1 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem of the 2006 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/10/2014

During normal vehicle operation, without warning or indication, the vehicle master clutch cylinder plunger connecting from the clutch pedal to the master cylinder in the interior of the vehicle broke and disconnected the linkage between the clutch pedal and the clutch master cylinder thereby rendering the clutch system inoperable. This caused the inability to disengage the transmission from the drive gears and into neutral, which therefore caused the engine to stall once I safely braked to a stop. In my situation I was able to safely stop the vehicle, but this issue may cause a safety issue if I were at high speeds.

2 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem of the 2012 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 01/18/2014

While driving on four lane highway, car slowed and failed to respond to gas pedal. Could not shift gears in manual transmission. Pulled to side of roadway and called for tow to dealer. Dealer found front surface of clutch disk to be completely worn away, thus allowing clutch to slip. Danger was inability to maintain flow with heavy traffic. Due to low mileage, suspect defect in parts or assembly.

3 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem of the 2012 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 10/25/2013

I have a '12 Mazda Mazda3 itouring hatchback w/2. 0l skyactiv I-4 (bl generation) with skyactiv 6mt. When starting off from a stop in 1st gear and shifting into 2nd gear (clutch pedal completely depressed before shifter was pulled out of 1st, no gas pedal was applied) transmission would grind when shifter is being pulled into 2nd gear. Grind can be heard inside and outside, and can be felt in shifter. Grind would continue for less than a second then would pop fully into 2nd gear. Along with issue, whenever grind does not occur, shifting into 2nd gear requires significantly more force to fully engage compared to reverse, 1st, 3rd, 4th, 5th and 6th gears. Mazda dealership could not duplicate symptom, therefore declaring an "npf" or "no problem found. ".

4 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem of the 2012 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 02/13/2013

While downshifting from 4th to 3rd and/or 5th to 4th to slow down without having my foot on the gas pedal (only on the clutch) my 2012 Mazda 3 itouring 6 speed mt accelerates very rapidly and jerks about. It happens for several seconds and then stops. It's almost every time I downshift. I brought it to the attention of the Mazda dealer on the first service appointment at 5000 miles in April 2013. However, the service advisor informed me that mechanic checked the problem and found no issues with the car that would be causing this problem.

5 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 10/01/2012

At around 24,000 miles I experienced a partial clutch failure (couldn't shift out of gear) that went away after pumping the clutch petal. I asked the dealership about this and was told not to worry about it, and that it was probably due to clutch freezing up in the cold. At around 30,000 miles the car started shaking whenever I engaged/disengaged the clutch. In order to get the clutch to engage at all I had to let off the clutch petal much slower than usual. I took the car to the original dealership it was purchased at and was told the friction disc was worn out, and that this was a wear and tear item and therefore not under warranty. In addition, they said that the pilot bearing had failed. After getting these items replaced a loud creaking noise occurs whenever engaging/disengaging the clutch or accelerator pedals. The issue is still not resolved.

6 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem of the 2012 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 09/15/2012

My 2012 Mazda 3 skyactiv hatchback with the 6 speed manual transmission is exhibiting unintended acceleration. The symptoms exhibited are consistent with multiple other reports in this system. After downshifting into 2nd or 3rd gear, or after coasting in one of those gears with the clutch disengaged, the engine revs and the car "surges" forward upon re-engagement of the clutch. When this occurs, the accelerator pedal is only being slightly pushed, but the car acts as if it has been pushed almost to the floor. Depending on the position of the clutch pedal when this occurs, the engine will either rev to 3000 to 4000 rpm, or the car will accelerate forward until either the brake or clutch pedal is pressed. This issue has been confirmed by Mazda after multiple trips to the dealership for service. Upon the last visit, a data recorder was installed and recorded 7 specific unintended acceleration events between the dates of 11/13/12 and 11/20/12. According to an email I received from the district service & parts manager for district 2 of Mazda north America operations (mnao) on 12/23/12, "the concern found on the data recordings taken from your vehicle were found to be a pcm calibration issue. Mazda corporation is working on a new calibration for the pcm with an unknown time of completion. " when I requested that my vehicle be replaced with another of the same model, this was the response from the same district service & parts manager: "since the calibration of the pcm is the same on a 2013 like model with a manual transmission it would not be advised to trade you into that vehicle as it could potentially exhibit the same concern depending on your driving habits and conditions. " I am currently awaiting a response from mnao's mediation department regarding either replacing my car with another model, or buying back the car from me.

