1 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 03/08/2026

The liftgate (trunk) opens sporadically. The system keeps trying to open the truck and it's causing a parasitic drain on my battery. I was stranded 2 hours from my home due to this. My trunk would sporadically beep three times, that is the only warning I received. There are safety recalls for other year of Mazda cx-9 but not my specific even though I am having the same issue.

Passenger seat heater either had a grounding issue or shorted out, causing to seat to start smoldering and catching fire, destroying the seat. There has been recalls and lawsuits for this specific issue on this model in other years, but not for this model year.

3 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 09/15/2025

The contact owns a 2019 Mazda cx-9. The contact stated that a state inspection was performed on the windshield for cracks. The contact stated that while driving in the rain, the front windshield wipers turned on independently with the switch in the off position. The contact was unable to turn off the windshield wipers. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. When the vehicle was restarted, the front windshield wipers had turned off. The contact stated that the failure persisted and worsened. The contact stated that occasionally the windshield wipers failed to turn off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, no cause for the failure was found. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact purchased and replaced a sensor. Upon investigation, the contact became aware that the on and off switch for the front windshield wipers related to the sensor located on the front windshield. The contact stated that the sensor controlled the on and off switch and failed to function as intended. The contact stated that the oem windshield provided protection against the sensor malfunctioning; however, if the front windshield was replaced with a non-oem windshield, the windshield wipers would fail to operate as designed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 56,199.

5 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 09/07/2025

[xxx] 2018 Mazda cx-9 grand touring 89014 miles date: 9/11/2025 Mazda north american operations attn: customer experience center 7755 irvine center drive irvine, CA 92618 USA subject: formal complaint regarding safety and technical issue – 2018 Mazda cx-9 dear Mazda customer experience team, I am writing to formally lodge a complaint regarding a serious safety and technical issue I have experienced with my 2018 Mazda cx-9. After a recent inspection conducted by Mazda koch 33, it was brought to my attention that the engine wiring harness is defective and may potentially cause a fire or result in burns, posing a severe safety risk to me, my passengers, and others on the road. This issue is deeply concerning and unacceptable, especially considering Mazda’s reputation for reliability and safety. A fault in the engine wiring harness, particularly one that has the potential to ignite or burn, should be treated with the utmost urgency. It is troubling that such a critical component could present such danger. My vehicle has been serviced and maintained regularly, and I was not made aware of any recall or technical service bulletin that addressed this defect until the inspection. Given the nature of the defect, I believe this may be a manufacturer defect, and I request that Mazda: immediately investigate and confirm whether this issue falls under an existing recall or known defect. Take full responsibility for replacing or repairing the affected wiring harness at no cost to me. Provide assurances in writing that my vehicle is safe to operate. Offer compensation or a loaner vehicle if the repair process renders my vehicle unusable for any period of time. Please consider this a formal request for immediate corrective action. I expect a prompt response within 10 business days of the date of this letter. If I do not receive a satisfactory resolution, I will be compelled to escalate this matter further through consumer protection agencies, such as the information redacted pursuant to the freedom of informati.

6 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 08/10/2025

I am submitting this recall request because my vehicle has experienced repeated incidents of a serious safety issue. While driving—most often on the highway—a warning appears that says “Smart system brake malfunction. ” immediately after, the car begins braking on its own without driver input. This has happened multiple times and, based on online reports, it appears to be affecting many Mazda vehicles across different models and years. Each time, I have been forced to pull over, turn off the car, and restart it to temporarily resolve the issue. This is extremely dangerous, especially at highway speeds, as it creates a high risk of rear-end collisions and sudden loss of vehicle control. When reported to Mazda, the concern was dismissed as a “sensor issue,” but the repeated nature and widespread reports suggest a potential systemic defect that requires urgent investigation and recall.

