Lexus RX300 owners have reported 119 problems related to transmission failure (under the power train category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
1999 Lexus RX 300 vehicle 99,000 miles in very good repair suddenly stalls due to transmission failure on the freeway. No previous warning. I was very fortunate to "coast" off the highway into a safe area to stop the vehicle. It would no longer move, transmission was reported to be dead by two mechanics. After researching this model there are many reports about transmission failures some causing accidents and injuries. Neither was the case with my incident but it is a disturbing trend.

We owned a 1999 Lexus RX 300 SUV. We recently encountered a complete transmission failure on 11/26/2009 (thanksgiving day) at ~134000 miles while driving to attend a thanksgiving dinner. The car was well-maintained and well-kept since the purchase. The entire maintenance history can be verified & confirmed by Lexus of portland in oregon. We were very surprised that the transmission went out so soon for a Lexus. This is very disappointing. Not only the situation was dangerous and unsafe for my wife & I (we were on a highway) but we later found out that Lexus is charging us $4400 to replace a rebuilt transmission. As I investigate further, sounds like Lexus/Toyota is well-aware of the problem and not offering any compensation to help with the heavy burden replacement cost. We would like to file this complaint as a way to get higher authority to help the affected Lexus owner. Hopefully you can review & investigate into the matter with Lexus/Toyota for us.

During normal driving the transmission failed. The transmission had to be rebuilt at a cost of over $4000. The Lexus dealer service department agrees that there is a design flaw, but the Toyota/Lexus corporation is unwilling to do more than contribute $1000 towards repair, and only if it is repaired at a dealer.
2001 Lexus RX-300 transmission failure (after 142,000 miles) 2nd failure (1st after 142,000 miles) consumer paid for both failures.
My 2000 Lexus Rx300 transmission failed and the Lexus dealer cost $4,500 fix it. My car was there couple month ago for regular maintenance, they said every thing ok, it had the oil change last week. They said this is the transmission part problem even it had the transmission oil change regularly.

Bought my 2002 Lexus Rx300 brand new with regular maintenance done on scheduled. After a few weeks of slow/slippage shifting the transmission failed and had it service/rebuilt by my local mechanic. I found out on an internet Lexus club forum that the transmission is a common problem on the early generation Lexus Rx300 (year 1999-2001) and I am unfortunately over the power train warranty so I took it to my local mechanic to be serviced. I paid $3800+ to have to repaired - what recourse do I have for buying a supposed to be reliable car? thankfully it was not on a highway when the transmission failed but rather on the off ramp of the highway.
Transmission on my 1999 Lexus Rx300 started slipping. We took it into a Lexus dealer and were told to not do anything until the transmission failed, then bring it in. I asked if we should have it serviced or some maintenance to prevent a failure and they advised that it was not worth it. It failed, then the dealer wants $4,200 to fix it. Research shows that this year and model Lexus has transmission problems nationwide and suggests it is a widespread problem. This is a safety issue as well as general mechanical failure.
The transmission has failed in my 2001 Lexus RX 300. I need to have it replaced with a remanufactured transmission.
2001 Lexus RX 300 - transmission failure appears to be common. Mine went out about 1 yr ago. Car wouldn't move at all. Had to have it rebuilt with more dependable parts. I don't have the old parts. The shop I went to said they frequently have them in with this issue.
2002 Lexus RX 300 transmission failed, stuck on NJ turnpike, towed to prestige Lexus in ramsey NJ. Dealer said transmission bad. Have read hundreds and hundreds of premature transmission failures in 1999-2002 Lexus RX 300 vehicles. So far Lexus has not admitted any problems and will look into it. Cost of repair 4000. 00. Still in shop.

I was driving to work on Friday 6-13-09 and stopped at a stop sign. As I attempted to proceed through the intersection the car started to buck violently. I took my foot off of the gas and put the car in neutral and the bucking stopped. I then came to a stop and put the car back into drive and the car began to buck again and I heard a grinding sound and then nothing. My car would not go forward or reverse. The service technician advised me that the transmission fluid was very clean and he could not understand why the transmission failed like this. I was told that I needed to replace the entire transmission and it cost me $4,418. 00.

