When travelling in "overdrive", upon acceleration, the transmission will buck, violently depending how hard you press on the pedal. The only time this will not happen is if you control the vehicle speed with the cruise control. I haven,t had it go to the dealer as of yet for inspection, so there are no conclusions as of yet as to what may be wrong.

40 Power Train problem of the 2010 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 12/07/2011

Pulled into parking space, placed shifter in park, turned off ignition, released brake and vehicle rolled backwards as if not in park. Attempted to restart vehicle and no response. Set parking brake. Could not get vehicle to lock into park, shifter moved regardless of brake on or not and would not start. Moved shifter through entire range of gears and returned to park, vehicle still would not start and park would not hold. Called dealer and was told to have it towed in. Returned to vehicle and tried once more and it started and proceeded to respond normally. Vehicle taken directly to dealer who could not find any problem or cause of preceding situation. On two subsequent dates (most recent 5/25/2012), vehicle was backed into a parking space, placed in park and ignition turned off. When an attempt to restart vehicle was made there was no response. Park appeared to hold normal, but unable to engage ignition. Dash lights, chimes and all electrical components appear to work normal but was still unable to engage starter. Again started process to have vehicle towed to dealer. After approximately 30 minutes to an hour of sitting (with no other action) vehicle started normally. Again dealer at a loss for cause and cannot effect repair since unable to recreate problem. Concern is for transmission/ignition interlock failure or other action that could result in damage or injury.

Drove to grocery store and attempted to place car in park and unable to get it into park. It will go in every other gear but will not go into park. Already had to replace gear shift after the gear shift arm broke off in my hand while trying to get it out of park a few months ago. Now looking at more money on this piece of junk car. Now must leave car in gear and leave keys in the car. This is just an accident waiting to happen with young children around.

45 Power Train problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/01/2011

Since I purchased in 2009, engine kills anytime, mostly when gas pedal not pressed. Pulling out of parking lots, sitting at red lights, or letting off gas on interstate, engine just kills. Sometimes feels like a jolt. I have to put the shift in neutral and restart the engine. Records of all visits for the problem at dealership. Never could solve problem, but too unsafe to donate to my grandson. If something were to happen to him because of a defect that was never found, I don't know what I'd do. Cannot check transmission fluid level. Sealed. I do have some fluid stains on my driveway. For years I've reported to the dealership and specified the concern for safety but to no avail. It kills anytime. May not die for a week, or tomorrow, or even a month. No particular pattern. Feels like a transmission problem. If I'm sitting in a parking lot with motor running, sometimes it just kills. It's the shifting to neutral while driving on highways and streets to restart while moving I'm worried about. I've had several mechanics claim they fixed it but to no avail. Please give me some direction. All the shops I've gone to are reputable businesses. One mechanic said the electronic brain (computer box) might be causing and said to send it to Mercury for recalculation. I don't know about that. Most of the read outs are epa related.

46 Power Train problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 10/21/2010

2002 Mercury Mountaineer - drove my daughter to school and parked the car. Came back a few minutes later to go home. Started the car and found that the SUV was stuck in park. Tried to push break and pull back gear shift to place car in drive and the gear shift broke in hand. Currently at shop. Told car will need entire new steering column. Also SUV has been having problems shifting. Major delay when placed into gear until it actually goes in gear. There is usually a pause and then car will jerk into place.

47 Power Train problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/16/2010

When at cruising speed trans feels like it is surging as if trying to downshift but never quite does, from a dead stop trans sometimes feels like it cannot pull vehicle's weight.

48 Power Train problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/02/2010

I had driven my 2002 Mountaineer to work, I gently pulled back on the gear shift, to put it into park, and it broke off in my hand. I had to leave it in drive and also had to leave my keys in the car. I didn't really worry about it being stolen because it won't go anywhere. I feel that Ford should have put a recall on this model of Mountaineer, do to so many problems. Transmissions, auto windows, gear shifts, wheel welds, and now a fire may start in the car even if it's not running. Really, I guess we will have to wait till one of them blows up, killing someone, before Ford will listen.

51 Power Train problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 12/13/2009

I was parked in the driveway at my babysitter's home. I attempted to put the car from park to reverse and the entire gear shift lever fell off in my hand. I had no warning of any problem prior to this happening and was very much shocked that I could break in two a metal object in a car that should last for many many years. At the time this problem occurred the vehicle had approximately 65,000 miles on it. This problem seems to be happening again, even after having the part replaced by gary crossley Ford in liberty, mo. I am much more aware now of the problems that can happen and am noticing wear on the rubber casing around the gear shift lever. I do not want this problem to happen again to any one. It was very distressing to have the gear shift lever fall off!.

55 Power Train problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/25/2009

Vehicle's transmission "clunks" or hard shifts, when slowing down and coming to a stop, or at low speeds. Surges at stop lights, or will hesitate when the gas pedal is pushed. This has been an ongoing problem since I purchased the vehicle in 1997. I have taken it back to the dealer numerous times, and they tell me that 1. Nothing is wrong with the transmission or 2. They have downloaded a new program for the computer. I know there is something wrong, but no one will fix this. Now it's 4000 miles over warranty, and the problem is getting worse. Sooner or later this will cause an accident.

56 Power Train problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/20/2009

In July 2009 at 40000 miles the radiator had a hairline fracture and the radiator had to be replaced, paid out of pocket by owner. In March 2010, at 60000 miles, another radiator is being put in this vehicle, again out of pocket expense for owner. There should not be a need for a vehicle to have had 3 radiators at 60000 miles. The dealership states this is a known issue with this model and that these are poorly placed and manufactured radiators. Ford/Mercury should recall these vehicles and reimburse out of pocket expenses for anyone that has proof of radiators being replaced.

