Upon filling up my gas tank there is a strong odor of gasoline. This becomes really bad when parked in my garage. We have 2 small children so want to solve this as soon as possible.

2 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2010 Mercedes Benz E63

Failure Date: 11/16/2017

There is a fuel smell coming from the rear of the car. I remove the rear seat and verified the fuel sending unit is leaking. There was puddle of gas around the sending unit. Especially after filling the gas tank with fuel, the smell is much stronger. Other people have passed by my car while it is parked and have told me they small gas. I had the car serviced at mercedes of gilbert in arizona. They verified the fuel sending unit on the driver's side is leaking gas. They want something like $1,350 for the repairs. My previous car was a 2004 mercedes e55 amg. This car after thousands of complaints and NHTSA starting their investigation, had the same leaky fuel sending unit. Mercedes denied there was a problem and refused to fix it. Only after the NHTSA started their investigation did mercedes admit there was a problem and fixed the cars under an extended warranty. I believe that was in 2014. My current car is basically the same as my previous car. Mercedes did not fix the problem until 2014 which is 4 years after my car was put into service. Since it is pretty much the same car as previous versions, it does not surprise me that it has the same leaky fuel sending unit issue. My car was already on the road when mercedes decided to fix this problem. Since my car had been on the road for 4 years before the fix was available it makes sense that my car was going to have the same issue. In the repair estimate(see attached) mercedes even says it is a safety hazard.

3 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2008 Mercedes Benz E63

Failure Date: 09/24/2014

Owned the car for over 1 year, noticed a pronounced smell of gasoline after filling up at a local service station. Thought it was a spill, smell got stronger over the next 10 miles, parked the car in the garage, where the smell continued to increase to the point I could smell it in the bedrooms above the garage. Took car to local mercedes specialist who removed the inspection plates under the rear passenger seats. Driver side revealed a large pooling of gasoline (approx 8 FL oz) around the fuel tank apparatus. Car is not safe to drive, and required $1100 to replace the part.

4 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E63

Failure Date: 03/28/2013

I reported to my independent mechanic a strong fuel smell when filling the vehicle full and parking it. Upon further investigation, my mechanic discovered a fuel leak from the drivers side of the tank onto the left exhaust which of course can create a fire hazard. I immediately contacted my local mb dealership and spent days trying to get in touch with the service manager. Finally after contacting the mb central region office, I left a vm and was contacted by the service manager I had been trying to get in touch with. As of today 4/8/13, I took the vehicle in for inspection. They told me that the drivers side fuel sending unit/pump is leaking and would need to be replaced. I asked if the car was safe to drive, they replied no, but happily sent me on my way anyhow. This problem lines up with every other complaint about the my03-09 w211's that exhibit this problem. I have not had the fuel leaking to the ground and pooling up, but the dealership has confirmed that the sending unit is indeed leaking and pooling up in the depression where the sending unit attaches to the tank, which is now leaking onto my drivers side exhaust, thus creating potential for a fire hazard. Nhtsa action number: ea13003.

5 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2008 Mercedes Benz E63

Failure Date: 01/25/2013

Reference NHTSA action number: pe12001. I purchased this vehicle used in December 2012. One day after filling up with fuel I parked the car in my garage. The next day I came out to my garage and there was a strong smell of gasoline. When I got inside of my car the smell got much stronger and it was unbearable. I could not find any leaks inside or outside of the vehicle. I had to drive to work and this was the only car available. This was in the dead of winter and I had to drive with the windows down because the gas smell and fumes were unbearable. I had a terrible headache for the rest of the day. I left my car with the windows rolled down to help air it out. When I returned home I did some research online and found out this is a far too common problem with the w211 chassis Mercedes Benz. Per the information online I was instructed to remove my rear passenger seat and check the fuel sending units underneath the seats. Sure enough when I removed the cover off the drivers side fuel sending unit there was a pool of gasoline! I cleaned up all of the gasoline and let it dry out. From this point on I have not filled up my gas tank more than 3/4 just to keep this from happening again. Fuel pooling inside of the cabin is dangerous and unhealthy. Mercedes benz denies that this is a problem and will not cover the cost of replacing/fixing the defective fuel sending units. There are hundreds if not thousands of others that have this issue. Please do something to get this resolved. I have pictures of the fuel pooling inside of the cabin.

6 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2007 Mercedes Benz E63

Failure Date: 10/02/2012

After filling the fuel tank, the smell of fuel was such to indicate a leak. After many hours the smell is still constant.

7 Other Fuel System Tank Filling/charging problem of the 2008 Mercedes Benz E63

Failure Date: 05/10/2011

A strong fuel smell was noticed in the passenger cabin and outside the car after filling the tank. On 5/10/11, the dealer replaced the driver side sender unit p/n 2114703894 and seal ring p/n 2114710579. On 9/26/12, the same strong fuel smell was noticed in the cabin (again). The dealer replaced the same exact two parts on the driver (left) side. The sender units are accessed from under the back seat, which puts the overwhelming fumes in the cabin. I have read that this is a common problem for the w211 models, which is a very dangerous situation. I am concerned that this will happen again and result in a fire, explosion, or illness from the fumes. My children sit on the back seat that could become soaked with fuel.
