1 Wiper problem of the 2019 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 09/15/2025

The contact owns a 2019 Mazda cx-9. The contact stated that a state inspection was performed on the windshield for cracks. The contact stated that while driving in the rain, the front windshield wipers turned on independently with the switch in the off position. The contact was unable to turn off the windshield wipers. The contact pulled over to the side of the road and turned off the vehicle. When the vehicle was restarted, the front windshield wipers had turned off. The contact stated that the failure persisted and worsened. The contact stated that occasionally the windshield wipers failed to turn off. The vehicle was taken to the dealer; however, no cause for the failure was found. The vehicle was not repaired. The contact purchased and replaced a sensor. Upon investigation, the contact became aware that the on and off switch for the front windshield wipers related to the sensor located on the front windshield. The contact stated that the sensor controlled the on and off switch and failed to function as intended. The contact stated that the oem windshield provided protection against the sensor malfunctioning; however, if the front windshield was replaced with a non-oem windshield, the windshield wipers would fail to operate as designed. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 56,199.

3 Wiper problem of the 2022 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 01/25/2025

The windshield wiper sprayers don't work properly when it gets significantly below freezing. This is incredibly dangerous on highways where it snows and the roads are salted, allowing for the snow to be thrown up as mud. This ends up in the windshield wipers just spreading mud all over the windshield and reducing visibility to near 0. Having this occur while driving at lower highway speeds makes this incredibly dangerous. Having to pull over on the highway when it's snowing isn't great, especially when some mountain highways have concrete walls with no shoulder. Using fluid that is rated for below freezing also causes this to freeze, suggesting that it may be related to wind chill while traveling at speed. It's also definitely not an issue with the overall system or the fluid because the rear windshield wipers still work. This is probably due to the way they designed this to move the emitters off the hood. A search for the term, "Mazda cx-9 windshield wiper frozen", shows many such reports online. Some have complained to Mazda only to have this ignored by them. There were on indicators in the vehicle to show that that was a potential problem.

5 Wiper problem of the 2019 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 04/04/2023

Internal (growing) spider cracks on center displays. The cracks are internal and cannot be felt by touch. Visibility risk when trying to use the backup camera. This problem is known by Mazda and they've issued a service alert (attached) for models 2016-2018 but for some reason excluded 2019. Currently Mazda seems unwilling to cover the repair.

6 Wiper problem of the 2020 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 07/09/2022

While driving at freeway speed in oregon, with 85 degrees ambient temperature and a/c inside set to 74 degrees, our cx-9 sunroof exploded outward. The sound was close to a very loud pop, and not the sound of rock/debris impact. At the time of explosion, there were no vehicles nearby and no overpasses from which an object could have dropped. The vehicle had been washed the day before and there was no visible damage to the sunroof. At the time of explosion, the sunroof and interior cover were closed. Upon stopping the vehicle (within less than one mile) inspection showed that nearly no glass fell downward, and approximately 50% of the total sunroof area had blown upward and out of the vehicle. The remainder of the shattered glass was still contained within the frame, with the edges visibly curved upward as though the glass had been pulled away from the car. There were three people in the vehicle at the time (driver, front seat passenger, and middle row passenger behind the driver). The two passengers were asleep and woke abruptly thinking we had been hit by something, as the explosive bang was followed by the sound of air rushing past the hole. There was no sound of glass rattling in the area over the sunroof cover, which seems to indicate glass had not broken inward and then blew out before stopping. I (driver) kept the cover closed and promptly pulled off the freeway to assess damage. I was unable to visit a dealer for warranty assessment due to vacation travel. A phone call to my local dealer did indicate it should be covered under warranty but it has not been inspected, this has not yet been confirmed. I rarely open the sunroof cover and have only opened the sunroof itself 3-4 times since purchase two years prior (2020). I did open the sunroof to give my son fresh air on curvy roads approximately one hour prior. No injuries, but if the cover had been opened we may have had glass falling into the cabin. No other visible or audible warnings occurred.

7 Wiper problem of the 2021 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 04/30/2022

On 4/30/2022 the rear door lift gate opened unexpectedly and hit the ceiling of a parking garage (the summit at las calinas, irving texas) , the glass window shattered, glass fell in and outside the car. An unfamiliar beeping was heard before the accident, but the source could not be located prior to the impact with the ceiling. A lift gate ajar warning indicator light likely flashed on the dash but was not noticed. We surmised that the root cause was likely due to unintentional pressing of the rear lift gate key fob button (driver had put key fob in pants pocket). This unintentional and unexpected opening of the lift gate has happened on at least 4 prior occasions when the key fob lift gate button has been unintentional pressed. One time resulting in being hit in the head with the lift gate! potential risks: 1) people near the rear of the car can be struck when the lift gate unexpectedly opens, 2) young children who are sitting in the third seat are exposed, 3) trunk contents can spill out if not secured, 4) valuables are exposed if lift gate opens while parked unbeknownst to the driver, 5) damage to vehicle if rear lift gate opens in a home garage and hits the garage door, 6) other Mazda owners as reported on reddit. . 10 Wiper problem of the 2008 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 11/25/2019

Mazda cx-9 problem 130,000 miles-on November 25th, as I was dropping my children to their schools, the defrost suddenly stops working. I try to turn the fan/heater all the way, but to no avail. I had to use a towel to wipe the windshield. As I pulled into a curved side, the engine turns off, I turned the ignition key to off, then starts the engine again, and the engine light comes on. I pulled out and drove about six hundred feet and parked. I call a mechanic and I drove it again for a mile to the shop. He opens up the hood and pour in some coolant and all the coolant were on the floor. He immediately told me that coolant leaks and oil is probably mixed and causes the engine failure. He told me I had to change the engine, because fixing it will cost me over ten grand. I drove it home, then the following morning, I took to a different shop, they did the diagnosis and relate the same story that check codes showed three codes: p0016, crank position sensor correlation bank one sensor a. 1285 cylinder head over temperature, 1299 cylinder head temp protection. The codes indicate an overheat scenario that resulted in engine shut down. They check oil and found milky substance instead of oil. Pressure check for coolant leak pushed milky oil out of dipstick tube. Head gasket has failed due to overheating and the coolant has contaminated the engine oil. Their recommendation is to replace the engine, assembly and flush cooling system. Their total estimate is $10,900. I can't afford to pay for this service repair. I cannot even spend that much of money on another car. We bought this car thinking that it will take us for some time before we'll need another car. I contacted Mazda customer experience, and their response was, "wish there were never part failures", now, I'm stuck. So this is my story!!! safety issues: sudden engine shut off, defrost malfunction and steering wheel.

11 Wiper problem of the 2016 Mazda CX9

Failure Date: 12/20/2018

Multiple times while during inclement weather, pouring rain/sleet, the driver's side windshield wiper blade flew off of the car - causing a safety issue with visibility. We had to pull over to the side of the highway and switch to the passenger side's wiper blade, so that we could get to a safer place to be out of the way of traffic. It was night time during one incident and daytime during the other. The issue seems to be the way the wiper blade attaches to the arm.