57 Power Train problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/26/2009

2003 Mercury Mountaineer 4. 6l-when the vehicle is not under acceleration [stop sign/signal, exiting an expressway to a surface street, coasting] the engine will not hold idle, then stall. The steering & brakes are compromised when the engine stalls. To restart the engine, the headlights go dark for a moment. . . This is a very serious matter. Decelerating from an expressway to a surface street, on a curved exit ramp , at night makes for an out of control situation where the driver can not see because of engine failure! I've replaced the throttle position censor [tps] with no improvement. The dealer offers replacement of parts $1500, and no guarantee of solving the problem. The vehicle is useless to me fore it is a hazard to be on the road. . . For me and anyone else driving near me.

58 Power Train problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/26/2009

The issue with my car the transmission I was driving it one the interstate when I started to her a roar coming from my engine and that when I noticed my rpm was off the chart and I started to go slower by the minute and as I called up my mechanic he said it was my transmission and being from another state and only having 100 bucks in the pocket is not good so now im stuck in a town with no job now needing to get my transmission fixed and not having a car to drive I cant get a job not having a job makes me lose my car and having no home left for me that's just not right Ford should b the ones in my shoes.

59 Power Train problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 04/02/2009

I was in the park position. I turned my engine on and placed my foot on the brake and take my car out of park, when then gear shaft/stick broke in half. I contacted the dealer and I had them come get the car, they contacted me, and stated "that they have never seen something like this before", that came from the service manager bill amadei, and another person bill in the service department. I have taken a picture of what it looks like. If I was not already in the park position and I went to place my car from the drive to park and this happened, my car could have went right into my house. When I stated this to the dealer, his comment was "yes, I guess that could have happened. ".

60 Power Train problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 04/01/2009

Mercury Mountaineer 05 with less then 60,000 miles, I was told that there was wearing in the valve case from automatic transmission which causes transmission to skip and shift hard and pop forward, I need to have it repaired , transmission place states this is a known problem which has a technical advisory about it. . . . What's my recourse.

61 Power Train problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 03/04/2009

Two complaints. 1) transmission downshifts hard when slowing, such as for a stop sign. Mercury says it is a software problem. They are aware of the problem but won't fix it under the extended warranty. My vehicle has 37,700 miles. 2) extreme wire wear. It came with michlin tires and I have gotten far less than 20,000 miles out of them. I am now replacing with bridgestone. I don't know if it is the tire or something defective with the vehicle. The dealership lied to me when I took it in for them to check. The michlins are wearing in the center of the tread and the dealership told me that it was because I had 45 pounds in the tires. I am very concerned about all aspects of upkeep of my vehicle. It calls for 32 psi front and rear. The tires are always within a couple of pounds of that figure. Granted the wear does look like overinflation. Something is wrong with the tire or the vehicle. I have made sure the alignment is right on and it does alighn properly so I tend to believe it is the michlin cross terrian 235x65x18 tires. Other than the trans which the dealership advises will be fixed with a software upgrade and the tire problem, everything else is very satisfactory with the vehicle.

62 Power Train problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 03/02/2009

My transmission jerks as I accelerate during travel. To me it's getting worse. I have had it looked at. No codes are showing that I have a problem. But clearly something is wrong. I have done this several times, still no codes to indicate anything is wrong with my vehicle. Also my gas sensors are shot. Engine light goes in and out. My vehicle has stopped in the middle of atlanta traffic, causing problems of other vehicles traveling in the direction that I am with children. I also have the problem with backing my vehicle, it jerks before backing.

63 Power Train problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 02/13/2009

Rear wheel bearings failing for a second time. First time was on 3/15/08.

64 Power Train problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/15/2008

Being having problems with rear lift gate [ not staying close, opens anytime, it wants to by itself. My transmission problems erratic shifting, hard shifting up and down shifting and in and out shifting on reverse from park to reverse pulls very hard. When I bought the car I told them they looked at like I didn't know what I was saying they made an appointment for mechanic to check it and said it was good but it wasn't. I have 84,000 miles on it never pull a trailer with it I've made 38 payments on it. Why does Ford puts a product like that and asks alot of money for the car that can't even make to 100,000 miles they should be out of act. Hope Ford will take care of this cars.

65 Power Train problem of the 2003 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/28/2008

Powertrain.

66 Power Train problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 03/03/2008

My 2006 Mercury Mountaineer has intermittently jolted or lurched forward when stopping for lights and stop signs after speeds over 30 mph. Hasn't gotten away from me but feels as if I am going to hit something or someone ahead of me. Extremely scary when people are in cross walk. I took my car to the Ford dealer shortly after buying it used. The dealer checked it out and denied it was happening. That was years ago and tonight I saw numerous complaints on another website about this problem. Was looking because now I am getting a grinding noise from my wheels which persists after a brake job that didn't fix it as I thought. Both problems are separate but I see a pattern of them on this vehicle now.

68 Power Train problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 04/16/2007

I turn my 2007 Mountaineer awd on and it accelerates, so I let it stop idleing high and if it doesnt totally shut off I then proceed to put my truck either in drive or reverse and it jerks very hard. I have already hit my garage because I was not able to stop the vehicle. I already took it to Ford and they told me that the engine light is not on so they can't do anything about it. They little wrench symbol is on though. I am so scared that I am going to end up killing someone. I wish I could afford to not drive my truck around but it is my only transportation. I have to drive my 4 kids with me and it concerns me. Some one please help, from what I see is another Toyota disaster waiting to happen.
