1 Steering problem of the 2023 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 03/30/2025

Starting [xxx], through [xxx], we began receiving multiple "critical vehicle malfunction" alerts (46 alert messages)via the Mazda app, including "parking brake malfunction" and "electric parking brake malfunction. " during this time, the vehicle experienced delayed starts and eventually required a jump-start. We brought it to the dealership multiple times to show the messages, before our 3-year/36,000-mile b2b warranty expired, but the issues were dismissed until the battery was finally replaced. At just over 36,000 miles (currently 39,646), a new issue emerged a “thud” sound from the steering wheel. The dealer diagnosed it as a failed u-joint shaft, which was deemed non-serviceable and not covered under warranty. I inquired about potential causes or prevention—no clear answer was known. I found relevant NHTSA tsbs (06-001/20 & 06-001/24) related to steering issues and escalated to Mazda USA. Mazda agreed to cover 50% as a goodwill gesture, leaving me to pay about $500. Two weeks later, the part arrived and was installed—but it did not fix the issue. The dealership now says it’s a failed bearing within the electric power steering (eps) unit, which requires complete replacement at a cost of over $2,000. Only one part is available in the u. S. , with another two-week wait. The original (misdiagnosed) part was already sent back to Mazda. My out-of-pocket cost is now $1,151 and rising. Given the early warning alerts, misdiagnoses, and the fact that eps controls several safety-critical functions (steering, cruise, lane assist, etc. ), I believe this is a fundamental system failure that should be fully covered under warranty or as a safety-related goodwill repair. I respectfully request that Mazda assume full financial responsibility for the replacement and any related work. Thank you for your consideration. Information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).

2 Steering problem of the 2017 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 02/19/2025

I was driving the vehicle on the highway when the vehicle started to overheat, lights started blinking, the car was smoking, losing power and acceleration. This car has a recall on the cyclindwr head which when cracks causing the car to loose coolant and oil. If it cracks while you’re driving especially on the highway the car will immediately loose coolant and oil thus causing a very dangerous driving condition. There was no indicator prior to the failure that there was anything wrong with the car. No check engine lights, no coolant lights nothing. Prior to this happening I smelled coolant in the car cabin , took it to my mechanic who tested the coolant system and found no leak. At the time he was unaware of the known issue these cars have with the cylinder head. The problem has been confirmed by Mazda and they notified me within the month of March of the problem and the extended warranty to replace the known manufacturer defect cylinder head. The Mazda dealer now has my car and acknowledges the cracked cylinder head caused the problem but said because I didn’t immediately stop on the highway and kept driving until I got to a safe location I was negligent and are refusing to fix the car which now has a blown engine, etc. It is available for inspection now at the Mazda dealer. My safety was put at risk because I could have died on the highway if the car completely stopped working, it was dangerous driving it when it first started happening because it started out of nowhere the car was fine I was driving 50+ mph and it started smoking, overheating etc. I could have also killed someone else. It is a disgrace that not only they won’t fix my car they want to say they won’t because I’m negligent? I drive my kids to and from school everyday do you think I’m going to risk their safety in an unsafe car? they should not only fix the car but compensate me for putting mine and my children’s lives at risk. A complete disgrace.

5 Steering problem of the 2019 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 09/09/2024

My 2019 Mazda Cx9 when you turn the steering wheel it makes a clicking noise. I brought car to a mechanic and was told there is a loose bolt in steering column. Mazda has a TSB bulletin on this issue TSB# 06-001/24 dated 01/23/2024. When I brought car to palisades Mazda two other customers on line with me have the same issue. I looked on internet and found alot of people are having the same issue. Mazda is aware of this problem and it is a defect. Mazda is fixing this problem for cars under warranty but charging customers past warranty to replace the complete steering column to fix a loose bolt,.

