37 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 10/06/2016

I was driving down a paved road, went to make a left hand turn and my esp came on, vehicle shut off and almost ran me into another vehicle, which then caused me to run into the ditch. Now I'm finding out that there is a recall on the sbc unit, which is what's wrong with my car, but the recall is not showing up for my VIN number. I am very, very disappointed/frustrated by mercedes. This is a very expensive part to replace. I should not have to pay out of pocket to fix my car, which is now sitting due to it not starting, especially if other same year vehicles were affected and theirs is covered under the recall. I think the entire situation is ridiculous! I will never own another mercedes!!!.

38 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 10/05/2016

I am an owner of a 2004 Mercedes Benz E320 that I have bought 3 years ago in November. When I purchased the vehicle I elected to also buy a 3 year 36k warranty. Over the past 3 year I have had no to very little trouble with the vehicle and have maintained a very positive and optimistic attitude towards the vehicle never having to utilize the warranty. Well until last week. . . I was driving the vehicle on the interstate when suddenly I lost all braking power out of nowhere. I was petrified and very scared for myself and everyone in the vehicle, only getting a "reduced braking power" notice on the dash after brake loss. Recollecting that if this occurred in heavier traffic we could have been seriously injured and or killed in an accident due to the reaction of the sbc unit that failed in the vehicle. Come to find out my vehicle had a recall for this specific failed unit and Mercedes Benz offered a 10 year 150k mile warranty to fix this issue in the vehicle. Unfortunately by the time that I had purchased the vehicle, had I know this was an issue, I would have only had a short period of time for the unit to fail before I could have taken advantage of this "warranty". . But I was unaware of this issue and honestly would have not purchased the vehicle if I would have known. I commuted with this vehicle 60 miles a day for the last year and even drove it to California over the summer as a family trip, with no negative thoughts or malfunctions. I cannot say that I can drive this vehicle in confidence any longer with the knowledge that I have now of the sbc braking units. My vehicle warranty is no longer valid because my vehicle exceeded mileage. . This issue should be covered by mercedes I should not be held liable for correcting this issue. This is a major saftey issue and is not being address appropriately.

39 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 09/12/2016

I own a 2003 E320 Mercedes Benz with 67,000 miles. I took my car to a dealership and was told my sbc unit needs to be replaced. I was also told that the warranty on this component was extended but is now outside the extended warranty period. Why was not covered by a recall rather than just an extended warranty? this seems to indicate mercedes is acknowledging a faulty component. This appears to potentially affect safety so I would hope mercedes would be eager to replace the sbcs.

40 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 08/20/2016

While driving on the freeway at around 60 mph my instrument message display suddenly turned red, started beeping continuously, and displayed the message "stop break defective stop vehicle". The car had zero breaks, pumping them did no good, and I had to immediately put on my hazards, downshift to slow the car, and pull off the freeway and park using the emergency break to avoid a potentially life threatening accident. While waiting for help I turned the car back on after 15 minutes and everything appeared to be working fine. My car is serviced regularly and very well maintained and it gave no indication of any break problems prior to this failure. It had a full break job at the Mercedes Benz dealer less then 30k miles ago and was serviced for another issue in the last 1. 5 years. At no time were my breaks mentioned as needing maintenance. Mercedes benz is aware of this issue, see "2004 Mercedes Benz e class brake foundation components TSB (bulletin sb-090930)" where it is mentioned. This is a serious life threatening issue that because of the design of the break system is completely unpredictable. My car is not within the 10 year warranty covered in the TSB referenced above. This sbc breaking system should have never been permitted on the road. Mercedes benz realized the mistake and discontinued the use of it after 3 years due to all of the issues. Any car with this system is a ticking time bomb that could put any number of lives at risk with absolutely no warning. At least with a standard break system you have some chance of stopping the car.

41 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320

The contact owns a 2005 Mercedes Benz E320. The contact stated that when the brake pedal was depressed, the vehicle hesitated to respond and an extra effort was needed to stop the vehicle. The failure occurred without warning. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where it was diagnosed that the brake assembly needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 115,000.

42 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 08/07/2016

Car has "sensotronic braking system", sbc, that upon failure renders the car unsafe as only the front wheel brakes will have partial hydraulic power to stop the car. Ref: mb bulletin "s142. 46-p-0012a" failure occurs without prior warning or brake degradation. My car has had several transitory failures as I was driving. Only turning off the key and then back on again did I regain normal braking. Also upon sbc failure the brake pedal almost goes down to the floor with a functioning reversion to "hydraulic mode. " Mercedes Benz should immediately recall and replace all sbc units ASAP to eliminate this "time bomb. ".

