2 Differential Unit problem of the 2013 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 02/08/2021

Currently the car has 36,000 miles per the odometer. Two days ago, a humming sound started coming from the rear undercarriage while driving, and continued regardless of speed. This was a new sound, one that sounded like something was wrong, like the tire was about to fall off the car. This was scary especially since a car with this few miles should not have anything seriously wrong with it. The mechanics confirmed that the rear differential needs to be replaced, and quotes are each around $7,000. 00! this kind of defect should not have gone unnoticed by Land Rover for so long without issuing a recall or having the defect addressed prior to further production of the vehicle. This is obviously a huge financial burden, emotional burden, and one that compromised my safety. Researching online, there seems to be numerous other Lr2 owners experiencing the same issue that have reported filing complaints as well.

3 Differential Unit problem of the 2011 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 01/25/2021

Recently began hearing a noise from the rear when driving. Thought it might be from the rear alignment causing the tire tread to make this sound. Driving faster the noise would get louder. Took to my mechanic for alignment and they said it was the rear differential going out. The bearings were making the loud noise. The vehicle only has 70,400 miles and is driven 10 miles a day and never off road. Looked for any recall notice I may have missed and then discovered this same situation from several others. I entered my VIN to check for any recalls and there are none! surely this vehicle was built to better specs. For this to fail so early in the life (mileage) of the vehicle is unacceptable and needs to be repaired by the manufacturer at n/c. I'm certain there are many more than those of us who have filed here; however, there are enough on this site to take the issue serious and address the matter with the manufacturer. This needs to be recognized for what is - a manufacturing defect and needs to be fixed by Land Rover!.

4 Differential Unit problem of the 2012 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 01/12/2021

Around January 12, 2021 I was hearing a wear noise on rear differential, I thought was the l-rear tire that need it replace, just for safety, we replace 4 tires at the time, but noise was getting worse and worse, we decide to replace the front and back brakes to solve the problem, but noise still loud, and is when we found out rear differential was causing the problem and need it to be repair also, in 2 occasions, car stopped in the middle of street while I was driving, we thought it was battery, but battery was ok, and when I backing up the car, you can hear a big noise like if something is loose under.

6 Differential Unit problem of the 2009 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 08/06/2020

Rear differential problems. Today August 8, 2020 I had to put my vehicle back in the shop and it's the same issue that I had a year ago. I had the same whirring noise and I was told it was my rear differential going out. Got it replaced on March 31, 2019. Fast forward to today same noise same issue. This has got to be a recall issue. Too too many complaints about this exact same issue. This is not a reasonable fix and to have to get the same thing replaced again within a year, unacceptable. Something needs to be done.

7 Differential Unit problem of the 2008 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 10/02/2019

Premature failure of bearings, races and gears in rear differential.

8 Differential Unit problem of the 2008 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 06/24/2019

I purchased the car in March of 2017 with 101,000 miles on it. It now has 119,000. As of 24 Jun 2019, the rear end began making a noise while turning. I took it to a local import repair shop. My mechanic informed me that the differential is currently being held together with zip-ties. Zip. Ties. As I have never had work done on the rear end of the car, that means that the zip-ties were put on before I purchased the vehicle. I have no idea when but the real question is this: how long is a differential supposed to last? the differential is currently locked into all-wheel drive all the time. The differential alone will cost $4900. The fluids will cost $40. I am not sure about the number of hours of labor but it won't be over a day. So let's say a day of labor would be 8 hrs at a rate of $120/hour. 4900+40+960 = 5900. Right now, my vehicle is only worth 2,200. I owe no loan but I am upside-down nonetheless. This is not wear and tear. This differential was poorly designed. The poor design was exacerbated when the differential was not dealt with. If not replaced, the locked differential will destroy the transmission. Then what will I do?.

9 Differential Unit problem of the 2011 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 06/01/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2011 Land Rover Lr2. While driving 55 mph, a loud humming noise was coming from the rear of the vehicle. The faster the vehicle accelerated, the louder the noise became. The vehicle was taken to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the rear differential failed and needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired and was not taken to a dealer. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 83,000.

