37 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2011 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 05/03/2014

Was stopped by a policeman because he said my right taillight was going crazy, blinking, acting wrong for a braking process. I had no indication that my right tail light did not work and also that my right signal light did not work. There is no indication that the blinker was not working. Prior to being stopped by the policeman, I had a driver shake their head at me when I was trying to change lanes to a right lane and she would not let me in to exit right. I did not know that the right signal was not working. This is an extremely unsafe condition because the car doe not register any indication that the light is not working for the brake and also for the signal. In addition, Ford will not replace these light assemblies without charging for them, which cost $500 each. It is not a simple bulb replacement, but instead an entire tail light assembly for $500. I had mine replaced but only because the dealer argued with them and I had to pay $100 deductible for my extended warranty. The dealer told me that if the left tail light goes out, this cost will not be covered by Ford and I will have to pay the entire cost of $500. Just the fact that this is a serious safety issue, I would think this would be a recall event. This tail light issue is also occurring on other Ford cars, including the Lincoln mkz.

38 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 05/01/2014

It first started with the passenger rear tail light. The led brakelight failed, led lights are known to last for 20+ years and these lasted about four. After that a bulb went out, when the bulb was replaced it still didn't resolve the issue. There are two components to the tail light, an inner light attached to the rear trunk and a outer light on the actual rear body. First, the inner passenger went out, then the inner driver's and then the outside passenger. Now finally, the outside driver's side has started flickering. Doing minor google searches immediately returns results with other vehicles having the same problem.

39 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 04/06/2014

I was asked to pull over by a friend who told me the brake lights weren't activating on the passenger side of the vehicle. Center and left side were operational. When I turn off the headlights, the brake lights are operational. An obvious system failure within the sealed light. Cannot replace this led light, the entire tail lamp unit must be removed. Checked with various parts and dealership ($400+) seems excessive for a tail light that costs $2-3 in an ordinary tail light system.

40 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 03/16/2014

One month after my NHTSA complaint # 10563879, the left side tail/brake light system is now responding in the same manner. Brake lights function normally during the day without the tail lights on, but when tail lights are activated, they shine at full 100% intensity, as if the brakes were applied. Brake application is now only shown by the small third center light. Whenever I see a Milan in my city at night, which is the only time it will be evident, I try to follow it to see if it has this issue also. I'll find that usually 1 or both of this vehicles lights do this, and the owners do not realize it. I feel this is a widespread safety issue, compounded by the owner being unaware of a problem. No dash warning is shown. And yes, Ford wants $400 for this lamp. Replacing it is the only fix.

41 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 03/08/2014

When turning on the headlights, the left and right rear tail light illuminate as if you are braking. They remain on with no discernible difference between non braking and braking actions. This can lead to a potential safety hazard and the potential to be rear ended. The tail light assembly in these models is faulty and needs to be addressed. Ford does not seem willing to help with this matter.

42 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 02/26/2014

Due to a defective connection both of my tail lights are out in my 2010 mecury Milan. The dealer has told me that replacing the whole tail light assembly, as that is the only option at $400. 00 a piece is "normal maintenance". When I contacted Ford I was told the same thing, that it was normal to have to replace tail lights. While I agree, these are led lights that have a bad connection and Ford has had many complaints on this same issue. Ford refuses to fix an issue that had to do with defective parts, the cost and the fords refusal to fix this issue, equates to huge safety issues.

43 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 02/10/2014

My son was almost rear ended on the freeway, which prompted my inspection of our 2010 Mercury Milan. I found the brake lights work as they should in daylight. When the headlights come on though, the right rear tail light shows the brake lights intensity 100% of the time, and is unaffected by brake pedal application. Left rear brake/tail light, and upper 3rd brake light operate normally. I consider this a major safety concern, especially after researching this led light system. This vehicle shows repeated widespread incidents, exactly as I describe. Some people report both lights malfunctioning. My concern is that it takes a third party to tell you that your tail/brake lights are not operating correctly, so most owners wont know they have a problem. This could be more common to this vehicle than it already appears to be. I only personally know one other person with the same vehicle and they have the same problem ! issue is not currently acknowledged by Ford, probably because it is a $400 lamp that must be replaced in its entirety.