43 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 07/28/2016

The contact owns a 2003 mercedes-benz E320. While driving 30 mph down an incline, a "brakes are defective" message appeared. The contact depressed the brake pedal, but the vehicle did not stop. The contact had to shift into neutral and apply the emergency brake lever to get the vehicle to come to a complete halt. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who diagnosed that the sensatronic module for the brake system needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and stated that the failure was previously repaired per a voluntary recall. The failure mileage was 130,000.

44 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 07/15/2016

The contact owns a 2004 mercedes-benz E320. The contact stated that the brake pedal was depressed and traveled close to the floorboard. The contact stated that the brake pedal required excessive force to stop the vehicle. In addition, the ?brake longer distance visit workshop? warning message appeared in red on the instrument panel. The contact was concerned that the failure could result in a fatal crash. The failure occurred every time the brake pedal was depressed. The vehicle was taken to a dealer where it was diagnosed that the sbc hydraulic unit needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The dealer offered to cover ten percent of the cost, but the offer was declined. The contact referenced NHTSA campaign numbers: 05v133000 (service brakes, hydraulic) and 04v296000 (service brakes, hydraulic). The contact stated that a recall remedy could not be performed unless the vehicle received a service not related to a recall, which was why the manufacturer's recall remedy for the fuel tank was not performed. The contact felt that the failure occurred due to high mileage. The manufacturer stated that there was an extended warranty related to the failure that expired. The failure mileage was 197,000. The VIN was not available.

45 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 07/04/2016

Berberian stockton dealer wants $2,400 to fix the sbc (sensotronic brake control) $740 to fix front brakes. The rep ralph carrasco said the dealership cannot comply with the remedy for recalls as the time period for recalls has expired. Really? repair of faulty brakes expire? I was waiting for the light to turn green when the bright red message "stop! brakes unsafe stop the car immediately" [ can't recall exact verbatim]. To stop the car because the brakes had become unsafe to drive . The car froze up, restarts but will not shift gear to drive. Why does mb sell outageously expensive but defective cars? what about consumer protection law? NHTSA (national highway traffic safety) published on 4/05/2005 this sbc issue as mercedes-benz recall no. 2004 050014. The recall began on October 21, 2004. Owners should contact mercedes-benz at 1-800-367-6372. Nhtsa summarized the recall on certain vehicles, the electronic monitoring system of the sensotronic brake control (sbc) is designed to monitor the pressure gradient within the high pressure line of the brake system. If an unacceptable pressure gradient is detected, the system will switch, as it is designed to do, into the hydraulic function mode. Hazard: if vehicles are not routinely serviced and have extremely high mileage combined with a high number of brake actuations, or frequency, the pump motor of the sbc may run out of permissible tolerances, thereby triggering the hydraulic function mode. . 46 Service Brakes problem of the 2002 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 04/25/2016

On April 25, 2016, I noticed that a white brake system indicator light came on while the engine was running. I was driving on a city street at about 10 mph in traffic. Despite the white warning light, the foot brakes still held. It said "service brakes , visit workshop". I immediately drove to the sole authorised agent in trinidad, who ran some diagnostic tests on the car. They indicated that I needed to replace the defective sbc unit at an approximate cost of usd 3,000. 00 plus usd 365. 00 for labor. This, I could not afford as the total cost is quite exorbitant and surprising. After leaving the dealership and towards driving home, the red brake system indicator now lit up and I heard a loud warning signal. The warning sign said to stop the car, which I immediately did and managed to park the car at a friend's home as I could not reach my home. The car now had very little or no foot brakes and I had to depress the brake pedal right down in order to stop the car. I was driving at about 10mph in city traffic and this "no brakes" situation resulted in extreme danger to both me, my wife, pedestrians and other traffic. I was later informed that these sbc units were found to be defective and were previously recalled by Mercedes Benz, but I as an owner was never notified. In addition, the sole agents in trinidad for Mercedes Benz is refusing to honor the recall and change the sbc unit free of charge. I need urgent assistance in this matter either from Mercedes Benz USA or Mercedes Benz germany as I am a hapless victim of this Mercedes Benz sbc recall. Please note that even though the car was purchased new in September 2005, it has barely completed 58,000 miles. Since the car was bought, it has only been maintained and serviced by the sole Mercedes Benz agent in trinidad. Mercedes benz recall number 2005070007 and 2005110001 and/or 2004050014.

