36 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 08/03/2013

Strong smell of gas inside the cabin of the car while idling. My wife and I picked up our children from the baby sitter's residence. I left the car idling in the driveway of her residence. Upon returning to the vehicle, we noticed a strong smell of gas inside of the cabin of the car, especially in the back seat. After removing the back seat, I removed the covers for the fuel sending units and noticed that there was a pool of gasoline covering the outside of the fuel sending unit. After doing research on the topic, I came across at least 80 documented cases of the same or similar issues filed under ea13003. I would like to add my vehicle to this complaint in hopes of garnering action on the part of mbusa to remedy the problem. The cdc recognizes the dangers especially in children to prolonged exposure to gas fumes. Help!.

Failure Date: 05/27/2013

Drivers side fuel delivery unit as well as passengers side had developed fuel leaks inside cabin of vehicle. This issue has been addressed before by mercedes and has reoccurred. The problem occurs when the plastic cracks on the fuel sending units and gasoline leaks into the cabin of the vehicle and emits fumes that are dangerous.

42 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 05/01/2013

The fuel sending units under the back seat were leaking fuel directly into the passenger compartment. The floor mats were soaked with gasoline and the foam insulation under the rear seat, and the foam in the rear seat soaked up gasoline from the leaking fuel sending units. The sending units were replaced by the mercedes dealer at a high cost (a little over four thousand dollars). Over a year later, with lots of baking soda, odor killers, and leaving the seat out of the car with a fan on it for two weeks, the odor is still strong in the car. Probably the only real fix would be to replace the rear seat, the carpeting on the floor, the mats, and the insulation under the rear seat. The cost to do so would be high. Mercedes should recall these cars and own up to their problem. I have no doubt that any spark near the floor or bottom of the rear seat would have caused a major fire. Luckily, that did not happen.

43 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 04/10/2013

44 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 04/08/2013

When I fill up there is a strong smell of gasoline inside the cabin of the car. This made me dizzy and nauseous and could have lead to losing control of the vehicle. It also is an emission violation for mercedes to sell their cars in this country with serious safety and emission defects like these "high end" cars have. Please be our advocate and make mercedes pay for their failure to engineer a sound file system.

45 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 03/27/2013

Persistent strong odor of gasoline after refueling.

46 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised him that both fuel sending units needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not contacted. The failure and current mileages was approximately 57,000.

47 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 03/14/2013

Fuel sending units under the rear bench seat are leaking gas and filling the cabin with toxic fumes. I am unable to have my family in the vehicle and even driving with the windows down does little for venting out all the fumes. At least 10 ounces has accumulated under the seat and soaked the carpeting.

48 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 02/03/2013

Same situation identified in pe-12-001. Filled vehicle with fuel and left sitting in driveway. The next day, I noticed a strong fuel odor outside of vehicle and, upon opening the driver's door, was overwhelmed with fuel odor. After a quick online search, I found multiple references to fuel filter leak. I pulled out the back seat to investigate and found that the driver's side fuel filter assembly is fine, but passenger's side has approx 1/2 inch of liquid fuel standing in the filter assembly. Fuel has soaked through the cardboard/rubber cover and soaked the insulation above. It appears that the driver's side filter assembly was previously replaced (this was confirmed with service dept at dealership. They state that it was replaced in 2008 as part of TSB. ), but the passenger's side, which is now leaking, is of a different (and I presume older) design. I have read the response from hogan/lovells dated 4/19/12 and would like to note that the "tight seal" described on page 2 which is allegedly created when the "access ports" are "secured by six bolts and [a] gasket" is not sufficient to prevent fuel vapor from entering the passenger compartment, nor is it sufficient to prevent liquid fuel from soaking through the gasket, and into the insulation on the underside of the rear seat. Once the gasket and insulation above it are saturated with fuel, the interior of the car is unbearable and probably a severe fire risk. Nhtsa is welcome to come observe this in person on my vehicle.

