My 2007 Mercury Mountaineer never had any problems until recently, thought it was the transmission because of the way it drove. Took it to the mechanic and got transmission fluid put in but the problems remained the same and was told the transmission was fine. My thermostat housing unit was leaking (this is very common with these cars and very dangerous, needs immediate attention!) and had caused very expensive wiring issues. Almost acts exactly like the transmission is going out - rpm's are way too high, the vehicle would not accelerate in the middle of city traffic, the car jumped at a stoplight and caused me to hit the car in front of me, and it doesn't shift properly. Problems occurred out of nowhere and are too dangerous to be ignored but very expensive to be fixed. Its very common and should be recalled before someone gets seriously injured!!!!.

Apparently there have been a lot of issues with the thermostat housing leaking fluid into the electrical system causing it to short out. I was driving, went to take off in rush hour traffic and they vehicle wouldn't go because the leak and ruined a part of the electrical system and the gears would shift. It was almost like the transmission had gone out. I have read several accounts where this has happened to tons of <09 Mountaineers and explorers. TSB 09-22-15 came out about this issue. I was driving with my infant daughter and we could have been injured very badly. Something needs to be done about this. It has been identified and apparenlty affects people's cars and their ability to accelerate. Very dangerous.

transmission failure. Vehicle had under 60,000 miles, but had surpassed extended warranty time frame. Reverse vehicle would not move. Shifted very hard through gears. Sometimes tacking at 3000 rpm. Took to a transmission specialist. Repaired at a cost of 2600. 00. Have since returned vehicle to same place for same issues plus transmission overheat light and leaking transmission fluid. Seat belts locked down for no reason. Would not retract. Called dealer, could not do anything because I was over restraint warranty by 3000 miles. Have replaced all 4 seat belt restraints. Front air bag light stays on or blinks, or is off. Called dealer, stated repair would not be covered due to mileage. I purchased this vehicle brand new June 2002. Today it has 65,00 miles on it. Is driven primarily on the highway for vacations. Have had several small repairs that were covered under extended warranty. I am very disappointed in the performance of this vehicles drive train and safety restraint system to include seat belts and air bag issues. With as many complaints I see on line about the transmission and front air bag issues, seems to me something should be done to help those of us that purchased in good faith what should have been a great vehicle. I have been a Ford/ Mercury owner since 1971. This is the first vehicle I have had that had major issues.

While driving, the vehicle began to drive rough and make noises. The driver pulled the vehicle over to the side of the road and noticed fluid leaking under the vehicle. The vehicle was towed to a dealer which determined that the transmission casing had a large hole. The transmission must be replaced. Please provide further details.
