36 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 01/13/2013

The fuel sending units eventually get cracks which allow fuel to leak and pool throughout the rear of the car. This issue has been addressed on my car twice previously. May 2010 both fuel sending units replaced and fuel ring ($2200) Feb 2012 both fuel sending units replaced and the ring again (only $1953 this time) I have begun smelling fuel again so I know the problem has returned for a 3rd time. This smell is noted at home away from any fuel sources. I have a 500hp car that stores fuel outside of the fuel tank. . . . Its like I'm driving around a molotov cocktail.

37 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 01/09/2013

Fuel system developed leak, making it necessary to replace the fuel tank. Leakage still is occurring, however.

38 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 12/03/2012

This car has the fuel tanks replaced in the past under warranty and now, when you fill the tank up, it leaks and the interior is overcome with gas fumes. The car is virtually undrivable due to the fumes. Upon removing the back seats, there appears to be standing fuel at the fuel sending units for each of the two tanks along with cracks in the plastic on the units. After letting the car sit with the windows open and baking soda in the back seat area for a week, I have been able to resume driving the vehicle although the fuel smell is still noticeable. The only resolution that I could find for this, outside of replacing the tanks again (mercedes has clearly stated they will not cover this as the car is out of warranty) is to fill the car up with only 3/4 tank of gas, being careful to never fill the tank completely. This appears to be a manufacturers defect and a serious safety issue that must be addressed. Due to the high cost of new tanks/sending units, I am not in a position to replace them with what may end up being yet another defective part from Mercedes Benz. The proposed resolution would be for mercedes to replace these parts with components that is re-designed and will not fail with the frequency of the current oem parts.

39 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 10/05/2012

Strong fuel smell from the driver's rear side of the car, trunk and inside the car. My wife filled the car with close to full tank due to recent CA gas prices jumping 50c in one week. I have tried to ventilate the vehicle and park outside, but the smell is still very strong. There needs to be recall for the failing tank or sender unit.

40 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 09/28/2012

Please reference the NHTSA action# pe12001. I filled the tank until the pump shut off automatically and did not add any additional fuel beyond that. I parked the car in home garage and waited for 10 minutes there is strong gasoline smell filled in the garage. Checking around the vehicle no visible leak underneath. The interior had a strong fuel smell on the back seats. I am a house wife, taking my one year old baby with this vehicle every day. I am not comfortable for my baby seating with strong fuel smell on the back seats. However, I went back to the Mercedes Benz dealer, they can't do anything about it.

41 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 09/22/2012

I walked in my garage and smelt a bad fuel smell coming from my car. After review, I determined it was my fuel sending unit that was leaking from the top and fuel was rolling down the outside of the gas tank. After looking online to see if others with the same vehicle have had this problem and to my findings, this is a normal thing that happens with these vehicles. I know this is not safe for the environment, so I thought I should file this complaint. They should take better precautions for this not to happen. Now we are stuck having to pay a lot of money to get this replaced or fixed, when this is not a normal wear and tear item on the car. I believe they should have a recall on this item, because it is unsafe and hazardous.

42 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 09/17/2012

There is a strong fuel odor inside and outside the car after fueling. The odor will last until the fuel gauge gets below the full level. The dealer said it was a known issue but no recall has been ordered yet. They told me it would be a $2000 repair to replace the fuel tank and both fuel senders. I have no choice but to wait for a recall to fix this issue caused by a violation of safety and epa laws.

43 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 09/12/2012

In hot weather or when I put more than half tank of gas in my car, I have very strong fuel smell outside the car and fuel drops under the car and smell inside. I've checked with the dealer, they've said that recall on my car was fixed by the previous owner and that's the end of it. But I don't feel safe driving it, since it happen first time, my kids and my wife are nor allowed to drive with me. I only use it myself to go to work and back.

Tl- the contact owns a 2004 Mercedes Benz E55. The contact stated that while traveling 25 mph the check engine warning light illuminated. The contact also mentioned that fuel fumes were emitted inside of the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer diagnose that the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The failure mileage was 50,200 and the current mileage was 51,000. Pmb.

45 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 08/24/2012

The fuel tank leaks from the upper vent when fuel tank is full. There is a plastic connection that a hose connects to that is under the fuel level when full. This fitting is plastic welded to the tank and will eventually fail on every 211 chassis Mercedes Benz ever made. (I was an ase master mechanic that specialized in mercedes repair for over 13 years. ).

46 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 08/23/2012

Gas fumes from inside car caused wife and daughter to become sick and nauseas (daughter has asthma). Dropped off vehicle at scottsdale schumacher european for repair or replacement on August 23th, 2012. I filed a written complaint with mercedes-benz at the same time of delivery. Received back a written letter from customer retention manager/simon knott on September 5th, 2012 denying/ refusing refund or replacement. On sept 11th, 2012 I picked up and paid $1167. 00 for labor to replace fuel tank and assembly (dealership did not charge for parts). On August 23rd, 2013 the fuel system is once again causing unbearable gas fumes inside car. The fumes are so strong that any spark may indeed set the car ablaze,.

