Lexus RX300 owners have reported 4 problems related to axle assembly (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
Complete transaxle failure - at 91000 miles, the transmission on the 1999 awt Lexus racks failed at 50 mph without warning. Although the engine was running normally, there was a sudden loss of power to the drive wheels and the car coasted to a stop. This happened on a narrow country road with heavy traffic and it was only luck that avoided an accident. The car had been routinely serviced as required by Lexus and had been in for a routine service the day prior. Review of the NHTSA complaint database suggests that this is not an isolated incident and, if so, it represented a serious safety concern for this model and year of car, in general. It was very troubling that any vehicle would have the type of defect that could lead to an unannounced sudden major failure at less than 100000 miles. The repair required replacement of the transmission. Lexus was contacted for more information, but was of no help beyond noting that the car was no longer under warranty. Lexus required that the removed transaxle be returned to them, unopened.

2000 Lexus RX 300 awd: the tone ring on the right rear drive axle cracked causing a false reading to the anti-lock brake system, the cracked ring would not turn in conjunction with the axle causing the abs system to think that the affected axle was no longer tuning therefore activating the abs system and jeopardizing braking distance, after repairing I was wondering how this could have happened and did some inquiries, I found that this is a common problem on these vehicles (right rear axles awd models) water gets into the axle tone ring area, freezes causing the ring to crack and creating a dangerous condition, unnecessary activation of the abs system for the unsuspecting driver Lexus dealerships throughout the northeast keep these a supply of these very expensive axles in stock due to their familiarity if this problem.

The car was hit on the rear passanger side; the whole rear axle came off due to such accident and the air bags did not deploy. This is a big safety issue due to the fact that I have a 5 year old son. Dt.

The right rear wheel axle sheared in two, causing the wheel to fall off. The vehicle became violent, then completely rolled over. None of the airbags deployed. We would like a complete investigation.
