1 Seats problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 02/11/2026

I noticed smoke filling the inside of my car. I looked over at the passenger seat, and my coat was on fire. I poured my drink on it, pulled over, and threw the coat out of the car. I saw a large hole in the lumbar area of the passenger seat, and it was glowing red and putting out a lot of heat. The seat heater was on, so I immediately turned it off. It was obvious that the fire has started inside the seat, and there was no other fire source in car--ie. Lit cigarette, lighter, etc. If someone had been sitting there, they would have serious burns. The seat will need to be replaced.

2 Seats problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/31/2026

Leather heated seats . . Safety put at risks because I suffered burns on my bottom (butt) from the driver seat getting too hot to the point where it burned the seat itself as well , and made a brown burn mark on the seat … both of my cheeks got burned . . This can in the long run cause skin damage and worse case scenario cancer. No it hasn’t been inspected no warning lamps.

3 Seats problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 12/16/2025

I was driving down the road and started smelling smoke then looked over and my passenger seat was in flames.

4 Seats problem of the 2017 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 11/07/2025

During a one-hour car ride, the front passenger side seat heater burned a hole through the seat, damaging my wife's skirt and leaving a hole in the upholstery. The overheating definitely originated within the seat. We immediately turned the seat heater off and have not used it since. It could have started a fire, which is very scary, or burned my wife, which is a serious safety risk. This issue has been mentioned by other Mazda owners, but I cannot find any recall reports. There were no warnings prior to the burning. The component is being taken to the dealership to be examined today.

5 Seats problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 10/29/2025

The front passenger seat heating system caught fire and burned through the fabric and my dog's seat. The fumes made me and my dog nauseous. I had to swerve across the highway and stop on the shoulder to extinguish the seat fire/burn. The fuse was pulled for safety. The seat is in storage for inspection. Mazda will be contacted.

6 Seats problem of the 2024 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 09/22/2025

2024 Mazda Cx-5 turbo premium I am writing to express my disappointment with a recent purchase: the 2024 Mazda Cx-5 turbo premium. While I appreciate the vehicle’s performance and overall design, I am extremely dissatisfied with the comfort level of the front seats. The seats feel incredibly stiff—almost like sitting on bricks—and lack any meaningful support. This has made even short drives uncomfortable and long trips nearly unbearable. I expected a premium model to offer a higher standard of comfort, especially in such a critical area as seating. I kindly request that Mazda address this issue. Whether through a seat replacement, upgrade, or another form of resolution, I believe this matter deserves attention. I chose Mazda for its reputation for quality and driver-focused design, and I hope to see that reflected in how this concern is handled. Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to your response.

7 Seats problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 02/21/2025

The front passenger seat warmer caught fire as I was driving the vehicle. No fuse tripped or anything when it over heated. The seat not just melted but actually caught fire and filled the vehicle with smoke.

8 Seats problem of the 2023 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 02/19/2025

Small amount of weight such as keys or phone is triggering the occupant sensor in the front passenger seat. This issue just started and I am finding a lot of complaints regarding this.

9 Seats problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/18/2024

The component that failed was the passenger's seat belt. It became unattached from the seat. It appears as though the bolt that holds the fastener to the seat failed. The vehicle is currently available for inspection as it has not been taken to be repaired, yet. Safety was put at risk by the seatbelt not being attached to the seat which could have resulted in serious bodily injury in the event of an accident. The problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center, yet. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by police, insurance, or manufacturer. No warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem appeared prior to failure.

10 Seats problem of the 2020 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 04/06/2024

The front seats, both electric and manual powered are rocking back and forth. Upon acceleration both seats will slightly rock backwards and then upon applying the brakes they will rock forward. It's almost like whatever is holding the seats still has a defected part or a defect somewhere else. This concerns me as a safety issue, if something were to happen and if I got into an accident, aren't the seats supposed to be secured and not have any slack or rocking in them? this has happened before on my driver side seat when I had a Mazda service technician look at it he confirmed it needed to be repaired. For a whole replacement seat was estimated around $4,000. 00. I was fortunate at the time to where my bumper to bumper warranty helped cover some of the cost, Mazda agreed to pay for the "parts" to fix the issue and I paid for the labor, only because I was slightly over the 36,000 mile warranty that comes with Mazda. Since the repair I was told it wasnt going to be 100% and I would still have some rocking but it wasnt as bad, that occurred around the year 2022. Now, when I have a passenger the same thing occurs. Unfortunately, I'm no longer in my bumper to bumper warranty and quite frankly this seems like a safety risk that Mazda is aware of.