6 Steering problem of the 2016 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 04/16/2024

1. What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? the entire electrical system is malfunctioning. All dashboard service lights (check engine, abs, etc. ) illuminate simultaneously, causing the vehicle to stutter and shut off while driving. The vehicle is available for inspection. 2. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? this issue has resulted in a dangerous situation, particularly when the vehicle lost power on the highway with my young children aboard. This sudden loss of control could have led to a severe accident. 3. Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? Mazda’s service department has not been able to reproduce the problem despite multiple visits. I have provided video evidence, but no conclusive diagnosis or resolution has been achieved. 4. Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? Mazda’s authorized technicians have inspected the vehicle several times, but no substantial action has been taken. The vehicle has not been inspected by police or insurance representatives. 5. Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? all dashboard lights come on simultaneously without prior warning. The symptoms have been random and intermittent over the past few months. Given the ongoing risk, I request an immediate replacement of my vehicle. Please confirm receipt of this complaint and provide a plan for replacement. Thank you for your prompt attention.

9 Steering problem of the 2012 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 10/27/2022

After hearing low rumbling sound and smelling burnt oil, car was taken to dealer for check up. They informed me of known issue, front ptu leaking oil due to design flaw that put the ptu so close to the exhaust. I am seeing that other owners of this model are also reporting fires due this same exact problem, apparently unbeknownst to me Mazda has provided extended warranty up to 90k miles but not actually informed the owners of this as a potential catastrophic problem. My personal review has informed me that fire seem to be most common between 110,000 and 130,000 mile ranges.

10 Steering problem of the 2018 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 10/06/2022

The cars engine makes loud rattling noise and slips gear. The vecicle jerks hard and feels as if transmission is slipping. Car hesitates when I shift into gear, followed by a jerking and jolting into gear. My brakes are replaced frequently. Mazda at 65643 miles on car found excess operating noise coming from engine coolant/water pump due to internal bearing failing. They replaced the water pump. Software (pyd8-18881-f) replaced. The vehicle has 74000 miles and has same problem. When stopped at a traffic signal it lunges forward at times. And shifts slow to fast gears. This problem is not resolved. The first time it was allegidely fixed was 22dec2021 it is now 05oct 2022.

15 Steering problem of the 2014 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 04/02/2020

1) when left parked for 2-3 days, Mazda cx-9 (mine is 2013) consistently drains the battery 2) on my grand touring the steering has a shake at above 60 mph the above problems are common on all Mazda cx-9 and consumers are spending $$$ on these manufacturer issues.

16 Steering problem of the 2008 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 11/25/2019

Mazda cx-9 problem 130,000 miles-on November 25th, as I was dropping my children to their schools, the defrost suddenly stops working. I try to turn the fan/heater all the way, but to no avail. I had to use a towel to wipe the windshield. As I pulled into a curved side, the engine turns off, I turned the ignition key to off, then starts the engine again, and the engine light comes on. I pulled out and drove about six hundred feet and parked. I call a mechanic and I drove it again for a mile to the shop. He opens up the hood and pour in some coolant and all the coolant were on the floor. He immediately told me that coolant leaks and oil is probably mixed and causes the engine failure. He told me I had to change the engine, because fixing it will cost me over ten grand. I drove it home, then the following morning, I took to a different shop, they did the diagnosis and relate the same story that check codes showed three codes: p0016, crank position sensor correlation bank one sensor a. 1285 cylinder head over temperature, 1299 cylinder head temp protection. The codes indicate an overheat scenario that resulted in engine shut down. They check oil and found milky substance instead of oil. Pressure check for coolant leak pushed milky oil out of dipstick tube. Head gasket has failed due to overheating and the coolant has contaminated the engine oil. Their recommendation is to replace the engine, assembly and flush cooling system. Their total estimate is $10,900. I can't afford to pay for this service repair. I cannot even spend that much of money on another car. We bought this car thinking that it will take us for some time before we'll need another car. I contacted Mazda customer experience, and their response was, "wish there were never part failures", now, I'm stuck. So this is my story!!! safety issues: sudden engine shut off, defrost malfunction and steering wheel.

17 Steering problem of the 2012 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 08/30/2019

Driving on rte 3 n in braintree. Car was decelerating while I had my foot on gas. Lost steering and barely made it to brake down lane. This car has 72k miles on it. Needs new engine.