49 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 02/01/2013

Interior of the car smells like gas. When I pulled off the rear seat the bottom of the seat actually smells of fuel. I drove without the rear seat in place to dinner. After placing leftovers on the passenger seat the food I had brought in the house then smelled of gas in a 15 minutes drive. I contacted mb of bloomfield hills,mi and they stated there is no such recall for fuel smell issues even though I know of a 40 page post by mbworld that almost all E55 owners are experiencing this issue.

50 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 11/14/2012

Strong gas smell after filling up to max each time, both outside and inside of the car. Gas smell only go away when the first bar of gas meter is gone. Not safe to park the car in the garage it might caught on fire.

52 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 11/07/2012

I get a gas smell outside the car only after I fill up the car with gas. I do not tap it off I wait until the gas pump cuts off. The gas smell only last until the 1st bar is gone on the gauge.

53 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 10/15/2012

Today I start the car and the check engine appears. I went to the dealer and scan the car. The code was p0456 and we notice a hard smell of fuel. Then I entered the code in google and began to search about this problem and saw that a few members have the same problem and they put a complain on it. So im filling the same complaint that they do.

54 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 10/05/2012

Recall that was performed in 3/7/2008 has failed. Fuel leaking under back seat.

55 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 10/03/2012

In the original instance, which happened about 3 years ago, every time that I would do a complete fill up with gas, the car would smell like gas horribly in the cabin as well as outside the car. After that started happening, I refrained from filling the car up completely to avoid the problem. The problem has returned and my car has roughly 132000 miles on it. I filled up my car and noticed a horrible gas smell. I looked under the car and noticed very large puddles of gas literally running away from my car. My car is leaking gas profusely only upon complete fill up. It is coming from beneath the car under what would be the rear passenger's seat, nearly in line with the rear wheels. This item was supposedly repaired once before by the mercedes dealership in bakersfield, CA. I paid for the entire repair if I remember correctly.

56 Other Fuel System problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 10/03/2012

Car developed strong fuel smell inside cabin. During 100k miles service, dealer suggested possible future replacement of fuel sending unit at customer's expense. After service visit to dealer, fuel smell inside cabin became stronger and rear seat was removed by customer and discovered fuel fluid accumulating beneath rear seat. Inspection cover was removed and the sending unit was found leaking fuel from top cover of sending unit through a crack on it. Fuel leak is confirmed to generate through a hairline crack at top of sending unit. It is not from seals or threaded cover.

57 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 10/02/2012

Filled vehicle with fuel and left sitting in garage. The next day, I noticed a strong fuel odor outside of vehicle and, upon opening the driver's door, was overwhelmed with fuel odor. After a quick online search, I found multiple references to fuel filter/pump leak. I pulled out the back seat to investigate and found that the driver's side fuel filter/pump assembly is flooded in and around the retaining nut. This is a major safety issue.

58 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 10/02/2012

2004 E55. Fuel sending unit is leaking visible gas under rear seat. Vivid gas smell in interior. 2004 E55. I understand there have been many many complaints about this specific problem yet it still to be recalled. I don't feel safe on long road trips or the car burning down. Reference NHTSA action number: pe12001.

Filled up with premium fuel then drove home and parked car in driveway. Entered car the next morning and was overwhelmed by gas fumes. This is the second incident in 3 months.

61 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 09/10/2012

The fuel sensor failed, resulting if fuel leaks. There are many reports and mercedes denies the problem. Amazing that such a big safety issue is being ignored and denied by mercedes. This is so prevalent, in a pretty rare car, that my dealer stocks the repair parts. Even my service adviser was surprised they did. In reading mercedes' response to the investigation, it is almost a joke. They claim that since this isn't directly related to the recall, there isn't an issue. That make absolutely no sense. Perhaps it isn't related to the recall, but you have 50+ complaints for a car where around 1,500 were imported. Estimating 1 in 10 people actually complain that means that 1/3 of the cars have the problem. If it is 1 in 20, than 2/3rds have the problem. At $1000+ to fix, mercedes is making a ton of money on their failure.

