had it towed to columbia Ford kia in columbia, CT. They found there was no compression and a burnt exhaust valve which these vehicles are notorious for. The 100,000 mile kia warranty claims it won’t be covered due to normal wear and tear. When we purchased the car, we bought the extended warranty. Currently, the dealership is breaking down the engine to find the reason for the burnt exhaust valve. Then an inspector from the extended warranty will decide if it is covered. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

44 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/27/2024

The engine consumes oil excessively, oil changes have been done at dealer well before service intervals since brand new and it consumes oil to the point we add oil within a week of oil change. Engine seals have very minor seepage but no active drips or leaks. The oil consumption has lead to weak engine internals were I am now experiencing a cylinder 2 misfire, burnt exhaust valve, among other issues and the dealership will not stand behind the class action lawsuit and extended warranty over this engine, quoting me over $7k for an engine that was defective and poorly built from factory.

45 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/08/2024

On November 8, 2024 a large oil leak was noticed where the kia Sportage had been parked. When the oil was checked it was empty. There had been no warning lights prior to this occurring and I have always provided maintenance to this vehicle. The car was towed by aaa to a local kia dealership the next day. Their technician found "leaking severe due to oil pressure switch shooting oil through the main wiring harness and to the injector harness". The repair cost was estimated at $6,148. 94. I was told that my warranty would not cover this expense even though I have only 70,875 miles. I have not received a notice from kia indicating a recall or advising that I will receive extended warranty coverage. Research has shown that many kia vehicles and others have had this same oil pressure switch problem. This malfunction is extremely dangerous since I drive often on interstate highways and could have been involved in a major breakdown with possible accident. Kia needs to pay for this repair.

46 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/26/2024

I own a 2017 kia Sportage 2. 4l (VIN: [xxx] ). In October of 2024 , the vehicle began making a loud engine knocking noise consistent with a known rod bearing failure. I immediately stopped driving and it has been in my garage to prevent further damage or safety risk. I contacted kia America corporate twice 4/17/26 and was denied engine replacement twice. Kia stated I was not eligible for coverage under the engine defect settlement?ksds update requirements. We are the second owner of the car having purchased it in 2020. I never received the letter about the knock sensor update. I did receive a recall in Dec 2026 a tow hitch harness and another in March 2026 for voluntary emissions campaign. I asked why I did not receive notification they said they most likely sent it to original owner they would not ck if received and then said the NHTSA sends those out and to contact you which is not the case they send them out. I have a 2. 4l engine consistent with the defect causing sudden engine failure, fires and hazardous driving conditions. I was denied being able to file a report for not having the software update for the engine knocking (I never received) and for not services it with a kia dealship I maintained my vehicle and have my documents. Thank you for your time in this frustrating matter. [xxx] . Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

The failure mileage was approximately 152,000.

50 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 08/17/2024

On August 17, 2024, my 2017 kia Sportage suddenly lost power on the highway. The check engine light came on seconds before the engine seized completely. I was able to pull into the breakdown lane because I was already in the exit lane. It was a very frightening moment and could have been dangerous if I had been in a different lane or in heavier traffic. Component that failed: the engine seized. The dealership found burned holes in the valves of cylinders 2 and 4. The vehicle is still in my possession and available for inspection. Safety risk: sudden loss of power on a highway placed me and others at risk of a serious accident at high speeds. Confirmed by dealer: the dealer confirmed valve damage and misfire codes. Root cause was not confirmed. Inspected: the vehicle was not fully inspected by an authorized kia dealer. Kia observed burned valves and did not investigate further into the engine to identify the cause. Warnings prior to failure: the check engine light came on minutes before the failure. No prior symptoms. Assessment: rod bearing failure is suspected due to the sudden engine seizure. During the first visit to the dealership, a diagnostic fee was paid, but kia stopped investigating after discovering burned valves. On the second visit, the dealership attempted but did not complete the bearing clearance test. They also chose not to open a techline case, which is required under kia’s own NHTSA-documented bearing clearance test procedures (TSB sst067 rev 2) when the test cannot be completed. Kia has provided incomplete diagnostics and avoided further investigation, leaving me without answers. I was told I need a new engine, but I have never been told what actually caused the failure.

51 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/26/2024

Engine seized on my way to work on July 26,2024. Oil consumption, riding rough.

52 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 07/16/2024

I have had this car not even two years and until 8 months ago I never had issues but now it has been burning/draining the engine oil like crazy. I mean every three days I have to put about 4 quarts with how bad it goes. I've already checked for leaks and anything burning from the exhaust and there's nothing. I've called kia and they want me to pay $200 just for them to diagnose it and not fix anything. It puts me and my sisters safety on the line because it jerks whenever it is low and then whenever it is idle. This hasn't been recreated/replicated by a dealer as I don't have the funds for them to check. There aren't any warning lights or sensors telling me anything. It's gotten to a point where I'm just not sure what else to do and I've done research where in the past, this car specifically has this kind of problem yet it shows no current recalls of it.

The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 113,598.

54 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 06/11/2024

The vehicle has had recurring drivability problems since at least June 2024, including repeated check engine light illumination and severe loss of acceleration. On 06/19/2024, dealership service records document that the check engine light was on and the vehicle would not accelerate past 40 mph, and the check engine light was flashing. More recently, while driving on the interstate at highway speed, the vehicle suddenly lost power and dropped speed, forcing me to pull over on the side of the road for safety. This created a dangerous situation and risk of collision. The problem continues despite multiple service visits. A dealership service visit on 06/05/2025 documents stored diagnostic trouble code p0420 (catalyst system efficiency below threshold), but the dealership stated no further repairs were recommended and no repair was performed. This issue is recurring and creates a serious safety hazard due to sudden loss of power while driving. Vehicle: 2017 kia Sportage VIN: [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 143,000.