47 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 08/14/2012

Fuel sender leaking. Filled gas tank, drove on freeway for approx 120 miles. Arrived at destination to find that the rear seat cushion is warm to the touch - lifted up rear seat foam cushion, found that the metal underneath is too hot to touch with bare hands. Removed access cover to fuel sender, found fuel leakage.

48 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

Check engine light remains on. Potent fuel smell present when gas tank filled above 3/4. Fumes are noxious and present inside the vehicle. Burning plastic-like scent also frequent even when tank not filled above 3/4. Vehicle may vibrate or hesitate while moving, may jerk unexpectedly forward when stopped even with brakes fully applied. Any leaking fuel a potential fire hazard due to sparking or friction common in moving vehicles.

49 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

When I fill the gas tank with fuel ( 91 octane gas), there is a strong odor of said gasoline. When I park it in my closed garage, the smell is strong enough that I'm afraid a spark from the water heater, or even the electric motor that opens the garage could trigger an explosion. Simply opening the door that leads from the garage to the house, fills much of the in house area with the smell of gasoline. Driving is also a concern, due to the fact that I don't know where the gas is leaking from, (other than somewhere on the gas tank) or if it could drip on a hot part or come in contact with an electrical component. Once the fuel tank is below 2/3, the odor drops significantly. Note: I had this same problem when the car was one year old and, after 5 tries by the dealer, was finally diagnosed and fixed under warranty.

50 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 07/24/2012

Everytime I fill my car with gas there is a strong fuel smell in the car. I took the back seat out and there is a pool of fuel there as well as under the car. I don't ever fill my car up more than 3/4 a tank otherwise the fuel leaks into the cabin and gives me a strong odor. Please help!!!.

51 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

Began noting a strong gas smell inside my vehicle after refueling. On investigation the back seat foam was completely saturated from a leak at the seal on the top of the gas tank under the seat. Resulted in a costly repair bill. At the time I read online of many, many similar situations experienced by other mb amg E55 owners, as well as their frustration that mb was not taking any responsibility for this. Thus, I was forced to pay for the repairs myself. No problem since, although I am hesitant to fill the tank completely as many report a reoccurrence a couple years after their initial repair. Please advise if mb recognizes this apparent defect and issues a recall. Thank you.

52 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

Nhtsa action number: pe12001 bought the vehicle used 05/2012 with 95,000 miles. The vehicle has a strong odor of gasoline from rear seat area, strong odor of gasoline from under the vehicle, also if left overnight in closed garage (with fuel tank full), garage smells of gas. I have removed the metal fuel sender access cover under the rear seat and found a pool of gas, approx 20z around the electrical connector (have photos of this).

53 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 06/01/2012

Strong odor of gasoline in passenger compartment. After conducting internet research, I have discovered that many other mercedes owners are experiencing the same issue and have learned it is a faulty gas tank.

54 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 05/16/2012

The contact owns a 2005 Mercedes Benz E55. The contact stated that after refueling, a gasoline odor was present inside the vehicle and inside the garage where the vehicle was parked. The contact had the vehicle diagnosed by an independent mechanic, who determined that the fuel sender unit was faulty and replaced the component. The failure later recurred and the vehicle was taken to the dealer. The dealer advised that the fuel sending unit had malfunctioned a second time, and both the fuel sending unit and the fuel tank needed to be replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was notified of the failure. The failure mileage was 65,000.

55 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 05/07/2012

Each time I fill up my E55 with gas there is an extremely strong odor of gasoline fumes. It seems to go away at about 3/4 tank or less. The car is parked in the garage at night and when I go out there, the entire garage smells of gasoline. I feel the only thing to do is to not fill the car past the 3/4 tank level. I will bring it to mercedes but from what I've heard it's a default on the cars fuel tank costing hundreds of dollars to repair. I also believe it's only a matter of time until something terrible happens out there caused by gasoline fumes and perhaps some type of igniter resulting in serious injury or death. Why has mercedes not stepped up and issue some type of recall ? at this point I just want my car fixed and I am not alone. This is a disaster waiting to happen.

56 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

The NHTSA complaint number is pe12001 there have been a lot of owners with the problem of fuel smell inside the car related to a failing fuel sending and leaking fuel tank in the w211 model e-class Mercedes Benz (2003-2009) (see provided link below). My car is a 2005 and has begun to smell like fuel inside the cabin. Mercedes benz will not take responsibility for these failures and as a result, have created a dangerous situation for the owners of these automobiles. I refuse to pay for these failures out of pocket and expect the government to side with the owners on this recall, component failures and utmost disrespect and lack of attention from Mercedes Benz. . 57 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 04/30/2012

There is a fuel leak at or near the top of the fuel tank assembly. Mercedes states this is not a widespread issue but after further research this is happening with all e-class models built in 2005. There is a gas odor that permeates the car and mercedes refuses to take responsibility. This is a very costly item and I spent $95,000 on my car and it is defective.

