1 Sway Bar problem of the 2002 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 09/22/2010

The contact owns a 2002 Mercury Mountaineer. The contact was driving approximately 55 mph when vehicle began to drive as if were "floating". The vehicle was pulled over and upon examination; the contact could not find a failure within the vehicle. He re-entered the vehicle and as he began to accelerate, the vehicle began to shake abnormally. The vehicle was taken to an independent repair facility where the contact was informed that the rear passenger sway bar was fractured. The vehicle was then taken to another independent repair facility where the sway bar was repaired. The failure did not recur. The failure and current mileage was 101,000. 2 Sway Bar problem of the 1997 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 10/21/2009

The contact owns a 1997 Mercury Mountaineer. He experienced difficult steering, because the front sway bar linkage had fractured. Secondly he would intermittently smell an odor of gasoline inside of the vehicle. Thirdly during brake application the accelerator pedal would also stick. This condition would cause the vehicle to lurch forward. Lastly the main bar that held the two bumpers together had corroded. The failures were described in recalls (98v060000, 00v422000, 00v402000). However he was advised by representatives from the dealer and the manufacturer that the previous owner had the vehicle repaired according the recalls. The current mileage was approximately 157,000. The failure mileage was approximately 156,000.

3 Sway Bar problem of the 2005 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 02/11/2008

The contact owns a 2005 Mercury Mountaineer. On the day the vehicle was purchased, the contact noticed fluid leaking onto her garage floor. She returned to the dealer and was informed that the pinion seal needed to be replaced, and repairs were made. While traveling 45 mph, the contact attempted to set the cruise control and the vehicle shut off in the middle of the road. She was able to pull over to the shoulder and restart the vehicle to drive home. After work one evening, she was unable to start the vehicle. After 20 minutes, her father arrived and was able to forcefully start the vehicle. The contact returned to the dealer the following day, but they could not duplicate the failure with the cruise control or the stalling. On June 16, 2008, she took the vehicle to the dealer and they replaced a fuse. Upon further inspection, they identified a bushing that needed to be replaced as well. All of these failures occurred within four months of purchasing the vehicle and with less then 4,000 miles placed on the vehicle by the contact. The failure mileage was 34,177 and current mileage was 37,600. Updated 07/15/08 when the consumer started the vehicle, the power seats and power locks failed to work. The consumer returned to the dealer and they replaced the driver side motor. The sway bar bushings were replaced. Updated 07/15/08.

4 Sway Bar problem of the 1997 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 08/10/2005

Dealer states that my vehicle (vin4m2du55p2vuj42868) is not included in the recall for 1997 Mercury Mountaineer sway bar links 00s47- recall id#00v402000. I don't understand why my vehicle should be excluded even though it is a 1997 Mountaineer. I would like some compensation from Ford motor company.

5 Sway Bar problem of the 1999 Mercury Mountaineer

Failure Date: 01/01/1901

1999 Mercury Mountaineer sway bar failure. Consumer states that front passenger sway bar link was sheared off. Then he noticed the driver side sway bar link was the same way. Consumer replaced both of the links. The consumer stated a recall had been issued for earlier models.