Transmission completely failed at 101,000. Complete maintenance records available.
2002 Lexus Rx300 transmission failure. The tranny failed at only 150,000 miles. The replacement was $4200. No transmission should fail that soon, and nothing short of a bentley should cost that much for a rebuilt.
This is my second transmission failure in this vehicle. If you read any Lexus owner's blog, you will realize that the early Rx300 models have a seriously high fail rate for transmissions. Most fail around 80k miles. Mine has averaged 70k miles per transmission. Lexus really need to own up to their design flaw.
2001 Rx300 with 135k miles. We suffered a total transmission failure while driving 200 miles from home. Fortunately we were able to pull over to the side of the road and out of traffic. Vehicle was towed to Lexus dealer where the transmission was replaced with factory reconditioned unit.

1999 Lexus RX-300. I have 94,000 miles on it, original owner. Have gotten every scheduled maintenance service on it including 30,000 , 60,000 and 90,000 miles service in October 2008. Now March 2009 and have complete transmission failure at 94,000 miles when I had 92,000 miles on my car for its service in October 2008. Saw all the talk on the internet about thousands of people in same situation and Lexus customer service says they have no idea what I am referring to!.
Lexus Rx300 1999 model complete transmission failure at just over 100k miles. Based on internet comments this is a real problem that should be a recall. Cost to replace is from $3500-4500. On an expensive car like this, it is crazy.
I have a 2003 Lexus Rx300 with 134,000 miles. The transmission failed on 2/20/09. After a couple of days of a slight whine, three lights came on the dashboard. I took it in to my local repair shop. They ran a computer diagnosis and it came back with transmission failure. I purchased the vehicle while still under warranty at 48,000 miles in 2006. I have had the transmission serviced twice at the recommended intervals. It was due for a 3rd service. Internet blogs report that transmission failure is a chronic problem with this vehicle after 70,000 miles. In almost 40 years of driving, I have never had a transmission failure before. I owned a Lexus es300 previously and volvos before that. The Lexus dealer says it is out of warranty. Cost of replacement is quoted at $4200.

Lexus 2001 model Rx300 in excellent condition purchased new with zero miles from Lexus dealer. This all wheel drive vehicle experienced total transmission failure without warning. Transmission type u14f. Vehicle was always dealer serviced and just completed the 85,000 miles service. Transmission is defective, and a chronic problem on all RX models. Dealer would not provide service under 100k extended warranty due to age. Cost of repair $5,500. 00 plus labor & taxes. There should be a class action lawsuit started for these transmission problems.
2002 Lexus Rx300 complete transmission failure at 102k miles. No warning, no problems noted before failure. A new transmission had to be installed.
The transmission failed in my 2000 Lexus rs-300.
I have a 2000 Lexus Rx300 with 124,000 miles on it. The transmission has failed in the car after normal driving conditions. The maintenance manual does not indicate to change the transmission oil in the car, only to check it. I have been on numerous Lexus internet sites which have stated the same problem has occurred to them with the same model and year Lexus.
Transmission failed at 137,000 miles and needs complete replacement.
I am the owner a 1999 Lexus RX 300 that had a transmission failure. Depending on who I talk to it will cost anywhere from $4000 to $6500 to repair the vehicle. I found out since this failure that this is a common problem with this vehicle. My source for this information has been the internet, transmission repair shops and the dealership employees themselves. This a well known problem that has been known for a while. Lexus should do the right thing and recall these vehicles to correct this problem. I should not have to pay for a transmission that has a design flaw. Thank you.
Our transmission failed in the middle of the highway causing our wheels to lock. I spent nearly $4000 to have the transmission replaced like the many Lexus Rx300 owners have had to do. This has not only significantly impacted our wallets but more importantly could have killed my wife and I.
Car began have transmission problems transmission failed in process of having to rebuild/replace transmission.
