Lexus RX330 owners have reported 37 problems related to vehicle speed control (under the vehicle speed control category). The most recently reported issues are listed below.
My 2004 Lexus Rx330 was stopped in a parking lot with my foot on the brake about to get ready to let a passenger leave the vehicle. The car was stationary and not moving. When suddenly the car accelerated to full throttle. Within seconds the car took off and jumped a curb and drove at full throttle. As soon as I realized what was happening, I then pressed hard on the brake and was finally able to stop the car after it drove about 50 ft. I was in shock that this occurred. My head had flung back along with my passenger with terrific force. Once stopped and I was composed, I drove the car off the grassy area it was now on and reluctantly drove it home. Some degree of neck pain later was noticed. There was no floor mat issue or any noticeable obstructions to the accelerator pedal. Later upon inspection of the car there appeared to be some body damage to the car. Not sure where it came from or if we hit anything other then the curb though. The car acted as though it was possessed. Needless to say, I will be looking for another car without drive by wire if they still exist.

I got in the car at 2 p. M. After driving 1/4 mile it would not take off from the stop sign it stalled and lunged forward due to loss of connection when stepping on the gas pedal. I depressed the break and shifted from d to 4 and it began to shake in the front of the bumper. I pulled over, put it in neutral with the parking brake on and my emergency flashers on, and opened the hood. It stopped shaking and I removed the floor mat, which is attached with clips and with my hand, I pushed the gas pedal. It had no rev in the engine, as I would expect. I got back in the car and shifted to r and then with the break off, I shifted to 4. The check engine light was flashing and vsc light as well. I can tell you for certain my car was not overheating when I took it to sears auto center with warning lights vsc and check engine coming on intermittently. If the vehicle overheating was the cause of the damage the temperature gauge on the dash would have indicated that when I brought it to sears. Mike, service advisor at Lexus of roseville stated in an e-mail to me that his technician ¿¿found # 5 cylinder intake valves bent and stuck. #1 cylinder intake valve sticking (will stay open till piston hits and closes it). Suspect vehicle overheated causing valve to stick in guides. My car was not overheating and I think the engine is defective. I had a lkq engine installed amd it was fine for a month before it started sounding like marbles. I think my car is damaged due to a defect. I had just had a ful synthetic oil change two weeks before this incident occurred and put four brand new tires as well. I bought the car with only 101k miles for $23,000 in August 2013 and I still owe $5,000 on my loan. My car had all the service records from Lexus of rockville, proving this car was well maintained by both myself and the previous owner.

I was on the feeder of the freeway and was getting ready to enter the freeway entrance ramp. I pushed on the gas pedal to accelerate, at this time the car sped up on its own beyond the speed that I was attempting to go. I removed my foot from the pedal; however the car kept accelerating. I pushed on the brakes and the car kept accelerating. I had heard about the floor mat causing this problem; so I checked the gas pedal and there was nothing near pedal. The floor mat had not moved everything was in place. I put my foot under the gas pedal and attempted to raise the pedal; this had no effect on the speed. I stomped on the gas pedal a couple of times and the pedal then started responding normally. I tried to recreate the problem several times with no response.
The contact owns a 2005 Lexus Rx330. While driving approximately 2 mph into his driveway, the contact removed his foot from the accelerator pedal in order to depress the brake pedal. The vehicle accelerated on its own and crashed into the house. The contact was uninjured. The vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. The manufacturer was notified. The approximate failure mileage was 74,658.
Vehicle's svc system malfunctions which causes the vehicle's steering to operate erratically-particularly at speeds above 50mph. Please investigate this matter.
Backing car out of garage and accelerator automatically increased high speed. I was unable to stop. Car hit garage door and damaged the garage door, wall, front driver side quarter panel, front bumper. Approx $3600 car damage and $1500 garage damage. Fortunate that no other damage or injuries occurred. This never happened before and was very unexpected. I am now afraid that this may happen again under unexpected circumstances with more severe consequences.
