My check engine light came on. I had the oil changed for the second time within 30 days because I thought it was an oil problem. The light went off as I was leaving the place. A couple days later the light would come on when I made turns, blink, then go back off. A few days later, it came back on steady, and the car started to jerk while I was driving on the interstate. It would jerk, then slowly increase speed. Last Saturday, I applied brakes, and the car rolled another few feet. Had to swerve left to keep from rear ending a vehicle. Today, upon slowing down to enter my driveway, it did it again, and I nearly hit a brick column at the beginning of the driveway. It doesn't jerk frequently, but it seems to do it more often when I am on cruise control. I love my SUV and am always bragging about what a reliable car it is. I can't afford to replace it, retired and on disability.
When I was driving three light turned on at the same time. The check engine light, vsc and trac off light. I went to a mechanic and he stated there is something wrong with the stolenid. Took it to the mechanic to check the oil pan and the stolenois is getting clogged because the transmission is shot.

The contact owns a 2002 Lexus Rx300. The contact was driving at an unknown speed when the check engine light illuminated. The vehicle was towed to an independent repair shop where the failure was diagnosed as the vehicle having excessive engine sludge. The contact was informed by the technician that if he had continued driving the vehicle, he would have seized and destroyed the engine. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure and current mileage was 83,400.
Purchased used RX-300 (yr 2000) in 2003 and the transmission died suddenly as I was coming back home at 87,000 miles. The dealer fixed it for free, a week later the car would not start and had to be towed back to the Lexus dealer in silver spring and another transmission was put in the car. Today the same thing happened, engine light went on and the transmission has to be replaced and it will cost thousands of dollars. The mileage is 127,000, not sure if it's worth getting it fixed.

My 1999 -- Lexus Rx300 has about 140k miles on it. The car is now parked so I don't kill myself or my family while driving. A couple months ago, my car just started jerking as if it was going to cut off and my check engine light came on. I work off a major highway and I was really scared. My car speed would be 50-55mph but the rpms would be as high as 6. I have never experienced anything like that before. I went to the car repair shop - I had some mis-fires and they were fixed for $150, no problem. The car repair recommended I get my front brakes done because my miles per gallon had slipped to 15 in the city. A couple weeks later, I got my front brakes done, no problems until one evening, I was driving home when my check engine light came on again. . . This time I was at the stop light and my car started idling/jerking like I needed to give it some gas or it was going to die. My check engine light is now blinking on my dash board. My husband took my car to a transmission shop and the Lexus dealership they say 2-coil ignitions have failed. And that my spark plugs need to be replaced. I also have some other transmission problems but in order to get the check engine light to stop blinking I have to fix, the coil ignition problem which cost between $515 to $775. Then they can run more test to see there is any more problems. My car is parked for now. There should be some sort of recall since this is a common problem with all '99 Lexus Rx300. This is crazy.
The contact owns a 2002 Lexus Rx300. The contact was driving 70 mph when the vehicle accelerated. The contact depressed the brake pedal to the floor and the vehicle stopped. After the dealer inspected the vehicle they informed the contact that it the fuel sensor caused the failure. The dealer repaired the fuel sensor. The engine oil was always low and the contact had to add oil to the vehicle every week. The engine also exhibited a large amount of dark smoke. The check engine light illuminated. The contact took the vehicle back to the dealer and they stated that they would not repair it. The dealer stated that they would repair the vehicle if he paid $2,000 in advance. The manufacturer was contacted and they stated that his vehicle was not a part of any recalls and there was nothing they could they do unless the contact paid the repair cost. They also stated if the vehicle remained at the dealership, he would be billed for a storage fee. The engine was damaged and the vehicle was at the dealership when the complaint was filed. The VIN was not available. The failure mileage was 48,000. The current mileage was 105,000.
This complaint is almost identical to others I have found and is very serious. Purchased 2003 Lexus Rx300 from a Toyota dealership; approximately 57000 miles now, about 56000 at purchase. Car checked by dealership, ok. No hard driving. After first distance trip (st. Louis to kc) check oil light and check engine light came on. Towed to Lexus dealer who knew right where to look. Found gelled sludge all through and said it was misuse. Complete lie. Said engine must be replaced. No help so far from Lexus. Expect to see if this is hidden defect in engine, since I have found numerous other complaints on the internet that read almost exactly the same.

My wife noticed a check engine light on as she was driving to work. She called me on the cell phone and we took the car to Lexus of clearwater. I recieved a phone call saying they had detected sludge in the engine and it would need to be fixed. They told me they might cover it under warranty because it was a known issue but they would call me back. I also checked the website and Lexus knows of the problem and says they will stand 100% behind the customer for 8 yrs and unlimited miles. No other requirenment is listed. Melissa the service person said she wanted me to talk to mark the regional guy from Lexus because they were not going to cover it and the repair would be from 8k-12k!!!! I told them they were crazy because we have had every major service required by Lexus and that oil does not just break down in a 3 year old car. Mark told me he had a hard time covering this because we were overdue by 5k on the oil change. I explained if they had know of a sludge problem 8,000 miles ago when they changed the oil why did we not get notified. Regardless I told them a cars engine is not ruined because a person drives a few thousand extra miles. I told him the car is 3 years old and we were returning the car in March 28 at the lease expiration. He told me he could get it waived for me if I spoke to the sales manager about purchasing another Lexus. I told him I was not ready to purchase anothe car and did not want the pressure of having to buy a new car to get something fixed that should be fixed for free. I then called Lexus customer service and noted a complaint. The girl I believe denise told me she was going to look again over the file and ask marc for a customer good faith repair. I called yesterday and left a msg for marc and called Lexus again today. So far I have no response. I was a Lexus fan but this has ruined my day.
Engine design is faulty. While driving vehicle oil becomes very hot and turns into sludge. Engine check light illuminates on dash continuously. Please provide any further information.
