Engine Shut Off Without Warning problem of the 2004 Mazda Tribute

Failure Date: 04/30/2007
Vehicle exhibited extended crank prior to the incident. As it was nearing 30k mile service, we decided to wait and have dealer inspect at that time. Before the car went in for maintenance, it shut down going uphill. Although it would restart, it ran rough and had to be towed to the nearest dealership. #3 ignition coil was replaced that that visit. The car began starting hard again in late 2007 and was brought to the dealership again - this visit, they replaced the idle air valve, hoping to fix the problem. It continued to start hard and 2 weeks later it ran very rough again on startup. This visit had the dealership replace the #2 ignition coil. The car continued to start hard, was returned to the dealership, and the #4 ignition coil was replaced. Hard start continued, car back to dealer again, fuel pump replaced. This brings us to today - the car has been out of the shop for 6 days and is starting worse than it had been prior to the last visit. Note: warranty ran out on the vehicle on 4/2 and the dealer and Mazda would like me to start paying for repair. This is a major safety issue, as the car shut down while driving. On top of that, the frustration of having to go back and forth from the dealership has been awful. Also, note: the hard start was easiest to duplicate after the car had been driven and warmed up, rested off for ~ 1 hour, then restarted (like when you got ot the grocery store).

Approximately a week and a half after having the throttle cable serviced on a recall, was travel at 75 mph when the vehciles rpms started to revving at a high rpm, but no increase in speed. Vehciles engine shut off and I managed to pull the side of the road. After having the wehcile towed to the dealer, I was told the entire engine needed to be replaced, they could not tell me what caused the problem, vehcile was 4 months out of warrenty, with 34,700 miles. Mazda only helping with a small percentage of the repair bill of approx. $ 5,500. 00. Have had no luck in contacting anyone at Mazda who can help. I'm convinced that the replaced throttle cable failed or become stuck, but the dealer claims that it had nothing to do with what happened. Until this had no problems with vehicle.

On November 2 driving 40mph with no warning my engine shut off and I lost power to my steering and brakes. I was able to get the car to the side of the road after applying all my weight to the brakes and steering wheel. I missed an oncoming car and a tree by luck. I took the Tribute to the dealership and was told by the service manager that this was an ongoing problem. They were going to put me back in the Tribute until Monday when they had an opening. I requested a rental car because I did not feel safe driving the car untill the problem was resolved. The manager also told me that the Tributes that have been repaired for this same problem have been different porblems. I returned home and called the Mazda customer service department and reported the problem. They assured me that they would look into it and get back with me, this never happened. On November 6th I received a call from the dealership that my car was ready. I asked to speak with the sevice manager who informed me they could not find anything wrong and I could pick up my car. I told him I would not pick up the car until there was a solution to correct the problem and the car was not safe to drive. He infomed me that his hands were tied and to contact Mazda. I contacted Mazda and they contacted the sevice manager who had already contacted the regional manager. I was told I would be contacted by him tomorrow November 7th. I have a 15 year old son who has his learners permit and who I strongly believe would not have been able to avoid what could have been a fatal accident. The car is still at the dealership. My Tribute is the first 2002 that they have seen with the problem. Obviously this serious safety problems continues.

Tribute was purchased while "at sea. " 48 hours after Tribute was rolled off the delivery truck the engine shutoff without prior warning while traveling u-hill at 45mph. It shut off again six days later without warning. According to edmunds. Com web site, many other Tribute and Ford escape owners are having the same stalling problem. Hennessey Mazda had 3 Tributes returned to their dealership for same problem prior to my purchase date of 10/30/01. Both hennessey and Mazda corp have refused to give any type of certification or guarantee that the corrective repairs performed on my Tribute on 11/8/01 are the permanent fix.

Our engine just shuts off when you least expect it as you are driving down the road. This results in a loss of brakes and steering. The only way to regain control is to put it in neutral and try to get it started again. Per your customer complaint database and other web sites I have researched, there are a lot of Tributes and escapes doing this. This is a serious safety problem! how many times does this have to be reported before something is done? Mazda continues to make excuses for months now, telling owners, like myself, that they can't duplicate the problem and they can't fix it. They often refuse to give customers copies of repair paperwork when they pick up their vehicle. Does someone have to get killed before this is resolved? my husband almost crashed last week going downhill when this happened the last time. Do something to help Tribute and escape owners!.

Engine periodically shuts down at low rpms. Power steering and power brakes fail when engine shuts down and, as a result, the Tribute is difficult to steer and stop. Shutdowns have happened at least eleven times - always at low rpms (1000 rpm or less). Each shut down occurred when I was coasting downhill. Generally, I was also braking at the same time. The dealership's service department has been extremely diligent in their efforts but so far Mazda has been unable to provide the technical assistance needed to resolve the problem. I bought the Tribute in Jan 2001 and expericed the first failures before the first 3000 mile servicing. The first dealer resolution attempt was not documented. The technician queried the onboard computer but there was no code indicating any failure. On 4/28/02, after more failures, the problem was diagnosed as a wiring problem and "fixed". Three more falilures occurred before the Tribute reached 6000 miles. The dealer could not duplicate but on 8/8/01 advised Mazda. No repairs were made. Engine shutdowns continued and on 10/09/01 at 7,639 miles, the dealer removed the bypass air control valve and cleaned the passageway - as advised by Mazda technical assistance. The Tribute then ran fine for eight months. Then in June 2002, the problem reoccurred and the dealer was contacted. Dealer still had seen nothing further from Mazda concerning resolution of the problem and contacted them once more for assistance. Suggestion was to "re-program" the onboard computer the next time the car is brought in for servicing. This is a dangerous situation and will utlimately result in an accident. So far, shutdowns have occurred while I was in an uncongested area but that is simply luck. Mazda and Ford have a really dangerous situation that needs immediate attention and resolution. So far I have received nothing from Mazda letting me know there is a problem with the Tribute. Guess they feel it is not a problem as long as it can be ignored.