Periodically the brake, abs, vsc, and low pressure light blinks while driving , as soon as the key is turned off then back on the warning lights disappear. Trouble code scanned c 1249, and c 1223 open circuit in stop light switch or abs control fault error. Oxide grease residue on electrical contact points make the brake light switch susceptible to failure. Toyota Lexus had a recall that only covered certain dates while the problem brake light switch failures continued in newer models. Lexus refuses to fix older models saying the problem was fixed after late 2004, which as we all know now is not correct. I would like Lexus /Toyota to replace my brake light switch at no expense to me since it was a assembly error on their part.
The contact owns a 2005 Lexus Rx330. The contact received notification of NHTSA campaign numbers: 11v539000 (engine and engine cooling) and 11v112000 (vehicle speed control) however, the parts to do the repairs were unavailable. The contact stated that the manufacturer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The dealer was contacted Lexus of west kendall, miami, florida and confirmed that the parts were not available for the recall remedy. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue and was not able to confirm when the parts were to become available. The contact had not experienced a failure. Parts distribution disconnect.

While attempting to back slowly out of a parking space, my car went from 0 to at least 40 mph in a matter of seconds and hit a pole across a parking lot. Although I had my foot off the gas, I was attempting to find the brake. The entire incident happened in a matter of seconds. I remember feeling totally out of control of the car. The pole behind me was driven through my SUV to the passenger's seat.
The contact owns a 2004 Lexus RX 330. The contact was driving at 5 mph in a parking lot when there was an abnormal increase in engine rpms and the engine became extremely loud. The contact stated the brakes were depressed when the vehicle independently accelerated and crashed into a stone wall. The contact sustained injuries to her knee. The passenger sustained a minor injury to his tongue. The vehicle was towed to a collision facility. The dealer advised they would not make repairs to the body damage until the vehicle was investigated for the cause of the failure. The contact was awaiting a diagnosis of the failure. The failure and current mileage was 111,000.
I was pulling into a curbside parking place on a residential street with a slight uphill incline. The car slowed almost to a stop because of the incline. I put my foot very lightly on the gas pedal so as to move forward and make room for another car to park behind me. The pedal went all the way to the floor of its own accord and the car lurched forward into the parked car in front of me, causing considerable damage before I was able to stop the car, reverse and park. Police were called but declined to file a report as no one was injured and the damage was not severe. Because I was afraid to drive the car again, I had it towed to the dealer where it was purchased and has been serviced. It is currently being inspected. This is the first and only time of such an occurrence.
Since I bought my car from jm Lexus in margate, FL in 2005, it has had the constant problem of sudden short bursts of acceleration. Another problem with the car is that often times, when I try to speed up, the car continues to drive at the same speed, and doesn't accelerate. I am afraid either one of these problems can cause me to hit someone or be hit by another car. I have reported this problem to the dealership and they inspected it and was told nothing could be done about it. I worked at southeast Toyota when I told one of the employees about the problem and he said it was in the electronic system and that nothing could be done. I did not believe there was no fix for this then and I especially don't believe it now, in light of all the reports of malfunctioning toyotas and Lexuses.
2 to 3 years prior to this accident I was coming to stoplight and the car brake did not work but only for a few second I reported this to my husband and he took it to several mechanics but did not find anything wrong with the vehicle, my husband has owned a auto parts store for 40 years and knows a few qualified mechanics. 3 people was on a freeway about 1/4 mile from off ramp doing about 65 mph, we started to move over to the slower lane as we got to the slower lane I stepped on the brakes to slow down for the off ramp when I felt the brakes were not working, I pumped the brakes several times to make sure I was stepping on the brakes but instead of slowing down the vehicle kept accelerating I depressed the brake pedal as hard as I could and hung on for dear life upon entering the off ramp I struck another vehicle and flipped the car several times. I ended up with a cracked sternum, the passenger broke 3 or 4 of her vertebra, and passenger in the rear seat was fatal. Updated 03/10/10 updated ivoq 09/28/10.
No failure, just apparent stickiness in accelerator. Occasionally, while pulling out from signals, pedal feels as if it is sticking, then will pop loose and car lurches forward.
