1 Brake Master Cylinder problem

Failure Date: 10/18/2013

On Friday, October 18th 2013 I was involved in a near accident on my way home from work on interstate 99 off the 17th street exit near altoona PA. The brake system failed as I tried to come to a stop on the exit ramp. I placed my foot on the brake pedal and noticed I was not stopping. I could hear a hissing/air sound when I pressed down on the brake pedal. I had to pump the brakes, gear the car down in manual, and swerve off the road to avoid crashing into the car that was stopped in front of me. No dash lights were on giving me no warning that there was anything wrong with the brake system in the vehicle. Ii took my vehicle to the local Mazda dealer and found out that the cause of the brake failure was a leaky master cylinder and that ruined the brake booster. I brought my car to my local dealer in good faith to see if Mazda would replace the parts or at least provide the parts to fix the car since there was a prior investigation into the faulty master cylinders. I then was informed by the service department that their Mazda representative has not heard of any investigations into the faulty master cylinders. So I contacted Mazda directly via the customer service number. I spoke with a [xxx] and my complaint was filed with Mazda documentation number 149440377. I was then informed that Mazda was not willing to replace the parts needed to fix the car as the dealer's service department said the car was unsafe to drive. Total cost to fix the vehicle was $2300. This vehicle needs recalled and the faulty master cylinders need to be replaced by Mazda before someone get killed. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
