2 Power Train problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 04/03/2015

I just purchased the vehicle from a gentleman. He had purchased the vehicle two years ago at 88. 000 miles, and started having trouble with the transmission about two months ago. About three weeks ago the gentleman had the vehicle towed to his service center who then notified him that his transmission needs replacing. I have bought the vehicle and plan to replace the transmission. It does seem a bit early for a two owner vehicle at 110000 to need a new transmission. It was well cared for not abused.

4 Power Train problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 01/02/2012

Transmission began to have a rough 2nd to 3rd shift around 60,000 mi. Complete 3rd gear failure by 69,000. Car will accelerate to about 25 mph and then shift into 3rd and its like being in n car will coast and engine will rev. Have to install new transmission. Shop said it was clear from the condition of the car that it had not been abused, and that a transmission should last to about 150,000 miles.

5 Power Train problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 09/01/2011

I just purchased this vehicle for my daughter 16th birthday. Nightmare. The rear window passagers regulator went out cost to be over $300. The transmission has a hard shift bang from 2nd to third gear. I took it to a transmission shop. They want to rebuild it at a cost of $4000. Estimate was to replace cracked high clutch piston & or valve body leaks. Labor would be over 20 hours worth of work. I am stuck with no vehicle for my daughter who is upset that she can't enjoy her first car. What a shame. Very disappointed. I thought landrover was reliable like BMW. Apparently not.

6 Power Train problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 05/16/2011

At 88,000 miles, my 2003 Land Rover Freelander lost ~80% of power while going up a hill on a major high way and started to billow smoke. After steering the vehicle out of traffic, I popped the hood to find the material on the lower side of the hood on fire. Upon putting this fire out, I realized there was still a large amount of smoke coming from the underside of the engine cover and my anti-freeze was empty, when served only a couple weeks prior. After letting the vehicle cool, I took off the engine cover to find it had a mixture of coolant and oil resting on top of it; a dark-milky colored liquid. Upon having it towed and further inspected by a professional, not only is my head gasket gone, a fitting on the a radiator line had melted above the engine, and a catalytic converter is as well. I got it back to my house in this condition because I still owe $7500 and have only had it for 1 year. Mechanically totaled in my driveway, it now only sometimes will shift and when it does, only happens with force. Prior to this almost fatal disaster, I had three window assemblies brake; ruining the motors and causing them to fall while driving, and my brake lights do not function. I replaced the brake light switch, problem with brake lights still persists. I've given up hope on this SUV and have got not one reply from Land Rover costumer service. I am stuck making payments, and even if I could afford to fix it, would never put my wife and daughter in it again. Please get these vehicles off the road, before someone is even less lucky then I.

7 Power Train problem of the 2004 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 06/04/2010

I bought this vehicle in April 2010 and have had nothing but problems ever since. It had 79,600 miles on it when I bought it and was told by the dealer that it had just recently had a transmission replaced. They didn't even know how to open the hood - passenger side. 2 months later and it dies on me going down the street. I pull over and antifreeze is running everywhere. The thermostat housing had separated in two and caused the car to overheat. I called the closest Land Rover dealer and he quoted me $800 to fix it. I searched on the internet and found the parts to fix it for $80. I replaced the thermostat and housing (1 piece) and got it running again. Since then, the sunroof has quit, both rear windows have quit and the rear sliding window won't open by key. The driver side windshield defroster will not work (only the passenger side) and I have never had an owners manual. The drivers side door will not unlock with the keyless entry either. Now I get to the engine - it started running real rough and lost alot of power. I had a local mechanic run codes on it and this is what he found: p0303 - #3 cylinder misfire; p1319 - misfire emission relevant; p1471, 1472 - vis motors evap purge valve flow blocked; p1475 - leak detection pump leakage diagnostic pump reed switch did not close; p 1775 - gearbox fault transmission system mil fault. I asked his opinion and he told me it was probably not worth fixing. He didn't even know what all of this meant. He was just going to start tearing it down and see what he could fix. I can't afford that. I live paycheck to paycheck and I really thought that Land Rover had a good name and reputation. I emailed and called them and have had no luck to this point. Everything I have seen on this model proves that it is a vehicle that should be put to rest. I am looking for any help I can get.

8 Power Train problem of the 2005 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 01/19/2010

I am driving down the road and the car shifts into extremely low gear (maybe 5 mph), f4 flashes, and the service engine, hill descent control, and traction control light up. Once I can move to the side of the road, I can turn off the car, wait less than 5 minutes and the car starts without any of the lights. The vehicle only had about 42,000 miles when the problem started - one month after the warranty ran out. For the last two years, I've driven the vehicle less than 5,000 miles because it is not dependable. They change a sensor, it's ok for about two months then the same thing happens, they clean off parts and it's good for another couple of months then it happens again. I don't know what to do with this vehicle because it runs fine when it is working! this is extremely dangerous, especially if you are on the interstate and your auto suddenly goes from 60-75 mph to 5 mph.

9 Power Train problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 05/21/2009

My 2002 freeland landrover is having transmission problems. The f4 lights came on and they are saying I need to get a new transmission. There aren't even 65k miles on the vehicle. I am very disappointed. It seems that everyone is having this problem and something needs to be done.