The contact owns a 2006 Lexus Rx330. The contact had started the vehicle and noticed that the engines rpm's suddenly increased without the contact engaging the accelerator pedal; however, after restarting the vehicle the problem did not occur. The vehicle has not been diagnosed by the dealership. There were no prior warnings. The current and failure mileages were 56300. Updated 03/01/10 updated 06/28/jb.
The contact owns a 2005 Lexus rx30. While entering a parking space she applied pressure to the brake pedal, and then the vehicle accelerated without intention. Consequently, the vehicle crashed into a building. A police report was filed. The vehicle was towed to a collision center. The front end of the vehicle received $9,088 worth of damage. The failure and current mileages were 22,000.
I was on interstate 5 on may 25, 2009 (memorial day) at the speed of 75-80 mph with my whole family in the car. The car's model is Lexus Rx330,2006 model. While I was driving on the leftmost lane, my left wheel went a little bit on the rumble strip. I tried to pull my car back on the lane. It is here that the problem started. My steering started to shake and vibrate and the car stopped to accelerate. When all the cars were going at such a high speed there was nothing I could do. I was unable to steer the car as well as accelerate or even brake for quite a while. Then I tried braking many times and could finally park the car in the emergency in the left lane shoulder. After that we tried calling all the numbers given in the Lexus handbook but no one picked up the phone to help us. After waiting for half an hour or so, my husband collected all his guts and drove the car to nearest gas station. We check the tires and all the pressures etc. But everything looked fine.
I own a RX 330 Lexus and it has a problem with the accelerator. Sometimes it gets stuck at about 3 rpms and it wont come down from there until something lets go of it and then it jerks even though I would be going at a low speed such 25mph. The accelerator feels rigid and no matter how much you push on it the speed doesn't increase until it jerks and lets go. Other times it tends to go faster even though I am not pressing on it, when I brake it doesn't want to stop until I slam on the brakes hard. I can feel that it is like something is stuck and the car does what it wants until it is let go which is when it jerks. I have not had a crash yet, but I am concerned about it.
The contact owns a 2005 Lexus Rx330. He stated that the vehicle hesitated and accelerated momentarily while depressing the acceleration pedal. He also stated that when the vehicle traveled around a curve or bend, it would momentarily accelerate abnormally. The dealer advised him that there were no related complaints and could not duplicate the failure. There were no repairs made to the vehicle. The current and failure mileages were under 15,000. Updated 04/16/10. Updated 07/13/10.
2005 Lexus Rx330 would not stop nor brake as headed downhill in slightly snowy weather at about 25mph. As road curved, I could not slow vehicle and thus started to lose steering control. I attempted to accelerate thinking it wa a forward slide but that didn't change things and vehicle continued to accelerate. So I hit the breaks hard-- no result, no additional control. Vehicle continued for about a block, hit curb, then tree. Totaled vehicle and injury to myself. Assumed at the time the speed was lower but after seeing damage later and getting physical therapy, it clearly had accelerated before hitting the curb-- which did slow it down before hitting the tree. Three of four tires blew out with holes on the sides from force of impact with curb.
The contact owns a 2004 Lexus Rx330. The driver stated that her vehicle would not start. The vehicle has been serviced on a regular basis for routine maintenance. The floor mat clip which was recalled. The vehicle has accelerated for quite some time. While driving approximately 60 mph, she engaged the brakes to slow down the vehicle and it accelerated on it's own. The dealer was notified and they stated that they were unable to repair it since the VIN does not apply to the recall. A crash also occurred while driving 65 mph when the vehicle accelerated. Two passengers were in the vehicle; however, there were no injuries. The failure mileage was 30,000. The current mileage was 50,000.
Unexpected acceleration while in cruise & climbing a hill or overpass. Speed goes from 65 to over 80 . Car jumps & takes off & have to hit brakes to cancel cruise. Occurs 50% of times used . In service dept . 4x nothing found. . Talked to calif. Service headquarters no. Of times & no results . 2006 to present . Service rep never shows up.
: the contact stated while driving the vehicle hesitated intermittently. The dealer determined it was the way the vehicle was driven and could find no problem.