44 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 01/01/2014

Back tail light assembly (led panel) of the 2010 Milan is faulty. Some lights would not light up at all and at one point someone reported none were lighting up. The car was just over the warranty with only 16,000 miles. Checking online it appears this is a serious problem with this model and year car and many have experienced the problem with low mileage even with replacement panels (at upwards of $400 for the part). Since it is impossible for a driver to know if/when the lights are or are not working - it is a serious danger for anyone driving behind a Milan. Nhtsa should force a recall of the parts before someone is rear ended and killed. Ford and their dealerships do not care.

45 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 12/24/2013

When the lights are on (at night), the rear lights are continuously at their highest brightness, as if the brakes were pressed down. So, it appears that the brakes are on continuously. The only difference when the brake pedal is pressed down is that the central light high up on the trunk turns on. This is only an issue at night- during the day the brake lights function normally. Based on internet forums at edmunds and consumer reports, among others, I have found at least 10 other instances of this exact same problem with 2010 Mercury Milans, most with low mileage: e. G. . 46 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 12/11/2013

The tailights never changed illumination, when the headlights where on. When the headlights were not on they illuminated according to brake petal pressing. Was driving at night with headlights on nd was rear ended due to the other driver knowing I was stopping. Thr other driver was hurt along with her passenger. Next morning to vehicle in to dealership was told it needed a heaglight control swith and an rear tail light assemblies. Not bulds but assemliea as these are led. 435$ for eqch taillight and 50 for control switch.

47 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 12/02/2013

I noticed on December 2, 2013 (may have been happening sooner), that when the brakes are applied, the tail light light blinked on and off and at times stayed off, but then went back to blinking. There isn't a bulb that can be replaced. The whole tail light assembly has to be replaced, which is costly.

48 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 12/01/2013

Have been having issues with tail lights flickering and going out intermittently. From what I've read online, it appears this is an ongoing and widespread issue. The replacement is only for the entire unit at a cost of over $400. This is absolutely ridiculous and I believe there should be a recall on this matter. It is a potential hazard and a lot of people cannot afford the fee for 1 tail light much less both.

49 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 11/06/2013

The initial incident in November, 2013 was the failure of the passenger side rear led tail light assembly. This resulted in the brake lights not operating when the brakes were depressed. A police officer stopped the car for a warning due to the brake light failure. Mileage on the car at the time was 12,700 miles. Due to the safety hazard the repair was needed. The entire assembly, not just a single bulb needed to be replaced. Approximately 10 months later in September, 2014 the driver side rear led tail light is now malfunctioning in the same way. Brake lights are again flickering and not working when the brakes are depressed. Mileage on the car at the time of this next failure was 16,100 miles. The dealer quoted price to repair is over $450! this car is garage kept, well maintained and has not been in involved in any accidents. Ford should fix this defect under a safety recall free of charge to customers!.

Failure Date: 11/01/2013

The contact owns a 2010 Mercury Milan. The contact stated that the driver's side rear tail light failed and remained illuminated after the brake pedal was released. The dealer performed a diagnostic which located the failure at the led assembly circuit board. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was 23,000 and the current mileage was 24,500.

51 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 09/20/2013

The contact owns a 2010 Mercury Milan. The contact stated that the passenger's side brake light failed. The contact found out the brake and tail lights were faulty by being stopped by a sheriff. A repair shop informed her, the computer chip in the tail lights were faulty. The vehicle was repaired. The manufacturer was contacted about the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 44,000. Updated 02/11/lj.

52 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 09/18/2013

2010 Mercury Milan premier (led tail lights) with headlights on the left rear brake light remains on all the time and does not respond when pressing the brake pedal.

