The contact owns a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer. On the day the vehicle was purchased, the contact noticed fluid leaking onto her garage floor. She returned to the dealer and was informed that the pinion seal needed to be replaced, and repairs were made. While traveling 45 mph, the contact attempted to set the cruise control and the vehicle shut off in the middle of the road. She was able to pull over to the shoulder and restart the vehicle to drive home. After work one evening, she was unable to start the vehicle. After 20 minutes, her father arrived and was able to forcefully start the vehicle. The contact returned to the dealer the following day, but they could not duplicate the failure with the cruise control or the stalling. On June 16, 2008, she took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced a fuse. Upon further inspection, they identified a bushing that needed to be replaced as well. All of these failures occurred within four months of purchasing the vehicle and with less then 4,000 miles placed on the vehicle by the contact. The failure mileage was 34,177 and current mileage was 37,600. Updated 07/15/08
when the consumer started the vehicle, the power seats and power locks failed to work. The consumer returned to the dealer and they replaced the driver side motor. The sway bar bushings were replaced. Updated 07/15/08.

The contact owns a 2000 Mercury Mountaineer. When the contact purchased the vehicle, the rear wiper was not working at all. The failure was noticed while driving 35 mph. The vehicle was taken to the dealer and the arm, motor, and wiring were replaced. Afterwards, the front wipers would not receive wiper fluid. The dealer corrected the failure and the wipers worked for approximately 3-4 weeks. Currently, the front wipers are the only ones that function. The contact spoke with the manufacturer and they stated that the failure was not a safety issue and were no longer involved with NHTSA campaign id number 00v072000 (electrical system:fuses and circuit breakers). The current and failure mileages were 126,000.

Electronic controls operated by the generic control module (wipers, rear defroster, power windows etc. ) have locked up. Throttle sticks after full stop and use of cruise control and needs excessive force to move forward. Existing recalls should cover these repairs, as well as two other recalls for the corrosive hood latch, and speed control where the throttle could ice up in prolonged cold weather. I went in armed with documentation and the recall information from the website but the sayville Ford dealership in sayville, NY, refused to service them, stating they were "campaigns" not actual recalls. If your vehicle doesn't come up for service on their computer, they do not acknowledge the legal recalls and won't do the repairs. Recall #'s: 00v072000, 99v062001, 99v164000, 97v074000.

As I parked the vehicle in the garage, I noticed smoke coming from under the hood. I exited the vehicle and observed flames in the upper part of the left front wheel well. I put out the fire but was unable to open the hood. The vehicle was towed to the dealership where it was determined the fire had started in the relay/fuse box located in the left rear of the engine compartment. I asked both the dealership and my insurance company (united services automobile association), if a recall or technical service bulletin and been issued by Ford concerning this type of incident. I have not received a reply from either.
