1 Seat Belt problem of the 2019 Lincoln Navigator

Failure Date: 08/20/2025

I was driving the car at approximately 10 miles/hr (slowly accelerating after stopping at a traffic light), when I heard a loud bang / explosion. This was accompanied by a feeling like I had been struck in the chest. However, there was no collision to the car. I then realized that my seatbelt was tightly cinched and locked around my body, and it had caused the blow to my chest. I was able to pull off the road and stop the car, and I worked my way out of the seatbelt with difficulty by unclasping it. There was a smell of gunpowder in the air, but I confirmed that no collision or accident to my car had occurred. The skin on my chest and left neck were badly bruised by the seatbelt pretensioning. It is clear that the seatbelt pretensioning system inappropriately triggered while I was driving this vehicle. There is a known recall for this car's seat belt pretensioning system, and prior to this incident the restraint system error light was turning on and off since September 2024. I paid for a "repair" of this error, though it continued to occur. When I contacted the Lincoln dealership again, they stated that the part for this recall is not yet available. After this incident occurred, I had my vehicle towed to the Lincoln dealership and contacted Lincoln customer service. They again stated that they could not repair the seatbelt as the part is still not available. When this incident occurred, I was driving my 2 year-old daughter to preschool. I feel lucky that the seatbelt malfunction did not cause a car crash--the inappropriate triggering was shocking, caused bodily harm, and I was barely able to keep control of the car to pull aside safely.

5 Seat Belt problem of the 2019 Lincoln Navigator

Failure Date: 06/26/2025

My husband (age [xxx] ) and I (age [xxx] ) were traveling on, he was driving, [xxx] in atoka, ok on the evening of [xxx], when all of a sudden we heard a loud pop. It sounded like a gun shot. The sound was followed by a smoke smell. He held his composure and was able to pull over, and we learned that it was the seatbelt that was affected, and he had cinch marks on his shirt left by the seatbelt. We then realized the driver’s side seatbelt was “floppy” and wouldn’t retract back. I then called our local Ford dealership in durant, ok to get it in ASAP and was informed to bring it in Monday, June 23, 2025. We drove the car home to durant, ok which is approximately 30 minutes away on a very dangerous stretch of highway after the call. On Monday, I carefully drove it to the dealership to be repaired. I was informed later that day that they were able to repair one recall, the back up camera, but the seatbelt couldn’t be repaired due to a back order on the part (told by kyle the service tech). I emailed red river Ford service manager immediately after that and was sent an email back that had his phone number. I then called him, rick riley, and he told me that he’s showing that the part is actually not even available to get and couldn’t give me an estimated time. I asked if it was possible to get a loaner, this is my personal car and the only car that can hold my family of 6. We were leaving for vacation June 25 and had no way to get to the airport. I called Lincoln concierge to see if they could do anything to get me a loaner, and the representative was no help. She told me she was going to contact red river Ford but never did; I had sent a message asking rick riley if he had been contacted, and he said no. We ended up paying for a driver to safely get us to dfw airport which cost $360. I’ve called Lincoln 2 more times now and keep getting told the part is on back order but no advice on getting a loaner or them buying back the car. I don’t know what else to do. 10 Seat Belt problem of the 2024 Lincoln Navigator

Failure Date: 11/20/2024

On may 26, 2024, I entered into a lease agreement for a Lincoln Navigator vehicle manufactured and warranted by Lincoln motor company. This vehicle subsequently developed multiple serious and dangerous safety defects, including uncontrolled and spontaneous seat inflation, failure of seat pump systems, infotainment system failure including loss of backup camera and safety display systems, unexpected closure of side mirrors while driving, and continued seat movement and mechanical activation after the vehicle was powered off. These defects presented a direct and substantial risk to occupant safety. On multiple occasions, uncontrolled seat inflation physically restrained and trapped an occupant, including a minor child, by causing the seat structure to expand while the seatbelt locking mechanism engaged, restricting the occupant’s ability to exit the seat. These events occurred while the vehicle was in operation, including while traveling on a public freeway, creating an immediate and dangerous safety hazard. Lincoln motor company and galpin Ford were repeatedly notified of these safety defects. On January 6, 2025, the vehicle was delivered to galpin Lincoln, an authorized Lincoln motor company repair facility, for emergency repair due to these ongoing and escalating safety failures. Lincoln motor company retained possession of the vehicle for approximately eighty-three (83) days. During this time, Lincoln motor company admitted in writing that critical seat systems and associated pump mechanisms were not functioning as designed. Lincoln motor company further admitted that no repair remedy existed for certain infotainment and software-related system failures due to lack of available corrective software or engineering solution. Despite these admissions & despite exceeding statutory repair period thresholds, Lincoln motor company failed to repair myriad safety hazards on our Navigator leaving us with an inoperable vehicle.