11 Seats problem of the 2024 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 03/29/2024

Since the day we purchased our new 2024 Mazda Cx-5, two issues have become apparent. Firstly, there is a clicking noise emanating from the rear passenger seats behind the driver whenever the vehicle is in motion. Secondly, there is a noticeable rumbling in the drivetrain during idle or stop-and-go traffic. I have visited the Mazda showroom twice regarding the seat back noise. Together with a Mazda technician, we determined that the rear passenger seat indeed makes a clicking noise even after being properly latched. We tested several new cars on the dealer lot and found that all of them exhibit this noise. It is quite bothersome while driving, and I request Mazda's immediate attention to resolve this issue by fixing the latch bracket to securely hold the seat and eliminate the noise. The drivetrain rumbling has become increasingly noticeable as I use the car daily for work and errands. It feels like the vehicle is being shaken underneath me when stopped at a red light, stop sign, or while parked and idling. I would greatly appreciate your assistance in addressing these concerns at your earliest convenience.

12 Seats problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 02/01/2024

I recently purchased this used vehicle. Right away, I noticed that when I used the recline lever, it didn't stop when removing my hand from it. I had to push the lever back to the middle position to stop it. I thought this was annoying, but didn't think much of it. On Thursday 2/1/24 I stopped at a gas station, went inside, and when I came back out the seat was fully reclined. It was so far back that it was lodged in the car seat behind the drivers seat. I tried to move the back up but it wouldn't come back up. The seat would move forward and back, but the recline level didn't work. I drove to my next destination with the seat all the way back. Then I turned the car off and on several times before it would go back up. I then picked up my kids, went to the grocery store and came back home. I turned the car off and went to the way back to get my groceries out, while my kids were still unbuckling. As I was in the back I heard them both start screaming. I ran back around and the drivers side seat was leaned at the way back, with my 6 year old trapped and the headrest part crushing her throat and chest. Thankfully, I was able to move it back up. If it hadn't worked to move up, like just a few hours previously, I don't know what I would have done but it would have been horrible. My daughter was screaming and crying and in a lot of pain. Her throat and chest were red and scratched. It appears that when I get out of the car my leg may slightly touch the recline button, and then it doesn't stop moving. This is incredibly dangerous. I looked it up online and found a couple other reports about it, including one about a baby trapped in a car seat. I can't believe there wasn't a recall. I took it to the dealer I bought it from, and it did continue to do the same thing. They are looking into ordering a new part. In the meantime it is unplugged underneath the seat, so it can't move. That brings on a dash light with the airbags, so I'm not sure if it means my airbag won't work.

13 Seats problem of the 2017 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 01/03/2024

While driving my driver airbag warning light started blinking. When I took it to the dealership to be inspected they said the sensor for the driver airbag is in the seat cushion and was not getting enough power for it to turn on, therefore if the light is blinking the airbag is disabled and I would need to replace the entire seat cushion to fix this issue. If the airbag is disabled then I could be seriously injured in the event of an accident when the airbag does not deploy.

14 Seats problem of the 2019 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 10/26/2023

We were at a stop light and we were rear ended by a Lexus SUV. We're assuming she was going 45mph + but we're not too sure yet. I couldn't figure out why myself, the drive of the car that was hit, had such a horrendous neck ache after being hit. I turned around & saw that my headrest had been completely ripped out of the seat itself, providing no support for my head and/or neck on impact. I can't find any information of if this is on purpose, as a safety feature, or if the headrest failed.

15 Seats problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 07/19/2023

2016 Mazda Cx-5 passenger seat belt warning light and alarm go on when unoccupied and the “airbag off” light turned off (supposed to light up if the seat is unoccupied).