7 Electrical System problem of the 2023 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 03/30/2025

Starting [xxx], through [xxx], we began receiving multiple "critical vehicle malfunction" alerts (46 alert messages)via the Mazda app, including "parking brake malfunction" and "electric parking brake malfunction. " during this time, the vehicle experienced delayed starts and eventually required a jump-start. We brought it to the dealership multiple times to show the messages, before our 3-year/36,000-mile b2b warranty expired, but the issues were dismissed until the battery was finally replaced. At just over 36,000 miles (currently 39,646), a new issue emerged a “thud” sound from the steering wheel. The dealer diagnosed it as a failed u-joint shaft, which was deemed non-serviceable and not covered under warranty. I inquired about potential causes or prevention—no clear answer was known. I found relevant NHTSA tsbs (06-001/20 & 06-001/24) related to steering issues and escalated to Mazda USA. Mazda agreed to cover 50% as a goodwill gesture, leaving me to pay about $500. Two weeks later, the part arrived and was installed—but it did not fix the issue. The dealership now says it’s a failed bearing within the electric power steering (eps) unit, which requires complete replacement at a cost of over $2,000. Only one part is available in the u. S. , with another two-week wait. The original (misdiagnosed) part was already sent back to Mazda. My out-of-pocket cost is now $1,151 and rising. Given the early warning alerts, misdiagnoses, and the fact that eps controls several safety-critical functions (steering, cruise, lane assist, etc. ), I believe this is a fundamental system failure that should be fully covered under warranty or as a safety-related goodwill repair. I respectfully request that Mazda assume full financial responsibility for the replacement and any related work. Thank you for your consideration. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

8 Electrical System problem of the 2020 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 03/01/2025

The information screen is getting 'spider cracks" spreading across the face and turning opaque making the information unreadable. Mazda is apparently aware of this defect and issued a TSB for earlier models. Dealers were unhelpful and quoted $1000 - $3000 to repair depending on the VIN.

10 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 06/01/2024

Smart city break malfunction warning light appears while driving. Simultaneously the tire pressure warning appears. Also, at the same time, the temperature reads -20 to -40 degrees. Yes, vehicle is available for inspection. Fearful that car could randomly break while driving putting myself and family in danger since there is a malfunction. Mazda service center says the problem can’t be reproduced so there’s nothing they can do. The problem seems to appear when the outside temperature is 60 degrees fahrenheit or higher.

11 Electrical System problem of the 2020 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 05/29/2024

Vehicle randomly displays "Smart brake system malfunction," "forward Smart city brake malfunction" and " front radar system malfunction. " this has been going on for at least a year. I will be driving on a highway, trying to accelerate and these messages will pop up. I'm not able to accelerate when these messages pop up and I have to turn on my hazard lights and pull over to the side of the road. The only thing that clears these warnings are for me to completely shut down my car and restart it. Luckily I have been able to get over to the side of the road on the highway without an accident, but these warning lights pop up when it's sunny out and there is no reason for the car to act the way it does. I took my car to the dealer the first time it happened and paid several hundred dollars for them to tell me that they don't know why it happened. There are several forums posted online with people having the same issues. Online posts say to make sure the sensors are clean and that the malfunction can activate if it's too hot, rainy, snowing or foggy? in my experience, it has happened only when it has been sunny. When the system decides to malfunction, the car will not accelerate, and it could make it easier for the car to be hit by another car. It's like the car just shuts down.

12 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 04/16/2024

1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? the entire electrical system is malfunctioning. All dashboard service lights (check engine, abs, etc. ) illuminate simultaneously, causing the vehicle to stutter and shut off while driving. The vehicle is available for inspection. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? this issue has resulted in a dangerous situation, particularly when the vehicle lost power on the highway with my young children aboard. This sudden loss of control could have led to a severe accident. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Mazda’s service department has not been able to reproduce the problem despite multiple visits. I have provided video evidence, but no conclusive diagnosis or resolution has been achieved. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? Mazda’s authorized technicians have inspected the vehicle several times, but no substantial action has been taken. The vehicle has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? all dashboard lights come on simultaneously without prior warning. The symptoms have been random and intermittent over the past few months. Given the ongoing risk, I request an immediate replacement of my vehicle. Please confirm receipt of this complaint and provide a plan for replacement. Thank you for your prompt attention.