53 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2011 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 09/01/2013

Sarting in September of 2013 on our mecruy Milan the right tail light was blinking like a strobe light when the headlights where on. ( tail light on, brake light flashing) this lasted for a few weeks then seemed to disappear, starting a few weeks ago the blinking returned on the right side followed by the left side. Currently the right side is non useable (tail light and brake light are both on all the time) left side stopped working completely this last problem has progressed quickly it all stopped working in just a few days. I went to the dealership to get it fixed they told me it was going to be about 1000. 00 to fix the two tail lights.

54 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2011 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

Right rear tail light started flickering bright to dim. After a couple of days it went out completely. Was replaced under extended warranty - but cost would have been over $350 dollars which makes it cost prohibitive for some I am sure (why should a "bulb" going out cost so much to fix). Very poor design and even worse manufacturing of part.

55 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

Led tail lights will flicker or not work at all - in doing a little research I found out it is a pretty common problem with these - Ford will offer no help with this known safety defect.

56 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 08/01/2013

The left side brake and tail light are not working. . . Changed the buld. Was intermitant at first but is now out. In order to fix. . . The whole taillight assembly has to be changed for about 500. 00!!! looking on the internet. . . It seems to be that the left one has a huge problem!! dangerous for everyone.

57 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 07/08/2013

This vehicle is equipped with led tail and brake lights. I was informed that my left rear brake light was barely operable, so I went to the closest authorized Ford dealer to have the situation remedied. The rear tail light assembly on these cars is a non-repairable sealed assembly, and any malfunction of the led's requires the whole tail light assembly to be replaced, at a cost of $465. This cost is outrageous, and how many people will simply elect to not replace an inoperative led tail light or brake light assembly? or what happens when Ford ceases to supply the proprietary assemblies, and owners are faced with junking their vehicles simply because of burnt out tail light assemblies? I am frustrated that "progress" has taken us from the simple 59 cent incandescent tail light or turn signal/brake light bulb, so an over-engineered led assembly that is prohibitively costly to repair or replace. I believe a retrofit tail light assembly is needed, either with serviceable led's, or conventional incandescent bulbs.

58 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 06/12/2013

First brake light and tail light on drivers side light up once in awhile did not know was out till friend told me , cost to repair led light is $400 for part have not repaired yet, while driving at any speed car will shut down to limp mode ,dealer stated $550 to repair and replace throttle body , both are serious safety items that could result in being rear ended, out of warranty so ordering a throttle body and replace by ourselves for it stalls out continuously , recall should be ordered on both the tail light assemblies and the throttle body as both are a common problem on these vehicles.

59 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 04/26/2013

Brake light failure. Car has led brake/tail lights. Brake light on left side would intermittently flash when headlights on. Changed complete taillight. ($375) problem fixed. 13 months later same brake light failed, brake light does not illuminate at all. Wiring ok, needs another tail light assembly. Another $375.

60 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 04/02/2013

In April 2013 I noticed that my left back tail light would go out and come back on intermittently. Eventually the tail light stayed on, but it was not a normal tail light the brightness indicated that it was a brake light. Every time I turn on my lights the brake light illuminates as a tail light. Now March 2014 my brake light in my back window went out. I replaced the bulb in this light. Two weeks ago may 2014 my tail light on the right side went out and when I used my brakes the right brake would blink like a blinker. Currently today. I have a tail light on the left that is as bright as the brake, when the tail lights are on I don't have a brake light. When the lights are off the brake light works. On the right side I do not have a tail light or a brake light. So when the lights are on, I have one tail light out completely. When I have my tail lights on the only brake light I have is in the back window. I called today about replacements and was quoted $376. 20 a piece! that is only the part. I did have an electrician friend come out and test the wiring and nope not the wiring, it is all in the light. I can not afford to get this fixed. Ford needs to step up! this is the 6th Ford we have had. This is the only issue I have ever had. If Ford does not take reasonability I will be trading it in for a Toyota!.

61 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 03/11/2013

My wife noticed apx 1 year ago that her left brake light was not working. We discovered it was led & apparently the complete tail light assembly needs changed. We recently brought it to our Ford dealerships' attention, but they said they did not know how to fix. Although, we realize that occasionally, changing lamps is the owners responsibility, we feel that changing a very expensive tail light assembly is not the norm. This car has had no wrecks & no after market devices of any kind. Please help!! thank you.