18 Steering problem of the 2018 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 03/23/2019

This vehicle is has been on lease for 1 year and has less than 4000 miles on it. Initially while attempting to start the vehicle that had been parked overnight it gave the following warnings: - keyless entry malfunction - charging system malfunction - vehicle overheating - battery malfunction the car would not shut off until I held the start/stop button in for roughly 20secs. The dealer service center took the car and told us the battery had a low charge, charged it and returned it. Several weeks later while the vehicle was in motion with 2 adults and 2 children on a city street traveling at about 20mph it gave the following warnings: - keyless entry malfuction - charging system malfuction - vehicle overheating - battery malfunction - pull over to safety at this point the vehicle was still in motion and the stereo, hvac, and power steering cut out. I was able to pull the vehicle over but again had trouble shutting it off. I had to hold the start/stop button for 20-40secs. The car was towed to the dealer service center. We were told by the service center that a lot of 500 vehicles of this year and model had an engine harness defect that no recall had been issued for but they were aware of defect and had a fix for it. I feel I was lucky that I was only traveling 20mph when the power steering cut out. If I had been traveling highway speeds on a bend the situation could have been tragic and I had my children in the car. Currently, based on what I've been told by the dealer service and sales managers there are potentially hundreds of other 2018 cx-9s which could experience this same malfunction while in motion.

19 Steering problem of the 2010 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 09/21/2018

Control arm/ball joints- had to have replaced again on 9/21/18 after both being replaced on 1/12/2016 as part of a recall. Feels like the car is trying to steer itself and not very safe to drive. And then have to pay for another alignment which I just had done as well. There should be some type of warranty on a recall repair.

21 Steering problem of the 2010 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 10/03/2016

After recently receiving our vehicle back from a Mazda dealer for warranty repairs on the ptu and control arms, we were driving down the highway at 65 mph - initially going up a hill in the mountains. The car would not shift gears (an automatic) and then would not accelerate past 30 mph. No dummy lights lit whatsoever. We got to the top of the hill and having no place to pull off on the highway mountain shoulder, stayed in the lane of traffic with our hazards on. The down side of the hill was a 6% grade with a cliff on the other side of the guard rails. All of a sudden - the power steering went out and the car was hard to steer. There was still no place to pull over on the mountain highway, so we coasted. We then noticed the rpm's were at 0 and all the dummy lights that are on when the car ignition is in accessory were lit up. The car had turned off - while we were going 65 mph on a 6% grade. No warning - no sounds, smoke, dummy lights - just off. Very amazingly dangerous. We were very lucky to not die a fiery death. My husband was able to keep calm and thankfully the brakes worked - we were able to stop towards the bottom of the hill. We had the car towed as it wouldn't start/stay running. The diagnosis by the dealer (not the dealer who did the prior warranty work) was a failed engine rod. Would have been nice to get a check engine light before having the car completely shut off. We drove the vehicle for less than 100 miles after receiving back from the warranty work and now this.

22 Steering problem of the 2011 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 09/16/2016

As I was driving my car on a city street, I lost all steering and braking ability. The first time it happened - mazada thought it was a suction from the brake and a tube that was broken. However it just happened again as I was reversing in a parking lot. The car is now with mazada being looked at. . .

23 Steering problem of the 2008 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 07/30/2016

I had a recall notice about potential defect on the airbag system that can cause personal injury on my Mazda c-x 9 2008. I contacted the dealer close to my resident as prescribed on the recall notice. They said they will get back with me as soon as the parts are available. It has been more than 3 months and I have not got any response from the dealer. I will be very grateful to get a follow up to see that this my car is fixed. Thanks very much in advance.

24 Steering problem of the 2011 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 05/16/2016

I took my car to hall in brookfield WI to fix a recall issue. The dealer told me they fixed the recall issue but noticed another problem that requires the replacement of the differential bushings because they were torn. They charged me over $500 for this issue and I believe the issue was exasperated by the recall issue and I am not sure why I had to pay. I honestly believe it was a way for the dealer to charge me for the recall work because it was supposed to be free. I am attaching receipts for the work hall did to this complaint. Now my car is having issues with properly accelerating and is very loud.