My Lexus accelerated without my foot on the accelerator and hit and destroyed 2 parked unattended cars. Damage to my car was in excess of $6000. I was cited and I appealed to the board of appeals, and found innocent and had my case vacated. I wrote Lexus about this problem on 2-14-10 since it is a Toyota product and no cause has been found for my malfunction, and they have not answered me as yet. I want compensation and am willing to come to a mutually agreeable conclusion, but as yet, no response from Lexus.
My friend (26 year old male) was driving my 2004 Lexus Rx330 at around 9am on christmas eve morning. Witnesses state that he was traveling south on a residential street and crossed a busy 6-lane divided roadway at 80 mph. He continued on the residential street at which time he left the roadway and vaulted across an embankment hitting a block wall. He was killed instantly. Pima county sheriff and medical examiner investigated and could find no reason for the excessive speed or the collision. No drugs or alcohol were found in his system and he had no medical problems. I have no doubt now that I have read other reports that something was mechanically wrong with the Lexus and that caused this fatal accident; updated 003/30/10 updated 06/30/10.
The contact owns a 2005 Lexus Rx330. Whenever he depressed the accelerator pedal there was a three second delay before the vehicle accelerated. This would occur whenever he tried to pass another vehicle or accelerate into traffic. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the software was changed. The Toyota manufacturer was called and they stated that the vehicle was functioning normally. This problem has existed since the vehicle was purchased in March 2005. The failure mileage was 10 miles and the current mileage was 102,000. Updated 11/10/10.
I have had two problems. One being yesterday I came out to my car in the parking lot started up my car and there were no brakes. Had to put car in park to stop car. The brakes were rock hard. They said it was the booster that had to be repaired. The second problem is I had almost 2 accidents when trying to accelerate from a stop sign. I hit the gas and the car doesn't go it lags and then goes. This hesitation is very very serious and has me very worried about driving with kids. I bought this car for the safety features and now I'm scared to drive it. What if my brakes failed on the highway I was on? what if my car lags in front of a truck?.
Supplement to consumer complaint #10091268 Lexus RX 330 transmission/throttle problems. Automatic transmission hestiates, hunts, shifts inconsistently, hangs in between gears, delayes, etc. The throttle delays at the first application of gas and the rate of acceleration surges up and down unevenly. Dealer could not find a problem.
Ongoing intermittent sudden surges when I press lightly on the accelerator. The car will suddenly speed up much faster than the press on the accelerator pedal would warrant. Does not happen all the time. Have complained to the dealer each time since the vehicle was brought in for service, at least 5 times in the 1st 3-4 years. Each time, I was told they could find nothing, and that I just probably was not used to the car.
Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6) I have my dream car, 2004 Lexus Rx330. I have had same trouble. I am afraid of the car. I have an old Ford RV, I drive instead of my beautiful Lexus. People ask why, I tell them I'm afraid of it. It lurches forward, and also jumps back and forth between gears @ 20mph. This is after 5 updates in the computer of the car. I have put 200k miles on my other 5 toyotas, and all went beautifully! then the demon car as I refer to it. I reported it repeatedly, and was told by everyone, including long beach Toyota headquarters, that it was working in the manner it was designed, it was learning how I drive. Horse pucky. I am a retiree of att. I had defensive driving every year to drive their CO. Vehicles. I know how to drive and am very experienced. I also know when there is a bad problem. I have 48k miles on my runaway car. It's only tried to really run away twice, but somehow I got it stopped, I stuck it in neutral, for some unknown reason. Back then no one heard of this "mess". I never complained to Toyota about my cars, because they were wonderful. Then, after saving for 10 yrs, bought my dream car. The killer. I hate it, I am beginning to hate Toyota. It's very disheartening to me, to have the car company I thought so very highly of, is trying to save their [xxx] , by giving America these defective cars. When our hwy patrol officer and his family, was killed, I cried. All these years of saying they will get caught, they will see. Who is they? Toyota, and when they heard about it in 04, hushed it up. I know, if a hwy patrolman can't stop a runaway car, how the [xxx] can the normal guy driving it? someone please listen, someone, please help fix this mess. Shame on you, Toyota! shame on you! dealers, headquarters, employees that lied all these years to us. Shame on you! man up, and tell the truth.
