Failure Date: 01/01/2013

For the past year, the vehicle's accelerator/gas pedal has at times felt "stuck" so that the driver must press down harder than normal to accelerate. Originally the driver was under the impression that the mat was obstructing the gas pedal's ability to be depressed. Over time however, the vehicle has shown an increased difficulty in the gas pedal being depressed. Most recently, on January 23, 2014, the vehicle was idling while in traffic. When the driver attempted to press down on the accelerator, the gas pedal did not move. The driver was forced to press hard on the accelerator, and when doing so, the accelerator became "stuck" and quickly jolted the vehicle forward. The driver had to immediately press down on the brake to avoid collision with the vehicle in front. The speed at the time was less than 15 miles per hour and the driver was able to come to a stop avoiding collision. Since the incident on January 23, the vehicle's gas pedal has increasingly shown more "sticking" and has become very hard to accelerate without applying a great amount of pressure down on the pedal. This causes concern as the vehicle quickly accelerates in a jump-like manner rather than slowly accelerating to a comfortable driving speed. The 2006 Mazda Tribute is a 4 cylinder and the manufacturer has not issued a recall at this time.

Failure Date: 02/27/2012

2004 Mazda Tribute, 6 cylinder. The engine exploded upon starting, specifically the intake manifold. Upon starting, an extremely loud explosion occurred, the hood was raised about an inch and smoke and flame poured out from under the hood. I exited the vehicle and the smoked subsided and plastic parts where scattered about the parking lot. Towed the Tribute to the dealer where they stated that the intake manifold blew up and it would cost over $1000 to repair with no guarantee that the engine is not damaged. The dealer stated that they had no clue what caused the explosion. I was lucky that the car was parked and that my child was not near the car, otherwise this could have been an deadly incident.

Tribute gas pedal is locking (sticking) and unable to be pressed. This problem has occurred several times lately the latest being this morning while taking my child to school trying to go up a hill I was unable to press the gas pedal which I had to abruptly pull over nearly causing an accident and scaring my child and myself. This is occurring more frequently and thus becoming more hazardous. Something needs to be done to correct this problem, it going to cause a serious accident or fatality.

Failure Date: 01/21/2011

While passing a slower vehicle on a two lane road, the Mazda Tribute's accelerator stuck. I let off the gas at 65mph but the engine continued to accellerate to over 4000 rpm and 85 mph. The brakes did little to slow the car(I got it down to 80mph). Trying to raise or move the gas peddle did nothing to change the speed. I was able to shift into neutral gear and as the car slowed down, I applied the hand (emergency) brake and pulled off the road onto a wide shoulder. Starting the engine again later, it started at the previous high rpm's. I called for a tow truck and did not drive it further . I have had problems with the cruise control suddenly accellerating for an instant before returning to normal settings. This has been erratic and cannot be reproduced for the service departments. Two weeks ago, the cruise control started dropping out (turns off) with out warning. The dealer could not replicate the problem. , but replaced a switch without any effect.

Failure Date: 12/27/2010

2008 Mazda Tribute, approx, 72,000 miles. The gas pedal sticks in cold weather. We live in the baton rouge area so it doesn't get cold often, but the last few day's we've had lows in the 20's and the gas pedal has a sticking issue. It's hard to press and when it finally does the vehicle lunges forward. We had this same issue last year when it also got abnormally cold for this area.

When vehicle has been running for less than 10 minutes the accelerator pedal will not depress unless unusual amount of force or tapping of pedal is used.

When the air temp is below 60 degrees, the accelerator sticks upon acceleration. Once this happens, the gas pedal cannot be depressed unless you exert extreme force on it with your foot. This is extremely dangerous if you need to accelerate to cross traffic or similar type of situation. Once the engine warms up, or if the air temp warms up above 60 degrees, the problem willl not occur.

Acceleration pedal stuck in the down position until stomping on it which causes the car to accelerate quickly. This has occurred multiple times in the last few days and I read online that it happens to many other Mazda Tribute owners.

The gas pedal sticks while driving, it loosens up after a few moments, (putting the entire force of my body against pedal will not free it up) . This has happened many times over the past couple of years, but has been happening much more over the last couple of weeks. Also last winter when it was cold at night as I pulled from my parking spot at work the engine seemed to rev suddenly as I pulled away. This would only happen occasionally and I figured it was due to the cold weather but I am not so sure now. I have searched the internet and found this has happened to others. The dealer charges them several hundred dollars to fix the problem. I see that there was a recall for the 2002-2004 Mazda Tribute for the accelerator cable recall 2704l. Is it possible there should be a recall for this model year.

The contact owns a 2008 Mazda Tribute. While traveling at 40 mph, the contact changed lanes to pass a vehicle but when he depressed the accelerator pedal to speed up, the pedal went to the floorboard and the vehicle stalled. The contact was able to restart the vehicle but the engine only raced up and down with no response from the accelerator pedal. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealership and the dealer stated that the air filter and fuel control module had burned out and caused the failure. The current and failure mileages were 25,185. Updated 07/22/10 updated 09/23/10 updated 09/24/10 the consumer no longer owns the vehicle. Updated 09/27/10.

I have a Mazda Tribute 2006 and the gas pedal sticks quite often. Sometimes it happens when I start driving after stopping at a stop sign or a traffic light. It has happened during a ride if I pull the gas pedal to reduce. Are there any other Mazda owners with the same problem?.

May 4, 2008 my 2002 Mazda Tribute (purchased new- and had 60,000 miles) experienced an air intake explosion for no apparent reason and without warning. . I've had regular maintenance and had no problems starting the vehicle prior to the explosion. Mazda can't tell me why this occurred and can't tell me if it will occur in the future. I feel this is a very dangerous thing to occur for no apparent reason. The explosion occurred under the hood, plastic pieces broke and tried to go through the hood of the car and the explosion was very loud and black smoke billowed out from under the hood. Mazda was not willing to cover the cost of the explosion and didn't seem concerned when I reported this incident to them. I wrote the ceo of the company but rec'd a response from his subordinate that didn't address my safety concerns at all. After my second correspondence, Mazda told me that they would consider that my last correspondence on this matter. I had the damage repaired at the dealership and they checked out the car and could not find a cause for the explosion. After the repair, the dealership said they found nothing further wrong.

Just bought a 2003 Mazda Tribute from Toyota of nicholasville 3 weeks ago. Went out to the garage to start it this morning and the thing caught fire. Put it out with fire extinguisher. The air filter area is burned and melted. My wife no longer feels safe driving this vehicle(isn't repaired yet), with our young child strapped in the car seat. I sustained small burns to my hands putting the fire out.

While accelerating, the accelerator gets stuck and the car suddenly slows down to a crawl. Driver has to pull over and pump accelerator in order to get it unstuck. Checked with dealer initially and called Mazda today January 8, 2014 to ask if there have been a recall. Was told, no. In the past, had to take car to mechanic and left it to be test driven in order for mechanic to replicate problem. Mechanic found the problem and cleaned accelerator. Problem continuous sporadically.