56 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 10/06/2015

This vehicle is equipped with sensotronic brake control that has a service threshold. When this threshold is reached the brake system defaults to non power assisted hydraulic mode to the front wheels only. This occurs without any prior warning and results in increased stopping distance. . Mercedes stopped installing this system in 2006. At the very least, mercedes should issue a mandatory recall to interrogate these vehicles with star das to determine how close to the service threshold the sbc unit is and replace them at the dealer's expense. This is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed.

57 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 10/03/2015

While driving on the highway, the (sbc) systems failed with a red stop sign on the dash board. I managed to bring the car to a complete stop by pushing the pedal all the way to the floor with no resistance and applying the emergency brake with my left foot simultaneously. It was a scary experience as it was a stormy late night with 10% visibility due to the rain. I managed to park/towed the car to my house and it has been in my drive way ever since the incident. This vehicle is equipped with sensotronic brake control (sbc) that has a service threshold. When this threshold is reached the brake system defaults to non power assisted hydraulic mode to the front wheels only. This occurs without any prior warning and results in increased stopping distance. I have sent a copy of the mercedes service bulletin s142. 46-p-0012a which addresses this issue. Mercedes stopped installing this system in 2006. 58 Service Brakes problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 09/03/2015

While driving I got this warning " brake service brake visit workshop. (color black)" I went to a certified Mercedes Benz shop and got a computer diagnosis stating that the problem was in the power supply accumulation of the sensotronic brake control (sbc) and was advised to take the car to a dealer, I never received from mercedes-benz a letter about a recall of this problem.

59 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 08/12/2015

When I'm stoping the car, the breaks did not work as it should, and the stop distance increased by 50% !! on August 10th I was in the on the way between charlotte and nashville, in the mountains curves way down, I used the breaks, the car almost got out of control. . . . I felt like the front and rear breaks don't do any synchronization to stop the car, its making the car losing control on the curves. . . . . I red on this issue on internet I found that mercedes has used a new breaking system for this car and stop installing this system it in 2006! the reason why they stop using this because it 100% electronic breaks system, it called sbc (sensotronic brake control ) when this threshold is reached the brake system defaults to non power assisted hydraulic mode to the front wheels only. This occurs without any prior warning and results in increased stopping distance. I have sent a copy of the mercedes service bulletin s142. 46-p-0012a which addresses this issue. Mercedes stopped installing this system in 2006. At the very least, mercedes should issue a mandatory recall to interrogate these vehicles with star das to determine how close to the service threshold the sbc unit is and replace them at the dealer's expense. 60 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 06/13/2015

Vehicle presented with red light indicating to take vehicle to workshop in red. Braking was extremely difficult, srs system stalled the vehicle, emergency mode was activited,we were unable, at first to turn on the ignition switch. The vehicle operated as if it was paralyzed. We finally got the vehicle to run and reset the code by turning the steering wheel. The vehicle is very dangerous to drive if you are not prepared for longer stopping distances, thankfully my husband was able to get the vehicle to the dealership. I found myself not strong enough to press on the brake pedal for adequate braking distance. This car left me with no brakes at all driving with children in the car. This I'd not safe!.

61 Service Brakes problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 06/08/2015

The contact owns a 2007 mercedes-benz E320. The contact stated that when the dealer (rbm of atlanta, inc, 7640 roswell rd, atlanta, GA 30350, (770) 390-0700) sold the vehicle, the contact was not informed that it was included in a manufacturer service campaign for the sbc pump. In addition, while approaching a stop, the vehicle stalled and a red warning indicator illuminated. The vehicle was unable to be driven. The police had to assist the contact with coasting the vehicle off the road due to the failure. The manufacturer was notified of the failure and the dealer (mercedes-benz of sarasota, 4754 clark rd, sarasota, FL 34233, (941) 275-1293) advised that the vehicle be towed for diagnostic testing. The vehicle was towed to an independent mechanic who serviced the vehicle. 62 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 05/25/2015

With less than 90k miles, the hydraulic brake pump went out. Mbusa knew about issues with the part and extended its warrant until 12/24/2014 but did not notify affected vehicle owners.