12 Differential Unit problem of the 2009 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 01/30/2019

Rear end of Lr2 started to hum at 62,522 miles. Brought it to Land Rover dealership and they told me that it was the rear differential and the cost of replacement would be $3000. 00 dollars. No vehicle should be this costly at so low mileage and after further research this seems to be a common problem that Land Rover will not fix. Definetly recall worthy as this is not safe and could be a road hazard. Noise has loudend after a week.

13 Differential Unit problem of the 2011 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 01/07/2019

The rear differential has been diagnosed with a pinion bearing failure by Land Rover. The vehicle only has 59,000 miles and has never seen anything off road.

14 Differential Unit problem of the 2008 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 11/09/2018

"takata recall" when moving at low or regular speed and turning, there is a rumbling stumping sound coming from the rear. I took it to the shop and it was diagnosed that the rear differential was the issue. On researching the land-rover forum, I found that my issue was not peculiar to me alone but it was a major issue with other 2008 Lr2 owners and costly to change too. However land-rover issued a technical service bulletin ltb00342 (issue 3) in Aug 2011) about this. Why not a recall for the faulty rear differential or free replacement of the.

15 Differential Unit problem of the 2009 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 10/30/2018

Rear differential is shot under 75,000 miles.

16 Differential Unit problem of the 2009 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 10/01/2018

My 2009 Lr2 VIN: (xxxxx) had 70k when purchased last year. The rear differential bearing has degraded/failed and it making this loud whine or humming noise. There are numerous voluntary recall bulletins #407296 is for 2010 and was dated 8/3/15. No mention of Lr2's 2009 and older. It is the same issue. It is a safety hazard and Land Rover should fix it. There are thousands in need of repair and some have had theirs repaired multiple times. Please help us. 17 Differential Unit problem of the 2008 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 08/05/2018

Like 1000s of other owners, my Lr2 needs rear differential replaced. Why NHTSA has not reviewed this is unbelievable. The Volvo's built with same design have problems with rear differential failing as well. The cost of this repair $2400-3000. . Has the NHTSA even looked into this? this is an expensive repair and I'm reading blogs where many people are attempting to do the repairs themselves n giving each other trial n error tips. Others are posting asking what's the worst that can happen if they don't do the repairs. Well, the transmission can lock up causing an accident. So what will it take for a recall to be at least considered? this seems to be very similar to Toyota prius recall several years ago. And it took how many deaths before a recall was issued?? or Ford pinto case sad thing here is. . . Nhtsa should be listening to the consumers! yet seems like not much has changed or maybe forgotten. . . .

18 Differential Unit problem of the 2011 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 07/18/2018

Noticed a loud noise from rear of vehicle while driving. The greater the speed the louder the noise. Dealer inspection confirmed rear differential failing and needs replacement. Vehicle has 38,000 miles and still has the original factory tires. Rear differential failing before original tires are wore out! potential total failure of rear differential during operation a real safety concern.

19 Differential Unit problem of the 2008 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 07/15/2018

My wife and I started noticing a humming noise coming from the rear end of the vehicle that seems to slowly be getting worse. Then we started getting a transmission fault error message on the dash. Started doing research and have found many others with the same symptoms before their rear differential goes out completely. We are driving the Lr2 across country a few times this next year. It's probaly going to go out at some point. If this is such a well known issue. I don't understand why a recall hasn't been issued!.

20 Differential Unit problem of the 2008 Land Rover LR2

24 Differential Unit problem of the 2009 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 10/12/2017

Second rear differential needing to be replaced after <24k miles. The first was replaced after 68k miles. There is a loud grinding noise coming from the rear of the truck. Took the vehicle to the dealership and they advised what I thought that it was. Land rover will not stand behind the part, tells me that it is over the 1 year warranty period. Too much of this part going bad and an expensive replacement.

25 Differential Unit problem of the 2010 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 04/25/2017

Rear differential failure. Strong noise comes from the differential which needs to be replaced entirely. Highly distractive while driving at a speed more than 30 mph.

26 Differential Unit problem of the 2010 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 04/14/2017

Rear differential bearing noise humming really loud. As if there are snow tires on my rear wheels.

27 Differential Unit problem of the 2010 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 11/29/2016

My 2010 landrover Lr2 with 70k miles, started making loud humming /grinding noises coming from the rear end late in 2016 when driving over 30 mph, I contacted Land Rover of omaha and Land Rover of north America for help in resolving this defective issue. The only help I received was a quote for about $9300 to fix it. Which I could not afford. I now have it in an independent shop to replace the rear differential with a used one that I hope lasts for $1800.