25 Steering problem of the 2009 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 03/10/2016

While traveling @ about 15 mph made a right turn up a one way street, car made a loud thump sound and lurched forward. At which point the car stopped and I was not able to move back or forward. Exited vehicle to find driver side wheel broke off and moved forward in the wheel well. Mazda roadside was called and flatbed service arranged. Car is well maintained and only has 74,000 miles. Mazda needs to act quickly on this recall issue because some one is going to get seriously injured or kiilled (driving at highway speeds).

26 Steering problem of the 2007 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 01/29/2016

Mazda recall state of NJ. The car was in motion when the tire came loose. My husband hit a small pothole. Luckily we were able to get the car on the side of ride. Due to the recall we were not able to put the claim through our insurance and Mazda is telling me I won't get a refund for the work done because it took so long to be repaired. Unfortunately, we do not recall receiving anything about the recall. After reading the recall basically what it said could happen did and the car needed repairs. I attached the invoice and recall from Mazda's website.

27 Steering problem of the 2008 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 01/26/2016

I was making a left turn on a parking lot when I heard a loud crunch coming from the front of the vehicle and fully lost control of the car. When I came outside to see what happened I saw that ball joint on my front left (driver side) broke, the wheel with part of the axel fully out, and that break fluid was spoiled all over. Imagine this happening on the fighter when I was driving with two of my young kids!!.

28 Steering problem of the 2008 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 11/15/2015

While taking a right hand turn in the parking lot of logan airport, and travelling about 5-10 mph, my car made a loud noise and came to a sudden and abrupt halt. I stepped out of the car and discovered that the driver's side front tire had disconnected from the steering arm. The car was immobilized, and I was not able to move it out of the way of other traffic in the airport parking lot, causing chaos in the parking lot and causing them to temporarily shut down an entire floor of the parking lot while they struggled to tow the car out of the way. The car was subsequently towed to a Mazda dealership and the tire arms and ball joints were repaired pursuant to a recall (8515g). The front tires were also unevenly worn and replaced, very likely from the ball joint / steering arm issue, and cost $481. 55. Mazda would not reimburse for the tires because I could not locate receipts to prove I had rotated the tires at the appropriate intervals, specifically stating "our dealer was unable to confirm if the wearing of the tires were due to the recall item as there was no supporting documentation indicating the proper maintenance on the tires". I do not believe most people keep records of every oil change / tire rotation they have done, but the wear was very consistent with what would be expected for ball joint issues. Furthermore the car had been inspected by the state of massachusetts in the month of September, and no uneven wear was found at that time, giving further indication that the uneven wear was linked to the ball joint / tire rod issue. Fortunately this did not occur one day earlier while towing a boat on the highway with my disabled son, this could have easily been a multi fatality accident. I have literally had nightmares over this possibility. This is an extremely dangerous situation.

29 Steering problem of the 2009 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 09/25/2015

Tl- the contact owns a 2009 Mazda Cx9. The contact stated received notification of NHTSA campaign number: 15v451000 (suspension). However, the part to do the repair was not available. The contact stated that the vehicle had experienced the failure. The contact stated that while driving approximately 20 mph, there was an abnormal noise, the ball joints failed and the vehicle stopped suddenly. The vehicle was towed to the dealer mechanic. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 65,000. Bd.

30 Steering problem of the 2008 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 09/23/2015

Was driving on neighborhood road, heading toward a state highway when all of the sudden a large boom occured and I lost total comtrol of the car and went up the curb and onto the sidewalk. I thought I'd blown a tire but got out and saw the entire wheel was disconnected - the suspension ruined. Would be happy to share pictures mechanic says ball joint, cv joint came completely off as well as brake fluid all over. I read online about similar issues and that NHTSA has an open investigation under NHTSA action number: pe15022. Consider this another case! I'm thankful there were no people that I swerved into when losing control! this is clearly a saftey hazard- ay least in states where salt is used on roads, like here in mn I expect mazada to take tesponsibility amd pay for these repairs please contact me with additional info or next steps. Thank you!.

