The contact owns a 1999 Mercury Mountaineer. He received recall notice 05s28 in September of 2006. The parts are not available. The vehicle speed control is not disconnected. The current mileage was 77000. There are no failures at this time. The VIN is not available.

37 Vehicle Speed Control problem of the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

- the contact stated that while her 1998 Mercury Mountaineer was parked, the contact heard a loud noise coming from her vehicle. She noticed that her vehicle had flames coming from under the hood. The fire department arrived and extinguished the fire. The contact feels that the cause of the fire was due to NHTSA campaign id number : 00v422000( vehicle speed control). 2000 Mercury Mountaineer 2wd. Caught fire in a parking lot within a few minutes of turning off the ignition. Sparks fell from under the engine compartment and then caught fire. Fire dept. Responded to fire.

When the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer was running on hwy 121 south merging into hwy 114 west, the 1998 Mercury suddenly became out of control at a speed less than speed limit. The car was being accelerated even if the accelerator pedal was off. The driver applied break to stop the car but the break did not work. Then the driver had to steer the car into the bush off road to avoid collision to other cars. The driver changed the at to p (parking) to stop the car. The engine surged and started fire underneath of the car. Then the driver removed the key and evacuated from the car. The fire was extinguished by the fireman.

Throttle position sensor failed in 2004 Mercury Mountaineer. Car abruptly stopped accelerating while traveling and came to a stop. Fortunately I was in a near-empty parking lot when this occurred. It could have been a very dangerous situation had this occurred while I was on the road. After the car came to a stop, I was unable to move it forward for more than about 100 yards. It had to be towed. Dealer determined that loss of acceleration was due to "tp open intermittent. " dealer fixed problem.

Put car in reverse, had very fast sudden high acceleration without touching the throttle. Held brakes with both feet unti I could turn ignition off. After looking for obvious sign of problem (found none), turned car back on and it acted normal. Almost ran over my son.

Purchased a new 2005 Mercury Mountaineer in 7/31/2005 the first time the car accelerated when the brakes were applied and the car had to be put in neutral to stop. The dealer reported that there were no known fixes for this problem at this time. The second time while pulling into my driveway when the brakes were applied the car accelerated and crash into my garage door. This time the dealer blamed my wife and said she must have pressed the gas and brake peddles at the same time. The car sustained front end body damage and my garage door needs to be replaced. The car has been at the dealer since the accident happened and we are still waiting to find out what is Ford's determination of this issue and what they will do to get us out of this car and into something else.

While driving in 20 mph in congested traffic the vehicle suddenly accelerated and lunged forward. Owner had to steer the vehicle off the road to avoid hitting another vehicle. Owner shifted to park in order to stop vehicle. No injuries or accident occurred.

The speed control of my 2000 Mercury mountineer, sticks causing the vehicle to excerlerate out of control the only way to stop it is to slip the transmission into neutral and shut the vehicle off. It has happened three times and is getting more frquent. I have reported it to the dealer (sellers sexton waynesville, mo) they say nothing is wrong and they cant find a problem.

Took in for throttle body repair and driver seat bolt recall 9-03. They said didn't need the throttle body repair. . Now that warranty is up I can't get this hazard to driving fixed. I have almost hit cars in parking lots and in my driveway. Why isn't this considered a safety issue and recall. Why does it have a mileage and time limit. I tried to get it done and they wouldn't do it now it's too late. The throttle hesitates and then surges. Ford identifies this as a problem, but won't fix it.

With brakes applied attempting to put vehicle in park, the vehicle lunged forward and was out of control and struck a light pole, went over concrete barrier onto next street, and neither air bag deployed. Consumer also compalined several times about the brakes.

While driving 20-25 mph and braking vehicle accelerated. Brake pedal felt normal. During braking vehicle slowed a bit, engine revved again. Consumer unable to stop vehicle, hit another vehicle. No injuries. $ amount of damage unknown at this time.

When first pressing down consumer was in a coast mode, and throttle wouldn't budge. Dealer wanted $300 for repair. Recall 00v422000/ manufacturer's recall 00s568 didn't apply to consumer because vehicle had a 5. L engine, and recall was for a 4. L engine.

When approaching stop sign, at intersection, vehicle accelerated when brakes were applied, causing a collision with the car in front of mine. The brake pedal was depressed all the way to the floor, and the engine roared as if accelerating. We have had one other similar incident in which the vehicle accelerated while braking. Dealer explained that driver had foot on brake and accelerator at same time. In second incident, I am sure that I had my foot only on the brake. Dealer examined vehicle after each incident and could find nothing wrong.

While turning into an intersection vehicle started to rev and take off. Motor on vehicle was going faster and faster. Foot was on brake, and vehicle would not stop. After 10 seconds motor was back to normal. This has occurred on three separte occasions, one time there was an accident where the consumer hit the vehicle in front of him, there were no injuries, consumer found service bulleting 97s67 and states that this exactly describes the problem the vehicle is experiencing.

While sitting in drive at a light the car will start to race and then accelerate and take off the brakes will not stop the car. The only way to stop the car is to put throw it into park. The first two times it happened I thought it was something I had done. However on the third time while pulling out of my driveway the car took off and shoot across the street I was only able to stop it after entering my neighbors' front lawn. I was very fortunate that no cars were coming down the street and no children were nearby. However it did take down part of my driveway fence. Of course it was taken back to the dealer they couldn't find anything wrong . Then a week and a half later it happens again while sitting at a light twice. The dealer had my car since thurs and can't find anything wrong I'm afraid to go and get it.

I bought this Mercury in oct 98 . It is now Jan of 99 and I have had quite a few problems . A warrenty came with this car, and we have been there twice ;one for the transfer case, and switch for the power seat , leak on rear hatch window. Now im returning it for throttle malfunction. I almost killed my children and myself . I made my children jump out of the car while doing aprox . 5 miles an hour. The more I stepped on the brakes the more the engine idled faster . I dont know anything about cars I am a housewife. I just wish I knew about this defect in the car so it could been corrected before I went on vacation . It is a nice car. Backing out of drivewayconsumer moved shift lever from reverse into drive, vehcle suddenly lurched forward,causing a loss of control, resulting in an accident. Dual airbags did not deploy.

The truck came to a stop, the owner hit the brakes but the truck kept going, and driver slammed on the brake and hit another car, and went through a stop sign. The engine was racing the entire time with his foot was on the brake.