17 Seats problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 11/20/2021

Front passenger seat caught fire when seat warmers were on. I was travelling in a rural area in alaska when I had to stop because my passenger caught fire on her jacket.

18 Seats problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 11/19/2021

While driving on a remote highway the seat heating was on on both the driver and passenger seat. After a while it felt way ti hot and smelled like something burning and found the passenger jacket (that was taken off and left behind his back to be extensively burnt. We stopped and checked the seat. We found a big hole and the seat was damaged as well as the 300 dls coat. Plus the risk of having burns I. The passenger back, which was only protected by the cost and other layers of clothing.

19 Seats problem of the 2018 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 07/02/2021

My husband (driver) and I (front passenger) were in my 2018 Mazda Cx-5 touring and were stopped in traffic on the interstate due to construction. While completely stopped, we were rear-ended by a car traveling at 55-60+ miles per hour (the car did not brake at all before hitting us). Both of our seat backs failed upon impact and went all the way back, with the headrests flying out of both seats. Thankfully no passengers or pets were in the back seat when this happened, but this is a serious safety concern. Attached are photos of the inside of the car in the state it was in after the crash.

20 Seats problem of the 2019 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/10/2021

The "passenger air bag is not active for passenger' warning light was constanstly showing in the dash panel even when nobody was sitting in the passenger seat nor any object was sitting on the seat. The problem was "solved" by the dealer under the car's warranty. They said something about dirty contacts in the seat wiring. Now the warning light is back and my SUV's warranty period is over.

21 Seats problem of the 2015 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 03/06/2021

The contact’s daughter owns a 2015 Mazda Cx-5. The contact stated that the front driver’s seat was previously moved in a forward; however, when her son attempted to move the seat backward so he could drive the vehicle, the seat remained stuck in a forward position. Rear passenger seat rest behind driver seat is rattling and does not lock tight. This happens when passenger is seated.

23 Seats problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 11/20/2020

Several months now, I'm having to turn my car back on to turn the radio off and completely shut the car down. This has been going on since the summer of this year. I have to crank it up, put it out of park into drive, and put it back in drive. After that, it turns off. I have push to start and had the car for four years pre-owned. Yesterday, my sister and I were stranded because my car didn't start. The dealership said it was the air intake oxygen sensor. They replaced it plus they put in a new car battery. My husband and I thought it was weird, but now I'm wondering if the car itself is completely shutting down when I turn it off. Now, this is making me scared to drive the car. The repair cost me 490 something.

24 Seats problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 07/27/2020

When the upper portion of the driver's seat is left alone overnight, it switches positions by the next morning (ie the upper seat is always back further than where it was left the prior evening - so it happens overnight). This seat is electric, not manual. When this occurs, the vehicle is sitting and not running. This has happened multiple times (over 20 times).

25 Seats problem of the 2017 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 06/05/2020

Drivers seat feels like springs or coils pushing on my tail bone and lumps that hurt thigh part of leg. Feels like something could be loose as the lumps go from tail bone, whole bottom like a bar across seat to thighs to just tail bone. This is there all the time from just getting into car and gets worse because it really is pushing on bottom. Seems like seating coil or frame could be problem. I did return to dealer but no one there could feel it. It is still under warranty. No pictures as not visible happens only when seating on it. This problem could cause injury to my spine/back. I.

26 Seats problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 10/26/2019

Vehicle was t-boned by another vehicle that was traveling 40mph. Both front seats are now loose, and have been for some time. Insurance refused to cover seat replacement during repairs in fear of going above the “totaled” threshold and it being a total loss. Now we are concerned about the safety of our vehicle, and we are scared to drive it on major highways where the risk of accidents are higher.

27 Seats problem of the 2014 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 10/08/2019

The driver's seat automatic front-to-back adjustment became abruptly non-functional on the left side, making it impossible to adjust the seat to achieve a safe driving position. This was noted while the car was parked. No accident had occurred and no debris was noted in the track. The dealer (nelson Mazda cool springs) noted that the bolts/nuts were completely broken. Defect seems similar to the defect described with Mazda, 2, 3 and 6 drivers seats recalled in 2017.