63 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 05/11/2015

While driving to work the vehicle displayed several warnings of problems with sbc, abs, esp. The brakes then required a great deal of pressure to effectively stop the vehicle and the vehicle became much harder to steer. After pulling off the highway and placing the transmission in park, I was unable to get the transmission out of park. The vehicle was taken to my mechanic where they diagnosed a problem with the sbc,and esp modules. I have discovered that this is a common occurrence with Mercedes Benz vehicles with this braking system, so much so that the discontinued using it. This creates an extremely dangerous situation for the drivers of these vehicles and mercedes should either repair all effected vehicles or remove them from the road.

64 Service Brakes problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 05/08/2015

This vehicle is equipped with sensotronic brake control that has a service threshold. When this threshold is reached the brake system defaults to non power assisted hydraulic mode to the front wheels only. This occurs without any prior warning and results in increased stopping distance. Look for mercedes service bulletin s142. 46-p-0012a which addresses this issue. Mercedes stopped installing this system in 2006. At the very least, mercedes should issue a mandatory recall to interrogate these vehicles with star das to determine how close to the service threshold the sbc unit is and replace them at the dealer's expense. This is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed.

65 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 05/07/2015

I received the red dash warning at the same time as the complete braking failure (not before) and there was maybe 2% braking capability remaining (useless hydraulic fail safe). That's with the pedal on the firewall at 5 mph. Even with force enough to push the pedal into the firewall it was still a gradual slow down. This was at around 5 mph! now imagine coming off a steep off ramp from 70mph that ends abruptly and perpendicular to a busy intersection when this happens. . . Not good. After sitting in the car off for a few minutes I decided to start the car up again, the message was gone and full braking pressure restored. Talk about a game of russian roulette, I have no idea when this time bomb is set to go off again. This is not even remotely acceptable and is incredibly dangerous. Mercedes knew this and moved back to a standard braking system in 2006 leaving very little assistance to those with the sbc modules installed. These should be replaced by dealers at their expense indefinitely. It was a terrible mistake and they admit it, now it's time to take responsibility for those with malfunctioning units and save some lives. Check mercedes service bulletin s142. 46-p-0012a for more information.

66 Service Brakes problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 04/09/2015

This vehicle is equipped with sensotronic brake control that has a service threshold. When this threshold is reached the brake system defaults to non power assisted hydraulic mode to the front wheels only. This occurs without any prior warning and results in increased stopping distance. I do believe that this issue is relayed in the mercedes service bulletin s142. 46-p-0012a which addresses this issue. Mercedes stopped installing this system in 2006. I purchased the vehicle in December of 2007 as a used vehicle with aprox. 40,000 miles. I have not been sent anything from mbenz notifying of this issue. Vehicle put in shop 4-16-20015 at mercedes. Diagnois was faulty sbc pump system at a cost for repair $2400. 00. At the very least, mercedes should issue a mandatory recall to interrogate these vehicles with star das to determine how close to the service threshold the sbc unit is and replace them at the dealer's expense. This is a major safety issue that needs to be addressed. Lastly, passenger air bag light has been on since shortly after purchasing the vehicle. Known as the srs system. This issue is spelled out as a major safety concern in mercedes e class operator's manual, told by mercedes service dept, this is a $800. 00 bill to have repaired. Question,, does something tragic have to happen before, Mercedes Benz live up to their obligation of keeping those who purchase their vehicle,,,,,safe.

68 Service Brakes problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E320

Failure Date: 02/28/2015

The well known brake safety issue of numerous mb cars, also called the sbc system, is cycling way to often and fear its past is predetermined "life cycles". For some reason mb puts a # of actuations on the system before is quites or must be replaced. Mb has instructed dealers to not replace the system unless a particular code shows up under a diagnostic read. Problem is that from the dealer own service techs. . . . . 'failing pumps don't always throw a code that will be stored in the computer, or there is a reset facility built into the computer self diagnostic system that is to reset a code for issues with the sbc system when car is cycled off then restarted. ' mb refuses to fix such safety issue if repair is needed beyond their 10 year warranty period. For secondary owners the repairs that are needed for the safety of occupants of the car and all those around them presents an issue. This is such a safety issue that mb quickly stopped producing vehicles with the new braking system even after they had touted this as being the next break through in braking for all their vehicle line. They know it is a safety issue which is why they moved away from producing it further. The problem is they are not being held responsible for replacing all 'sbc' braking systems which have an inherent defect for failures. A non safety issue I can understand a warranty recall expiration, but not for something like this.
