Automatic Transmission problems of the 1997 Mazda 626 - part 1

Transmission light keeps blinking once rpm reaches of 3.

I have a 1997 Mazda 626 2 l 4 cylinder with 137k miles on it. I have had nothing but problems with my transmission cd4e. It has shifted erratically since I bought it in oct. 2006 and now will not shift from 2nd to 3rd gear. It will have to be rebuilt or replaced. The cd4e transmission in this care has a vast record of problems dating back to 1994. Today's transmissions and vehicles should not have this type of problem and will probably force me to buy another car which I can not afford at this time, due to the cost of repairs to the transmission.

We have owned a 4 cylinder 1997 Mazda that has had the transmission replaced twice.

My transmission is not functioning properly.

Transmission in 97 626 Mazda 4cyl locked up when turning cruise control off on interstate causing the front wheels to lock up and sliding the vehicle to a stop the trans is no good now . Should the manufacture be responsible to fix the problem.

Flashing "o/d off" light, rough shifting, jerking, sluggish acceleration nearly resulting in t-bone collision. Incidents too recent for repair actions to be attempted, but consistent with other reports regarding this particular year/make/model.

Failure of automatic transmissions at an early mileage range. Either have to replace or have transmission rebuilt.

I have a 1997 Mazda 626. The transmission needed to be replaced for over $1,000. I was told that Mazda put in bad transmissions in these cars. Mazda should have to pay for all of these transmissions through a recall.

Two months after purchasing a 97 Mazda 626 I had to replace the trans because it was severely slipping,upon inspection of the transmission it was found to be bad. Now after another month after replacing it with a remanufactured unit it fried again,and had to be towed home.

My 1997 626 Mazda started acting like it was having trouble shifting gears (it's an automatic) and soon afterwards, the transmission gave out. I am 51 years old and treat my cars with respect, getting regular checkups from my mechanic and driving with caution. I do not abuse my car at all. This failure came as a surprise to me. I had to have the car towed to my mechanic. He told me that the transmission needs to be replaced. Currently, we are searching for a used transmission.

My 1997 Mazda 626 had a failure of the transmission. The od light kept flashing and the car shifted erratically. The cost to rebuild was $1800. 00. I have read about this problem occurring in many other older Mazda cars as well. The problem first occurred in the summer of 2006. I was forced to put the car up for several months while I saved the money for the repairs. It was repaired in the summer of 2007. The car transmission is again acting erratically. There are many postings on the web that indicate that there is reason to believe that the transmissions in these cars are faulty.

The transmission in my 1997 Mazda 626 has gone out and would not appear to be as a result of any abuse on my part. My daughter had been driving the car when the over drive light started blinking and the motor was revving higher than normal. After visiting a Mazda dealership in ft. Bragg, nc they estimate the cost to be approximately $3,600. 00. After consulting a nationally known transmission repair shop, I have found that these transmissions were defective to begin with in that they were completely undersized for the motors they were attached to. This has been a problem with countless Mazdas I now know and Mazda has not and will not acknowledge the problem. This was an apparent design problem. To have one of their dealerships trying charge an exorbitant price for repairing the defect is slap in the face to the public when another transmission shop can repair it for approximately half of the Mazdas price. The problem is so bad, I understand, that no one will install a used transmission because the used ones are just as bad. You have to repair the one you have unless you want to be extorted into buying a new one from a dealership that is still undersized for its primary use. I strongly believe that Mazda is well aware of this problem and is doing its best to hide it. Given the number of complaints I've witnessed on various websites and forums etc. . It is quite obvious that Mazda needs to be called on the carpet for selling known defective machinery. Its amazing how most of these failures occur just outside of warranty. I realize that I may not be entitled to any type of compensation for my car's problem given its mileage, but I would appreciate if someone could force Mazda to reconcile its marketing of defective products to help someone else from having to deal with this type of business mentality.

I own a 1997 Mazda 626 lx and it has a manufacturer defect in the transmission. I take great pre-maintenance and only have 69,000 miles on the car and the transmission is defected and not functioning properly.

I bought a used 1997 626dx in 2000. And have had problems from the trans any sense. One month after I brought the car I needed a new trans, the dealership replace it. After the dealership replaced the trans, I continued to have what seem to be problems, the trans would hesitate or shift hard. The mechanics could not find a problem. After about 2 or 3 years of these I gave up. Then in Dec. 2005 I broke down do to a rusted line leading to the trans that cost me $325. 00. Now I'm broke down again and it will cost $2400. 00 to $2500. 00 for an overhaul trans. That I do not have. People tell you to keep up on the maintenance of your vehicle as I have and now I need a trans without warning. I believe is crazy. For a car to need 3 trans in less then 9 yrs.

