What is to say that has not already been said about this nightmare! I have replaced everything on this car: power steering system, engine manifold, coolant reservoir, water pump, radiator, brakes 2x, camshaft and crankshaft sensor, crankshaft pulley, timing belt, and now I am lucky enough to have the same transmission failure happening that everyone else who owns this junk experiences. This is not to mention that the sunroof does not work, the passenger door lock, and 3 of the 5 power windows do not work either. In the last year alone I have put more than $3000+ into this thing, and that is but a fraction of total I have put into it during ownership. . And the blue book value is less than $5000 at best! words cannot express how angry it makes me, and how pathetic it is of Land Rover to knowingly ignore the problems associated with this vehicle and the suffering that owners of it have to endure. The transmission problem alone should have a mandatory recall forced on Land Rover to fix for all Freelanders, and that should just be the beginning! I cannot tell you how many Land Rover technicians have blatantly told me that lr knows these are a money pit nightmare full of defects, and that they hate to work on them and feel bad for us. When will this sort of treatment by big corporations end? what ever happened to standing behind your product? whatever happened to government agencies assigned to enforce rules governing this sort of thing actually doing something for the consumer? I could go on and on about this nightmare, trust me, but I am too worked up at this point as it is. Please NHTSA, do something, anything for us unfortunate Freelander owners!.

While driving up a hill, my car jerked forwarded as if it got hit from the back. It happened at least 2 more times before I got it to the mechanic that same day. This is the second time since obtaining the vehicle in January 2003 that the transmission has failed. It was replaced in 2004. In 2009 my Freelander is now dead. The transmission is dead and it killed my battery. This vehicle has been a constant problem, transmission, locking devises, brakes.
2002 Land Rover Freelander - manifold failure - transmission failure.
I took my 2002 Freelander into british motors in san francisco in March of 07 with 55,000 miles on it and asked for the 60,000 mile tune up. They said no - sold me new brakes and tires instead and did an oil change. I only drive 5,000 miles a year and so I knew it would be a while before I hit 60k. I tool the car in when I had 63,364 miles on it and they did the tune up. There were many sloppy things that happened during this time but the bottom line is that after the tuneup the transmission failed - and then they said I was over the limit for the miles and voided the warranty. I have since read about hundreds of other Freelander owners who have had the same or similar problems. When they change the transmission fluid the transmissions sometimes fail. I had a friend who has the exact same thing happen only she drove a range rover. British motors blamed Land Rover and Land Rover customer complaint dept is useless and does nothing. This is happening to so many Land Rover owners that it is appalling and something needs to be done. The Freelander should have been recalled - and those of us driving it should have been warned about engine problems and what could happen when the transmission fluid is changed in routine tune ups. I paid $2,300 to get the transmission repaired so I could get my car out. I have filed a complaint with the bureau of automotive repairs in CA. This whole thing is a scam and has cost me a lot of money and time. From googling: Freelander engine and transmission problems -- ii see that hundreds and hundreds of others have had the same problem and that very little gets done about it! 1.
Just bought the 2002 Land Rover - Freelander 2 weeks ago, it has 68k miles, then its transmission totally failed, it will not go into reverse / backward. Also, when it is switching gear, the gear 2 & 3 are very very rough. Today, the mechanist told me that the transmission should be replaced.
Transmission failed causing loss of power and movement. Towed to transmission repair shop and had to have the transmission re-built. Hill decent light would come on and stay on while driving until engine was turned off for no reason before the failure of the transmission occurred.
The contact owns a 2002 Land Rover Freelander. While driving 5 mph, the transmission gears failed to shift. The dealer stated that nothing could be done and advised the contact to keep driving until the failure recurred. The failure and current mileages were 44,000.
The car is just poorly designed and a disaster. Despite our regular maintenance at manufacturer's dealers & at normal intervals, the car's engine & transmission failed. Repair costs readily exceeded the value of the vehicle. All with less than 65,000 miles. Land rover & Ford were un-willing to assist in any way. We are out of the car and will not purchase lr or Ford products in the future.
Transmission failure with 50,739 miles.

Transmission failure in middle of rush hour traffic, nearly rear ended. Less than 60000 miles on vehicle. It lost forward momentum, then slammed into lower gear. Rpms jumped. F4 flashed on dashboard. Dealership quoted $5000. 00 to replace transmission. February or March 2006 car overheated running errands on a cool day, engine rebuilt completed by dealership to replace thermostat $2000$ as warranty expired in January. Purchased new in January 2002, services exclusively at lr dealerships in richmond va, and charlotte nc. Anti-freeze odor inside the vehicle within first 3 months. Inspected and dismissed by dealership. Brake failure, used emergency brake to stop vehicle at less then 8500 miles, three months of ownership. Brake pad and rotor replacement required. Told it was driving habits. Dealership replaced an updated sensor. Sun roof fixed per recall within first year. Right door speaker vibration/feedback, new speaker installed, but problem persisted. Told that wasn't an issue.
2000 landrover Freelander - transmission failure at 57k miles. Transmission cost me 1150 dollars to fix. \ the fuel pump failed after another 100 miles. That cost me 1050 dollars. This car was junk. The car has since been in an accident which totaled it. But I can't prove the car was at fault, but I'll bet it was.
Total transmission failure in 2002 landrover Freelander (purchased in February 2003) at 56k. Two faulty vis motors found, blown left speaker cone, failed fuel sender, faulty heater fan, broken window drive bracket. Total repair cost $6000. No help from dealer, no help from landrover. Car finally unloaded in part exchange for $1,250 just to get rid of it after reading other posts on this site.
Transmission failed, in reverse and then in drive.
Our well-maintained 2002 Freelander had engine and transmission failure within 6 months of reaching 50,000 miles. In both cases the failures occurred during highway driving with no warning lights or indications of problems. In both cases the loss of power/control posed a serious health hazard to everyone in the car. One of these events occurred immediately following service and safety check by the dealer. This care is so badly designed that is a driving hazard and should be recalled in its entirety. The very extensive information on major failures without warning attest to the dangers that this vehicle is imposing on the public on a daily basis.
Freelander 2002 has had many defects. The transmission failed at approx. 50k miles & was replaced. Power windows failed. A/c hose cracked & repaired. Manifold replaced. Exterior brake lights have been replaced. Electrical power to passenger door lock system have been replaced. Now, at 70k miles the coolant leaking and engine knocking. Not worth replacing engine at this point. This car has cost more to repair than what is was worth. It should be recalled as a lemon & law suit against Land Rover.
2002 Land Rover Freelander. Transmission failed at 45,000 miles. Catastrophic engine failure at 55,000 miles. Vehicles stopped dead in the middle of rush hour traffic. Mechanics at the Land Rover dealership said that 100% of the Freelander model had the same transmission & engine failures.
When applying brakes at normal conditions abs light came on intermittently, and there was extended stopping distance. Dealer stated braking system was defective but they could do nothing about it. Also, automatic transmission failed.