7 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem of the 2012 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 02/10/2012

The car sometimes surges during downshifting. I will be driving in moderate traffic in third gear. The traffic slows, and I let in the clutch and apply the brake. When the traffic starts to pick up again, I am going too slow for third, so I shift into second and let the clutch out. My right foot is just resting lightly on the gas pedal. The car has not been idling fast, but as soon as the clutch is engaged, the engine suddenly roars and the car leaps forward, even though I have not pressed the gas at all. I let in the clutch again to avoid an accident. When I let it out again, it works normally. This happens once, twice, or not at all in a 40-mile round trip out of town and back. It also happens frequently when I make a left turn without stopping, but where I need to slow and downshift. I coast into the turn with the clutch pedal in, shift down, and attempt to let the clutch out when coming out of the turn. I would expect the car to slow when I shift down unless I am pressing the accelerator, but something other than me is giving it gas. It is impossible to predict when this will happen, and it never happens twice in a row. I have made it happen on purpose, but I think that was pure luck. It happens when downshifting into any gear, but because of the heavy traffic in our area, it ends up usually being third to second. It has happened to me when downshifting into third or fourth also.

8 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 12/13/2011

I purchased a 2010 Mazda 3 as a demo on July 30, 2011 with 4100 miles on it. I now have 8500 miles on it and the clutch has failed. After taking it to the local Mazda dealership, I was told it was a normal wear produce and it had been abused so I had to pay for the repair. When I bought the car it had a high release in the clutch pedal but I figured it was normal for the car. Since early November, the "intake manifold runner" has been extremely sensitive to the point that I cannot maintain speed up a slight incline without the engine revving up. I was told when I took the car to the dealership this was due to a clutch failure. I don't believe it is acceptable for a clutch to go out after just 8500 miles of driving. My previous vehicle went over 100,000 miles of my same driving and manual transmission without any clutch issues. I am not happy with Mazda, Mazda parts, and Mazda's customer assistance on this issue.

9 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem of the 2010 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 07/10/2011

Clutch failed at 19. 5k miles. Ive only had her since November, and with the way I drive theres no way in hell the clutch should go out this soon. . . Now as to explain as to what happened, I was driving on the highway when my engine started reving a bit oddly when I barely pressed on the gas pedal. It went from the normal 2900 rpm in 6th gear at about 65 mph and shot up to 3500 way to quickly then dropped back to 2900 and slowly rose how it shouldve to get me to 70mph. . . It continued doing this when I got off the highway for about 15 minutes, growing steadily worse until I was unable to get into any gear at all. There was never a smell of clutch inside the car the entire time, no odd noises, no grinding, and the clutch was about half as stiff as it normally was. So I called Mazda rsa, they towed my car(course it took forever because they sent the truck to the wrong location haha). It took 2 days before they even got to glance at the car to see what needed to be done(not take apart mind u, just looked), and said the clutch was "smoked" no other specifics but wanted me to authorize them for 525 worth of labor plus parts -_-. So now im stuck fighting them to repair this under warranty(I know theres usually not a warranty unless manufacturers defect. . But this is definitely defective).

10 Clutch Pedal/linkage problem of the 2007 Mazda MAZDA3

Failure Date: 11/11/2009

Clutch pedal was depressed, shifting from 3rd to 2nd as the gear lever hit neutral there was a faint popping noise, clutch pedal froze in the down position, I sensed something wrong and allowed forward momentum to pull to the curb. I attempted to finish shifting, gears were unusable, clutch pedal frozen down. This all occurred in a half a second or less. Luckily I was in the right lane and there was surprisingly little traffic. 2 blocks further and this would have occurred in heavy rush hour traffic at 65 miles an hour. After 5 minutes of making phone calls for assistance, the clutch pedal released and I was able to slowly limp to the dealership. There were no prior signs of clutch wear except for a couple prior days in which the clutch felt a little softer then normal but so little I couldn't tell if was the new shoes or the car. The car has 38,000 miles. It is used primarily to get to work with 50/50 street and highway driving and roughly 36 miles a day. With 4 models of this brand over 20 years I have never had a clutch repair with an average life of 90-100k miles.