62 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 03/06/2013

Purchased this Milan in 2011 with 22k miles. Immediately noticed issues with the 6-speed 6f35 automatic causing the car to stop accelerating under load, leaving me dead in the water when merging in traffic. I was not informed that Ford already knew of issues and I was in and out of the dealer with nothing done, until the trany had more damage. It was repaired but never properly stress tested, by either of two dealerships I went to. According to the TSB if the trany exhibited certain grades of failure, it required reprogramming and then valve body replacement, followed by a stress test to verify there was not any more extensive damage. The most I got after the valve body was changed was a suggestion that I change my trany fluid that had already been changed by Ford 20k miles earlier. I then started having issues with the rear tail lights (brake/parking), with ones flickering intermittently in the cold and then dieing completely, or going full intensity and never switching back to just parking light mode. Had to replace both at high cost, Ford lists $400 each, basically for the equivalent of a $2 bulb. I am an ee, specializing in manufacturing, and after taking one of the failing ones apart found it is was probably related to poor part choice or design. There was nothing damaged due to water or impact. I would dump this vehicle, however I still have payments and ethically I can not sell it on the open market worrying somebody else may have a dangerous issue with it due to the questionable transmission. If the transmission had any type over stress that required the level if testing mentioned in the TSB, which is almost impossible to do in vehicle, the whole trany should have been pulled.

63 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 02/05/2013

After being told on several occasions that our left tail light and brake light was not working, on 5/19/14 our 2010 Milan was taken in for routine maintentance by the dealer. At that time, they were asked to address the tail light and brake light problem. The vehicle had 35,070 miles on the odometer and although the new car warranty had expired, we had purchased both premium care and esp at the time of purchase to the tune of over $2000. I was shocked and very angry when I was informed that the left led tail light would need to be replaced at a cost of over $400 and it would not be covered under either program. Subsequently, in checking the small print, I discovered that led lights were indeed excluded under either program. Checking further, I found that there are numerous complaints of what certainly appears to be a manufacturer defect and a safety issue regarding the led tail lights the Ford dealer service advisor did not seem be surprised at my outrage since this seemingly is a problem that he evidently has dealt with before. Now it appears my right brake light is staying lit and does not function when the brake is applied and I could be faced with a $1000 repair bill. Evidently Ford is going to have to be forced to address this problem. One could be driving along without knowing their stop/brake lights were not working since there is no visual alert on the message center and wonder why they were suddenly rear-ended by a following vehicle at a traffic light. Besides the expense to the owner, there is a real safety issue that needs to be addressed! the lack of brake lights could result in serious injury and or death and considerable damage. The problem is an obvious defect in materials if not workmanship and the company is clearly liable. The life expectancy of led light strips is certainly much longer than the ordinary light bulb, so what is going on?.

64 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 12/01/2012

In early December, I clicked the door open button in the dark and noticed the right rear tail light was only half lit. I went to the manual to see what bulb it was, figuring that I could buy a new one and change it. The manual said to bring the car to the dealer. I decided that I would bring the car to the dealer when the next oil change was due. I brought the car in on January 9th and was told that both the right and left tail lights had to be replaced and the cost would be $1,100. The time of this service was two months and less than two thousand miles past the basic warranty. I was shocked and very unhappy as I felt that this was clearly a manufacturing defect as the leds should last 10,000 hours or more. These had, at most, 700 hours. The defect may well have occurred during the warranty period, but I never noticed it as no indicator light ever went on. The service rep and service manager contacted Ford and there was an adjustment made where I paid 30% or $325.

65 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 11/01/2012

The date of the occurrence is unknown. The car currently has 24,000 miles on it. The left tail light does not work and the left brake light does not work. The right brake light works when the headlights are off (as in daylight) but does not work when the headlights are on (as at night). The right tail light works when the headlight switch is on but is very bright, indicating that the brake light is on, even though the brake pedal is not depressed. Obviously, there is a defect in the circuitry. All of the long-life led bulbs couldn't have failed at once. The dealer wants to charge us $550 per light unit to supposedly correct the problem. This is a serious design defect safety issue and should result in a recall.

