2 Accelerator Pedal problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 02/18/2011

The contact owns a 2006 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated while attempting to accelerate from a complete stop, the pedal was abnormally resistant and the vehicle would not respond. The engine was turned off and when restarted, the vehicle resumed normal operation. The failure recurred three times intermittently. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where the technician was unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The approximate failure mileage was 48,000.

This is the second complaint. The 2005 Mercury Mountaineer spontaneously accelerated on the freeway. I was driving at 70 mph and it accelerated to over 80 mph. The gas pedal was pulling itself down.

I read an article from the chicago tribune titled "sticky throttles. " I have a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer and the unintended acceleration happened to me on July 13th. I was coming to a stop at a stop light and just as I was about to a complete stop, with my foot on the brake, it tried to accelerate and then stopped. So you may also want to look a the 2003 model also. The article I mentioned is below. Sticky throttles chicago (chicago tribune)--the national highway traffic safety administration is investigating 690,000 2002 Ford explorers and Mercury Mountaineer sport-utility vehicles after complaints of sticking throttles and unintended acceleration. The agency's preliminary investigation of vehicles with 4- liter, 6-cylinder engines was prompted by 15 complaints. Nhtsa is investigating 2003 and 2004 Ford mustang, mustang convertible and mustang gts after complaints of accelerator pedal interference with the car's carpet. The probe involves about 20,000 mustangs. Nhtsa investigations can lead to vehicle recalls.

While driving down the road had been having trouble with having to force the accelrator down to accel and without warning while approaching a stop sign. Had foot on brake, released brake pressure, and tried to push gas pedal, but the gas pedal broke, and was dangling by wires. Had to coast vehicle to curb to get out of street to safety. No repairs have been made. Towed vehicleto owners home. Ford issued recall on same model and year but this vehicle wasnot included due to VIN . Mechanic suggested it could be a throttle body.

While driving 50 mph the consumer felt something under h is foot snap. The consumer lost speed, pulled over to the side of the road, to discover the bolt holding the accelerator pedal had fallen off. The consumer was able to drive the vehicle in order to have the repair done.

Accelerated 1999 Mercury Mountaineer v8 from stop light. Throttle got stuck in accelerate position. Tried to free throttle by repeated pulsing with foot but acccelerator stuck in full throttle position and could not stop car! had to turn off ignition resulting in no power steering or braking. Was able to free throttle by removcing throttle cover (on engine) and manually moving throttle by hand. Would have hit car in front of me if there was traffic! throttle plate assembly replaced by authorized Ford dealer at my cost.

About two years ago owner purchased the vehicle 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. Right away owner complained of acceleration problem. While driving on the road vehicle felt like it was shifting when it accelerated. Vehicle usually did this about 25-30 mph or even higher speeds. The rpms would raise and increase speed. It felt like a transmission problem because it would accelerate, and raise the rpms without warning. There were no lights to indicate a problem. The first time the vehicle was taken to the dealer they didn't know what the problem was. The dealership was cooperative. The dealer replaced about half the transmission because they were thinking that it was a transmission problem. The problem has remained about the same and was still going on. When it accelerated by itself it sped up about 5-10 mph. The rpms went up by about 1000. Owner would like to make the office of defect investigation investigators aware that he would like to have someone come and check out the vehicle, and even take the vehicle away for further analysis if they would like to. He another vehicle to drive, and insisted about getting the problem with the accelerator repaired.

While driving there was unattended acceleration. Consumer's foot actually was on the brake and at the accelerator pedal at the same time. The pedals were very close together. Accident occurred. Vehicle was totaled. Upon impact, the air bags did not deploy. . . . . . Once off the exit ram slid through grass an dinto pine tree.

While driving on a neighborhood road the entire accelerator assembly fell of onto the floor. I found no evidence of the nuts used to affix the assembly to the fire wall. Had this occurred on interstate driving or in heavy city traffic an accident could happen.

When applying the accelerator pedal from a stop position it caused a momentary pulse before the vehicle went into motion. Vehicle had been to the dealer on numerous occasions, and they were unable to locate the problem. The consumer stated that the pause was so severe that it jerks all passengers heads . The vehicle also had transmission problems. The transmission had a harsh shift and clunk when going into reverse or drive. The transmission has been repaired.

16 Accelerator Pedal problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

The front end dash has a very loud rattle while letting up on the gas or depressing the brake the vehicle has been in the shop five times. They have readjusted the a/c lines many times, tightened items in the engine, and replaced a missing bolt in the firewall. It was fixed once that last a couple of months, but the noise is back. It will be going in the shop for the sixth time. Also, there is a squeak when going over bumps. It has been in the shop twice and they replaced the ball bearing joints. However, the squeak is back.

Vehicle was going 70mph and trying to accelerate consumer noticed that throttle was stuck. Consumer had to stomp on throttle to get it unstuck, almost running off the road. Throttle body assembly had to be replaced.