58 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 03/22/2012

I noticed a gas smell in my car. I didn't know where it originated from. I arranged for my local mercedes dealership service to fix the problem. I had the car in the shop twice. First time they thought they fixed it and upon returning home I noticed the smell didn't go away. It turned out they only fixed part of the problem and I returned the car to the shop where they discovered the complete problem with gas leaking under the rear seats and it was puddling on top of the fuel tank. My total cost to repair issue was approx $1,200 since the car was out of warranty. Oh, I was the first owner and the car was always maintained by the dealership. Shortly after the repair was completed I was notified the dealership was being sold and was offer a large discount to trade this car in for a new mercedes s550. I believe I can obtain a copy of the bills as it is a little over a year since the repairs have been completed. I do not know if they delete all previous repairs work orders if I sold the car. . . . Hum?.

59 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2006 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 12/02/2011

Sender unit leaked under back seat. Pressure valve failed in fuel tank. I had to pay to replace defective parts. Pool of gasoline under read seat. Strong odor of gas when the car was filled up. Local dealer goodilled part of the repair due to my constant business and pervious purchases.

60 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 10/01/2011

My car has had a recall once for gas smell and puddle under car when parked over night. Took it back to mercedes for same issue they smelled the overwhelming gas smell in the car and told me that the recall was already done and I would have to pay to replace the same parts again. This is very dangerous and I see that complaint number pe12001 has been filed so I'm not the only I e with this issue. I can't put more than one half tank of gas in my car or the [xxx] smell kills me. Also it leake gas and leaves a puddle where the car is parked. Coming from tank under back seat. 61 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 09/30/2011

Each time I fill the vehicle with gasoline, especially until the tank is full, I have a very strong fuel smell inside the vehicle. This always happens on a full tank, and the less fuel I have the problem seems to go away. Most likely a leak of fuel into the interior of the vehicle. Ref: NHTSA action# pe12001.

62 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 05/17/2011

Leak from the fuel sending unit. This is a very common issue with this car with many complaints to the NHTSA. Mercedes wants close to $2000 for repair this is a factory defect including fuel tank and sending units. As my children's car seat is above this gas leak, this poses a very dangerous situation.

63 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2003 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 04/15/2011

Fuel tank and pump assembly required replacement due to massive fuel leak.

64 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2004 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 01/18/2011

Reference NHTSA action number for multiple complaints on same issue pe12001 anytime the vehicle is filled over 3/4 of a tank of fuel, a very strong fuel odor is present inside of the car, outside of the car, and fuel puddles around the fuel sending unit under the rear seat. Sometimes the smell is so strong, that my family and I fear that the vehicle is no longer safe to drive due to the strong fumes of gas inside of the vehicle which I am sure is a serious fire hazard and accident waiting to happen. . 65 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

When ever you fill the gas tank completely up it leaks fuel, have returned vehicle to dealer and they can not find anything wrong with it.

66 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 10/01/2009

There wasn't actually a particular incident, per se. My complaint is about the fuel tank in my car leaking. When I fill the car al the way up with fuel, gas leaks out onto the suspension, undercarriage and the ground. This is due to a stress fracture that has developed on the top of the tank by the fuel sending unit. A very high number of other owners of this make, model and range of years (2003 - 2006) of my car have this problem. This is a very serious issue that could lead to deaths, injury and unnecessary environmental pollution. I was told to reference NHTSA action number: pe12001.

67 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 08/20/2009

Fuel leak in sending unit above gas tank. Very strong smell of gas in car and gas leaking in my garage. Took it to Mercedes Benz of colorado springs and it took three visits to fix the problem in 2009. Now 9/14/14 having the same problem with strong smell of fuel in the car and fuel leaking in the sending unit all the way to the foam of the back seat.

68 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 08/01/2009

The fuel tank on this vehicle leaks whenever the tank is filled to the top. The leak occurs independently of whether the car is driven or parked (engine off). Enough fuel leaks out that it runs down adjacent components, to the car's undercarriage paneling, and through a weep hole on the car's plastic paneling, and finally onto the ground. The noxious odor of raw fuel is plainly apparent in and around the car whenever it¿s leaking. The only thing that keeps the problem from occurring is to not fill the tank to the top. The car has never been in an accident while i¿ve owned it. I bought it in 2009 with approximately 50,000 miles on it. The problem existed with the original fuel tank, and fuel sending unit that was installed on the car when it was being assembled. Since then i¿ve replaced the fuel sending unit and fuel sending unit gasket in hopes of curing the problem. That did not fix the problem. The replacement fuel sending unit is non-oem. The replacement gasket is oem.

69 Other Fuel System Tank Assembly problem of the 2005 Mercedes Benz E55

Failure Date: 05/01/2009

My car has been taken to Mercedes Benz to address a heavy gasoline vapor each year since I have owned it. This issue has been addressed three times and is only resolved for about 10 months or less when it starts again. The severity is gradual over time until the vapor becomes so strong I can smell it in my home exuding from the garage. I can only control the gasoline vapor by keeping a quarter tank of gas or less. I will be taking it to mercedes for the 4th time this upcoming week. As a physician I understand the dangers of gas vapor and its toxic damage to the body and our environment. I also know I cannot be the only one out there with this problem. [xxx] information redacted pursuant to the freedom of information act (foia), 5 u. S. C. 552(b)(6).