11 Seat Belt problem of the 2019 Lincoln Navigator

Failure Date: 08/06/2024

Seatbelt pretensioner exploded while driving at 5mph with no collision (exploded for no reason). Caused immediate retraction of seatbelt which caused chest trauma and knocked the wind out of me. Loud explosion in confined space caused ringing ears. Given that I had no idea there were explosives in my vehicle, my military training led me to believe I had been shot. I stopped the vehicle, got out and began accessing myself for a gunshot entry wound. I did have the pretensioner warning light for some time, but had not had it repaired yet because there were no appointments available at my local dealer. I had previously contacted Lincoln customer service to tell them that I could not get an appointment and asked them for help. They offered no assistance other than to give me the names of other dealers. Had this incident happened at a high rate of speed, I am nearly certain that the immediate and unexpected shock and trauma would have caused an accident. These devices, along with Lincoln's inability to provide repair appointments (at least in my location) are a hazard to the public.

19 Seat Belt problem of the 2017 Lincoln Navigator

Failure Date: 08/28/2019

There is no weight sensor in the front passenger seat. There is no notification that the seat belt is not fastened. The air bag does not work unless the seat belt is fastened. My grandchildren's weight is not registered and therefore the air bag will deploy if they are in the passenger front seat and seat belted in. I was told by Lincoln Navigator division at Ford motor company that this is the way the vehicle was designed and remarked that I felt this condition of 1l. No notification that the seat belt is not fastened, 2. That if the seat belt is not fastened, the airbag does not work, 3. That if my grandson is in the passenger seat with seat belt fastened, the air bag will deploy causing him injury or death. They did not seem to care and told me there was nothing they could do about it. Nothing has happened yet but this vehicle and its design is unsafe in my opinion. The dealership says they cannot fix the issue.

20 Seat Belt problem of the 2019 Lincoln Navigator

Failure Date: 04/01/2019

Seatbelt is not recoiling properly. Dealership replaced it, new one is having similar issues. Sat in other black label Navigators and they also had the same issue. When using the cruise control, the brakes are making an odd noise (it makes the same type of sound you hear when getting up from a leather couch) window washers have failed multiple times. I have multiple video's of that driver seats are making a lot of noise (almost like something is loose), dealership had to fix it twice now. Keep in mind this vehicle is brand new, their top of the line model and had less then 10k miles when these issues started. I would be more than willing to meet with someone in person to show them all the issues.

26 Seat Belt problem of the 2004 Lincoln Navigator

Failure Date: 07/20/2012

While driving north on ar hwy 9 a few miles south of malvern, arkansas with my wife in the front passenger seat and my son in the second row directly behind me, a loud bang occurred. In the next moments I realized the side curtain air bags deployed on both sides of the vehicle, a smell like fireworks became immediately apparent, and the driver's side sun visor was destroyed and hanging down directly in front of me at an angle. I was able to maintain control of the vehicle and stay in my lane of the two-lane highway and slowed down. After shortly realizing what happened, I looked for a place to pull over, did so, and took my pocket knife and cut away the side curtain airbags to be able to see out of the side windows and continue our trip north. I found the driver's visor vanity mirror had shattered in pieces in my lap and on the floor, along with other parts from the visor which now hung down at a steep angle. Both the driver's side and passenger side front seat belts were damaged, and the driver's seat belt upper anchor would no longer stay locked in position, sagging to its lowest position by gravity. Later that day I discovered that the map lights and passenger side visor vanity mirror light no longer worked. I took the car to the local Ford dealer near where I was staying, who told me that it (air bag system) was no longer covered by warranty. I then made an appointment with my hometown dealer to further resolve the issue, and also instigated a case with the Lincoln customer relationship center to see if they would help.

27 Seat Belt problem of the 2002 Lincoln Navigator

Failure Date: 12/03/2011

On 12/03/11 when my husband started our 2002 Lincoln Navigator a loud bang happened, my seat belt tightened across my chest so tight it hurt and I couldn't breathe, the car started smoking so bad that my oldest daughter jumped out of the truck because it scared her so bad. The seat belt was so tight it wouldn't come off at first which scared me because the smoke was by the side of my head! now the seat belt won't work and I don't want to use my car without it. In the past year, 2011, my truck keeps blowing fuses on the automatic lights and air bag for the passenger side. I keep replacing the fuse but they only last about a week and then they blow out. Once the fuse is replaced the automatic lights work, the airbag light goes off. But, no sooner do I change it, it blows again. So, I haven't replaced it. In February I have to go for emmissions and I won't pass with this light on. In the last 6 months, my bright lights have turned on by themselves. I thought it only happened when we use the turn signals, but my husband told me it does it all the time. I didn't believe him until three days ago when I hit a bump and they went on. Then, yesterday I was sitting in our running, parked car and the brights just turned on while the car was on and not moving. That really scared me. What kind of electrical problems does this vehicle have? I have done the one recall on my truck for engine fire. Are there more recalls I should know about?.

The failure was more noticeable in the driver's seat because it was used more frequently; however, the passenger side seat belt malfunctioned occasionally. The contact was unsure if the rear seat belts malfunctioned because they were hardly used. She discovered a technical service bulletin, which stated that the manufacturer would correct the issue in future models. In the interim, they wanted to charge the contact $160 to place teflon tape in the retractor. She took the vehicle to the dealer and was informed of the TSB and teflon remedy. The vehicle has not been repaired. The manufacturer could not assist. The current mileage was 43,066 and failure mileage was approximately 35,000. Updated 5/7/09 updated 05/08/09.