15 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 09/19/2023

As I am accelerating to merge onto the highway from an on-ramp, while the gas pedal is depressed, I will get a series of sensor alerts simultaneously (city brake malfunction, park assist malfunction, lane assist malfunction, etc. ) and my gas pedal becomes non-functional at 60-70mph. It is terrifying especially when there is other traffic around my vehicle. This exact issue has happened 6 times within the past 12-18 months at seemingly random intervals but always when I am accelerating onto the highway at 50-70mph. I typically pull off to the side of the highway and turn off the vehicle. After letting it sit off for ~30 seconds, I turn the vehicle back on and all of the sensor alerts have cleared and the vehicle functions properly including the gas pedal and I am able to rejoin the highway. I took the car to the Mazda dealership in my state of vermont a few months ago to have them diagnose and address the problem. They had never heard of this issue and were unable to find the root cause or fix it. Please help, this is dangerous!.

16 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 08/04/2023

There is a recall for Mazda 2016-2017 infotainment screens where they will show signs of cracking under the plastic and the screen will reboot. I have a 2018 cx-9 and Mazda corporate acknowledged the issue but only offered 15% of the price of a replacement part instead of replacing it. They said my VIN was not part of the original recall. I informed them this was a safety concern and then did not care. Case number - 001097691.

17 Electrical System problem of the 2020 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 05/14/2023

We were on the freeway and all of a sudden it stopped accelerating and the engine light, sensor light, and sensor warning came on. We could not accelerate, that became disabled and we had to pull over. My husband said our fluid levels were normal and he checked them all in the shoulder of the freeway. We turned the vehicle off then on again and all lights went away and we continued on. This is a safety hazard because the car would not accelerate while we were going 60 mph on the freeway. I quickly took a picture of the dash as this was happening so I can take it to the dealer.

18 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 04/14/2023

Vehicle infotainment screen is developing a spider crack which its expanding over time; screen won't be usable in the future and/or may crack completely at any moment. Mazda is aware (service alert no. : sa-008/18 and campaign sspb9) and unwilling to replace/repair the faulty display, car is from 2019 with 45k miles and out of basic warranty . I was told that if regular services (oil change etc. ) were done at the local dealer (Mazda of north miami)they would have probably helped me with this issue. ; last service with local dealer was on 06/2022 for another warranty claim. Very disappointed. Mazda report# 00099443.

19 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 02/24/2023

My vehicle has several issues related to a water pump failure in which the check engine light did not remain on. The vehicle began to over heat and slow down on the highway/ roads despite having my foot on the gas. My vehicle is now at heritage Mazda catonsville and unable to be read by the obd reader which may be related to a weak wiring harness reported by other owners of the Cx9. It also my be why my check engine light is not on despite having an engine issue. Many others have reported a failed water pump which caused cracks in the head which causes the car to over heat and slow down without notice. Despite having thousands of customers with this issue Mazda has yet to issue a recall.

20 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 02/15/2023

The main infotainment display randomly exhibited "spider cracking" which obstructs the view of the material being displayed within the screen. It is unsafe because the operator is unable to see maps, time, locations, controls, reverse cameras, etc. All of these are displayed in the screen and, due to the manufacturing defect, the operator is distracted by straining to see what is displayed behind the cracking. This is a well documented issue plaguing Mazda vehicles. Mazda has admitted it as defective, and are fixing the problem in the 2016-17 models. However, the 2018 model (which has the same screen as the 2016-17) is being refused. The fix needs to be extended to the 2018 model and beyond since it iw clear this it is still a widespread issue. It is well documented that once the cracking starts, it quickly spreads to the entire screen if not repaired, causing even more danger to the operator who will be distracted while attempting to see the display behind the screen.

21 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 02/10/2023

The infotainment system screen has developed several cracks in the upper left-hand corner of the screen. Often time these cracks look like spiderwebs or frost --it's commonly referred to as "spider cracking. " this is the second time my vehicle has had this issue. At the present time, the cracks are contained to the upper left-hand corner of the screen, but they are getting larger. The vehicle has been inspected by my local Mazda dealership and I'm awaiting a resolution. As I understand, this is a known issue with 2016-2017 model years and a TSB has been issued for these years. Mazda should extend the TSB to 2018 and beyond.