62 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 09/07/2012

My car starting smelling strongly of gasoline in the interior. I brought it to a local repair center and had the sending unit gasket replaced. About 2 weeks later, the smell had not abated and I had the same repair re-performed under repair warranty. This was again not successful. I then researched the issue in greater detail online and found many people complaining of the same issue. I brought it to the mercedes dealership, where they ultimately replaced the sending unit/hoses at a cost of about $1200. They confirmed there was a pool of gasoline just under the rear seat. This issue has caused gasoline to seep into the back seats.

63 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 09/05/2012

Complaint # pe12001 I noticed occasional fuel smell originally 2-3 months ago. Initially smells were mild, now smells are noxious and getting worse. At my last 10k miles oil change, discussed the problem and progression getting worse with my mercedes certified mechanic. The rear seat was removed, to find the upper part of fuel cell under passenger seat, with deterioration of upper part of fuel cell plastic. There was actually a gas "puddle" visible that had seeped through the top of fuel cell/sending unit. Very dangerous situation, risk of fire, and also causing headaches from noxious smell of gas !!! what can be more dangerous, gas leaking, and seeping into the interior cabin of an automobile ??? please intervene with this dangerous problem with a recall before deaths occur to a very dangerous problem. Obviously a manufacturer defect in substandard parts purchased to a fuel cell from manufacturer Mercedes Benz !! this same problem has affected many Mercedes Benz vehicles. Thanking you in advance [xxx].

64 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 08/26/2012

Noticed a gas smell outside of the car when it was sitting still and I looked under the car and fuel had puddles up under it. Opened the doors and noticed a strong fuel smell inside the car. Pulled out the rear seats and lifted up the liner under the seats and noticed fuel was pooled up in the passenger side bowl under the seat. The seal that is bolted down has pushed out and is allowing fuel to come inside the car and has soaked into the liner under the seat. Also the bolt that holds down the sending unit will not screw into the hole due to the bolt hole being stripped out. I am wanting this to aid in the class action lawsuit against Mercedes Benz in the negligence of the fuel system leaks in the 03-06 e series Mercedes Benz cars.

65 Other Fuel System problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 08/17/2012

Reference pe12001 gasoline started pouring inside the passenger compartment under the rear seat bench on the driver's side. Extreme gasoline fumes inside the vehicle. Check engine light turned on at the same time of incident. Issue is ongoing. Called Mercedes Benz of bloomfield hills and explained the issue. They told me that the recall 2008020001 was done on this car in 2008. But that the recurrent problem "fix" would be out of my pocket. I called mbusa and documented my complain but they would take no action. This is a well known and recurrent issue with the e class w211 Mercedes Benz from 2003 - on. Cars that have been "fixed" start dumping fuel into the cabin within the next 10,000 miles or so. All it would take is to drive over a lit up cigarette at low speed and the occupants can be in danger of bodily injuries or death. ## VIN passed ## 2003 Mercedes Benz E55 amg ##.

66 Other Fuel System problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 07/25/2012

On three separate occasions the entire interior of the car has smelled of fuel. There is no evidence of fuel leaking on the ground during these events. The smell was most evident after driving on the highway and noticed when coming to stop. The smell is strongest inside the car and is very worry some. I have found several similar stories which can be found in the following link on mbworld. . Read more...

Failure Date: 07/19/2012

My parent filled up the car and parked in garage. Upon returning to the garage, they experienced the strong smell of gasoline filling the garage. Their home heating system is contained in a space attached to the garage so they have safety concerns about an apparent fuel leak.

69 Other Fuel System problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 04/02/2012

When filling up my vehicle with fuel I have noticed that for the first few days there is a strong fuel smell coming from inside and outside the car. I work in the automotive field by trade and upon short investigation I have noticed that raw fuel is leaking from the top of the fuel sending unit and pooling up under the back seats where the access panels are located. This raw fuel can and will drip onto a hot exhaust pipe creating a not only dangerous but potentially fatal scenario. I have been forced to keep the fuel level at half full to prevent any spill over outside the car and into the cabin. What I have read on enthusiast sites I am one of hundreds that have claimed this same issue.
