Started losing power ,did not want to go pas 30 miles per hr ,then it ramed up and came to a stop with no acceleration ,I shut it off then start it again and was able to get home at a low rate of speed while continuing to have these problems, another day while far away from home the engine rammed up again minimizing my speed as the transmission was slipping and not go fast then my o/d over drive went on flashing a light ,while the engine kept steady at 20-30 miles per hour while accelerating increasing no speed ,now my SUV will not run wright, it will kick into gear at times constantly and cause problems driving safely ,this is a common problem I'm hearing and reading in the internet with the Ford/ Mercury Mountaineer the manufactory does not want to accept responsibility with this problem . . . . . This is clear a recall issue that needs to be addressed before someone gets killed on the highway by getting rammed by a semi-truck which it almost happened to me !!!! a multi-million dollar law suit is in order if they do not acknowledge and fix this problem.

My 2007 Mercury Mountaineer never had any problems until recently, thought it was the transmission because of the way it drove. Took it to the mechanic and got transmission fluid put in but the problems remained the same and was told the transmission was fine. My thermostat housing unit was leaking (this is very common with these cars and very dangerous, needs immediate attention!) and had caused very expensive wiring issues. Almost acts exactly like the transmission is going out - rpm's are way too high, the vehicle would not accelerate in the middle of city traffic, the car jumped at a stoplight and caused me to hit the car in front of me, and it doesn't shift properly. Problems occurred out of nowhere and are too dangerous to be ignored but very expensive to be fixed. Its very common and should be recalled before someone gets seriously injured!!!!.

When going 25-30 mph vehicle will not shift. It actually kicked the vehicle back. Od light started to flash then service engine soon light came on. Been doing this since. Went to go get Mountaineer read and of coarse. . The transmission. . Something needs to be done otherwise this might eventually lead to a lawsuit after reading all of the complaints on the exact same thing.

Sometimes when I'm driving around 35 mph, the car will send an audible warning signal, most of the dashboard lights come on and the engine abruptly shuts off. It never happens with my wife who is the primary driver of this vehicle. This began shortly after purchase and was mentioned to our l/m dealer (before they went out of business). I just made the correlation with the speed control last weekend. In fact, I can duplicate the issue now. The shutoff occurs during deceleration when speed control is engaged around 35 mph. Since my wife only uses speed control on the interstate, it has never happened to her.
Engine died has repeated only a few times at or above 50mph over span of time.

The contact owns a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer. While leaving a drive-thru, the vehicle accelerated independently and crashed into an oncoming vehicle. The air bags did not deploy. A police report was filed. The passenger in the contact's vehicle sustained injuries to the back, neck, and spine which required medical attention. The vehicle was destroyed and towed to a collision center. The failure mileage was unavailable.
I was driving to an intersection with my family while going 45 mph. I noticed black coming through the vents. I pulled off to a gas station parking lot. I proceeded to use fire extinguishers under the hood, the fire department had to come put it out. They did a look through and determined the fire started at the fuse box. I went home and researched that this is a recurring problem with this type of vehicle. I'm now out the 6500 I used to purchase it. I cant fix it or trade it in now.

There is a manufacturing fault with the position of the brake and the gas pedal. It is very easy to move the right foot from the gas to the brake and leave enough of the foot on the gas at the same time. It allows the brake to be pressed but also applies gas to give a vehicle a surge while braking. Had the same situation with a 2001 Ford taurus and Ford issued a recall notice to have the placement of pedals changed.

The speed control deactivation switch was replaced in my 2002 Mercury Mountaineer by a local dealer after the original recall was issued [Ford recall campaign number 09s09]. Approximately 6 months ago, the low brake fluid light began to illuminate. Over time, the cause of the brake fluid loss became obvious as the brake fluid began to visibly leak from the new speed control deactivation switch. Presently, the low brake fluid level light illuminates every three to four days with minimal driving. The brake fluid reservoir requires approximately one quarter of its capacity upon every occurrence. It appears that the replacement speed control deactivation switch may be faulty as well. Hopefully, this is a rare occurrence, but in case it becomes more wide spread, I wanted to bring the issue to someone's attention.
I had picked up my kids from daycare and I put my vehicle in reverse and backed up. While backing up I heard a loud pop and I got out to see but there was nothing visible. So I put the vehicle in drive and as I was going down the street my vehicle axle broke and my truck hit the street in the middle of traffic. I took it to the Ford dealership and they said it was my axle and my differential had broken also, am I am lucky that I didn't have a bad accident with the extend of the damage of the differential. After I fixed that and it cost $2900. That still did not fix the problem and I had to replace the transfer case. Then all three of my Cadillac converters had to be replaced. I have had problem after problem and OH yeah the back rear gate has been cracked like the month after I bought it.
While driving on highway drivers seat went forward independently without warning and seat went in the last memory position as far forward as possible position jamming drivers foot on gas pedal for an unspecified amount of time, and dome light came on. Driver could not get foot off gas pedal and could only get the seat to go back by manually using the seat buttons. Drivers seat was so far forward it was very difficult for driver to get hand between door and seat to get to button and driver was so frantic and scared trying to maintain vehicle control while attempting to get hand between seat and door to reach and find correct button to move seat back when there are 3 different seat buttons. Driver has disabled person that sets behind drivers seat so drivers seat upon disabled person entering vehicle is always put in the fartherest position forward to enable disabled person space to get in vehicle. Upon finally getting seat back driver has no recollection of any events occurring afterward because driver went into shock. Took vehicle to dealership to find problem shop manager got in attempting to duplicate problem instead the seat wouldn't even move as it's automatically programmed to do, then seat rocked back and forth, then went all the way forward. Dealership made two new ignition keys to replace the worn key, replaced computer memory cylinder in steering wheel where it was found if worn ignition key lost contact because of key being worn, with cylinder, seat had a mind of it's own. This resulted in a speeding ticket.

