1 Transmission Failure problem of the 1999 Mazda Protege

Failure Date: 09/01/2007

Problem Mazda transmission failure . Mazda Protege 1999 this car had a major engine overhaul recent about a year from now. One month after overhaul transmission failed. Mazda refused to be responsible for this failure. Transmission was replaced at owner expense exactly one year after that transmission was fixed failure again . Again transmission not covered out of warranty. Estimate as to how much has been spent so far $3,500. As of now I cant drive this car because the car cant be moved due to malfunction. After research online I have found this VIN number on this Mazda has had issues with transmission failure at off lamp flashing no shift condition 3rd gear shift ration set erratic shifts issues with transmission issues etc. I personally feel they should compensate or at least try and help to get this resolved and they refuse to admit they have an issue with the transmissions on this car VIN very bad practice this should be a recall or at least try and help pay for all these damages I don't think I should have to buy a car transmission every year because they don't want to admit or take any responsibility with this "known issue" I called Mazda they said I have to pay all damages on transmission I don't drive alot car is driven very minimal work and back.

2 Transmission Failure problem of the 2002 Mazda Protege

Failure Date: 09/06/2005

I have a 2002 Mazda Protege lx with 61,000 miles on it. Recently my transmission failed and had to fix it with aamoco. Total bill, $2500. I realized the problem when I drove the car it wouldn't shift. It acted like I was driving in neutral. Mazda refused to take care of the problem and now I'm stuck with a have safe half reliable car. This is very dangerous because if your driving on a highway and you can't accelerate it creates a very scary dangerous problem.

4 Transmission Failure problem of the 2000 Mazda Protege

Failure Date: 09/11/2004

While driving 50 mph check engine light appeared on the dashboard and remained on. Vehicle was taken to the dealer for inspection, and the mechanic determined that transmission needed to be replaced. Also, while applying the brake pedal vehicle failed to stop. However, consumer was able to maintain control of the vehicle, and drove it to the dealer for inspection. The mechanic determined that the brakes needed to be replaced, and replaced them three times. However, the problem recurred. . . . . . The transmission cost $1,800. 00 to be replaced. The contact stated that a vehicle with not much mileage should not have a major transmission failure. The car jerked and was shifting gears while driving. It was clearly a defective transmission.

5 Transmission Failure problem of the 2001 Mazda Protege

Failure Date: 06/25/2004

While driving my Mazda Protege to work when automatic transmission would not shift down into first gear. After shift to neutral and back to drive, trans shifted to first gear. Drove normally for next 15 miles to work. When leaving for lunch, transmission failed completely after 15 seconds in drive. Car is 3 yrs 3 months old, was bought new and had 53,000 miles at time of failure. Car had been carefully maintained according to manufacturer's schedule. Dealer's service rep said car was out of warranty, and would not consider any assistance due to fact that the car had not been maintained there. I contacted area manufacturer's rep and was told same thing. Tried one last time to get help by calling dealer's service manager - he was able to get Mazda to pay for half of a rebuilt transmission (about $800), but by this time (10 days after the event) I had already had the car repaired (rebuilt trans installed) at another shop, so the assistance offer was withdrawn. Total repairs cost me $1835 (as opposed to $2650 from Mazda), and car was out of service for 9 days. Transmissions should not fail at 53,000 miles. The trans shop I dealt with said they see Mazda Proteges and 626s quite often with this same problem. I am trying to pursue complete reimbursement of my out-of-pocket costs, and will continue to do so.

6 Transmission Failure problem of the 2003 Mazda Protege

Failure Date: 02/06/2004

My transmission completely failed at 18,000 miles and one month shy of being a year old. A new transmission was installed. I had my car back for one week and the new transmission would down shift for no reason as I was doing 70 mph down the interstate. After replacing the computer, throttle position sensor, throttle range sensor, and the engine wiring harness, Mazda has now decided to replace the new transmission. This will be the third transmission in a year old car.

7 Transmission Failure problem of the 2000 Mazda Protege

Failure Date: 12/01/2003

Vehicle recently repaired for transmission failure, which necessitated repairs in excess of $2,500. 00. (nar).

8 Transmission Failure problem of the 2000 Mazda Protege

Failure Date: 06/05/2003

On several non-successive occurrences, while driving between 35 - 40 mph, I encountered a severe sudden deceleration which felt as if the vehicle undercarriage scraped an invisible bump. The deceleration is sudden, harsh and very unsettling. Also, while driving up east coast mountains, such as in MD. Va. And PA. , the transmission seems to have a very bad smell as if heating up too much. Eventually the transmission failed. It was replaced by dealer at no cost. Now the replacement transmission is doing the same things again! it looks like the transmission is due to fail again!!.

9 Transmission Failure problem of the 1999 Mazda Protege

Failure Date: 04/14/2003

While driving 30 mph the transmission failed and caused the vehicle not to accelerate. The dealer was notified.

10 Transmission Failure problem of the 1999 Mazda Protege

Failure Date: 02/12/1999

I've read that late model years with the at have experienced random hard shifts while going at moderate speeds. I was accelerating gently from 35 to 40 mpg on a very gentle slope when I felt as if the car hit a large bump or ridge. Curious and worried, I turned back and retraced my path to see if it would repeat. It didn't, but I am concerned that this will develop into a major problem later. I've read from other owners of late model Proteges with the at that they may abruptly seize while in operation. Blame is pinned on the Ford-designed at. Please look into this matter as it could easily result in accidents and casualties should this transmission fail suddenly in traffic.
