Transmission Stuck In Gear Problems of Mercury Mountaineer

The shift lever snapped off, in reverse, while attempting to put into park. The lever broke in such a way that the vehicle was stuck in gear with no means to put in park. The base of the lever that operates the gear change mechanism appears to be made of porous metal. I was forced to leave my vehicle in reverse, with the keys stuck in the ignition, until I was able to arrange a tow. Thankfully I was not in traffic, on a hill when this happened. I was able to place some items behind the wheels to prevent rolling (emergency brake does not work well). This appears to be a common problem as there are numerous documented complaints (enough that a parts manufacturer has come up with a more durable replacement part).

We bought the car 2 years ago and a few months after we have purchased it, it started to act up. When we pull the shift gear to reversed, it jerks real bad as if we were rear ended. A few times, the shift gear would be stuck. We could not pull the shifter down to reverse from park. It normally takes us an hour so to do it but tonight, it was worst. We were stuck on park. . . Finally after an hour, we were able to pull it from park and onto reverse from the garage. Only this time reverse was park, neutral was reverse, drive was neutral and 3 was drive. It was so frustrating. . . . And to top that off, my husband and I both got into a heated argument over this stupid car!! we still cannot get it fixed because we don't have the money!!!.

The gear shift gets stuck in park and I have to pull down on it really hard to get it in drive or reverse I'm afraid that its going to break one day.