28 Differential Unit problem of the 2010 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 08/02/2016

I bought a 2010 Land Rover Lr2 from the dealer less that 1 year ago. It had 72,000 miles when I bought it, the sales rep and Land Rover said the car was a "loaner" car for customers. They said it was fully maintained and serviced at the appropriate miles. Ive only driven it 8,000 miles and the drive train is now humming and whirling. I took it to an independent shop and they said that these Land Rover are infamous in having these problems. More than any other car. In this case I strongly feel Land Rover should as a courtesy fix my rear differential because it is not a common problem and a flaw in these cars. The humming whirly noise comes as you start to run the car and gets dude as you speed up. In conclusion the repair for the differential is very expensive.

29 Differential Unit problem of the 2010 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 06/04/2016

2010 Lr2 with 25,900 miles on it developed a whine in the rear end. Dealer says the rear differential needs to be rebuilt/replaced for $2000+. Slightly out of warranty by age (but not by mileage). Dealer say's warranty will not cover, however it appears there are many many other cases for the Lr2 that have the same issue. However, it does not appear that Land Rover north America or the dealer is interested in dealing with this issue, despite the fact that it seems to be a pervasive issue. It seems there should be a recall on the rear differential issue to resolve the problem.

30 Differential Unit problem of the 2008 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 05/01/2016

Rear differential failure.

31 Differential Unit problem of the 2010 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 01/21/2016

Loud whine/growling sound coming from drive train at all speeds. Grew louder over a period of two weeks. Had to have the rear differential replaced at only 35,890 miles due to bearing failure.

32 Differential Unit problem of the 2008 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 10/30/2015

I have been hearing a loud whirring noise coming from the back wheels and kept on getting louder. I took it in to auto repair and it is the rear differential that has gone out. After searching online I found that this is a common problem with 2008 Lr2, and shoud be on recall!.

33 Differential Unit problem of the 2009 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 10/17/2015

I have 2009 Lr2 with 93k miles on it. I got 130 multi point inspection by the Honda dealer where I bought the car for the humming noise coming from the back. They gave me clean sheet with just 1 tire replacement needed. 1 week later I got the car checked by the Land Rover dealership and was told its my rear differential which will cost north of $3k. I researched and come to know that there many people out there with this large cost problem with Land Rover. . . Why hasn't this been a part of recall??? I don't have $3k+ sitting around to address the problem. Please assist. Thank you.

34 Differential Unit problem of the 2010 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 08/14/2015

I recently purchased a 2010 Land Rover Lr2 with around 61,000 miles on it from a friend who had taken great care of it. After putting about a 1000 miles on it in 2 months, a roaring noise started coming from the rear of the car while driving around at various speeds in town. Note that this car has never been off road. It was subtle at first and continued to grow louder. I looked this up online and was shocked to see that this was a potential rear differential failure and was even more shocked that it appears to be an epidemic with the vehicle. I called Land Rover in little rock, ar and made an appointment to bring the car in to be looked at. As first thought, it is the rear differential going out at 62,000 miles and there is no repair, just a full replacement for $2,800. I was told by the service tech that this is a very common issue with this car and it was a design flaw. He said that Land Rover is fully aware of the issue but there is no recall at this time as they didn't see it as a safety concern. How can this be? if driven in this condition, it will lock up at some point and there you will be in the middle of the road or freeway! note that there is also a service bulletin out detailing the repair. . 35 Differential Unit problem of the 2009 Land Rover LR2

Failure Date: 07/20/2015

Noticed that the vehicle had started to make humming noise and it seems the noise was coming from the rear of the vehicle. Land rover shop checked and said the noise is coming from the tires. Replaced all 4 tires ($1000) and still the noise remained. Got it checked from two other Land Rover shops and both reached the same conclusion - read differential / bearing failure!! my Lr2 has never gone off-road and the rear seats have been sparingly used. Called the Land Rover dealer and he quoted $8900 to replace the entire unit!! unbelievable!! online research shows this is a very common problem Lr2 owners are facing. Land rover must put a recall and fix this immediately to retain their reputation!!.
