1 Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 12/15/2013

I own a 2003 mercedes E500. 100, 000 miles and I can smell heavy gas fumes from both interior and exterior of my car. The cars rearleft driverside has extreme gas vapor fumes coming from fueltank area behind right rear wheel. Since I've noticed the heavy fuel odors, the car has been parked because its unsafe transportation for my wife and daughters. Inhaling the fuel smell is dangerous enough. I'm interested in knowing if filing a complaint or claim is possible and I also want to know if there are any recalls or can the mercedes dealer help with options to fix my car? any positive answers will be appreciated. Thank you.

2 Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 05/30/2013

For the past several months after filling the vehicle a strong gas smell/fumes are present in the vehicle. The smell/fumes subside when approximately 1/4 of the fuel in the tank has been used. On Friday may 31st 2013 the vehicle was filled with fuel. Parked the vehicle in the garage Friday night and was knocked over by gas smell/fumes on Saturday morning, June 1st 2013. The vehicle was parked outside overnight. After researching the issue, I found fuel around the sending unit under the drive side back seat. The fuel was removed and the sending unit cleaned. The sending unit was observed see if a leak could be detected on the unit. The leak is at the top part of the sending unit. The part where the small wire plug is attached to the sending unit. It looks like this part is "glued" to the body of the sending unit. Short term fix is to only fill the fuel tank half way. This hazard, if not rectified by the manufacture makes mine and all other vehicles unsafe and un-sellable on the used car market.

5 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 03/26/2012

I recently noticed in my 2006 E500 4matic that after I put a full tank of gas in the car, there is a strong odor of gas coming from the rear driver side back seat. My car is garage kept and once I enter the garage in the morning to go to work, its very strong odor of gas. I am concerned that there is a gas leak of some sort. I have a 2 1/2 year old son that sits behind the driver side rear seat. This gas leak smell has happened to over several hundred eclass vehicles.

6 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 01/03/2012

After filling up the vehicle and driving for a short period of time ,I parked the car in my garage . When I came back to the car the whole garage smelled like gasoline. After further inspection I did not see any gas leaking. When I get in the car the car smells like gas on the inside. So I drive it until the gas runs to like 1/4 of the tank thinking the smell goes away. The smell is still there and is unbearable. The car sits in the garage for a couple of months now and still reek of gas smell. The kids and wife will not go in there cause the smell is that bad!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

7 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 08/24/2011

Fuel smell inside cabin after refilling to 100% capacity. Only goes away once car has crossed 3/4 tank which is normally about 75 miles. There have been hundreds of complaints just like this, I have had it looked into as much as I could, but could not afford to have my mechanic pull the fuel tank to diagnose further. This needs to be looked into and fixed. Normally mercedes is excellent when it comes to safety issues, I'd think they'd take this a bit more seriously. This investigation is related to action number pe12001.

8 Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 02/28/2011

Strong smell of gasoline every time I fill up and until I drive about 50 miles. I was told by a german auto repair shop that it is a cracked gas tank and that this is a systemic problem with mercedes e-class models from 2003-2005. The smell appears to be emanating from the rear passenger driver's side. I have also been told there was a recall for this exact issue in europe and asia but that mercedes never issued a recall in the us for this issue despite being extremely pervasive. I drive my children in this car and I am increasingly concerned about this dangerous situation. The repair price I was quoted was about $2400. This seems like it should be a mercedes problem, not a consumer problem. Nobody should expect their gas tank to crack at any point!.

9 Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 01/12/2011

Strong gas odor from left rear wheel area after filling tank fully. Stops leaking fuel when tank reaches about 3/4 full.

12 Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 07/05/2010

There was strong gas odor after filling up the car with gas. The rear passenger side would smell of gas until the gas tank reached below approximately 70% levels. After parking in the garage, it smelled as there was a gas leak. This would not occur if the we didn't fill up the gas tank.

13 Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E500

Failure Date: 10/05/2009

I took my car 2005 E500 for regular maintenance at the dealer and was told the ball bearings needed to be replaced in July 2011. Then after checking everything out, the dealer told me the fuel ring under the seat needs to be replaced. Cost usd 600. Also there was gasoline seeping out of car onto the driveway when car was parked. I started smelling gasoline smell in March 2012. I took the car again to the dealership in July 2012 and this time they replaced the fuel system. Cost usd 2100. There were puddles of gasoline in my garage after the service. I was told there might be gasoline smell. After the smell lingered after every fillup I took the car back to dealership. The dealership again wanted to charge me usd 3000 for the fuel leak but I told them I just fixed the fuel leak problem. This was in sept 2012. This time the dealership didn't charge me anything. I again took my car to the dealership for a check engine light that came on in sept 2013 to Mercedes Benz in grapevine, TX. I was told there is a leak in the fuel tank and the cost is usd 2115. I told the dealer about the NHTSA investigation, class action lawsuit for the fuel system on mercedes E500 vehicles and the service advisor, matt pinecrest, told me the case was settled and mercedes won. This is obviously a falsehood. This problem has now taken an emotional toll on me since I can't drive my car properly without worrying.