22 Electrical System problem of the 2018 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 12/01/2022

Infotainment screen (lcd) of Mazda cx-9 2018 has developed what looks like discoloration/scratching/frost in corner of screen about 2 years ago and it is continuing to spread over last 6 months. This screen is used for hands-free bluetooth/calling (which is now the law in iowa) and the back-up camera which allows for safe backing. If screen is unreadable, these safety functions cannot be performed properly. I take my car into Mazda dealership for maintenance/oil changes and it has never been addressed as an issue, but I'm concerned.

23 Electrical System problem of the 2017 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 10/24/2022

The first sign of an issue was an oil pressure indicator on the dashboard, but upon inspection, the oil levels seemed completely normal. The dashboard light went away shortly after that. A day later, I was on my lunch break and parked my car in a garage for 45 minutes. On the drive there, I did not notice any issues and was able to operate the vehicle fine for the short distance that I drove. When I returned to my parked car, there was a large puddle of oil underneath. I immediately had a mechanic take a look at the car. The mechanic was able to identify a cracked cylinder head, which led to water and coolant entering the engine. He highly suspects that this caused a blown head gasket in the car as well. As well as that, the car's starter, which worked just fine on day 1 of the issue and has never had any problems before, has totally ceased function. If I had not noticed the oil pool underneath the car and driven back to work as usual, it could have caused the engine to seize and create a very dangerous situation for myself and others on the road, including but not limited to the potential of an engine fire with the level of oil lost. The car was up to date on its servicing, including oil changes. Two ase certified mechanics have inspected the vehicle and confirmed the leaked fluids and aforementioned issues. No other professionals inspected the vehicle (insurance representatives, law enforcement, etc. ).

24 Electrical System problem of the 2011 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 08/20/2022

The front door windows no longer work. Most recently, the drivers side back door will not open. The lock is completely jammed - will not open or shut, which is a safety hazard for my child. The plastic parts in this car are failing and putting my family at risk.

25 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 08/13/2022

2019 Mazda cx-9 gt infotainment screen is spidering / cracking in the upper right-hand corner making it difficult to see information on the screen. This appears to be an ongoing problem with the design / components of the infotainment screen. I note a may 2020 TSB / dealer notification campaign which extended the warranty coverage period to 7 years for this exact same issue in 2016-2017 model year cx-9s. The 2019 model year cars have the exact same problem and Mazda is not covering the issue.

26 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 07/17/2022

The contact owns a 2009 Mazda cx-9. The contact stated that while the vehicle was idling at a red light the dash board warning lights suddenly activated and illuminated and while driving the vehicle would not properly accelerate. Shortly after parking in the driveway and exiting the vehicle moments later flames and smoke was present coming from the rear passenger side of the vehicle. The husband used water to extinguish the flames and the vehicle was towed to the local dealer. During the incident no injuries were reported and no fire or police report was filed. The cause of the failure was not determined and no repairs were performed. The failure mileage was 61,000.

27 Electrical System problem of the 2019 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 06/12/2022

Hi, I have a 2019 Mazda cx-9. It is a certified pre-owned vehicle we purchased in October 2020. Upon going out to our car yesterday, June 12th, 20212, I noticed that the top left of the center console screen appeared to be damaged. I was perplexed because the car was locked and it wasn't there previously. As I touched the screen, I realized that cracks/peeling were all internal within the screen. I immediately decided to google the issue to see if others have had similar experiences, and I found dozens and dozens of examples. Separately, there is a safety alert on the issue from Mazda (see here: https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/tsbs/2018/mc-10134920-9999. Pdf). Additionally, the issue has gotten so bad that Mazda has issued a warranty extension for this specific problem (see here: https://static. Nhtsa. Gov/odi/tsbs/2020/mc-10176061-0001. Pdf). The extension only is covering cars made through 4/29/17, and ours was made after that so is not formally covered at the moment. I called Mazda customer service, where both my cars are formally registered, to discuss the issue. They told me the best they could offer was for me to take it to a dealer, have the dealer attempt to have it covered under warranty, and Mazda corporate warranty will respond, but their response is final. If they say it's not covered, there is no debating it. As you can see from the picture, this is the exact issue that is currently being covered free of charge in earlier models. A recall should be issued or Mazda should be directed to expand this to later models since this is clearly not limited to the years they currently have listed. See the picture attached and the links above. Thank you.