10 Power Train problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 01/02/2009

The car has died again, and is not running. The transmission does not work properly.

11 Power Train problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 12/09/2007

The engine/head gasket issue is the repair that is the most critical and terminal condition for the vehicle. The dealers mechanics will never fix the gasket, so they will only offer the engine replacement, but either repair will cost you more than the SUV is worth. And yes, the brake pads and then rotors wear out very quickly, because of the weight of the vehicle (the dealer says). I personally think it has more to do with the fact that there are 2 disc front brakes and 2 drum rear brakes on the vehicle, hence the wear and weight all goes to the front of the vehicle. Another poor design flaw issue, and I was told the drum brakes were there to better allow the off-roading. Yeah, who ever could off road these things, they fall apart on the driveway!.

12 Power Train problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 09/05/2007

My car has endless problems in every aspect!! anyone that owns one are having the same issues and nobody can seem to fix it, nor can I get parts to fix it, and the parts you do get to repair the vehicle break faster than the original parts on the car !! my engine has not failed yet but my transmission has and the dealer ship wont fix it and said there is nothing wrong with it !! iv paid more money fixing the car than I have for the car !! I can't go more than 1000 miles before something else breaks !! I have owned the car for about 18 months and its been in the shop for about 12 of those 18 months !! everyone that has one of these landrover Freelanders has the same issues and nobody can get parts for this car ! nothing works right and nothing runs like it should and even the mechanics at the dealer ship will take you aside and tell you get rid of it while you still can !!! I cant and neither can allot of others like me because of the money they have put into the car just to keep it on the road !! this car has left me and my 20 month old son stranded in the middle of nowhere on more than three or four or five occasions !! I lost track of how many times !! and when something goes wrong with this car your stuck wherever your at !! its not safe to walk down a freeway with a baby at any time during the day or night and that's exactly what iv had to do on many different occasions !! this is not a safe car by any means ! when my fuel pump went out my car just died at 60 miles an hour on the highway and nearly caused an accident with me and many other cars and I thank the good lord nothing happened when the car died and it felt like someone was slamming on the brakes !! this car is a safety hazard in the worst way !! kids should not be allowed too ride in this car do too the fact they might get hit by a car when it dies and leaves you on the freeway or anywhere else your at !! I don't let my son in this car unless its absolutely necessary !! I'll borrow my moms car just to go to the store with him !!.

13 Power Train problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 12/13/2006

Transmission went out in busy intersection, I was stranded 100 miles from my house. 1 month later cam shaft seal burst while driving. 2 months later engine completely blew while driving.

14 Power Train problem of the 2003 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 01/02/2006

My Land Rover Freelander has been in to the dealership for coolant smells coming into the cabin 20+ times and has never been repaired. They have replaced external parts, (reservoir tank, hoses and thermostats) and never fixed the problem. After researching the problem while it was still under warranty on my own, I found a complaint about head gasket problems with the k series engine and was told by the dealer that they new nothing about it, and you can't believe everything you read on the internet. Since then I called the CA bureau of automotive repair and had an agent investigate. The dealership offered to send it to another warranty shop which found a bad head gasket. I also called l/r direct to try and find out what they may be able to do for me. They told me they would not replace the engine because it cost $11,000 +, and the replacement engine will fail also. The engine was manufactured incorrectly at the factory. The cylinder sleeves are the wrong alloy and loosen when the engine is hot causing head gasket and eventually total engine failure. Land rover has known about this problem since 2004, technical bulletin #0036 and #0026 issued 06/18/2004. The manufacturer offered me $3500 to buy my car from me, and would not replace the engine. The vehicle only has 54,000 miles on it. This seems to be a safety hazard as well as a health issue from breathing in toxic fumes from the coolant. There have been other incidents with this vehicle which are to many to mention in this letter. Please contact ASAP about this matter.

15 Power Train problem of the 2002 Land Rover Freelander

Failure Date: 09/22/2005

I bought a 2002 Land Rover Freelander as a 2nd owner of the vehicle from a local car dealership. Since the purchase of the vehicle, I replaced a sunroof, a transmission, the brakes require constant replacement (more often than should be necessary), a passenger door window motor and the engine has been replaced once and now has blown again - I am unable to have this engine replaced #1 there are no more engines as the landrover dealer only made this defective model 1 year and there have been so many engines replaced by other owners that there are no other engines available. Even if there were any engines I would not pay $10,000 to have another "defective" engine placed in this vehicle. There are over 1400 messages on the edmond forum. Com outlining other peoples similar complaints. This defective vehicle has caused countless people's credit to be ruined, and financial hardship to untold families. I wonder why nothing has been done already with all the complaints that have been filed. Landrover needs to reimburse these owners the money they have spent - such as myself on repairs, constantly in the shop and having to pay for rental vehicles. The local dealer was rude and had absolutely no sympathy and actually told me after bringing my vehicle in to them over and over that "he will be glad when my husband and I get out from under this vehicle" and admitted that this vehicle had been a problem for them. But. . . The dealer wouldn't even offer us a free oil change for all of our hardships. It is a shame. I hope eventually something is done before this company "bellies up" and files bankruptcy and all of these families that have been ruined will have no recourse for their financial woes as a result of this horrible situation. Please help any way you can!.
