1 Steering problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/02/2023

Aftermarket rack and pinion system re-manufactured by detroit axel began leaking fluid and caused a loss of power steering within 3 months of purchase. A second unit was installed and after about a year had the exact same failure as the first unit. Also resulting in the loss of power steering. It is my contention that detroit axel is not capable of re-manufacturing to a satisfactory safety standard. I believe they should be investigated and perhaps subject to a product recall. I pray nobody has yet been killed by their ineptitude!.

7 Steering problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/22/2015

Exact same as NHTSA id # 10654146. The "easy exit" feature activated at 65 mph in freeway traffic. I am 6' tall and was able to slide seat forward, but my wife is 5' tall and may have had issues reaching the pedals. . . This has since happened on 3 other occasions ( 2 at freeway speed, and once pulling into our driveway). I will contact dealer, but wanted search recalls first.

8 Steering problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 10/01/2014

I was driving my vehicle and the driver's seat moved back, and the dome light came on. This really scared me! thank god I wasn't on the highway traveling at a higher rate of speed with other vehicles when this occurred. The first time this happend was approximately 3 months ago (the seat moves back, I move the seat up & it goes back again, I move it up again. . . Until it finally stops). This continues to happen periodically every since.

9 Steering problem of the 2008 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/06/2014

Once the key is inserted the seat will move into position and the interior lights turn off. That is what should happen. What happens is my knee nudges the key the car will think I have taken the key out and will turn the interior lights on and move my seat all the way back to its out position. This can cause an accident because me feet no longer touch the pedals. As soon as this happened my air bag light came on but no codes are showing. This has happened multiple times and I am surprised there is not a recall for this since there are others suffering with this as well that I have seen posted in online forums.

10 Steering problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 07/13/2014

Vehicle was parked. After starting the vehicle, with foot on brake pedal and parking brake released, I attempted to shift from park into drive and the gearshift broke off in my hand. Vehicle had to be towed to dealership and I am awaiting the estimate for repair costs. This is my second Ford SUV to do this after 80k miles. The repair have been going for around $1300 or more.

12 Steering problem of the 2006 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 11/26/2013

Vehicle exhibited resistance in steering. Ford dealer found lower steering shaft u-joint frozen from corrosion. Ford dealer stated this condition was similar to that seen for vehicles recalled under Ford recall 13508 and even though it is not currently included, felt this vehicle should be included in the recall. Dealer had to replace the lower steering shaft assembly to return the vehicle to a safe operating condition.

13 Steering problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 12/07/2012

I had picked up my kids from daycare and I put my vehicle in reverse and backed up. While backing up I heard a loud pop and I got out to see but there was nothing visible. So I put the vehicle in drive and as I was going down the street my vehicle axle broke and my truck hit the street in the middle of traffic. I took it to the Ford dealership and they said it was my axle and my differential had broken also, am I am lucky that I didn't have a bad accident with the extend of the damage of the differential. After I fixed that and it cost $2900. That still did not fix the problem and I had to replace the transfer case. Then all three of my Cadillac converters had to be replaced. I have had problem after problem and OH yeah the back rear gate has been cracked like the month after I bought it.

14 Steering problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/20/2012

I went to go pick up my son from school, when I went to put it on drive the shifting handle broke off. I didnt even do it hard. I had to get my car towed to my house and had to pay to get it fixed. I looked it up and theres alot more people that have complaints about this and that it should go to recall its just not safe, what if were driving and changing gears on the road and someone gets hurt even death.

15 Steering problem of the 2007 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 05/01/2012

I was driving on the highway and noticed that my steering was not working well. My engine was overheating and eventually shut off. I had to pull over on the side of the highway. When I got someone to look at the car, we realized it had no coolant. We filled up the coolant and everything seemed fine. About a month later I noticed that the engine was making the same noise as it had before as if it were working too hard. I checked the coolant and it was completely empty again. I have a friend who also owns the mm and had the same problem. The repair and cost of a new radiator was 1500. Ford/merucy needs to do a recall on this product and get it taken care of. I just purchased this car in January and should not have to be spending so much money on a repair.

16 Steering problem of the 1998 Mercury Mountaineer

17 Steering problem of the 2010 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 12/07/2011

Pulled into parking space, placed shifter in park, turned off ignition, released brake and vehicle rolled backwards as if not in park. Attempted to restart vehicle and no response. Set parking brake. Could not get vehicle to lock into park, shifter moved regardless of brake on or not and would not start. Moved shifter through entire range of gears and returned to park, vehicle still would not start and park would not hold. Called dealer and was told to have it towed in. Returned to vehicle and tried once more and it started and proceeded to respond normally. Vehicle taken directly to dealer who could not find any problem or cause of preceding situation. On two subsequent dates (most recent 5/25/2012), vehicle was backed into a parking space, placed in park and ignition turned off. When an attempt to restart vehicle was made there was no response. Park appeared to hold normal, but unable to engage ignition. Dash lights, chimes and all electrical components appear to work normal but was still unable to engage starter. Again started process to have vehicle towed to dealer. After approximately 30 minutes to an hour of sitting (with no other action) vehicle started normally. Again dealer at a loss for cause and cannot effect repair since unable to recreate problem. Concern is for transmission/ignition interlock failure or other action that could result in damage or injury.

18 Steering problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 09/06/2011

I just finished getting gas. I turned on the ignition and put the car in reverse and the gear shift snapped off in my hand. It is just dangling. I had to put the emergency brake on and turn the car off immediately so that it would roll back and crash into someone else car or just a pedestrian. I paid to have the car towed to my home for $59. Upon going home, I called several Ford dealerships who clearly were familiar with the problem because I was given a quote for the part and labor immediately after I told them about the issue. I took it one step further and went online to check for recalls. There weren't any recalls however, I have read several forums online and this seems to be an ongoing issue with the 2002 Mercury Mountaineers and 2002 Ford explorers. This is ridiculous and I am outraged and I feel Ford needs to take ownership regarding this issue.

19 Steering problem of the 2004 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 02/09/2011

Transfer case defect causes steering difficulty on slow turns. Transmission issue reported to Ford in 2005 at 38,000 miles. Again at 51,000. I opted for an aamco transmission when Ford refused to cover. Now transfer case is making driving dangerous. Turning ability greatly reduced,.

20 Steering problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 06/02/2010

I had driven my 2002 Mountaineer to work, I gently pulled back on the gear shift, to put it into park, and it broke off in my hand. I had to leave it in drive and also had to leave my keys in the car. I didn't really worry about it being stolen because it won't go anywhere. I feel that Ford should have put a recall on this model of Mountaineer, do to so many problems. Transmissions, auto windows, gear shifts, wheel welds, and now a fire may start in the car even if it's not running. Really, I guess we will have to wait till one of them blows up, killing someone, before Ford will listen.

27 Steering problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/01/2005

Had warped rotors within first 2,000 miles. Ford would only ground rotors but dealer replaced them at no charge. I have also experienced a loud, thumping noise when I am making a sharp turn to left or right at a very low speed. Also, often when putting car in reverse many times there is a large thump and vehicle appears to shift hard. Finally, when stopped on a steep hill, after removing foot from brake, vehicle rolls backwards many times.