28 Electrical System problem of the 2010 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 03/15/2022

I had engine failure with a complete loss of power and a shuttering of the steering wheel while pulling into a parking lot and going less than 30 miles per hour. The temperature gauze went from cold to hot suddenly. There were no leaks of coolant or oil and no signs that the engine was out of water or that the water pump had "melted". On the final car repair trip we found out that the engine has an internal water pump that failed and resulted in oil & water getting into the engine. The engine light never came on, I had complained about the tire pressure light blinking on and off in November 2021 and the deceleration issue I was having. The dealer did a coolant flush 11/2021. In early March 2022 the engine shut off as I was backing out of the driveway. I took it to a repair shop nearby they could not find anything wrong except that the car went into limp mode. They also did a coolant flush and radiator cap exchange since I forgot I had just done one on Nov. Less that a week later the engine failed again. We towed the car to the dealer for the third trip in less than four months. I am really disappointed that Mazda failed to recall the engine. I could have been seriously hurt if I had been traveling at high speeds. The Cx9 had less than 135,000 miles at 12 years old.

Failure Date: 01/10/2022

Multiple batteries replaced, after sitting for 24 hours the vehicle will not start. Believed to be the power liftgate module.

30 Electrical System problem of the 2020 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 07/27/2021

The 2020 Mazda completely shut off following an exit from an expressway, turn under a bridge and slow down for a red light. The Mazda electrically shut off and coasted to a braked stop in the center lane of a 3 lane road. The entire electrical system went dead, no exterior lights, signals, instrument panel or radio. There was no warning, everything electrical just shut off. In a moving traffic situation the car could not maneuver or restart without being placed in park. (there is a history of Mazda cx 9's having a similar problem which sent the driver to the local dealership. ) the car was restarted by shifting into park and pressing the start button, all functions appeared normal as the driver moved it to a parking lot to review the situation. The driver was unable to re-create the complete shut down and finished the trip. The driver took the Mazda to the dealer following the incident and was asked to leave the Mazda for observation. The driver was notified by the dealership that the problem was being elevated to the national team for diagnosis. 10 days later the local dealer called the driver and said that they; nor the Mazda engineers in California; could reproduce the system shutting off or find any error codes. They wanted to return the car to the driver with no need for a repair. The driver spoke to the national Mazda help line and the representative was aware of the situation. The representative reiterated that engineers had been unable to find the source for the incident in the computer logs so they could not provide a remedy. The representative offered the driver the choose of a purchase buy back and a discount on the purchase of a new car.

When I shifted into reverse the back up camera wouldn’t come on and instead a screen that said check your surroundings stayed on the screen. I reset it using the 3 button reset method and it came back on. Drove it to the grocery store, and then it sat in my driveway for 3 hours. When I went to go back in to town, the car was completely dead. No power whatsoever. We tried jumper cables and those didn’t work. Finally tried a battery charger and after an hour of charging it finally came back on. A car this new shouldn’t be having these issues.

Mazda has refused to admit and repair a clearly defective screen, affecting visibility of the camera system, navigation, climate controls and infotainment. Pictures attached are several months old and the issue continues to get worse. The dealer says "corporate won't cover it", corporate customer service will not respond to repeated attempts at contact other than a generic "your VIN is not covered". Service alert direct from Mazda and pictures of my screen showing the exact issue are attached. For a $40k+ vehicle with less than 30k miles on it (less than 20k when the issue started), this is unacceptable. Please hold Mazda accountable.

35 Electrical System problem of the 2016 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 11/01/2020

- the car was purchased new from a Mazda dealer in may 2017 - the driver side cushion heater failed in March 2020. - the passenger side cushion heater failed in November 2020 - both sides exhibited the same problem despite the fact that the usage of the passenger side was about 25% of the driver - from the time the cushion heaters failed, we observed random overheating of the back heaters and recorded "hot spots" of up to 149 deg f (picture attached) - while the cushion heaters don't operate, the backs get too hot for occupants (attached picture of skin reaction) and at one point the passenger side partially melted a plastic shopping bag - Mazda responded to the complaint that the car was outside of the 3-year warranty (expired in may 2020) and there were no related recalls so the company was not interested in any testing or investigation of the problem attached: - picture #1: temperature ir readings - picture #2: effect of the overheating on one of the occupants.
