Land Rover Range Rover owners have reported 23 problems related to power train driveline (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
I was driving my 2003 Range Rover that I just bought used 2 weeks earlier. As I was driving, the car started making severe grinding noises and lost power. I could not steer that well and was in the middle of the road. I managed to get barely enough power to make it to the side of the road and pull into a parking lot. This event was without any warning and the car made the worst grinding noises in the world. I had it towed to a local repair shop and they informed me that this vehicle has a recall on it to address the problem, which is a failed driveshaft / axle / differential operation. Because it was recalled, I had it towed to Land Rover and they are now saying that they can't fix the problem until the axle is repaired, which they say is not part of the recall. I believe it is part of the recall and they should be covering this at no cost. I had my child in the car and I think this could have been a very dangerous situation. Also, when I bought the vehicle in costa mesa, CA (house of luxuries), they assured me the car was totally checked out and had no mechanical or other issues. Now I am very angry with them for placing my life (and others) and my child's life in danger by not disclosing these problems, or at least telling me that this vehicle has a recall and to repair it before I drive. I am happy that I was told about the recall later but feel that the business I bought the car should have known this prior to the sell of the car and it could have placed our lives and others at risk had I been going down the freeway, which is in la and heavy traffic. Thank you.

My front differential has failed on my Land Rover Range Rover. There was no warning just an instant loud grinding noise and front wheel lock. I could have been killed.
Vehicle looses all forward drive when drive shaft and differential spines sheer off. This has been reported on the internet by a large population of owners of this vehicle. I was traveling in heavy traffic on I-75 north at the I-75 and I-10 interchange when without any warning the shaft failed leaving me without the abiliy to do anything other than stop. I was nearly hit by a tractor trailor as I was on an up hill grade and was not able to get completely off the express way before the vehicle came to a stop. The vehicle's park selector on the shifter was inoperative and the vehicle could only be held in place using the parking brake. The dealer said this was a common problem and that a retorfit was in the works and would be available within 30 days. The dealer had to install an original part which according to him does not contain the re-engineered fix. This leaves me out $3,000 and with a part I know will fail again in the future without notice.

Front drive shaft fault on Range Rover 2004 vouge.
The driveshaft gave out on the vehicle. This has happen to numerous people.
My 2003 Range Rover hse suffered a failure of the front differential and driveshaft. A common and known issue to Land Rover. I was traveling down the interstate and suddenly lost all forward momentum. I had to immediately find a safe place to pull over and put on the hand brake to keep the vehicle from rolling. It would not move. It was towed to a repair facility and the broken parts were replaced. It was fixed with new parts, but they are the same design of the ones that failed. I was told there is not permanent fix provided by Land Rover and this will happen again.
In 2006 our 2003 Range Rover experienced a failure of the front differential. On 5/26/2008 it experienced the same failure after being in for service just a month prior.
Sept 2003 my wife was driving 50 mph in washington DC, and the car started to make loud noises, and stopped on the highway at rush hour. The car would not go into drive without making screeching noises. Land rover annapolis said it was a front differential failure and they had to replace the transmission/ front differential. Warranty covered the costs of this. May 2008 my wife was driving 60 mph on a 4 lane highway, rt 45 in houston. The car made the same noises as in 2006, so she pulled over and could not put the car into drive without the screeching noises. Range rover houston north said it was a front differential issue and it needed to be replaced for $2500. . Read more...
I was driving at about 75 miles/hr on the interstate when my car made a loud noise and completely stopped accelerating. I was almost rearended trying to get out of the road. I was told that my by the Range Rover dealership that my front differential failed. I could have been killed and I was barely able to get of the road.
Driving on city streets, about to enter the freeway, the vehicle lost power, making awful mechanical noises. The engine was running but pressing on the accelerator resulted in metallic crunching noise and no movement. I was stranded, the vehicle was towed some 35 to the purchasing dealer. I was informed that the front differential / drive shaft failed and will be replaced. This is the second such failure. The first occurred in October 2006. Luckily both times were at slow speeds, close to home, and during the day. If this catastrophic failure of the front differential / drive shaft were to occur at speed?I hate to think of the accident that might happen, the damage and injuries that might occur. This is a serious design flaw which the company needs to address with a new design to replace the defect and dangerous design.
Land rover Range Rover mk 3 2003 model year front differential failure. Vehicle was being driven on interstate 59 south near richmond at 65mph. A grinding noise was heard from transmission tunnel and there was an immediate loss of drive to both from and rear axles. It was necessary to coast the vehicle across traffic on a busy highway to come to a stop on the hard shoulder. This was a potentially hazardous situation. A wrecker service was called and it was necessary to load the car on the back of the wrecker because of a total loss of drive rendering the vehicle inoperable. This is the second incident since I have owned the vehicle and is a known fault with these vehicles. The Land Rover dealer is replacing the complete front differential for the second time on this vehicle.
Front differential failure on highway, barely avoiding sure accident. Very lucky that accident did not occur!!.
My 2004 Land Rover Range Rover has front differential problem, was driving on highway and with out any notice car lost all power and couldn't move.
No notice or warning. Virtually instant failure. The front drive shaft and the differential input flange splines stripped. I was stranded in traffic.
A couple of months ago my vehicle just stopped on bw parkway. I had been hearing a grinding noise but thought it was my tires. I went to my mechanic who told me it was the driving shaft. He replaced a part that cost me $1200 alone. Now I am experiencing that same grinding noise especially if I go over 40 miles per hour. I have a feeling that it is the same issue again which is why my frustration has led me into doing some research on possible recalls. It appears that this is a common problem with my vehicle.
Front differential and drive shafts failed on the 2003 Land Rover Range Rover. The car was inoperable and put me in a very dangerous intersection. If this incident occurred on the highway, I believe it would have caused an auto accident.
Front drive shaft spline failure. Driving on freeway approx. 60 mph around town. Loud metal grinding noise. No vehicle acceleration response. Vehicle slowly rolled to stop. Pulled over to side. Towed vehicle to lr dealer. Received est. Of $3500 to replace shaft and front differential declined and arranged for tow to home. After a week of research, purchased aftermarket driveshaft. Installed myself and working great. Did not have to replace front differential.
Without any warning, I started to hear a "metal-on-metal" loud grinding noise coming from underneath the vehicle while it was moving forward, regardless of whether the brakes were applied or whether it was in drive or neutral. This was immediately reported to my Land Rover dealership in warwick, ri. Land rover advised that the car was not safe to drive. So, it was brought to the dealership to be diagnosed. It had front differential and drive shaft failure. Previously, Land Rover had inspected this front drive shaft and differential under a Land Rover technical service bulletin, to prevent the drive shaft and differential failure. This occurred when the vehicle was under warranty. When the failure ultimately occurred, the vehicle could not be driven and it was out of warranty. Cost to fix by the dealership was $2,700. The dealership and Land Rover north America (including appeals board) refused to provide out of warranty assistance even though they are all well-aware of this systematic failure for 2003 Range Rovers. The TSB delayed the failure long enough so that it was no longer covered under the vehicle's warranty. The failure could have lead to injury if we were traveling at a higher rate of speed.
I received a letter from manufacturer for safety recall. Part of the program is to reimburse for money paid in the past to repair part. The manufacturer has stated that the local dealership must be involved to reimburse me but the local dealership is not assisting. It is Land Rover safety recall p041 - front differential to propeller shaft spline wear. I no longer own the vehicle now.