The repair personnel rebuilt the transmission and the vehicle operated normally. The vehicle had the same problem again. The over drive light illuminated and the vehicle stalled. The vehicle is awaiting tow into the transmission repair shop for inspection and repair.

Driving and car began to jerk over time. Eventually, car has lead to problems going in reverse (must gas to 4000 rpm's to back up).

Od light blinking on 1997 Mazda 626 lx. Told need new transmission?.

I bought a Mazda 626 brand new from the dealer. After a yeah I took the car to a dealer 3 times because I felt shifting problem with the tranny. The dealer told me that there is nothing with the car. At 95k mile my tranny went and I called the Mazda, they told me im lucky to have it for that long. They will not do anything about it because its a problem that I caused. They didn't even look the record to the dealer or have it checked.

Lemon - this car has had problems since I bought it. Everything from transmission to computer to timing belts to power steering problems. At about 70,000 miles I had it fixed again under warranty and since then I've had to pay for all repairs. Last year it was the radiator I guess things wear out but it took Mazda 2 tries to fix it. This year I got a check engine light for something called the idol air control valve and the power steering something or other. This sounds familiar and the symptoms are something I've experienced before. After replacing the idol air control valve it the problem didn't go away and I was told it would cost 3500 for a new transmission. I made the mistake of trying to fix it. I took it to aamco and I feel really bad now because after 3 tries they still haven't been able to fix the problem. They still have the car and I have no idea when it will be fixed not to mention it's cost a lot more than I expected to fix.

97 Mazda 626 at the local Mazda/Dodge dealer in jupiter FL just quoted me $3200 to put in an already rebuilt transmission because they do not rebuild transmissions and the one I currently have is gone. From what I have researched on the web this is an on going problem between Mazda & the transmission that Ford installs for the 626 a cd4e. My engine light has been on since the early on and even the dealer could not figure out how to turn it off. My wife and are original owners and I have all the service records of this vehicle. I feel this is a major problem that Mazda must address with the long list of 626 owners and their transmission problems.

The transmission acts up switching from 1st to 2nd gear. It goes into high rpm and then jerks into 2nd gear. After driving for a little while, the o/d (overdrive) light begins to flash and it only turns off if the car is turned off. A mechanic has looked at it and says that it is the transmission acting inconsistently.

December 2004-January 2005- 1. Car overheats constantly 2. The transmission overheated the car and caused complications with the water pump, computer 3. Replaced all items; transmission rebuilt cost to fix $3200. 00 couldn't afford to just junk the car, as I had purchased it for $5200 the summer before. So I had to fix it. Within a week of getting the car back, it blew a radiator hose.

Flashing "o/d off" light indicates failing transmission.

While driving,without warning the over drive light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. The vehicle start shifting erratic the driver was able to maintain control of the vehicle and drove it to the dealer. The mechanic placed the vehicle on a diagnostic. The mechanic informed the driver that the transmission needed replacement. Please fill in additional information.

1997 Mazda 626 lx 4 dr automatic transmission.

I was driving my 1997 Mazda 626 when all of a sudden, the transmission started shifting hard and acting weird. This was the car's 2nd transmission it had replaced. I fixed the problem by buying a new radiator and an auxiliary cooler because the transmission had overheated.

Transmission problem a week after I bough the vehicle. Vehicles transmission was rebuit over 5 times within 10k miles.

While driving at 45 mph over drive sensor light came on . As a result the vehicle lost complete power. No impact reported. Dealer stated transmission failed.

When driving for approximately 2-4 hours the od off light started flashing. I've researched this incident and apparently the transmission gets too hot frequently resulting in costly repair! I had to drive back home after deciding not to continue my vacation and every 2 hours stopped to let the car cool because light ( od off) started to flash.

The automatic transmission had to be replaced after only 57000 miles back in 2004. Since the warranty had expired I had to spend $2200 out of my pocket. I've been researching this problem for a while now and have noticed that 1000's of these 1997 Mazda 626 cars have had similar problems. Why hasn't the NHTSA forced Mazda to issue a recall or at least have them reimburse car owners?.

I have some problem about my car. Mazda 626 1997 automatic. Like everyone else,the transmission went down at 95,822 miles. I've found out that that problem happens to every 626 Mazda. They [Mazda] have to do something about this. I'm just only student from thailand. I don't have that much money to fix it. {2000-3000$}. My car is not worth that much. Please help me tell them {Mazda} to do something.

I purchased a 1997 Mazda 626 in Jan of 2004. Took it on its first road trip in June. Went to pass another driver and the light started flashing, car started jerking. I limped back home without having to do a lot of major work. Consquences: towing, cancelled trip, repair costs, time lost. I'm working on saving the money to have the transmission rebuilt. I went to research the issue & found literally hundreds of complaints dealing with Mazda 626 transmissions. But no response from Mazda.

Repeated transmission and motor mount problems /axles too.