28 Seats problem of the 2016 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 08/02/2019

Tl the contact owns a 2016 Mazda Cx-5. The contact stated that the driver's seat would not adjust and failed to operate as needed. The contact took the vehicle to russ darrow Mazda of madison (5234 high crossing blvd, madison, WI 53718, 888-613-7513) where she was provided a repair estimate. The contact refused to pay for a replacement and the seat remained unrepaired. The manufacturer was not notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 70,000.

29 Seats problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 11/11/2018

The passenger seat air bag sensor failed and it cost me 1,000. 00 to repair ,replace sensor car is less than 5years old. Also the paint clear coat has deteriorated badly dealer says nothing they can do about the paint.

30 Seats problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 03/02/2018

Since about 2014 when I leave my vehicle and return my drivers seat will have reclined all the way back. For a few years it would take a few seconds to return upright but as of the last 3 weeks, it has been happening frequently and now it takes a long time for it to return upright. I can still move the seat forward and back. I will push the button several times for the seat to move up but it will not so I am driving with no back support which is very uncomfortable on my back. It's difficult to drive with no back support, it's excruciating on my back and makes driving uncomfortable. I am afraid for my life when driving with no back support. If I am involved in an accident my back will have no support. The seat will not return forward for 30 to 40 minutes. I am afraid to travel long distance now and this is happening several times a day and on a daily basis as opposed to several years ago when it happened 5 to 6 times a year. When it first happened in 2014, I felt this should be a recall. Over time, this has gotten very dangerous and worst. I read on the internet where a lady who also had a Mazda cx 5 said her baby was in a car seat behind the drivers seat and the seat reclined and trapped her baby. That incident alone should make the drivers repair a recall. I hope no one gets paralyzed d or killed from this.

31 Seats problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 12/22/2017

While in motion, the motorized driver seat moves up, back, and forward even though nothing is touching the movement lever. After turning the vehicle off, the driver seat intermittently fully reclines on its own. This has been an ongoing issue that has not been properly addressed by Mazda's own service center.

32 Seats problem of the 2013 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 03/02/2016

The power driver's seat reclines suddenly while driving. Will go from original position to completely laid back without stopping. I can't let anyone talk sit behind me for fear of crushing their knees or legs. Also happens after exiting the vehicle. Will walk back to car to find the seat fully reclined. This happens almost every time I drive the car but especially on days when running errands and in and out of car multiple times. Car also hesitates when engine is "cold". Sudden losses of power while driving. Car just seems to not want to accelerate at times.

33 Seats problem of the 2014 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 10/06/2015

Driver side seat started getting hot while driving but switch was not on. Had to stop car and wait for seat to cool off. This has happened 2 times so far. Dealer said they could not find anything wrong with the car.

34 Seats problem of the 2015 Mazda CX-5

Failure Date: 08/15/2015

Several times now, after shutting the vehicle off, exiting and upon re-entry on the drivers side, I have found the drivers seat completely reclined all the way back. I bought the vehicle brand new with 6 miles on it in illinois may of 2014, and the first incident occurred when we had less than 600 miles on it. I took it to the dealership and was told there was nothing they could do because they "could not replicate it". This happened a few times, then nothing. I drove the car to florida, and had the same issue when I came out to the car the next morning and the seat was reclined all the way back. I took it to the Mazda dealership down there and was told the same thing, that "they could not find anything wrong, and could not get it to duplicate". I was detailing my car this past weekend, sitting in the drivers seat with the car off. I was cleaning the windshield and had no idea that the seat had completely reclined while I was sitting in it! my leg was no where near the side where the adjustments are. Scary that I didn't even hear the motor sound as it reclined and it was all the way back. I am short and have noticed that when I exit out the drivers side, it seems the edge of the drivers seat pushes down on the controls or something, because I can hear it click, although I don't see the seat move. I think it's poor placement of the motor inside the drivers seat. This could pose a potential hazard if one was driving. I saw there was a complaint from one other consumer that was driving when their seat folded forward. This should be looked into!.