When braking the vehicle accelerates, when slowing down to a stop sign or a red light and it happens when parking forward or reverse. I recently purchased the vehicle 8/2012. I am very dispointed because I really like this SUV. I hope the dealer will fix this speed control problem free of charge because this situation could get dangerous.
The contact owns a 2003 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated the brake and accelerator pedals failed simultaneously. While driving 55 mph with the brake pedal engaged the pedal extended to the floor board. Simultaneously, the accelerator pedal and the brake pedal was stuck in the down position. As the vehicle tried to slow down the brakes were on fire. The contact thrust the gear into park, pulled the emergency brake which failed to function, turned the engine off and was able to exit from the vehicle without being injured. The fire was extinguished. The fire department filed a report. The vehicle was towed to an auto repair shop. The dealer was not notified of the failure. The manufacturer was stated there was no recall and offered no assistance. The failure mileage was 112,000.

Speed control shut off while driving on highway @65 mph. Scarey.
Just purchased a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer today. Driving home, using cruise/speed control at around 30mph and driving on a slight decline, the vehicle shut down. All indicator lights went on, and I had to coast to the side of the road. I put vehicle in park and restarted it without problem. There were no indicator lights (check-engine, etc. ) lit up. Immediately went to local Ford dealership and they had no clue, especially since the computer did not have any codes indicating a problem. . I'm canceling the check and returning the vehicle tomorrow.
The contact owns a 2010 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact stated that while braking to a stop, the vehicle would lunge forward. The vehicle was taken to the dealer where they advised him that they were unable to diagnose the failure. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was contacted and they offered no assistance. The failure mileage was approximately 1,000. The current mileage was approximately 30,000.
When coming to slow stop, the vehicle will lunge forward before completely stopping. This behavior started several months ago and was very random in the beginning, but has become more and more frequent - almost every time I come to complete stop. Vehicle also hesitates when gas is pressed and then surges forward. That behavior is very random at this stage, but car has done that over the past year. Because of the "lunging" at stops, I have taken vehicle to repair shop and they indicate the vehicle's computer needs to be updated. This appears to be a common problem with this make/model/year.
The contact owns a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact was driving approximately 45 mph when the vehicle abnormally accelerated. The contact applied the brakes but the vehicle would not stop. The contact was unable to maintain control of the vehicle as it accelerated. The left side of the vehicle began to skid abnormally and the contact crashed into a wire fence. The vehicle then rolled over and crashed into several trees before coming to a stop. The passenger sustained major injuries to the head and bodily trauma. The contact sustained injuries to the head. The contact and passenger were transported to the hospital via ambulance. A police report was filed. The vehicle was destroyed. The failure mileage was unknown.
I drove a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer SUV and as I was turning into the apartment complex from a complete stop, the gas pedal clamped down & I couldn't get the brake to work. My SUV was totaled & I ran into a full-sized pick-up truck, which was totaled too. I reported the problem to the police & my insurance company. The insurance company told me not to tell anyone else about it. It was late evening, so no kids were out, but being unable to control my vehicle, which totaled two full-sized trucks is scary!.
My 1997 Mercury Mountaineer (that I purchased Feb 2010) is experiencing the same acceleration problems as described in the 4. 0 sohc campaign # 00v422000 and action # ea99001. I have to apply extra acceleration to make the car drive when engine is "cold". After it warms up, or if I start the engine and allow it to warm up before driving, I do not have that problem. Has there been any other v8 complaints?.
My 2004 Mercury Mountaineer accelerated on it's own as I was pulling into a parking space. The vehicle made a roaring sound. My foot never left the brake pedal and I could not stop it. I jumped the curb, went over a grassy area, over the sidewalk and did not stop until I hit a concrete building at approximately 25-30 miles per hour. It caused significant damage to the building and to the car. Airbag did not deploy. I have had the body damage repaired and my auto insurance has paid over $3,000 for that. My husband took it to our nearest Ford dealer where they ran a diagnostic and it showed an electronic malfunction. They said the throttle body assembly needs replacing. The technician did not give us a print-out and said he couldn't find it when we checked back later. We contacted Ford motor company to see if they would pay for the replacement because our insurance would not. They also will not pay for it, but sent us to another Ford dealer to run a diagnostic on the airbags. After explaining my ordeal to the technician, he agreed to also check the throttle body. He said their diagnostic test shows no problems with the airbag or the throttle body! he also stated that the first dealer could have wiped it from the memory of the computer. After my husband spoke with a customer service rep at Ford motor company today, she said she would request that the dealer who ran the first diagnostic test send us a copy of the print-out that he couldn't find for us. The car is going back into the shop tomorrow at a local private mechanic (not a Ford dealer technician) and we will take it from there. As of today, nothing has been repaired other than the body damage.