57 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/20/2024

I was driving down the hiway and my vehicle just shut down without warning. Kia will fix for $12,000 . This is unfair I feel it should be fixed this happened almost a years ago and still nothing!.

58 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 03/19/2024

Car shuts off while driving on interstate, causing loss of power steering and requiring navigation to shoulder before restarting. Car will restart. This is an intermittent issue. Had car repair work replacing the crank shaft position sensor at kia dealership and after picking up, it happened twice in the same week. Dealership is not able to reproduce the issue and unable to resolve. Car is not safe to drive. This has occurred at least 5 times.

60 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/29/2024

After an oil change and driving the vehicle 375 miles the oil level is between full and low. This would be an excessive oil consumption issue.

61 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/23/2024

This engine is consuming oil in excess of 1. 5 quarts per 1000 miles. This could leave to engine failure, resulting in loss of control and propulsion leading to a possible collision.

62 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/16/2024

I have the ksds and the engine light came on right when my engine began shaking and knocking and died in the middle of downtown chicago traffic while driving. I had it towed to the dealership and they stated that I had no compressions in a cylinder which is part of the engine and I needed a replacement engine. My vehicle had regular maintenance at kia they change my oil, add coolant and anything that is needed and they never told me that it was burning oil and had any other issues nor did they at any time say the compression was low or going bad. If they didn’t notice how was I to know, it’s not tires where I can go put air in them. The incident was very frightening and sudden and could have cost bodily injury. The settlement states the rod bearing issue, however the compression cylinders are on the short block and I had the ksds and whether or not it’s the rod bearing kia needs to own the engine issues period because they know the compression cylinders issues were going to happen. The settlement was not written very exclusive to rod bearing with kia updated warranty coverage letter dated April 2, 2021. This has and is happening to thousands of kia owners and we honestly don’t know who to contact because kia is not helping nor do they care. I promise you if you put out a notice or survey about this issue you will be shocked to learn how many people are actually affected by this issue with no known resources/resolution .

63 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/09/2024

I took my car to the kia dealer because I burn I was smelling burn oil. They told me that it wasn’t burn oil. It was the rubber burning I replace the inner and I’m still smelling the oil burning. I’m putting in oil four times a week, and they still not tell me why I’m putting so much oil then I want to say because I do too much highway mileage that’s why I probably burn it so much oil, but that should be impossible.

64 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 02/03/2024

Engine failed on the highway. Car is part of the class action lawsuit but dealer is refusing to replace engine for free. Asking me to pay $7k. Claiming that dtc is reading p0303.

65 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2024

I have taken my Sportage to the service department multiple times due to having to add oil multiple times after an oil change. They told me that the engine needs to be fixed but won't fix it until the car stops working. Now they are telling us that it isn't going to matter because they aren't going to cover the engine.

66 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 01/04/2024

My engine failed. I had to continuously fill it up with oil due to it going through oil like crazy. I scheduled a maintenance on it and the day of the appointment, a rod threw in my engine due to oil deprivation. I also had just put a quart of oil in the day before the engine went out. Kia states the engine recall is only for certain 2017 kia’s - I say otherwise. There have been more people complain on facebook in a whole group where the same exact thing happened to them. I kept up on my maintenance. I loved my car. Now I’m left to figure out 9k to fix the engine! this is not right. I have never been late on my payments, I have only had 1 place to change my oil and that is the dealership I purchased the vehicle from. I have no vehicle! I am a single mother of 2. I can’t have no vehicle. I have seen so many settlements of engine failures and oil deprivation.

67 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 12/05/2023

I was driving home on I-91 s when my car started smoking from under the hood. There were no warning lights and the temperature gauge read normal with the lever at the center. I pulled off at the next exit and parked in a parking lot. I popped the hood and found that a fire had started around the engine. The fire grew to the point that the whole front half of the car was burned before the fire department was able to put it out. The vehicle was assessed by my insurance, but I think the extent of that was to determine whether it was a total loss (which it obviously was).

68 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/14/2023

Driving as usual and all of a sudden no acceleration. No warning lights at all. Started smoking. Towed to flynn’s. They said there is a known oil consumption issue and the motor locked up. Communicated with kia and they say to have it looked at - at a cost. Said it’s not under warranty. But is a likely know issue!.

69 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 11/01/2023

I took my vehicle in three times for excessive oil consumption. It’s been going through three quarts every thousand miles. The first oil consumption test ran over by 100 miles and the dealer made me do another one. It was determined that 3 1/2 quarts of oil were burned in thousand miles . There was no other diagnostic done. The dealer told me that the warranty does not cover oil consumption when I advise them that oil consumption is a side effect of the real problem which is most likely the rod bearing issue and I did get the update so the engine is supposedly covered lifetime by kia dealer and chia have been going back-and-forth to no resolution and today I was told that it’s a piston failure not rod failure, but neither of those things have been checked out. I was told I would have to pay for an engine breakdown and then chia America told me to get another opinion from another kia dealer , in the meantime, my car is burning like crazy. It’s pinging on acceleration, and occasionally when I start it shutters and cuts off.

70 Engine And Engine Cooling problem

Failure Date: 10/29/2023

My daughter and I were driving home from my brother's house, when we stopped by mcdonald's to grab food, we noticed our car smoking really bad. I had her pull away from the drive-thru and into the empty parking lot. We got out just seconds before the car burst into flames from underneath the hood of the car.