31 Steering problem of the 2007 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 06/21/2015

Yesterday (6/21/15) at approximately 630pm; my wife was driving our 2007 Mazda Cx9 grand touring (awd). As she was pulling out of a subdivision at approximately 10mph, she heard a loud bang and then immediately lost control of the vehicle. There was no other traffic in the vicinity and she was able to maintain control and get stopped. The right front passenger wheel at broken free of the suspension and steering mechanism. According to the repair shop the lower ball joint broke, pushed out and broke the axle shaft. Also the force of the shifting wheel/tire pushed the right quarter-panel into the right passenger door, making the door inoperable. I've heard of others with this same incident with the Cx9. Fortunately this occurred at low speed, with no other traffic or pedestrians in the area.

32 Steering problem of the 2008 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 06/10/2015

08 Mazda cx-9 making loud noise underneath vehicle. Made a right turn(5mph) in residential area. While making the turn the left side suspension/steering came apart causing vehicle to come to a sudden stop. Vehicle was towed and later repaired at a firestone auto care. Vehicle needed repairs to control arm assembly(remove-replace f control arm/lower one side). . Left new cv complete assembly(remove/install f axle shaft assembly-left). Sway bar link(remove/replace f stabilizer bar control link-both). Replace front shock/strut assemly-both sides. Sudden stop also caused damage to left front tire that had to be replaced. Total amount of repairs $1,756. 96. Providing this information after reading on internet that NHTSA was investigating similar complaints involving this vehicle and front end problems.

33 Steering problem of the 2008 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 06/06/2015

On 06 June 2015 at approximately 1400 my wife was making a left hand turn through an intersection at approximately 15 mph. Near the end of the turn the front passenger wheel broke loose turning nearly 90 degrees to the right and jammed itself into the rear of the fender well. The car was immediately immobilized and came to an abrupt halt in the middle of the intersection. Looking at the damage it was obvious that the lower ball joint had failed and broke completely free. This caused the wheel to turn nearly 90 degrees to the right which subsequently ripped out the cv axle from the transmission. Had this occurred at highway speeds the results could have been deadly. The vehicle had to be towed to a repair facility where the control arm/ball joint assembly, the cv shaft, and sway bar link was replaced. There is also fender well and body damage that will have to be repaired. On 10 July 2015, I noticed an unusual instability while negotiating wide turns on the highway. It felt as if the vehicle had a wheel loose. While turning to the right, the vehicle would abruptly turn even sharper to right almost causing an unintentional lane change. After coming out of the turn I could feel the vehicle suddenly correct itself. Once I arrived at my residence I jacked up the front end of the vehicle to inspect the front wheels. The front passenger wheel seemed normal (was repaired in June 2015 as mentioned above). Much to my dismay when inspecting the front driver side wheel, I discovered that the ball joint on this side is now broke. It is not separated, but is clearly broken as evidenced by the excessive movement and clunking noise when moving the wheel from side to side as it is suspended above the ground from the car being on a jack. I will be having this repaired this week once parts arrive from the local Mazda dealer. Bottom line: I no longer feel safe in this vehicle.

34 Steering problem of the 2007 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 05/25/2015

While backing out of my driveway the right front ball joint separated and then the pulled wheel away from the vehicle, pulling the axle out. We had to remove the wheel, insert the axle and put the wheel back on before we could even move the car onto the tow truck.

35 Steering problem of the 2007 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 04/03/2015

Was driving my car with children in it when the wheel fell off and axel cracked. It caused front end damage I couldn't get out of the driver side door because it wouldn't open. Had to pay to get all of that fixed. I just receive recall 8515g. My issue with this is that the recall does not correct the issue. The reason for the recall is that water get leak into the suspension and cause corrosion. Replacing just the control arms and ball joints does not prevent this from happening again. Water can still leak into the suspension and the new parts could could corrode, become loose and cause the same thing to happen again but this time it could result in more dire consequences. We were lucky I was traveling at a low rate of speed the first time it happened. This is forcing us to buy a new car when we still owe $8000 on the Mazdaz we want to be reimbursed for this and the accident we had and the risk it out the lives of me and my children in. Furthermore Mazda said there is a shortage of parts which means they won't replace if there is no sign of looseness. This is rediculous as my crash occurred a few months after being inspected. They are endangering lives.