The contact owns a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer. Immediately after the vehicle was turned on without warning, it accelerated and crashed into a store. The police gave her a ticket for careless driving. The vehicle was towed to an authorized dealer. She was not informed of the repairs that were made to the vehicle. The contact has had problems with the vehicle since she purchased it. Prior to the failure, whenever she engaged the brake pedal the vehicle accelerated without warning; however, the dealer stated that there was nothing wrong with the vehicle. The vehicle was destroyed per the insurance company. The contact was always concerned about the safety risk and defect in the vehicle . The failure and current mileages were 30000. Updated 11/04/09. The consumer stated the vehicle made a noise when the gear was placed in reverse. Updated 11/05/09.
The contact owns a 2007 Mercury Mountaineer. While driving 12-14 mph and attempting to slow down to a stop, the vehicle lunged forward. The contact depressed the brake pedal more firmly to stop the vehicle. The vehicle was taken to a local mechanic who could not duplicate the failure. Once while driving in reverse, the vehicle lunged forward and pinned his son between his vehicle and another. The child sustained arm injuries. No police report was filed. The failure had been occurring since 2008. The vehicle was taken to the dealer but the contact was unsure of what the dealer did to remedy the problem. The failure continued and progressed to a more consistent problem. The vehicle had not been repaired. The VIN was unavailable. The failure mileage was 50 and the current mileage was 50,000.
2002 Mercury Mountaineer. Consumer states vehicle caught fire under the hood the consumer believed the reason for the vehicle catching on fire was due to a faulty starter. The consumer also mailed in a recall letter regarding the speed control deactivation switch.
My Ford Mountaineer 2008 transmission is erratic and the traction control light comes on when the slipping is taking place. Braking is also erratic as I feel a bumping while braking to a stop. It is very dangerous as it feels like to transmission and brake/traction control system is about to go. I called Ford and they have know of the problem since 2006 as the transmission used (6r60) continually needs software updates. According to the dealer, most all of these vehicles with this transmission eventually have the problem but very rarely with the base warranty period, so now all of us have to pay but Ford has know of the problem even b/4 my vehicle was manufactured. . . . . . . . . What do I do, Ford is not recalling for this a shifting the risk of the accident and repair to the consumer. Please help and let me know what my next step might be. . . . Thank you.
My 2006 Mercury Mountaineer has intermittently jolted or lurched forward when stopping for lights and stop signs after speeds over 30 mph. Hasn't gotten away from me but feels as if I am going to hit something or someone ahead of me. Extremely scary when people are in cross walk. I took my car to the Ford dealer shortly after buying it used. The dealer checked it out and denied it was happening. That was years ago and tonight I saw numerous complaints on another website about this problem. Was looking because now I am getting a grinding noise from my wheels which persists after a brake job that didn't fix it as I thought. Both problems are separate but I see a pattern of them on this vehicle now.
The contact owns a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer. While pulling into the driveway at 20 mph, the contact noticed smoke coming from under the hood. Within five minutes, the vehicle burst into flames without warning. She received a recall letter (05s28) in August of 2007. The manufacturer was notified and they advised her to send photos under reference number 383940900. The Ford investigation concluded that the motor was too badly burned to determine if the fire was caused by the recall. The investigator agreed with her, but he had to follow the company's decision. The current and failure mileages were 60,000. Updated 12/12/07.
The contact owns a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact received a recall notice regarding NHTSA campaign id number 07v336000 (vehicle speed control). The dealer and manufacturer stated that the parts were unavailable until November of 2007. He felt that his vehicle was not being repaired in a reasonable amount of time. He was advised to have the speed control switch disconnected, but had not done so. There had been no failure to date. The current mileage was 90,000.
I received a motive in August 2007 which advised me to contact my local dealer who was authorized by Ford motor company to "install a fused wiring harness into the speed control system" of my 2000 Mercury Mountaineer (recall: 05s28). That until this repair was completed, I should park my vehicle "away from structures to prevent a potential underhood fire from spreading". I have attempted to have this repair completed at least 10 times since receiving this notice, always being told that the "required parts are not in yet". I believe I have worn down the service department with my calls, since I was last told: "they will probably never be in" !!.
2007 Mercury Mountaineer customer states that the car suddenly surged and would not stop until she put the car in park*.
