After closing the rear door, the rear window exploded with extreme force, sending glass fragments to the far edges of the garage. There was nothing in the car to hit the window and the garage door was closed. Fortunately I was not standing behind the car or I may have been seriously injured. I find many occurrences of this for the Ford escape which I understand is the sister car to the Mariner. Even though Mercury will no longer be made, the escape will continue to be made. I believe the window design to be defective and needs to be investigated.

The contact owns a 2005 Mercury Mariner. While driving 25 mph, the rear window shattered without warning. The police stated that a rock or bullet did not cause the failure; however, they suggested that the change in weather may have caused the failure. As of November 23, 2007, the dealer had not inspected the vehicle. The failure and current mileages were 26,000.
Back glass on Mercury Mariner shattered for no reason.
The rear window and door were closed, I pulled into the garage, stopped, heard a cracking noise, started to back up a few inches, then the rear window blew outward covering the driveway in glass.