66 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 10/19/2012

When I went to have my car inspected, I was told that when the lights are on either during the day time or night time, they are always "brake light" lit. They are never lit like regular tail lights and it always looks like my brakes are on. When I took them to my mechanic, I was told I needed both tail light assemblies. The place I got the tail lights charged me $279. 63 per light, I had to have both tail lights replaced, total cost to me, $559. 26. This problem has been since 2012 and I was not aware of it since I am not behind the car and just needed to have the car inspected. I noticed that the driver's side tail light always looked brighter, but I thought that because it was an led light, that was the reason for the brightness. I could have had a rear-end collision due to this issue. Because my car is not under warranty, I needed to have this repaired at my expense and since the car is only 4 years old, I do not think it should be my expense. Plus trying to get these lights was very time consuming even for my mechanic. This has been a very frustrating situation, especially since the car is only 4 years old.

67 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 10/05/2012

I commute approx 45 miles to work on a daily basis Monday thru Friday. I have a friend that also commutes, and on several occasions she has called me and asked if I was on the interstate and where I was located, she said I can tell when you are on the road, as your tail lights are always so much brighter than everyone's. Approx a month and a half ago, the same thing happened and my friend asked me to step on the brakes, she noted that the only difference in the lighting on the back of my car was that the brake light in the back window came on, the taillight-brake lights didn't change when I stepped on them brake. I have since taken my car into the dealership to find out what is the matter, one dealership reported that I have an led board out, on both sides, approx cost 397 dollars a piece. I then took it to a Ford dealership and they have spent 2 weeks trying to figure out what the problem was, they changed the switch under the dash, thought it was fixed and then couldn't get the car out of gear. They then took a taillight out of another Mercury Milan on their lot and put it in my car, which worked, but then didn't on the other car. The mechanic I spoke with said they had not seen this before, but had never looked for it because no one had brought it to their attention, he reported that he was going to check all the cars on their lot and was very concerned about the safety issue, that I could have very easily have been rear-ended, because there was no change in the brake lights. The mechanic said that when the headlights are on , the brake lights are on continuously.

68 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 08/08/2012

We purchased this vehicle new in 2010. In 2012 we noticed flickering in left rear tail light assembly, which was intermittent, this occurred at approximately 40,000 miles. In October 2014 at approximately 83,000 miles we noticed that when the head lights were turned on that the brake lights stayed on constantly even when the brakes were not applied.

69 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 08/01/2012

The tail lights on the car keep fading out. The right tail light is completely out and the left tail light flashes, instead of just staying on as the brake is being pressed.

70 Tail Light Switch problem of the 2010 Mercury Milan

Failure Date: 06/28/2012

I purchased the car new in August 2010. In June 2012 I noticed a problem with the left tail/brake light. When the headlights were off, the brake lights worked properly when the brake pedal was depressed. However, with the headlights on, instead of the left tail light being on, the brighter brake light was on all the time. This could lead the driver behind me to think I am applying my brakes when I am not. The rear lamps on this car are led, not regular bulbs. The only fix is to replaced the entire sealed assembly; the car was still under warranty, so the dealer replaced the lamp assembly at no charge. Now, 2 years later, I am having a similar problem with the lamp assembly that was replaced. Since the car is now out of warranty, Ford will not do anything about it. I would have to purchase the lamp assembly (which my research shows is a dealer-only part) for over $400. And presumably, when it fails again after 2 years, I get to spend another $400 for another one. Since Milans are no longer being made, what will we do years down the road when this part is no longer available from anyone at any price? junk the car because the rear lights don't work properly? I have researched this, and many Milan owners have the same problem. This is clearly a safety issue, and it is obvious that these assemblies are defective. I feel that Ford should redesign these to be reliable (or alternatively, design a replacement that uses standard bulbs instead of leds), then issue a recall and replace them at no charge for the life of the car.
